    If people cared half as much to what they are shooting instead of what they are shooting on, Maybe we would see more quality work from people using any of these cameras. No one in the general public is going to ever say, "that movie sucked, if they would have shot on a different camera it would have been amazing"

      Not really, canon cameras especially for photography does not cost significantly more than any other cameras for the same performance, whereas Apple products' performance is significantly lower than that of custom built PCs yet it is still more expensive

    RED has better audio, better framerates "at lower resolutions" and better build quality but if you don't need it, then why the hell would you buy it. God, for the price of a RED rental you can buy a BMPC.

    The fact that the BMPC is even comparable in quality to the RED is a huge endorsement, forget about even arguing if the tests were biased or anything like that. For an indie film maker on a budget, it appears you'd be much better off getting the black magic and putting the money you save on other gear.
    Thanks so much for this video.

    This review really pushed me over the fence toward Black Magic. I have been following this company for a long time but I had sooo much money already tied up in Canon glass and gear. However, I was considering several cameras as a upgrade for better image quality from the 5D3. I looked at these, Canon C100, Sony A7s, Panasonic GH4, even the B.M. Ursa. I am ready to go completely 4K(All the PC specs, two 4K monitors, Recorders, etc.), just missing a actual 4K camera! Lol. Seeing this video has made me realize that pound for pound, the Black Magic is the best solution in terms of cost, size and weight, and will fit seamlessly into all the Glass and storage I already own. Great job man! BTW... I knew Camera "A" was the B.M.

    Crazy quality in this video Corey! In my opinion the RED Scarlet totally wins in term of "pro colors"... I'm not saying that the Black Magic returned bad results, totally the opposite, but I think it's some steps behind the Red :)

Since I don't have any particular preference I knew immediately that the black magic was camera A based off of his previous tests, it's color is just brilliant. • @theAndrewkin

    Not really sure how you came to the conclusion that the BMPC has more dynamic range than the Scarlet... BMPC is rated at 12 stops of dynamic range and the Scarlet has 13.5. Also, just looking at the images that came out I can see the leaves clipping to white on the production camera while the Scarlet retains that information. Both are great cameras and I hope to use both some day, but I just respectfully disagree with just that one comment :)

    • @theAndrewkin
      @theAndrewkin 9 лет назад +1

      I really like the lack of rolling shutter on the BMPC. That is glorious.

    • @Faymusmedia
      @Faymusmedia  9 лет назад +1

      The 2014 shelby gt500 is rated & 200 mph top speed. It will never see that. Never. It requires a 3 mile flat road. Just like the claimed dynamic range of each camera. My tests are real world. Look at the sky. Bmpc is blue and scarlet has slight blowout. Shadows are cleaner on bmpc. Hence more dynamic range.

    • @theAndrewkin
      @theAndrewkin 9 лет назад +1

      Faymusmedia Cars don't work the same as camera especially with dynamic range, but fair enough; however, your tests were clearly done at different times of the day, judging by where the shadows are. I can't honestly tell where the sun is, but it looks lower in the Red tests and thus closer to the frame and making the sky brighter. There is also definitely more highlight retention within the leaves in the Red shot than in the BMPC.

    • @Faymusmedia
      @Faymusmedia  9 лет назад +2

      I can tell you they were shot less than 10 minutes apart. I have used them both extensively. No point at grabbing at straws. It surely proves how great the bmpc is when we are pinpointing minute differences when the red is 6-8x the cost of the bmpc.

    • @theAndrewkin
      @theAndrewkin 9 лет назад

      Oh no doubt! It's an amazing camera especially given the price. By no means am I bashing on Blackmagic--the original Cinema camera is my next upgrade. I love Red and I love Blackmagic, it's just that you are literally the only person I have ever heard say that the BMPC has more dynamic range than the Scarlet, a claim I find highly subjective.
      That's honestly the only fault I can really find with your video, I actually really liked it overall. It's awesome to see just how well a $3k camera stacks up against the Scarlet, which is easily a $20k investment for a minimum rig.

    Black magic knows their stuff! When I got my Pocket Camera I thought it would be a while before I use it to film a wedding because the space usage compared to the 70D I usually use to film. I was wrong. The Pocket Camera blew me away on the smaller projects, it was so sharp for 1080p and small enough to carry with no issues. I decided to go all out on the accessories and film my next wedding on the Pocket Camera. I have no regrets!

  • @joepeffer5115

    Before seeing the release I would think the Red is Camera B perhaps, mostly because the BM always seems more HDR like and has contrast gradation from dark to light.

  • @henrym8401

    I’m new to video/photo but a quick learner; Incase a newbie like me comes along to watch this video, I would go for the production camera. The camera is cheaper now, and very good for newbies. I would jump on this bmpc before jumping on a higher end camera. I love both Blackmagic and Red, but if you are on a budget and learning; then Blackmagic Design is the way to go.

