if you got any ideas.... go off 🙏💕here's all the info
    - 2001 dodge ram van 3500 5.9l v8
    - issues when breaking down…
    - the van slightly shakes and stops accelerating in the middle of driving
    - problems started with a corroded spark plug in the first cylinder
    - that was replaced, the van worked fine for awhile… then broke down with the same issues
    - fuel pump, pick up coil, and pc127 sensor were replaced
    - van ran for a bit and then broke down again with the same issues
    - the van won’t recreate the issue at the shops she’s at
    - it seems that she only has the problem when I drive her around normally, let her sit, then go to drive her the second time… it’s upon that second drive that she has the issue
    - someone has speculated it’s something having to do with a part expanding/malfunctioning when it reaches a certain temperature
    - the van is built to run on propane, mechanic #2/the one I won’t go back to suggested maybe it was something to do with the fuel lines

      Possible air/vacuum hose leak?

    • @tenningale
      @tenningale 9 месяцев назад +9

Could be a lot of things. Temperature-related issue, fuel system issue, electrical or sensor problem, ignition system, malfunctioning ECU, vacuum leaks, or something else… May require process of elimination
Wiring issues or faulty sensors can sometimes work intermittently and are difficult to diagnose because they might not always produce a fault code or show up during standard testing.
Might include problems with the fuel lines, regulators, or the propane injection system.
Although you mentioned the spark plug was replaced, there could be other issues in the ignition system. This includes spark plug wires, the distributor cap, rotor, or ignition coil. These parts can sometimes work when cold but fail when they heat up.
The ECU could be affected by temperature changes or could have intermittent faults.
Vacuum leaks can cause erratic behavior in the engine, especially as it warms up and parts expand, changing the characteristics of the leak.
Given the complexity/intermittent nature of the problem, it might be challenging to diagnose without experiencing the issue first-hand. It’s important to have a mechanic who is familiar with propane-fueled vehicles take a look.

I mentioned this because I know you did have your gas tank punctured when they stole gas…
If any debris is in the gas tank, it can work its way into the fuel pump and you will continuously be replacing fuel pumps with the same intermittent type problem that you’re having …
You can remedy this by simply putting a glass fuel filter on the intake side of the fuel pump …
The beautiful thing about this is that you get to see inside the filter if there is sand, rocks or epoxy, anything that might be in your gas tank, working its way down the fuel line ..
This is very very inexpensive and at least you’ll know that you have clean fuel going to the fuel pump if this doesn’t remedy the problem … good luck

If I had to guess, it sounds a lot like there's an issue with the throttle body. I'm not entirely sure what make or model the van is, but if the throttle body is becoming stuck intermittently in a closed position you could end up with a fuel mixture that's too rich and doesn't ignite which would explain misfiring cylinders, crudded up spark plugs and the sputtering to a stop when there isn't enough air in the fuel mixture. I recently had a similar sounding issue on a 2010 Chrysler Sebring and replacing the throttle body solved it entirely.

This sounds about right, assuming this make an model doesn't have some other intake feature.
Not to muddy up the waters here (either) but I wonder if her model some kind of EGR system as well that could be wrecking havoc on operation after getting "up to temp" ; I think her vehicle is from the late 80's, so maybe not.
She, unfortunately, is having a hard time finding a Tech that can sit down and go over the drawings of this particular model to zero in on the root cause; time is money * shrug *.

Just a couple rules of thumb:
    1) Anything beyond a week is too much. If they haven’t even looked at your vehicle, they aren’t interested. Pull your vehicle out and find someone else.
    2) Being rude with a customer is just bad business. These garages survive on word of mouth. Rudeness = pulling your car out and a bad google review.
    3) If you don’t know a good mechanic, you are right to ask your community to recommend one. If you do find a good one hang onto him/her.
    4) If Bertha is dead, I think you should rely on your community. The vast majority of us here like you and want to see you succeed. I for one have no issue donating to such a worthy human being.

Also, another very simple trick to check your sparkplug wires and distributor cap is to run your car at night in the dark, opening the hood and see if you see any extra sparks down there taking a shortcut from your wires to any metal parts. If so, time for wires…..

    • @britttttt_
      @britttttt_ 9 месяцев назад +1

Agreed, you can also mist some water over the wires which might help show sparks from any broken wires. Swapping wires between cylinders to see if the misfire follows (check with a bluetooth code reader) is another way. Or just change them if they're old. Spark plug wires, distributor cap and rotor are good to change from time to time if you haven't.

