Philip is nasty on guitar. Loud fendery tone and intensity of SRV, and fuzzes it out like Hendrix. Puts it all together and then gives it a steroid injection. Monster player, and always seems very humble when interviewed. Appears to almost go out of his way to be polite and attentive to anyone who talks to him. I Wish him as much success as he wants!
Philip is by far one of the greatest blues players around, one of my personal favorites and biggest influences. Having a tone or playing style to SRV is a compliment, the best one you can get. If there's someone who doesn't understand that, either jealous or just close minded. This is called keeping the flame and I personally don't want Stevie's legacy to be lost especially when Kanye Wests and Justin Beibers rule the music business today.... Just think about it.
***** I've never known a guitarist who isn't a bit emulation and a bit their own. I've listened to a whole lot of Philip's playing and I can hear SRV's influence but not necessarily more than I hear Albert Collins, Freddie King, or Hendrix influence. I find Philip's playing to be extremely unique and…if you find it boring then who on earth do you find exciting?
Tommy Katona Keeping the flame? You don't need copy cats and emulators to keep the flame burning because great music will sustain forever and will never be forgotten.
I saw Phillip when he was with Jeff Healey at Hampton Beach Casino in the mid 90's and he was amazing on both guitar and vocals. We actually ran into the whole band hanging out in the parking lot after the show and we spoke with Jeff, Joe and Tom for a while and then Phillip came out and he was truly a regular guy. He actually apologized to me when he got distracted by another fan during our conversation. I have always remembered that. Very talented guy who truly respects his fans.
if you look closely(i also read this somewhere), he is only running the tuner of the one spot, the rest is running on batteries, except the Mega vibe, which has its own power supply(because it doesn't run at 9v), and the Ep3 delay which has it's own power supply. that's why his rig is so quiet with all those pedals. Some people(Eric Johnson fx.) even prefers the sound of some pedals using Batteries instead of power supplies.
@Gvecchi cool, wasn't trying to sound like I was taking a shot at you because I wasn't. Philip just rocks the World... Great man, who takes pride in his fans and has always made time to reply back when I have had questions or comments. God Bless and long live the Blues and Strat player's!
Great stuff man!! Thats the closest to Stevie's tone Ive ever heard!! So many mimic him, but who will ever replace him. Its been 20 years and no one have ever stepped up. SRV was one of a kind.
@chooseyourblues i think both are great in there way. Never saw Philip Sayce live but it saw Bonamassa and it blew my mind. Would love to see Philip Sayce he is insane!
thank you, i thought i was the only guy who didnt have 1,heis the only guitar player to admit to using effects , usually i pretty much plug straight in ,and everybody will chime in its all in the fingers,,, all great players have great boards , its an art to putting 1 together and 10 hours a aday practice u sound like a natural ...never had lesson i just woke up 1 day and sounded like srv
@Cedric - I'm pretty sure he's just muting select strings to keep them form going into feedback so that the feedback he's wanting/anticipating is isolated to that bent note that he's holding.
He was at the top of his game here . He looks like a model and fashion guy , with, the best wah tone , and tones in general. He looks like the sleeper pick, the guy that looks like he is sleeping with some super model , and looks like he is a gym, fashion guy, then unloads legit playing and tone , leaving you thinking , wtf just happened from the Calvin Klein model?
Yeah true. Peak Sayce here. He looks a bit washed out and ragged now...in a guitar god way!!! But here...blimey. He had the looks to slay before he even picked a note. Mayer wishes he looked and sounded this good.
@Gvecchi Not only in this video. If you check other videos of him you'll notice that he has the classical SRV kinda clean/crunchy sound. But I like it. I like his SRV aproach, but at the same time he has his own voice. He's more rock oriented. In fact some times he plays hard rock. SRV was criticized at the beginning 'cause of the same reason. People used to say that he was a Hendrix clone, but years later time put him on the right place.
Cranking a silverface Super Reverb full of JBLs, with a Strat? Nasty, ballsy and bright as hell. Most guys would sound paper thin through a rig like his, but damn does Phillip rip it apart!
FunknRoll95 I agree. I think people are quick to dismiss certain speakers and amps for being "too bright" sounding and seem to forget what the knobs on their guitar and amp are for.
@billyclay2 it wasn't just the srv references. i believe joe had a gold strat and came to fender with an idea for a sig model based on it, they rejected his idea and then a couple of months later fender came out with a gold strat that was very similar to Joe's.
@Gvecchi He's not an SRV clone. He has things of SRV, Hendrix, Clapton, Kravitz... and he sings really well. SRV was a Hendrix/King "clone". Time will put Sayce in the right place.
Let's don't bend Philip outta shape like we did with Joe B... Though I think he's way more a Strat guy than Joe wanted to be... I've never really understood why Joe completely gave up his Strats outta comments that he sounded so much like SRV... To me there's really no comparison other than they get everything from their influences which happen to be somewhat the same... They are all definitely monsters in their own right!
@aektzis91 Idefinately see your point, but for my ears thats more SRV. To me Hendrix was more of a marshall tone, not that real fender amp/ Leslie combo tone like is apparent here. You are right tho, very Hendrix - SRV did borrow heavily from Jimi in his licks and phrazing. This guy is a great player very tasty, I dont think I said that in my original comment.
I've watched this probably three or four times, and I just now noticed he has a OneSpot... He's powering thousands of dollars worth of pedals w/ a OneSpot o.0 Hm.
Huh, I have my OCD powered by an 18v wall wart (Dunlop), and that power supply is the noisiest thing in my rig:S The tuner, wah, chorus, and tremolo powered by the Godlyke Power-All aren't nearly as bad. The EP Booster running off the same model Dunlop wall wart isn't as bad either. Weirdness. I gotta just suck it up and get a Pedal Power one of these days...
@Gvecchi Yeah, I've listened to Freischlader, Matt Schofield, Mike Landau, Robben Ford, John Mayer... etc. All of them have a great tone, wich is what I like most. I like the 1st and 2nd albums of KWS, but after those I got a little bit tired of his SRV/Hendrix wannabe thing.
@voodootele this guy is much more comparable to Hendrix than SRV. you only have to listen to the licks he is playing, but also take a good look at his gear. Echoplex, wah, fuzz face, octavia, vibe pedal just all scream hendrix!
Pratice pratice, Nobody is a natural at the beginning, Even jimi said to think he would be a guitar player at first was almost unthinkable!! Pratice pratice Pratice!!!!!!!
Jeez, I never until now realised how long his fingers are, I've been playing for years but my fingers are much shorter. I can play fine but reach some of the stret ches Philip gets. Fair Play
AvesomeUK Yep short fingers here too + narrow palm width, just gotta work with what the good Lord gave ya, and if that don't work there are always short scale guitars like the Jackson Minions and Fender Duo-Sonics, etc. 😁
...hahaha! He certainly ain't no Stevie, Jimi or Slash when it comes to choice of headwear, but what do you do when all the cool headwear has been taken by others, and you don't want to be a copycat? Can't wait till he wears a Robin Hood number, complete with feather!

