I could've got this game at the flea market for like $2 like 15 years ago. At the time I hadn't heard of it and didn't know how rare (and how good) it is. Got home and looked online and saw it selling for like a staggering $40 (lol). Went back the next week and it was gone. One of my biggest gaming regrets. :(
One of the reasons I like the NES is it's a console for the people. A lot of its best games are dirt-cheap, and there's a lot of hidden gems for under a tenner. Games like this fly in the face of this notion: it costs as much as a mortgage payment, and it's really just another lovely platformer on a system renowned for its lovely platformers. It makes the NES look like an elite console for hardcore collectors. NES enthusiasts shouldn't be deprived of games like this because of a fabricated reputation.
A. No this is definitely a stand out platformer in the library, with a level of polish and variety in gameplay not seen on the NES, like at all. B. tHeRe'S tHeSe tHiNgS CaLlEd rEpRoDuCtIoN cArtDrIdGeS
The developer, Takeru, was staffed by Capcom alumni (including Akira Kitamura, the creator of Mega Man), and it shows. They released another Famicom game called Cocoron that is not quite as good, but still worth checking out.
So THIS is why it costs an arm and a leg. Mark reviewed it in the future and it created a time paradox which caused it to be a low production run which caused it to be expensive now. If I bring Jar-Jar's head to the intergalactic space arcade would you trade? That or all the space ninjas bought them..
They're pretty arbitrary with it... I get some of the licences are super-convoluted, but on the other hand, there's things that should be straightforward to license, but are still nowhere to be seen... I have no idea how they decide what gets sold and what doesn't.
One of my favorite NES games. Thank God I got it back before NES game prices exploded. By the way, Gamm (the rock monster) can walk on spikes, I'm impressed you managed to get trough some of those spike heavy areas without using him.
@@superduty2023 Not sure what year exactly, around 07-08 I think. I paid about $14 for it, though what I have is the way less expensive European version.
This is great! I've never seen an actual review of THE GAME, just all the hoolabaloo around how expensive and rare it is to collect. You do mankind a great service, Mark.
Don't get me wrong, I'd much rather have the real thing, but I'll never be able to afford it(would never spend that much on a game anyways) so I go with the next best thing.
Mark, you can walk on the spikes if you are Gamm (the rock golem). It would have made your playthrough way easier. Anyway, you are so lucky now to have a copy of that.
Would have to be a repro right? A good looking repro for that price. But your average NES game doesn’t sell for $20, and it’s too high to be one of those deals where the seller didn’t know the treasure they had. I was lucky enough to get my copy in the 90s when KayBee was shutting down. Bought a handful of games pretty cheap (unfortunately didn’t include Flintstones). I just wish I was smart enough to keep the boxes back then!
The price of the real cartridge is indeed, insane. Leave those for the guys who have bottomless wallets and bragging needs for owning 'Color a Dinosaur'. Seeing as how I would never ever see a real copy of this, I shamelessly went for a 100+ in 1 cart that sold for a reasonable amount and got an HDMI NES clone to run it on. Budget under fifty and got many fun & rare games. NOTE: Know what you are getting with multi-carts. Many like to have a hundred slightly altered versions of Super Mario Bros. So, do your RUclips viewing homework before blindly buying even a few of these.
Oh man.... rub it in, will ya ;_; I bought this game from a Blockbuster when they were clearing out their NES rentals in the early 90's and ended up leaving it and a bunch of my old NES games on the curb when I moved out of my dad's place. Such regret...
Why? Net neutrality is just a government power grab over the internet with a name that makes it seem good, exactly like the patriot act. Why are big corporations like google and youtube allowed to discriminate against data but ISP's are not?
I mean... Surprise at Dinosaur Peak and Shatnae are also Good. I imagine that HAS to be a repro. I've never med someone at a flea market dumb enough to not do at least SOME cursory research into WTF they are selling.
the obnoxious music change every time you swap characters was what killed this game for me, its not that the character specific music themes weren't cool, they actually sounded awesome, but changing between them each and every time you swap characters was not a good idea, it made the game sound ridiculous.
I don't think that's necessarily the case. A CIB version of the game sells for just under $1000.00. Is it really worth it for the average gamer? Not really. Some people have bigger priorities than gaming alone.
I'm just saying that he should have been able to tell us it was a repro. If he doesn't really know if it is fake he shouldn't be collecting games. And actually cart only is $1000. I'm not bashing him for not buying a thousand dollar game.
He actually has a copy? $20???? Welp...(boozes)...Also they should ask those ex capcom devs who made this(Strider/Megaman 1/Ghouls and Ghosts) to come back for Megaman 11
I'm poor so I'll probably never play this, but judging from this video I'd say this is easily the most visually stunning game on NES. It's possibly even more pretty to look at than anything on SNES also.
Which is why I emulated it on my PC. The price for this game is absolutely ridiculous. I would love to have it on cartridge, but not for that outrageous price. It is a good game just too bad it is out of reach for collectors that play their games like me.
I have a cheap reproduction of this and I made a custom label for it that looks like it’s a black label game . People who pay $1000 for this are throwing their money away.
It must get tiresome to list of names after each video. I know I'm tired of hearing them, even just for the few seconds before I can exit from the video.

And this is the last "gaming" video by CGR.
After this, he started reviewing comics and pens.
He deliberately killed this channel.

It’s like He doesn’t know what he wants to do, went from comics, to drawing comics, I think doing music stuff. Now idk what hes doing lol

So sad this was the last review 😢
YEah miss too, this was something I'd love coming home to from work. Oh well. Time moves on, and not a "Amazon Prime" person :P.
vectorman 2 was the last review on youtube but he reviewed more games on amazon prime, defender on September 12, 2018 was his last.
Cases like this, where the carts are insanely priced, is why I'm so thankful that emulation is a thing.
Why has this never come out on the Virtual Console? Or the NES Classic Edition?
Good question, but that's why you hack it.
Duke Jaywalker licensing issues?
I wouldn't think licensing is the issue. Taito has no problem pimping out Bubble Bobble and Legend of Kage everywhere.

they probably think it's not "popular enough" because they don't look into how much people love the game
For the NES, the graphics are outstanding!
Just yesterday I finished *Bucky O' Hare* which is a highly recommended game on the Nes, and now this one is on the list!

20 bucks is about the price for a repro. Should be a little cheaper used, though. No telling how long repros will last since they don't go through QC.
First thing I thought of when I saw the title was Billy from the Game Chasers
the reviewer doesnt know the golem can walk on spikes ...

It looks like one. Nothing wrong with that, if there's more of a demand for the game than there was in 1992.

If we could check the back, match the board and look at the sticker, then I can say if its a legit copy or not.