One possibility that is relatively easy to resolve is that your fuel relay is failing. This is an inexpensive part and easy to replace DIY. It's difficult for mechanics to detect faulty relays when the problem is intermittent since most of the time, it's actually working. The fuel relay controls the fuel flow from the gas tank to your engine, and when it is acting up, the symptoms you describe can occur, but then work fine again after sitting for awhile.

Even though people frown upon it, sometimes getting a new engine is better than buying another used vehicle. You don't know what the new/used vehicle problems could occur. I have a van and if my motor goes or transmission I have decided to replace both. I figure it would be cheaper to do that then get new or purchase used. I also know that it would last for a long time, jmo. I follow Chrome too from CA and he just replaced his trans and motor back to back Yikes good luck.. I hope you find someone

Hi Ahle, sorry about your cute nose. The first vehicle I ever had had this same problem. It turned out to be vapor locking which was caused by the routing of the fuel line that was too close to a part of the exhaust system. As such, whenever there was excessive heating of the fuel line the fuel would vaporize therefore not enough fuel could reach the engine. The fix was to relocate the fuel line so the line wouldn't overheat. Before you do get a new engine I suggest verifying the fuel line is adequately routed. If it's not that it sounds like you've spent enough time trying to fix it, and probably best to move on to another vehicle. Good luck 🤞

Hi hon, sorry about the problems you are having. My family used to have a GMC Van for road trips and we experienced what's called VAPOR LOCK. It happened when we were driving in high altitudes, and uphill. Then it happened sporadically. It seems like the engine is dying and won't take any more gas..."Vapor lock happens when your fuel boils in your carburetor or your fuel line. Vaporized fuel creates back pressure in your fuel system and prevents gas from getting to your engine." The possible fix: "The first step in preventing vapor lock is to rout fuel lines away from exhaust parts, heater hoses, etc. You can also use Heat Shields where possible. Another option is to install an Electric Fuel Pump near the tank. This pressurizes most of the fuel in the lines." You can also see if there are fuel additives. Just google VAPOR LOCK in engines or check out RUclips videos 🙂 :-)))))) EDIT: I saw that your fuel pump was replaced but you can still suggest it to a mechanic b/c it sounds like the same problem...

hello, i had a propane converted truck (Chevy silverado) for a number of years, i had similar issues. i would start it up and it was fine drive 5-10 minutes it was fine, id go in somewhere and come out and it wouldn't start or ran horrible and would stall out and sometimes leave me stranded for a few hours, but when i came back it would start up just fine and run. long story short what i found was that the vaporizer on the left inner fender would freeze up hence the intermittent and temperature problem that goes away on its own. when id let it sit a few hours i could drive just fine again, this would happen even in the middle of summer. what i found out is that there is a vaporizer on the fuel system that is connected to the radiator by a hose that circulates antifreeze around inside of it. the hose is connected to almost the top of the radiator near the filler neck and cap, so if the radiator was even a little bit low the vehicle didn't over heat or any issues but there wasn't enough to circulate through the vaporizer and cause it to intermittently run rough and freeze up but fine later on. so please just have a look and see if your radiator is filled to the very top and see if you see that small hose and it might be your issue. wouldn't that be something instead of paying a shop tons of money you fixed it with a little coolant. i hope this helps and i wish you and everyone and safe and happy Christmas !!!

I think you are right. During the winter, the line on my kiln freezes if my tank is low. The way to check if this is the problem is to pour hot water over the lines from tank to engine. If that solves the problem temporarily, then you are correct. Though I don't deal with motors, what you say makes absolute sense.

Hey, since this is your first time getting the old mechanic runaround, and especially because youre doing it independently, i can totally understand why you were overcome with stress. I jusg want to remind you its good to cry, and its okay to feel so overwhelmed.
That being said, this is a classic occurence, and now you know that. Dont be so nice to thesf mechanics. State your mind.
As for the issue, it sounds either electrical (as heat can cause erratic electrical issues) or its still on the fuel supply side. Vapor lock, bad injectors when they get hot (could also explain misfiring), you said pump is new but Id have someone make sure it was changed based in your experience. Check fuel and electrical. Remember though, process of elimination is normal! You will change many things! Its okay!

When they work they work great, when they don't scrap em, they are notorious for burning plugs and heads out. If the engine wasn't setup to take the heat differences it can fry it simply put. I would look at the intake to start with. You may need to look for a mechanic that does machinery specifically lp forklifts.

