Southgate was tactically naïve and didn't use his squad well enough. His loyalty to Kane meant we were effectively playing with 10 men all through the competition. Bellingham was running on fumes and was one of the reasons we conceded late on. Regardless, Spain were good value for their win and by far the most entertaining team in the competition.
Exactly what I’ve been saying. Walker was another one who looked a shadow of himself all Euros. With other options at RB it made no sense that he played almost every minute
No they ain't.Most English fans say we won't win anything with Southgate. We have the players to be as good as anyone, but not the coach.Engkands best player is Palmer .The manager used him as a 5 minute sub in every game
Her comments about Spain dominating possession even without Rodri sums up English punditry entirely. The reason Rodri dominates in the Prem so thoroughly is because he plays the position in the Spanish style, the way he learned from Spanish coaches in Spanish sides and now in Pep's Spanish system. The fact that the English pundits aren't familiar with Rodri's teammates and his replacement only reflects poorly on the pundits. Whoever else Spain fields will play in the same manner, keeping possession, pressing to regain it when lost, and not giving the English lads the chance to take over possession. And this is why they are a great team, even if the English pundits kept telling us about "man for man England has a better side." The game isn't played man for man, but team v team.
Why do people still listen to Gary Neville then? He's always wrong and arrogant. Why do Brits keep listening to the same people? Is it the lack of knowing other languages to listen to other pundits?
This Spanish team is one of the best European champions I remember. Really positive and exciting football while displaying all the tactical awareness and technical finesse from previous years.👏🏻
Absolutely, I've been saying that all through the competition. Southgate needs to be honest and accountable for poor team selection and late substitution policy that only worked occasionally due to luck more than strategy. His and England's luck ran out last night, but Spain were by far the better team and England's performance in the last two games was definitely improving. However, too many weak links in the team: Kane, Foden, Walker and others blew hot and cold - no consistency in performance. Compare that to Spain's approach to tactics, playing style and use of subs.
@@khalidhawadle5412 Well, he worked his little cotton socks off and had a few shots that narrowly missed the target in the earlier rounds. But I agree, he often looked out of his depth. It's a mistake to take someone from a top PL club that hasn't proved himself on the international stage. Foden seemed to be lost because he wasn't getting the service or the space he's used to playing for Man City in the PL.
Due to the dominance of Anglo-American media, the news coverage never mentioned how good Spain was during this whole tournament. From the beginning of the match Spain looked very good and that was a surprise for me.
He’s such a fool Neville, but Sky allow him to say whatever he wants with no-one allowed to challenge him so he’s at the point where he believes everything he says is fact. He spent the whole build-up to the final talking up Harry Kane as England’s best ever player, the captain who is undroppable, despite his wretched performances in the tournament so far. Half-time in the final and he is demanding Kane be substituted because, shock horror, he’s been dreadful again. The bloke’s a complete charlatan who will never criticise the manager or the tactics, like he wouldn’t Ole at Man Utd.
@RA-wp6th he didn't have the bottle to drop kane in case we lost, and he was attacked for his decision, but we lost with him, I think his England career is over, if I was next manager forget Kane and bring in the next Gen.
@@dalesmith1275 If Gareth dropped Kane we’d have more chance of winning. And he should have been dropped a long time ago. Even the last few years Ive never liked Kane’s performance in the England team. He has always been that slow runner, that needs a lot of support and doesn’t contribute anything else to the game. He’s great at penalties, but we need to try to win in real time.
England fans are delusional. How they thought a manager they don't rate would get a team that has not played up to it's talent to out play a team that has been the best in the tournament. Getting to the final was a miracle in its self.
Finally, someone who has a damn clue about how well Southgate actually has done in getting us to the final! I never thought we would even get out of our group to be honest, thats how bad I thought we'd be! Imagine how pleased I am that we got to the final and lost to the best team in the tournamant, by only 1 goal!
