Ronald Reagan (R) vs. Walter Mondale (D)
Showcasing an idealized, homogeneous America from start to finish, this is consistently called one of the most emotionally effective political ads ever made.
Studies show that when it comes to political advertising, we feel first and think later. So the most impactful campaign ads aim for our hearts-fear, anger, hope and pride-and they run the gamut from stirring to downright dirty. I Approve This Message, an exhibition about the emotional impact of political advertising in a landscape altered by the internet, was scheduled to open at the New-York Historical Society in September 2020. The COVID-19 lockdown halted those plans, but we want to share a few of the exhibition’s ads, particularly as we head towards election day on Nov. 3, 2020.

"People buy homes"
damn, those were the days
They can be those days again. Just need to elect people who will care about the stabilization of the dollar and interest rates, rather than trying to prop up the economy and delaying recessions by too low of interest rates that cause asset bubbles.
Many people lost those those homes do to a loosening of regulations that led to bad loan practices.
Trump 2024!
And women got married and then had babies!
thanks to Reagan himself we cant lol
Sure Mondale saw that and said to himself “we have no fucking chance”
they had no chance only winning minnisota and washington dc reagan won everything else
its such a good commercial that Bush senior won the 1988 election that line "why would we ever want to go back" propelled them further
@@TheNecropolis20Reagan said to a White House staffer winning minessota would had been nice as a Christmas present
I imagine there were a ton of younger Reagan voters that also bought Springsteen’s Born in the USA album ( Freakonomics 1984).
No matter how your stands is on Ronald Reagan, i think this ad should be the gold standard on what a great political ad should be. Tell us about the great things that our country has achieved and what great things are awaiting us in the future.
Most political ads these days are based on fearmongering and "other side bad" without actually saying what great things they do.
To be fair that’s because most recent presidents have done many good things😂
This ad is just propoganda with the aim of making you forget the bad stuff.
Totally agree. I am a huge Carter fan. I'm from England but went Plains Georgia last year because I really admire President Carter and I know this advert was from Walter Mondale challenging Reagan but this advert it superb. It is very emotional but in a good way. Really speaks to a voter. His team did very well on this.
There would be the danger that people would see that ad and go "How can he say things are good when there's all these bad things happening" or something like that.
Check out JB's latest ad after State of the Union. It's pretty positive.
I love this commercial! The best political commercial in history!

@@NotYourTypicalNegro I was curious so I did a count. There were 56 people shown, and although its hard to tell, it appears that about 52 were caucasion, 1 was asian, two were Hispanic or Native American, and one was Black. That certainly would not have been relfective of the population at that time. If that were the case there would be about 6-7 Black Americans in that video instead of one.

I was a great ad. Mostly because it’s content was so true.
10/10 political ad.

Also, so damned uplifting and inspiring as far as campaign ad’s go.
I am! I hadn’t watched it for a few years and I’m always taken aback at how good it is
same entry point here: the podcast made me watch it.
I am a firm left winger who found this president to be where the modern rot began in America due to corporations rising to be more powerful than governments under the weak western leadership of Thatcher and Reagan who bent their peoples and many others over a desk for whatever the hell a bastard of a capitalist wanted at the time, resulting in the mass decline and ruination of the majority western workforce over the proceeding 40yrs to today,
but it was a very good ad campaign admittedly.

OMG a campaign that talks about buying a home, getting married, having low inflation, low interest rates, cheap gas. Give Gen-Z this Regan guy!
I wasn't born in the 1980s, but it's currently midnight in America, and we're in a Nightmare than a Dream.

I'm sure we'd be happy if we went back to our position in the 80s. The 90s were ridiculous. The 80s were at least doable.
It was the greed of the 80's that led us here. Things looked great for a short time under Reagan but that's also the time that wealth gap stop closing in and began to reverse course.
Once upon a time in America, we were a little more civil to each other.

@Laughing with Dragons That is false, little buddy.
@Laughing with Dragons Why so mad, cupcake?
This inter-generational argument is counterproductive
But it IS bashing the other side. Just nicely. Every statistic stated is in relation to 1980. They all but say, "Why [the hell] would you want to turn back the clock to [Jimmy Carter's] 1980?" And at the very end it does explicitly say, "Why would we ever want to return to where we were less than four short years ago?" with the unspoken ending "... when a Democrat was in charge? I remember that time, I finished high school and looking forward to voting for my first president, Ronald Reagan. I was preparing to enter the world of living on my own soon and hoping Reagan so we don't go back to foolish weak leadership and economic turmoil. That's how it looked to me and I was so glad on election night, a real landslide.
I cast my first Presidential vote in 1980. I was a freshman in college and did an absentee ballot. I voted for Ronald Reagan. A badge of honor I'm proud to disclose.
Compared to the ... Republicans that are there today which are conservatives in Name only? Honestly voting for Reagan would be a plus. And I am a leftist.
@@CrniWukI agree with you and I’m a conservative. I have many complaints about the current GOP and one of them is lack of leadership. The GOP was way better when Reagan was leader. Trump is no Reagan. Reagan was liked by republicans and democrats alike. One great thing Reagan did when he was in office was bring the two major parties close together and helped unite the country as a whole. That’s part of the reason how he was able to win 49/50 states in 1984. No one in either party today can bring the country together like Reagan did. There is too much division and I believe both sides are responsible.
Well... This advertisement certainly does not work in the the summer of 2022.
To make it accurate for 2022 you need minorities burning everything down in the background.
Reagan destroyed the competition back in the 1980s. No one even came close.

When Bill Bennett, Reagan's Drug Tsar, hosted the Salem Radio Network's (SRN) morning program, it was called Morning in America.
Not perfect, but America under Reagan was in a far better state than seventies America with the humiliation of Vietnam, Watergate, energy shortages, economic problems and two weak presidents.

It was very wise that this ad targeted financial stability - luckily nothing untoward happened in financial markets during the next four years of Reagan’s presidency and his free market policies - especially surround the bond markets.
The Republicans need to go back to these values, now.
The ad only reflected, accurately and poetically, the reality that people saw all around them. Reagan won 49 states because he delivered the goods.

An ad that inspired millions... and then just a few years later the S&L crisis and so many of those homes were foreclosed on.
As was the plan all along…
This might be an effective ad, but it’s sure not a good one.
Much like Bush the Younger’s “Wolves” ad in 2004.
@@osurpless”it’s an effective ad but not a good one”
“Your plan saved the world from nuclear war but it was still a bad plan”
S&L deregulation was under Carter - he signed the deregulation law in 1980 when large numbers of thrift banks were in trouble because of the high inflation rate. The majority of S&Ls failed in Reagan's term as a result of Carter's fiscal and monetary policy actions and resulting high inflation that many thrifts could not recover from. Pinning the S&L crisis on Reagan is laughable. Nobody lost their homes because of the S&L crisis, either. Their deposits and mortgages were insured.
@@stevenshook3348 - Reagan most certainly inherited that first part of raising the interest rates to control inflation...
Then in 1981 Reagan and his advisors set forth on policies of mass de-regulation for financial institutions. A policy based on that of Texas which allowed financial institutions to invest almost wherever they liked with little to no oversight. No oversight on risk, no oversight on backup. Real estate developers got a whiff of this and then low and behold, new S&L applications went through the roof. Sadly, the economy was beginning to show signs of recovery before Reagans de-regulation policies, which made it far worse. Did people lose their homes? Not in the same way they did in 2008 however, millions of older American's lost their life's savings and were forced to sell their homes. Homes that had lost significant value due to the crisis.
Culturally we were at an all time high
Politically we were at one of our lowest