    I've owned both a Scarlet & BMPC in the past, and the Scarlet definitely had better dynamic range (and the BMPC was extremely lousy in low light). The BMPC battery never came close to an hour & 30 mins. Also, why wouldn't you mention the nightmare & cost of post with BMPC CDNG raw? Redcode is a significantly more efficient codec and keeps time & cost of post way down vs. BMPC. I think the BMPC is a better bang for your buck ONLY during production. If the footage is being handed off, it's negligible, but if you're doing your own post, the Scarlet is a much better value in the long term (and not quite as expensive as you mention...you're going off of outdated prices & the overpriced Red Pro monitor isn't a requirement).

    • @ryanlightbourn
      @ryanlightbourn 9 лет назад +3

      There's also strange horizontal ghosting lines when shooting highlights beside shadows on the BMPC (possibly a CMOS issue)...never saw that with Scarlet.
      Again, I have no bias, because the Blackmagic 2.5K & Pocket are two of my all time favorite cameras, but the BMPC was a major disappointment to me coming from Red One, Scarlet, & BMCC.

      ***** Thanks for the insight. It definitely was a disappointing flaw of the BMPC and one of the main reasons I sold mine quickly. It popped up on practically all low light shoots, was unavoidable, and ruined many shots. I saw it on the BMCC too, but not as frequently.

  • @aholder4471

    I knew Camera B was the red instantly. Even though the production camera is winning on every level, there is something about the color science of the red, that when the conditions are right, makes an almost 3d effect that is very cinematic. But I'm a total BMD fanboy and am thankful that they are making great products that are in the reach of the rest of us. The only way I would be able to shoot on a RED is if it paid for itself. And that ain't happening any time soon.

  • @moviegroovie3685
    @moviegroovie3685 8 лет назад

    There is a very important thing concerning the sharpness. BMPC do not have LPF filter while Red does. That means Red is less sharp but do not suffer from alliasing. That a cheap and simple trick.
    And regarding the test, I don't know. Have seen many test showing Red Mysterium-X had better dynamic range than even BMCC, which seems to perform better in this field than BMPC so probably it is always the case how you use the camera.

  • @ZakarooNetwork
    @ZakarooNetwork 8 лет назад +1

    I guessed correct. let me tell you how I new. Red reminds me of Euro TV shot in PAL, I feel it has a plastic sheen and slippery shutter to it. Blackmagic is so close to Film, I love Blackmagic. However Reds new Dragon sensor with Highlight edge rollover feature could be awesome. But there is just something about Reds Shutter technology that is off. Coming from Real Film editing background. Im Getting the BMUM 4.6k just to shoot in 2k RAW. All thanks to your great reviews. ;)

    I thought A Black Magic, B Red... I thought I've seen just slightly more details on RED shot (B), but I wasn't worry because definitely you can't tell the difference both images just as good

  • @NathanBLawrence
    @NathanBLawrence 9 лет назад +4

    It's worth noting that a lot of the things you're attributing to sharpness are actually issues of highlight rolloff and contrast curve. The image that comes out of the Red out of the box is intentionally unsharp, while even in the "raw" mode, the Blackmagic appears to be adding sharpening. For most use, this doesn't matter, but it's my opinion that sharpness as a measure is generally overrated, especially since 35mm stock was never as sharp as either of these.
    The way the Red renders tones also lets you "overexpose" (not really overexposing, since you still have the data) shots in low light, buying you at least a stop and sometimes more of improved noise performance in low light. This is not something that works on the BMPC, but again, you get better performance out of the box without having spent hours experimenting with this.
    In terms of the A/B test, I would say that B is obviously the Red, again because of the highlight rolloff. It just feels much more natural and preserves details in highlights the way film would as opposed to prioritizing shadow detail the way most digital cameras do.
    10 grand is obviously a colossal premium to pay for a camera that doesn't really have quantifiable advantages over the Blackmagic, but it's the same sort of premium for others that buy the Alexa over even the Red. It may seem like a lot of money to spend on a camera that does less, but the truth is that when you get to this price range, the cameras aren't just about the computer chips anymore; they're about the unique quirks of rendition that a given manufacturer brings to the table, and those quirks are what sell the cameras.
    At the end of the day, it's still about bringing the right camera for the right job (which could be either), and that's something you can't see on a chart.

  • @Rogeramirez
    @Rogeramirez 9 лет назад

    I've tried the BMC and in my opinion you get what you pay for.
    Pros: Cheap, 4K, Low Weight, High Definition, Global Shutter.
    Cons: Latitude, Electronic Noise, Sensitivity, Weird Menu, Internal issues due overheating.
    So, in my opinion if you wanna have 4K for a low price, it's ok, but don't lie to yourself hoping for a beautiful image. If you like 4K and a lot of electronic noise, over-saturated and unreal colors, 160 ISO as native ISO (400 is a lie), and overheating, this camera is for you. You will sell your 4K image and its high definition, no doubt about it, but cinema look is a lot more than image size and a low weight camera.