Truth is England were dreadful to watch in the tournament. Slow and too defensive. Truth is Southgate made the same poor setup in every game and expected a different result. Truth is we scraped our way through a 2nd rate group and got found out by the first good team we met. Truth is I'd rather watch us getting beaten 5:4 than watch this Southgate football.
1st half against Netherlands is the minimum I would expect and had we played 90 mins like that I'd take a win or a loss. I dont think I have ever seen a team play so badly for 7 straight games and coming from an Everton fan, thats hard to believe :)
Spain played the same line up from start to end. They only changed the line up due to injuries or suspensions. Line up is never an issue. It’s the system that makes any line up work.

When he was with the national team he didn’t help them play any better either they had Kane take corners at that point in time and he’s the o e they should listen to?😂
You know what was the worst thing to watch? How they kicked the ball back almost every time they tried to create something. They teach little kids in academies to take risks, create chances and then you see Walker throwing in from the proximity of the corner flag almost to the halfway line and kicked to Pickford. There was hardly any shot from distance in all games. Like Wayne Gretzky said “You miss 100% shots you don’t take.”
I think that’s a credit to Spain more than England, Spain kept it real tight and it was a chess match, the match was lost in midfield by better players constantly pushing England back and England didn’t have the moments of class to breakthrough, we needed moments of brilliance and a slither of luck and this didn’t happen. We also need to understand the England as a team are not number 1,2 or 3….. Italy, Germany, Spain, France are all better than us and always have been but as a nation we expect results every tournament and it’s an unfair expectation
@@benniji There is no shame in losing to Spain in a final. There is shame comes from almost never playing well during the entire tournament, and Southgate seeming okay with that. England having difficulty against Spain was not a new thing, but the same thing we saw in every English match, regardless of the quality of the opposition. Southgate seemed to want to progress the ball out of the back through the middle, but when the opposition quickly figure out how to clog that channel, there was no coherent Plan B. On the left, Foden was too easily isolated due to lack of supporting overlapping and underlapping runs. Saka was getting little support, too, but due to individual brilliance he managed to beat his marker and zing in 15+ dangerous crosses during the tournament, yet only two connected with an English player -- one was a goal and the other Kane skyed into the stands. So at the close of final England went with Plan D: Pickford giving the ball away with longballs. Again, it is not the result I am criticizing -- obviously this was a very good Spanish side more than worthy of winning the trophy. The frustration is that England did not give it their best shot -- not even close.
Lack of shots from distance is because this English team is too "comfortable" getting outplayed in the middle of the pitch and there was little time/space to make those attempts. That is not a terrible thing, necessarily, because the opposition gets to play their game, too. But it is a headscratcher when England seemed so comfortable getting outplayed in wide areas, too, and there was so little good service in terms of good long crosses from wide spaces. What to do but let Pckford give Spain a throw in or goal kick, right?
@@pinkandypink I agree with you 100% ... and so do the people I've spoken to today. At the time you talk about the pressure was building on the Spain defence, and they were looking edgy. We could feel something was happening. Walker dithered with the throw, and even though Palmer and Saka were asking for the ball, he tossed it to Rice, I think, who passed it back to Pickford, and he, from memory, hoofed it out of play over the Spanish goal line. All the pressure off, Spain had the ball, and away they came, back to our end, mightily relieved.

I swear we played some of our best football of the Southgate era when we played 4-3-3 a few years back (think of the nations league game against Spain where we were winning 3-0 at half time) and now we have some really good options out wide - Saka, Gordon, Palmer, Bowen, Sancho… but we don’t play with wingers anymore and therefore don’t stretch the opposition. So frustrating.
Yup. Part of the problem is this English team was able to slouch forward with underperforming play, until they ran smack into a genuinely good team and could not cope. Reminds me of Argentina in WC2014 and WC2018. Weirdly enough, IMNSHO Argentina benefited greatly from losing their first WC2022 against Saudi Arabia because it imposed a useful bit of urgency in them -- forcing them to get used to coming out of their shell and scoring goals in the group stage, so they had some experience playing positive football before the KOs.

