- Workbench upgrade adding dog holes - cheap and easy to use jig from Ebay.
In this video I will be upgrading my workbench with some dog holes. This will give me greater flexibility in the work flow and will allow me to incorporate new jigs and ideas for my workbench.
To do this task I'm using a cheap jig that I bought from Ebay.

Cargo pockets?!?! This guy doesn’t mess around!! 😀 🤝
I wish I had watch this video earlier. I paid to have a full mdf sheet cnc’d with 20mm holes. Could’ve saved myself a few bob. Good stuff. Cheers 👍😎🇦🇺
Hehe its a simple jig but can save a lot of money in the long run. Workbench tops need to be changed from time to time so it seemed to me like a good solution. As now having the dog holes for a while I can safely say they are great feature.
I just bought a piece of pegboard. Drilled pilot holes to match and then followed uo with a handheld drill using a verticle guide and a 3/4 dia forstner bit. Worked so good on my first few holes, I added a half dozen more. Easy, cheap!
That's actually a great idea! 👍
Ah - yes, an interesting idea. Do you know if the pegboard holes are at the standard mft centres (92 or is it 96mm apart)
Excellent, will have a look when you add the link
Thanks to you Thomas,
I bought one and very pleased with it. Many thanks
Awsome, glad I was able to help👍
Great video as always, love the way you keep it within normal people’s price range with regards to tools etc👍
Thanks😁 I'm just a DIYer and my videos are for people like me. Although I do have a lot of tools they are all in the reasonable price range 😉
I'm so glad that jig is accurate as mine turned up this morning.😁My benchdog order is due tomorrow too. Spooky coincidence.
Hehe it's a very good jig. Simple to use and accurate 😁👍
The short dogs, you could always have a rubber mallet and whack from below to pop it up
Jak zawsze Mega pomysł, tanio i dobrze 💪💪💪
Dzieki wielkie :)
Great informative video
Great informative video. Cheers for taking the time to share
No problem, hope it was helpful.
Casual DIY very helpful thanks as this is the jig that I’m planning on getting. Cheers mate
Haha, love your videos and especially that English is your 2nd and language and you speak it much better than than most English speakers using words like kerfuffle. Class. Ask any kid what that means and they won't have even heard of it lol.
Love the way you live in the real world using a small garage workshop like mine will be next year after my extension is built and the fact you are honest with your mistakes. That's one of the reason's I follow your videos instead of the American's with massive workshops and £1000s in tooling that most can't afford. Lot to learn from that. X
Hehe thank you every much for your kind words. Fantastic to have you in my small community 👍
Only if they've watched Little Britain ;)
Lol hes got twice the tools of most americans.
@@adamwilson4834 but they all cost as much as one of theirs 🤣
@@CasualDIY not hardly, your bandsaw is as much as most of my stuff cost alone.
Super...big like !!!
Thanks👍
Another great video! You're costing me even more money now! haha
Haha thanks 😉
Great video as always and honest please you are good happy thanks as always 🍺🍺👍👍👊
Hehe thanks, yes quite happy with the end result. Now just have to make few jigs, adjust my toggle clamps etc 😉
Great addition to the workbench, Thomas. I am a big fan of dog holes in the shop. Here in USE we use 3/4" but same ideas work on both here and there. A suggestion on the tight dog holes. Lock a bolt into the bench dog, cut the head off. then add a little wax to the hole, put the bench dog on your hand drill and spin it in the hole. That might loosen them up. Just an idea, I've never tried it myself :>) Keep the great videos coming.
Thanks 👍 and the tip sound great I need to try that out😁
Let me know if it works :>)
@@russveinot5754 will do👍
Would be interesting to see a video on clamps, the various different types you’ve got and what you use them for. Would also be good to know which cheap clamps are good and which ones it pays to get better quality ones. The amount of workshop videos I see and think “there must be £000s just in clamps on the wall”.. I’ve literally got a handful of spring clamps, 2 F clamps and 2 quick clamps 😬
That's a very good idea, I'll try to make a video on it 😁👍 thanks for watching
Nice. The tighter ones you can sand a bit, and problem solved
Yes exactly it's not a big deal. I just do it as I go and use it:)
Good job - gonna find a similar jig in the US.
