A very clever product and I use 50mm PVC pipe on our 50 fruit trees and I put them in the ground before planting the seedling.

How do you prevent the device filling up with roots and quit working?

Good question. Honestly not sure if that would happen. Guessing that roots wound stay in the soil, around/in the plastic, but not grow into the air/void. Perhaps the device could be wrapped in filter fabric.

I was going to ask this same question. Getting some large expensive palms installed later this week and was looking for solutions.
I had looked at another solution that also had open areas like this. I thought about taking a very good quality landscape fabric and wrapping it around a couple times. Then using the really large, high strength zip ties that air conditioning installers use to hang duct work in attics, seal off the top, bottom, and a few spots in between to keep the fabric from having gaps. I would say the more zip ties the better because the roots WILL FIND THEIR WAY through even an open area in the wrapped landscape fabric. I know this is true because I put landscape fabric in the bottom of my outdoor pots to keep dirt from washing out. I cut it precisely and put dirt on first and pack it down so there are no gaps. I still get some small roots finding their way inder the fabric and out the bottom of the pot.
The roots ABSOLUTELY WILL grow into this. You would think they will stay in the dirt and that the air space inside this device wouldnt be appealing to trees. But I have watched more than my fair share of videos of plumbers clearing drainage pipes of roots. The tree can sent out roots that harden off a little and can be fine in the open air. It will fill the space in very short order.

@@toddfromflorida This is certainly a possibility. Roots like to go everywhere. However, unlike an irrigation pipe, or drip pipes, what could be damaged by root intrusion? If roots were to intrude, or even fill the cylinder, I'm curious if this would actually be a problem. I suppose time will tell.

@@Andy_Humphrey it may not be an issue at all. Only thing I can guess that could be an issue would be if it filled with roots, there would be less room for water in the tube and it could pour out the top defeating the deep watering strategy. But maybe not.

what kind of plastic is this made of? Is it food grade plastic, no BPA? How does it break down into the soil compared to PVC pipe?

Wow, great question, love the details. Personally I have no idea, you might consider contacting ROBERT the founder of the company. All I know is they are made in California.

I like the looks of this product. I am not impressed with the industry standard regardless of who makes the product.