This England team were probably the worst team to ever reach a final
The "real" final was Spain's game versus Germany. We all know England fell into the easy half of the draw. Check the stats of the Germany Spain game. Spain had ONE Corner and inferior possession
Kane can't provide and outlet for a long ball, can't fight with Center backs, cannot run the channel or flanks and drops deep. Southgate is to average to be innovative and go against the status quo with his team selections
The Italy loss felt way worse. Spain definitely deserved to win the tournament. We played poorly all tournament and were honestly lucky to reach the final. Spain were confident, never panicked, and got the job done.
@@michaelmulhall5007 See, you're talking like Neville now. The second half of the season Cucurella was brilliant, part of the reason we went on a run to end up in Europe. Remove your emotional bias and maybe you'll have an intelligent opinion
He is entitled to his opinion…. In hindsight. Everyone can call Gary out for his comments but before the tournament no one thought Marc would play and he has been poor for a while. When they have Alex G no one. Everyone thought he would start
After watching many videos today, with many guest panelists giving their opinions, I take away that there are two ways to lose a match. One is to lose well and the other is to lose badly. England with all its talent lost very badly. This is what hurts a lot. Southgate’s decisions were appalling.
They weren't that appalling were they, he's the only manager in decades to get us to, not just one, but two finals, so he must be doing something right. Spain were the better team, they have been throughout the tournament and there is no shame in coming second.
@@amandaslade9072 There is no shame in coming in second to this Spanish side, no. But England has been often appalling this tournament, barely squeaking by against teams they should be pushing around. They are worse than the Euro2021 and WC2022 English teams by a wide margin, IMO. Southgate has lucked his way into easy groups and easy KO routes in three successful tournaments. In terms of tough matches, the only difficult teams he prevailed against in FOUR big tournaments has been a pretty good Colombia team (2018), an astoundingly shambolic German team (2021) and a pretty good Netherlands team (2024). That is it. When England meets a good team (Croatia 2018, Italy 2021, France 2022, Spain 2024) they fold. Again, there is no shame in losing to these four teams, but Southgate is conspicuously lacking in having even a single decisive win against an obviously good team.
Some of the decisions on that park were terrible last night. One passage of play summed it up for me...Bellingham won the ball in a defensive position on the left, did some fancy show-boating, passed it way back to Rice, who hoofed it straight back to a Spanish player to start another dangerous move. It wasn't Gareth Southgate doing the showboating and hoofing. These players must surely take responsibility for their own actions.
Playing it back to Pickford from the kick off for him to lump it forward. That’s Sunday league football! That tells you all you need to know about Southgate and his tactics.

England's performances during this tournament reminded me of that great chant from Scottish fans a few years ago..."We're shite, but at least we know we're shite".
Let's not forget we were 1 minute away from going out to Slovakia in the second round. Every good substitution Southgate has made this tournament was after millions of England fans has been screaming for them to be made about 15 minutes beforehand. Starting Kane in the final was a major mistake. If he's struggling with his mobility, you simply don't play him against the best team. Spain had an extra day of rest ahead of the final and yet Southgate didn't introduce enough fresh legs early enough in the second half.
Hoy en España no saldrá el sol. Hoy tras los triunfos de Carlos Alcaraz y la Selección Española de fútbol con las sonrisas de todo el país hay luz de sobra. El sol de vacaciones.
This is how I don’t get how Gary Neville is always on punditry .. he says Southgate was on the same trajectory as the Spanish manager .. the Spanish manager won U19 , U21 European cups won the nations league and won the European cup ….. Southgate got Middlesbrough relegated and managed u21 for a period of time?