Thanks. Well worth having 👍
Hi, it looks like you experience the table top is zagging down a little bit in the back, is that correct? If so, do you know why this has happened?
No mate no think like that. I left a gap between the legs and top to accommodate some think I haven't made yet lol
Hi, Can you update the website for the Bench Dogs, Thanks again
I have a small bench 1200 X 600 with a top made from two pieces of 18mm ply sandwiched together. Is this too thick to accommodate bench-dogs. Thanks 😁
Hi, not at all you just need to have a router bit that will be able to cut that deep
Great video - really helpful - thanks.
For some reason the link to your recommended tools in the Amazon shop gives me a zero byte file - hoping you can fix the link sometime.
Thank you👍 there seem to be some technical issues today with my links lol
quality
Good video, very helpful, though the link for bench dogs appears not to be working
Hi and thank you. I have updated the link. I think that this will be the problem with Ebay that the links expire or something.
Looks great. I'm wanting to add some dog holes on my work surface. I was gonna go with 20mm. Its easier to make home made dogs and jig etc What size are your dog holes?
They are 20mm. I'm making some DIY dogs as well and few other things so stay tuned 😉
@@CasualDIY look forward to seeing what you come up with
What size holes are they on that jig? Wondering if I could cnc my own template using the 30mm bushing and 12.7mm cutter, won’t be as big but guess it will still work
The holes in the jig are 37mm
Thanks for the quick reply, really appreciate it
@@JayPlayzV3 no worries 👍
Question so what size hole did it make 20mm?
20mm
Where did you buy the overhead extension from as it’s a cool idea having the power leads dangling from above. If you could make a video on how it’s set up that would be super helpful
Already made one mate, check it out ruclips.net/video/ZJMiKX8e0TE/видео.html
Hi Tomasz,
What is the diameter of the jig holes, where you put the router through?
Hi all the dimensions are on the website of the jigs manufacturer. Link in description 👍
@@CasualDIY Sadly, these guys don't deliver internationally and I was thinking of designing and ordering something similar at a local CNC service provider.
So, I was interested in the jig hole diameter, information that doesn't appear to be published on their website. I've worked it out to something like 37.3 or maybe 38 mm, but I'm not entirely sure.
Anyway, thanks for taking the time to reply. Cheers!
What size will be the hole on the workbench?
20mm 👍
Nice video 👍I bought the same jig. But can’t work out your accent for the life of me?? 😂
Haha well I'm Polish so that will explain the funny accent 🤣
Thomas, is this jig available in the US market? Thank you for the simplicity of your methods creating accurate dog holes.
Not sure I just found it on Ebay
Thank you Thomas
@@rashidtayidi1423 I know it was a year ago, but for others I found it on eBay and yes it is available to be shipped to the US. It costs about $47 and about that much to be shipped to the US.
A little follow up the one I found on eBay was from Australia.
Will people in the USA be able to cope with 20mm holes and metric spacings?
Great addition to your workbench. The eBay link to the bench dogs doesn't work though.
Hi mate, managed to find their website, check out the description of this video, I have added a link there. Hope it will work for you ok this time :)
@@CasualDIY nice one, they're the same as I've got. Decent gear!
@@garethsharp4039 yes not too bad at all, but will be making a DIY version of them... several kinds 🤣
@@garethsharp4039 Postage is £15 now for the jig, it was £9.99 when on eBay
So i'm looking at doing this. but i have a question, the holes in the CNC JIG i assume there are larger that the 30mm guide bush to allow for the movement on the router to cut the 20mm hole use with straight cutter bit? Could you provide links to the bit and the bush guide you used?