Diagnostic Scanner to obtain fault codes (Autel or other brand):
    1) Make sure you do not disconnect your battery, for any reason. Also, do not allow the battery to lose charge, where the loss of charge will result in the loss of engine fault codes required to diagnose the issue that were stored during the last event.
    2) Then, find a mechanic with a vehicle diagnostic scanner (ODB2 or specific port for your van), request the mechanic pull the engine fault codes required to properly diagnose issues, then test drive as needed to confirm to then provide you with estimate required to resolve corresponding issues.
    3) Then, if further issue arise from replacing components in the chain, ask the Mechanic/Technician to diagnose the codes (scanner)/locate components/identify/replace/test/pull codes, rinse & repeat until issue resolved.

I have to jump in here before watching the whole video. Sorry. The worst case scenario on that spark plug was not replacing the whole engine. It would have been getting a new cylinder head, and those can be found at junk yards like Pick-a-part. That would have been the extreme case. I don't know why mechanics take advantage of women like they do.

If I understand correctly, it doesn't even "crank" after it quits- meaning, you don't hear the typical wah-wah-wah-wah of the engine being cranked (turned) over by the starter (when you try to start it). Given that, I highly suspect you have a power failure, an "open" in a circuit. I don't want to send you down the wrong road but I highly suspect a problem at the main fuse block under the hood. Unfortunately, the only way any mechanic will be able to verify it is it will have to be doing it at the time and he/she will have to be at the fuse block with a test light checking for power (12 volts) at the starter solenoid and ASD relay (automatic shut down relay). Chrysler products use an ASD relay to power up the coil and fuel injectors, and the ASD relay is triggered (turned on) by the PCM once the PCM sees a crank sensor signal. If that ASD relay were to open, the vehicle would shut off while driving (exactly what is happening to you). The fact that it won't crank and the fact that the vehicle shut off while driving leads my brain to a power failure in the fuse box- and that can be intermittent, just like what you are experiencing. If you need to bounce some questions off of me hit me up at gearhead4you and that is at yahoo

Vehicle seizing up after driving it for awhile sounds like the transmission is dying a slow death. Maybe coolant line going to it is bad, too. Easily $5k+. (I'm not a mechanic)

First of all, worry about yourself, and then the van. Young people dont just faint out of nowhere, unless they have a health issue, or had the jab. Did you had the jab? Maybe you should go to a place where they tune cars. It sounds like an electrical issues. Some corroded contact or bad connections. You could try and get a OBD Engine System Diagnostic Tools and read out values, the next time it has problems. Wishing the best for you.

The easiest answer is also the hardest choice. Time to retire it. That van will be problems forever. Since this is not a normal van you'd have to find a specialty mechanic. An outfitter that does the propane conversion for vans. That's going to cost a decent amount of money.
So you have to look at this as a fork in the road. On one hand you live with this junker and end up homeless parked under a bridge. On the other you quit this lifestyle and start building a foundation for the future. Unlike most people you're attractive and articulate which is a huge advantage. I believe you have a very good chance at becoming a more successful vlogger or joining a company that alines with your interests. What I don't see is any success repairing that old junker or continuing to be homeless.

This is an alternator issue it seems. I had the same problem on my Honda Odyssey 2007 which was purchased in 2006. The dates matter since your van seems to be a 2001 which is early for "drive by wire" but my Honda Odyssey was the first drive by wire Odyssey that Honda made. Basically, when the alternator fails, it doesn't charge the battery anymore so each subsequent start uses the remaining charge in the battery. This can go on for a while as the battery is being depleted. Also, the alternator may be failing but not quite dead so the battery may be getting some charge which masks the diagnosis further. When I ran out of battery (finally) I had the same symptoms as you describe. The car was running and I was driving on the road but then the accelerator failed to make the car move forward from a stoplight and I had to coast to to the side of the road. The car was on but since the accelerator is "drive by wire" there wasn't enough power from the battery to make it work properly.
So how can you diagnose this? First, when the car is running, get a volt meter and measure the voltage at the battery terminals. With the van running, the voltage should be around 13.8v which means the alternator is charging the battery and therefore operating correctly. If you see a reading like 11.7 or something below 12v, then the alternator is dead and needs to be replaced.
Now you could also need to replace the battery, when was the last time you did that? If the alternator checks out fine (again when running) then it may be that you just need to change the battery and that its life has run out. This is actually the better of the two scenarios since changing out an alternator will definitely cost you more. If the engine is off, measure the battery voltage at the terminals again. A healthy battery should measure around 12.6v. If it's measuring 12v or below it's dead or near dead. Hope this helps...