The truth is, that was some of the worst England performances back-to-back for several games in a row. They pulled out some magic to get to the Final but in reality, you can't rely on that to win every single game. Obviously, hindsight is 20:20 but Rice & maybe Foden should've probably gone off when Mainoo did - they both felt a bit lost without Mainoo's constantly man-marking and positioning. Rice's possession stats are horrific in that match and having 35% possession as a team vs any Spanish side is a death penalty. England are also too reliant on Pickford just banging the ball down the pitch - that's not getting you far when Spain's midfield are some of the most active pressers I've seen, as soon as a dangerous player has the ball, they swarm them without giving up position on the pitch so they can easily win the ball AND break. It was very impressive. England REALLY needed fresh legs to counter it. But the better team won, the best team of the tournament won and the team with the most stand-out players won - so it's nothing to be ashamed about. Magic met reality.
No surprises. England took part in all the worst games of the tournament. So much for these big names. And Kane? Tired of hearing what a world class player....blah blah. If his team is the better one and or on top and the oppo defence is suspect he can score. Otherwise he is pretty ordinary.
Nobody should be surprised we got beaten with Southgate in charge. The only surprise really is that we got to the final (because we were on right side of draw). Gareth does indeed have a track record of getting England far into tournaments, but he has a track record of losing against the first good team he comes up against. This won’t change when the FA gives him a 4 year contract later this week.
I agree. All who came before him like: Capello, Ericson, Hodgson won trophy after trophy with England. Then, Southgate came along and messed it all up by taking England to two finals and losing them both. I think he is the worst manager England has ever had. Failed to match the success of his predecessors.
I remember Brian Clough being none too complimentary about the Polish goalkeeper Jan Tomaszewski when Poland qualified for the world cup at England's expense at Wembley in 1973...referring to him as a clown...and not backing down...not one of Brian's finest hours! Jan and Poland went on to have a fantastic world cup. I reckon this was all the motivation that Jan needed...maybe the same applied to Marc.
One of the reasons why this brudda was never cut out to be a coach/manager were the comments he made about cucurella before the tournament. How can u make a player analysis like that knowing good and well he was in good form going into the tournament
Kane is SLOW cant run in behind can’t hold up the ball and has now played 4 finals 0 goals that ain’t my captain mate SHOCKING 👎 Guehi Englands best player
Do you watch Bayern Munich!? Kane needs direct wingers to thrive. I'm not saying we should have taken Rashford but what was the point in Gordon and Bowen!? Why did he never use them!?
England's lack of cohesion is entirely a product of failed management. there's no excuse for lying about Kane's health, and that's just one of many leadership failures. underplaying palmer and gordon, leaving out grealish, playing Bellingham too far forward, playing foden out of position, not utilizing subs effectively, favoring saka and bellingham, and the bias of favoring a politically correct squad over an effective one. the list goes on. this is what happens when you appoint a politician instead of a leader as manager.
Re-occurring nightmare ? Wasn't this the FIRST EVER time England made a major International final outside home soil? Whole country needs a reality check about how good they actually are.
They’ve made 2 finals back to back. Quarter final and semi final at the last 2 world cups only losing by one goal in both defeats. Really foolish and sounds a bit bitter to suggest they need a reality check with those performances. Assuming you’re from one of the insignificant little Britain countries.
Gary and his fellow pundits need to take a hit on this as well because Southgate clearly listens to them. Everyone kept saying Foden and Saka had to play together and it didn't work, Foden was horrendous and needed to be dropped. Gary kept saying if you play Trent right back it would cost England a knockout game. yet Kyle Walker was a defensive liability, at fault for 4 goals including 2 in the final and didn't offer 10% of what Trent would've going forward. We have such a deep squad and Southgate failed to utilise it, preferring to sick with players that had 6 bad games in a row. Foden, Kane and Walker all needed to be dropped.
@@thewomble1509 exactly. I think we all knew we were never going to win. Same conversation every 2 years. You could literally write everything down about England, put it away in a box for 2 years and then bring it back out and read it.
