Is it possible to fish for Halibut with little to no structure like the corbina and spotfin? It’s the number one fish I struggle with in the surf. And is Oceanside a valid place to fish for them?
It definitely is possible to fish for halibut successfully at sandy beaches. You’ll look for the same troughs and holes etc. but I would say most sandy beaches will require you to walk a lot more as you try as many good looking areas as possible. I find them better where I know hard structure is and then I fish the sandy areas around the hard structure. Hope this helps!

Hey nick, im a noob. I’m using a Carolina rig in San Diego looking for perch. Am I constantly reeling in or do I cast, take up slack, and let it sit? Thanks for all the info.
Depending on what you’re using for bait, you’re typically casting out and doing your best to not retrieve at all while keeping tension. The best overview I can give you is on my website and in this video here. But here’s a helpful article: surffishingsocalsd.com/how-to-go-surf-fishing/ I’d encourage you to read that entire article and I think you’ll end up knowing the answers to a lot of your questions.
Hey Nick, my name is Roger. I've never surfed fishing before I would like to learn. Is there any way I can get in touch with you and maybe go fishing 🎣 one of these days I'm in Temecula thanks!!!
Hey nick! I just have a question. my usual fishing spot is del mar beach. recently, I have gotten nothing. Do you know of any good spots in that general area? Also, this may be a longshot, but I was wondering if we could go fishing together in the near future. It would be amazing to learn from you to get experience to get better at surf fishing. Anyways thanks and keep up the great videos!.
Hey Kenan! Unfortunately, between my guiding business, my 9-5, content business and personal fishing time, I can’t commit to getting out there recreationally with many people. I can tell you things are heating up though and although I’d encourage you to explore all the spots sd has to offer, Del Mar should be very productive in the coming weeks. Thanks Nick. What licensing does a person visiting from AZ need to surf fish? I know some piers don’t require a license but I understand you do for surf fishing?
What time of year do you surf fish with success? Obviously summer and warmer temps I assume are best but are there months you absolutely don’t fish? Thanks.
It’s different every year to a degree but historically Nov-Dec usually has a tough patch and usually there’s a time between Feb-March that’s challenging. Mostly it’s cuz those are transitional months for species to start and stop feeding

Thanks Nick. What licensing does a person visiting from AZ need to surf fish? I know some piers don’t require a license but I understand you do for surf fishing?
Yes you would either need a nonresident annual with a ocean fishing validation or you’d just get a standard 1 day or multi day temporary license
This link is the in depth version of that answer: surffishingsocalsd.com/california-beach-and-pier-fishing-heres-what-license-you-need/