I was thinking the same thing... that the alternator isn't charging the battery properly, but the way she described the issue is that it happens suddenly and doesn't get progressively worse as we would see with a battery that is running down & can't power the ignition coil properly.

Hang in there Ahle, for mechanics dont talk "straight" nowadays. I myself have been dealing with a number of mechanics about a radiator install and it has been an emotional roller-coaster ride. 2 of the mechanics completely "ghosted" me and I never heard from them again. One of the mechanics came and removed my radiator from my rig but ordered the wrong replacement radiator which did not fit and then completely ghosted me with radiator completely removed from my rig and I was "stuck like Chuck" on a local Fire Department property for more than 7 days until I finally reached him again to come put my original radiator back in. I did do a band-aid JB Weld patch job on the crack in my radiator, but I can only go about 10 miles at a time before the rig runs hot and I have to pull over and cool it off (frustrating)😖. But anyway, all I'm saying is that I feel your pain, and I want to encourage you to continue because this too shall pass. Very sorry to hear about your nose, hope you feel better soon. Also, some times you can find a good mechanic by just asking the people who work for O'Reilly's Auto Parts or Autozone if they know of a local mechanic and they usually do because the mechanics go there to buy their parts. Thanks for sharing, keep the videos coming and safe travels 🙏

Vehicles are unobtanium these days, so people hang on to what they have as long as possible, i.e. fixing as long as they can. This makes all mechanics very busy and they can pick and choose the jobs they like. Complicated, intermittent issues are at the very bottom of the list of items to work on, so they either pass or have you wait for their business to slow down. Did you try to qualify the issues you have and do some heavy google searching? In the past I found solutions and suggestions for car issues I had.
I am not sure if this van already has coil packs but had issues in the past with individual ignition coils start acting up and they needed replacing. This vintage of van should already have an ODB2 port, so it would be interesting to connect a scanner and see what it reads. Surprised that your "mechanics" did not report on that?! Perhaps if you have a friend with a scanner, borrow it and connect it when the van acts up again, to see what it can read.
You could also try to connect a fellow car youtuber who deals with older vehicles all the time. Dalton from "Pole Barn Garage" or Kevin from "Junkyard Digs" come to mind. They may be able to provide guidance, as they are very knowledgeable.

I hate to say it, but I think you need to find a male friend or relative to do the talking for you. Some guys are just misogynistic and some of them work with cars. It's not fair but it's the world we live in. If you can get help / backup / support from someone who can "talk car" (even if you know EXACTLY as much OR MORE) this might help you. It doesn't sound like you're being taken seriously.

  • @hb5914

Dear Ahle, I don’t know what to say to help you. One detail, if you attempt to replace a corroded/stuck spark plug and for whatever reason you damage the holes’ threads, I have never used them, but they are called helicoil inserts and they are threaded inserts used to reinforce threaded holes. If a helicoil insert doesn’t work then one could replace the entire cylinder head on the bank where the spark plug hole is damaged. So, you would not necessarily have to replace an engine. There would be very significant top end engine work depending on your training, education, mechanical aptitude and mechanical experience. I don’t know if you have done this yet, but have you contacted all your associates, friends, and family to borrow a code reader or scanner. This way you could carefully get some information on what specific systems parts that may need to be tested and/or replaced. The greatest youtube car diagnosticians in the Castle Rock, CO area is Schrodingers Box(channel name) in the Utah area, sorry I don’t know which cities/counties, would be Briansmobile1(channel name)and Roadside Rescue(channel name)There may be a “cartuber” who excels at diagnostics, because it sounds like you need one, not too far from your location. Good luck.

When'd you last replace the starter battery? I've found that with vans that are sat around for long periods of time, the starter battery will start to die and it won't get better, at some point it will completely not hold charge any longer. And you will have to replace it. A battery could fail within 3 years of only using a vehicle intermittently.

I think you have blown your head gasket, there is no reason that the spark plug wont come out, unless using WD-40 so moisture is getting in there and rusting the plug in. I don't think that you would get a trouble code for that, so they are improperly diagnosing the problem, It might be time for a new van. Check your oil dipstick to see if there is any bubbles on the stick, means water or if the oil looks like milkshake means water.

if its a duel fuel vehicle it would start on gasolene and switch over to the gas system once the engine is hot. Not much to go off from your description but it is possible that your broken gas system is trying to still switch over to gas which would turn off the gasolene and the engine would quit. When the engine cools it would switch back to gasolene and fire up? just a guess, good luck with it.