Southgate 100% on him for picking his mates over form. FA won't change it by hiring Potter. They do not play the win. Up to the big players to show some courage and refuse to play if the standard is not to the level of their clubs
Why they don't ever think about maybe those English player are massively overrated? Compared to talents across the globe, these English players are actually very mediocre.
He had Bellingham and phoden on the pitch still and Saka didn’t beat one defender the whole tournament and he only subbed mainooo not one person on the pitch was getting behind the Spain defense
England were not good, they had a ridiculously easy path to the final and barely made it. Spain didn’t have a particularly good game by their high standards, and were still head and shoulders better than England, who in my opinion, played their best game in the final.
This tournament told me more about the impact of the Spanish and foreign managers on the EPL and growth of those special players that England may have. So asking Southgate to manage them properly to glory, is a bit impossible! Even if Spain brought in their 2nd 11, I think that England would still have struggled. Imagine Rodri off and they still had control.
I am spanish we were there from 64 to 08 so i fully understand your feelings but for sure at some point this will come to an end and believe me the feeling when you win after so much time (and again u will win soon u have been very close lately) is so much better

Until England get rid of the mindset of safe no risk game play they will continue to fail. We can all accept losing but it’s the manner in which you go about it.
Not really bro, you just lose to the first quality side you meet. Southgate has been lucky in avoiding such sides until late in the comps. Not giving cole palmer more game time and playing kane and foden is part of englands problem
Exactly.
Everyone was giving Foden a handy after he ran with the ball a few times against Netherlands
Foden seems like a lost puppy he shouldn’t play !
@@khalidhawadle5412 Well, he worked his little cotton socks off and had a few shots that narrowly missed the target in the earlier rounds. But I agree, he often looked out of his depth.

I'd like to see Spain's under 16s against our first team then we'll find out how good England really are.

It's embarrassing watching Kane. Total donkey on the field. Never, ever rated him. Shite at taking penalties if you remember 2021

Loyalty finally beat England at the end
Loyalty never got England anywhere in the tournament infact it was a hindrance
Southgate reacts to goals in every single match. The elite managers anticipate goals.

I’ve said it from the beginning it’s Southgate not the players. We have world of talent just need a right manager to guide us thru right players right games. Palmer Gordon should’ve started toney Watkins should’ve come on way earlier though Toney wasn’t put on
England struggled every tournament Southgate has had, despite getting great draws for those tournaments.
They were bang average in this euros and were awful to watch.
But he'll be offered another contract because the fa are fine with mediocrity.
Gordon would have been a good sub to hand brought on. Spain were a great team, so good.
He had Bellingham and phoden on the pitch still and Saka didn’t beat one defender the whole tournament and he only subbed mainooo not one person on the pitch was getting behind the Spain defense
Playing jude on the left to accomodate MIA Phil “Plays best at 10” Foden was pretty bad. Jude thrived playing with fast players like vini and rodrygo.
Bellingham is so overrated.

@@Bread_Garlichousethen starts throwing tantrums and theatrics with every dive. Straight from the House of Neymar.
This isn’t fifa mate 👍
@@Bread_Garlichouse I guess El Clasico ain’t a big game 🤷♂️ altho in madrid he doesn’t need to show up bc he has players around him that can step up.
England were not good, they had a ridiculously easy path to the final and barely made it. Spain didn’t have a particularly good game by their high standards, and were still head and shoulders better than England, who in my opinion, played their best game in the final.
England's best player started 0/7 games and their worst player started 7/7. Says it all
Palmer?
@@matthewgreen161 actually Guehi has been our best player
Gordon?
Watch Wharton next season at Palace. You may change your mind, but I agree with you 100%.
Unforgiveable that Southgate didn't learn, but Walker and Stones are so dozy. They're just unable to concentrate for 90 minutes.