To me he sounds like srv and Gary Moore blended
Attaboy! Way to go Philip Sayce!
@@joshmuz9018 not really Gary imo

PREACH!!!!
I agree with you. But guitar has always been about finding your own sound. He's just emulating. Kinda boring no?
Tommy Katona I just discovered Philip and your right, he is a bad ass guitar player with brutal tone and attitude. Lovin' it!
***** I've never known a guitarist who isn't a bit emulation and a bit their own. Great video. He seems like a very humble, nice guy... down to earth. I am definitely a fan of his after seeing this.
Totally here after the reference in that pedal show, great player!
+James Yates Hey man, in which episode do they talk about Sayce?
+godheadv I think it's the echo plex episode or one of the most recent ones. Mick mentioned this interview. He filmed this
My absolute favorite guitar player
His tone is always on point 👌😍
amazing generation of guitarists....let’s all say “grateful” together! keep the flame burning!
I know, can never get enough of it, pure perfection.
Philip is an amazing player and a really nice guy.
Still one of the best rigrundowns ever ✌🏼
I love the way he embraces his guitar-geekness
Hendrix would be proud.

I really like this guys style.
i love sometimes just sitting here soaking up more other people's guitars stuff~
i think it sounds great!
He looks like a tubescreamer in that outfit. Amazing player though.
yess indeed !!!!
he is atucaly a "joyo vintage overdrive "
most underrated comment ever
Great stuff man!! Thats the closest to Stevie's tone Ive ever heard!! So many mimic him, but who will ever replace him. Its been 20 years and no one have ever stepped up. SRV was one of a kind.
His vibrato man I swearr
This guy is incredible !!!
John Mayer is more like a "bluesy/pop" artist. Phil is a pur rock musician!! Love that guy with so much energy.
You can hear his new song Once at 4:04
Man. I love that song. Hit me hard on a personal level. Like great music should. He obviously was sitting on it for something special.
one of the best left hand vibrato
I love philip's beastie boy's track jacket :)
I love how by 2024 all the paint on that guitar is long gone
Just found out about this guy from Andertons sounds like video lol this guy is amazing!
JonesHvac that's how I heard about him too
his vibrato is fantatic
wish this guy would give a thorough lesson on his picking techniques- his right hand is what i find most impressive.
WHO NEEDS A NEW GUITAR RIGHT? NOT THIS MAN, HE SOUNDS BRILLIANT
My face is melted... Damn!
a super guitar player.. another " Jeff Healey " natural gifted player .. awesome dude .. keep on Rockingggggggggg SwB
Has a very gentle nature about him, and plays that Strat like it's a third hand ...
Holy crap, that's a Silverface Super Reverb. Buy 'em up now people.
I love this man
Wow I think my face just melted off 😵
philp has one of the sweetest bend ever
@chooseyourblues i think both are great in there way. Never saw Philip Sayce live but it saw Bonamassa and it blew my mind. Would love to see Philip Sayce he is insane!
Great stuff. Would love to have heard about his guitar and volume settings on it and the amp.