    Awesome, comprehensive comparison. Thank you!
    To me camera A looks sharper and cleaner but camera b is the look i would associate as more filmic. Reminds me of a DuArt seminar I went to years ago comparing super 16 to 16, and the results were that super 16 was so much better but the films they chose to show revealed 16 mm to "look" better. This, of course, was not about the technical side but the aesthetic choices made. So if I had the budget based on your great tests I would choose Scarlet, but given reality know that BMD camera is fantastic. And we don't show out films in side by side comparisons.

    I do think that the A is the Black Magic because it looks sharper and I like the image better (therefor hopping that it is the A) but I can see that the B cam has a green cast over it so it's not as well graded.
    You did mentioned that it was harder to do so.
    I would have liked to see how the RED reacted to sharpening. Just like the 5d being smooth but reacting very well to post sharpening.
    Anyway thanks for sharing
    I have now read that the camera A is the BMPC and I think that you spend more time grading it cause obviously you like it. But I'm also glad that it turned out to be the BMPC cause yeah it looked better

    As someone who used and owned both cameras, disagree on most points.
    This video is so biased and trying so hard to justify someones investment in cheaper gear vs more expensive gear, it looks like paid advertisement.
    Sorry guys, the BMPC is not a magical solution to all your problems, it's a great camera for the price but don't believe everything you see on the internet.
    I could just as easily set up a comparition between these two cameras and obtain opposite results in most aspects.
    Don't let yourselves be fooled by fanboys, RED, BMC or otherwise.
    Stick to being "camera-agnostic".
    Just some friendly advice.

      That damage control wont work. i'm not falling into that logic of yours where, Expensive = Better; no questions asked.
      that's silly.

      BijouCinema And wherever do I claim that? That's the farthest thing from my point. Maybe you misread? No offence intended.

    • @BijouCinema
      @BijouCinema 9 лет назад +9

      Raphael Wood You never stated it but from your words, you are implying it. You're trying to comfort those, who spent a fortune on a Red camera, even though this video clearly shows that there is little difference in image quality, between the cameras. Hence the term - Damage control.

    • @Beyond2Horizon
      @Beyond2Horizon 9 лет назад +1

      I think you missed my point of being camera agnostic and giving up on "camera wars" but no matter, in fact what you say of me, is true of the original poster, that being the problem.
      Good talking to ya.

      Raphael Wood it's obviously biased lol, if you read the video description it's got links to buy black magic gear, using those links help his channel.

    The BM 4k is wrongly said to be no good in low light but that is not the case, you must have fast cine lenses like the samyang t1.5 50mm, and the difference is night and day.

    Fantastic test! Best I have seen. Sharpness has been the name of the game in HD but that can hurt the look of a "film." 'The God Father' is not a "sharp" movie. Maybe "Captain America" is (but who saw that film?...). Bottom line is story telling, acting, lighting, production value when it comes to movies. What you stick in front of the lens...But for corporate shooting, commercial, interviews, and price BMC wins hands down. And one can shoot an epic on it and still afford lunch for the crew.

    Simple answer:
    If you want to shoot cinematic RUclips videos get the Blackmagic.
    If you want to get into professional cinematography get the RED.

    Thanks for taking all that time. I'm borrowing a BMC 4k to test for some aerials. The only thing I wish it could do is a higher frame rate for some slow motion. I can't really complain with the cost. Even 1080 60p would be a nice benefit. Great comparison.

    The camera A is technically better, but emotionally the B draws me in like it's more cinematic. It has a feel good vibe to it, cannot explain why since I know nothing about video :D I just can say what feels good :D

      +Arvin Peopleinlove Post production can move an image toward a more filmlike look. Also filters can aid in that look. I'd rather have the choice of a clearer image to work with. I favoured camera A.

      Scott Preston It's not about the looks, it's about the feel :D Most of people would never notice the look but they would notice the feel :) ... just like in music.

    Great Review. i definitely spotted the Red as Camera B due to the low light capabilities. i have to say as a colorist I prefer the filmic rolloff of the Red far better than the BMPC. But I think the BMPCC would be of far better use for a multitude of varying productions. way too sharp for me.

    Me like this Review, now I know what to buy, this video has proven that the Red one is just an over priced canon 5d with a metal body plus some extra features, camera A is the BMC

  • @juliansegovia2797

    So which camera was what? In the comparison of the vehicles I thought Camera A slightly edged out Camera B. It captured the detail of the rims and gloss of the vehicles beautifully which made for an awesome cinematic product. I am definitely getting the BMPC first because of its affordability and would put me in the game sooner. Would definitely also like to work my way up to a Sony Red. Great video btw.