I am spanish we were there from 64 to 08 so i fully understand your feelings but for sure at some point this will come to an end and believe me the feeling when you win after so much time (and again u will win soon u have been very close lately) is so much better
Why can't England and their fans just admit they got beat by the better team. 7 games 7 wins 🇪🇸 ❤
Gary mentioned Cole Palmer and the host talked about the Spain midfield. What is it with Cole Palmer? He is class and changed every game when he came on and scored last night. He should’ve been on for the whole second half.
Until England get rid of the mindset of safe no risk game play they will continue to fail. We can all accept losing but it’s the manner in which you go about it.
Kane foden and rice were the standout of being disappointing in the euros, in my opinion. Bellingham was a mixed bag
Kane not the best ever in his position. Alan Shearer is.
Underrated comment.
Jimmy Greaves
Not Geoff Hurst??
We only got to the final because it was such a easy run (yes we got into that position) but any half decent team was putting us out
Been Watching England 29 Years and Shock Surprise we choked another Final as always… same old England just a New Generation.
Not really bro, you just lose to the first quality side you meet. Southgate has been lucky in avoiding such sides until late in the comps.
The luck will run out eventually and it will be a last 16 exit to Spain/France/Portugal/Argentins or Germany (who seem to be getting their act together after 6 horrid years)
@@Bread_Garlichouse like I said I’ve been watching England for 29 Years this is how England do every tournament we face off against nobody teams just to scam our way through the Group stages the first time we face a proper team we get slammed!
Fucks me off because we should be having International Friendlies against Big Teams to prepare us for these Tournaments and these moments not have a friendly against some shitty Country for us to slam which gives the team false confidence. England only play good football when it’s against poor countries and even then we can be disappointing to watch. England can’t handle the pressure against Big Countries.
@TriumphAsh we did . Brazil and Belgium.
@@luckyducky7166 Brazil is a nobody team now a days & Belgium are a shadow of their former selves not a chance England beat Prime Brazil or Belgium. Ronaldinho used to Toy with us still remember that free kick from him which lobbed David Seaman
@@TriumphAsh Friendlies are just that, friendlies. They don't count and most top teams play them like they don't count, so they could play France, Spain and Argentina every other week in a friendly and still get beaten in a tournament.
Got lucky getting out of the group.
Got lucky with Slovakia
Got lucky with the Swiss
Gets a penalty that never was with the Dutch.
Played boring football through out the tournament.
Spain stopped this nonsense.
The late goals covered over the cracks of poor tactics and formation choices.
Spain were better than us and we were lucky to get as far as we did. Consistently starting with Kane in the knockouts meant we were effectively a man down for most of the time. Whether he had an injury or was tired from a long season, whatever it was everybody but Southgate could see he was not at his best.
Spain won against croatia, italy, germany and france. England almost got kicked out in the group stage.
And
Of course it's crushing in the short term, but we've got a group of young quality players who regularly reach the latter stages of tournaments and who are gonna grow with their experiences with their (top) clubs and with the international team etc. That's a positive.
As soon as I saw Pickford playing longball boom boom boom I knew it was over xD
What do you mean?
@@rh.m6660 Pickford is in a team filled with Real Madrid, city, and arsenal players; teams who are heavily possession dominant and like to keep the ball but every chance he gets he punts that sht away and squanders possession
@@darren3654 literally have so many technical gifted players and we play Sam Allardyce ball. It’s embarrassing.
@@darren3654 honestly Pickford in the moment he tried to play it close the high pressing of Spain led to several dangerous situation so I wouldn't blame him but the tactical preparation of the team
The whole team is 💩
Everyone always ignores the terrible football we played throughout and Southgates stubborness to play his same favourites no matter their performance levels. Another easy route to another final and Southgate blew it again. Gary protecting him as usual, the critism should be massive because its deserved.
Not a mystery why we aren’t winning. It’s Southgate. His record is flattered by easy runs, but gets battered when he faces a good team. Think Hodgson would have done better with this team than him. Sick of him
I rate him and Hodgson the same tbh, the kindest thing I can say about Southgate is that he didn't have Kane taking corners. Both out of their depth by the end.