Beast!
Philip has taken on a real clean cut look, and I really like it. He is looking more professional like Joe Bonamassa.
Very cool, that Leslie is wonderful! And your playing is so natural. Sounds like a film can inductor in the wah? Or early halo? Any thoughts?
Always helps to have a vintage strat !!!!!!
Man his playing has evolved quite a bit over the last 13 years
He mastered the guitar by watching Yousician ads.
Darryld1 haha yes
What
BRING IT!!

Philip man if you read this dude you are just the greatest I’m glad you chose to play because there’s nothing better
What a guy.

this guy has some chops!

FunknRoll95 I agree. I think people are quick to dismiss certain speakers and amps for being "too bright" sounding and seem to forget what the knobs on their guitar and amp are for.
Not a SRV clone at all... just one of the best blues-rock player of the moment.
That Diaz fuzz sounds HUGE
I wonder if the Fender 2x12 is backwards because the amps are out of phase
prscustom2112 Because 2x12 Ev speakers cranked are loud as hell.
What are the other cabs and amp back there along with the Super?
@Gvecchi SRV clone??? You said that just because you only know SRV.
@billyclay2 it wasn't just the srv references. i believe joe had a gold strat and came to fender with an idea for a sig model based on it, they rejected his idea and then a couple of months later fender came out with a gold strat that was very similar to Joe's.
@fenixlespaulcustom That`s right you can see the aluminium domes of the speakers through the grill.
Nice rig. I want it!
Eff me. Just found out about this guy and he is a monster.
@Gvecchi He's not an SRV clone. He has things of SRV, Hendrix, Clapton, Kravitz... and he sings really well. SRV was a Hendrix/King "clone". Time will put Sayce in the right place.
HAIL FROM BRAZIL !!!
I folowed Phil on youtube as an amateur musician. It's so nice to see him developing into the next John Mayer kinda artist.
what is the small brown head and cab brand??
Its built by a guy named tommy cougar and is called a mother amp, he talks about it in a other video
@Gvecchi If you have a strat, super reverb and a tube screamer, and you play blues/rock... obviously you're gonna sound very close to SRV.
I have a 71 Echoplex ep-3, 80's ts-9 and 70's Thomas Conn Crybaby. I want Phillips jacket instead haha! I'll take the Klon too!
That wood speaker cab in the back left is interesting i would like to know more about that thing
i’ve been looking, have you found anything?
@@Pragtical nope
Did he scallop his frets?
what about the Fender Vibratone behind , on top ???
lol I wonder how loud it was in that room

Why Twin Reverb?
does somebody knows the model of his shoes?
fan-fucking-tastic!
this guys has done his Hendrix studying......like the wah into fuzz
7:46 what did he do?? cool toneee

Sweet mercy
Why does he use a tremolo pedal at 1:54??? He´s got a Super Reverb! Just use the footswitch!
He most likely pulls V1 and V5 in order to get a bigger tone. That’s what stevie always did in his fenders.
I've watched this probably three or four times, and I just now noticed he has a OneSpot... He's powering thousands of dollars worth of pedals w/ a OneSpot o.0 Hm.
@yobhsiFehT i discovered him in 2004 when he was touring w/ Melissa Etheridge as her guitar player

great guy ! Cool player !...but why is his sound so óver the top ?
Looks like the audio guy wasn't quite prepared for 110db...
Why have I never heard of this guy before?!? =|
4:02 Nice real Nice.
kinda swimmin around in there..fantastiche..zuber!
That SRV clone stupidity is why Joe Bonamassa switched to Les Pauls.
Big Ron
Its a super
This guy has a passion for wearing the worst hats ever made consistently and he isn't even bald
