The fact that the young man was already building the guillotine before he met the young lady, to me shows he's been contemplating "fitting in" to connect to someone for a while now. But when he was rejected by the young lady, that just further validated his ill-gotten decision to cut off his head. Another moral to this story is, as long as you have yourself, you have someone.

About the nine-eleven terrorists, probably the author wanted to tell us that these terrorists were raised blind, I mean they were raised with some seriously nonsense faith that killing innocent people is a good and kind thing. And there is also a chance that these terrorists were realizing that such act is nonsense and bad and evil, but they were psychologically forced by the terroristic community where they were raised. In short, sometimes people are so heavily brainwashed that they have heavily decreased the ability to think critically and determine good and bad things from their natural sense of conscience/morality.