Hi, yes it's bigger. The bushing came with the router. The bit was a normal straight bit. I'll get the dimensions for you when I come back from work👍
What centres are the dog holes
You mean size? 20mm
@@CasualDIY sorry, no,from hole to hole, are the centres 96mm, as on the Festool worktop?
Thank you, will definitely purchase. Also, if you decide to set jig length ways, as opposed to side ways, could you use 20mm dogs to set you up?
@@jamescurtis7194 that's a good question I can't remember and I don't have access to my workshop till June to even check for you. Sorry
@@jamescurtis7194 yes you can, although I think the instructions for the jig said to do it the way I did. But it doesn't matter really, you just make your own custom design.
Damn. So at time of this video the jig was £36 with dogs. its now 40 without and £63 with. at that point i feel i should just lump out the £100 for the trent one :(
The prices are crazy
Pity about the £43 delivery charge for the jig!
Jesus, that music, can't bear it.
Unfortunately I can't please everyone 😥
Great music fits the channel perfectly
@@jigsey. hehe thanks mate 👍
Great video, very useful
I've been looking at ideas for a mitre saw flip "station" combined with mft type dog holes and this is the first combination I've found. So a few years on how are you finding have a fixed mitre saw compared to the option of being able to move it to accommodate longer lengths of wood? Another option I could use is to just site the mitre saw on top of a mft type bench but use mini support blocks you can quickly clamp to your bench as here ruclips.net/video/KTFDeLoEP0g/видео.html . So I have tight space in shed so trying to work out what direction to go in. I also have the rage 5s so with the sledge I can use that for larger lumps of wood.
For longer boards that would not fit the the workbench as is I would just pull the workbench out (as it is on casters) to the middle of my workbench. However to be honest that happened twice so not a big deal for me. Here is an updated video on this workbench and my thoughts on it after few years of usage - ruclips.net/video/8G3CVHHSF-U/видео.html
It would probably be quicker and easier to use a Speed Bore / large drill to remove (say) half the waste first, then clean up each hole with the router. And the price of that jig is an absolute rip-off.
Hmm I think this went quite quick. But if there is an improvement of this process that will work for you then why not. For the same price you can get a ready MFT table top however when it gets damaged and it will over time, you will have to buy another one. But if you buy the jig then you can make the dog holes in any material, in any shape and configuration. So if you are looking at this from a longer perspective the jig offers a bit more I think. (and no I'm not affiliated nor been paid from the maker of the jig, which I bought for my own money)
You should get a cut out of it. Thanks again.
Hehe I wish 😁
Casual DIY 😟😟
I really wanted one of these jigs and so contacted the manufacturer.
They were not at all approachable or helpful - apparently having retired to France makes me an unwanted customer.
Well that's a shame
You've had that idea from the small shed so it's not your idea
No you are right MFT table top is not my idea it's been out for years mate👍 never said I came up with MFT solution. And I got no idea what the small shed is. Other than that have a great day👍
Who said anything about the mft table top I didn't the bench dogs you've made are from the small shed video which he put out 2 weeks ago
@@monty3862able well you didn't really say what you meant in the first place unfortunately. And the bench dogs I had in this video were bought from www.benchdogs.co.uk if you would like I can send you a receive 👍 could you send me a link to the video you stated as I'm intrigued.
On top of your comment there is a bit of a problem. If that chap posted that that two weeks ago I still was before him. I pre record my videos and got videos scheduled between 4 - 6 weeks in advance 👍 and I'm pretty sure I can find sold here the date I uploaded this video to RUclips and send you a screen shot if needed👍
"So basically"...a bit boring.
Sorry it's a video about making holes in a worktop.... not Fast and Furious 9 and yes I do repeat myself a lot😂🤣
@@CasualDIY I'd rather watch this than fast and furious 9 ha! Looking at this jig for my workshop. I've got the 1st version of the part guide system, but this seems like a lot less 'kerfuffle' 😆
@@craigcoe2804 hehe thanks 👍😁 it's a good solid jig and easy to use
