    The cool thing about Josh’s relationship with Susan is that she brought out the potential adult in him, but he got her back in touch with the young girl she used to be. That’s how she was able to loosen up and have fun. When she says something to him about not wanting to re-live those years, even so, she realizes that he doesn’t have those memories of going through the teen years. And it’s necessary, in order to have a real adult life. Just a much better movie than anyone expected.

    I think a big important thing to realise is that it's only AFTER Tom Hanks and the girlfriend spend a night together that he starts acting more adult and starts living as if he WAS an adult. I always felt like there was something to that detail. He had an adult experience, and how or why he started acting more adult afterwards is up to how you wanna interpret it. I always thought that was really interesting and subtle.

  • @Tr0nzoid
    @Tr0nzoid Год назад +33

    Flash-forward to now, a lot of adult men have rooms that look like Josh's did, full of toys they bought as adults because they aren't really marketed to kids anymore.
    It's interesting how you pointed out the subject matter could be done too comedic or childish in another movie. "Big" came at the tail end of a trend of body-swapping movies. "Like Father, Like Son" and "Vice Versa" preceded it, along the lines of "Freaky Friday," but "Big" had a more heartfelt tone and without switching bodies with someone else. It was the "bigger" hit movie by far. From what I understand, the next most popular movie like that would be "13 Going On 30" a generation later.

He just wanted to be "bigger" and when he became "older" instead, he ran with it. He may still have had a 13 year old mind but he was a 30 year old man. When I watched this as a kid, I never thought about the implications of the relationship. I was seeing a kid grow into an adult and start living an adults life, which I thought was the coolest thing, as a kid. When I saw that he bought all that cool stuff for his apartment, I just wanted this for my life. Then I grew up....UHHHH. Keep them coming, guys.

    Tom Hanks is absolutely brilliant. He plays every character SO differently. He could’ve made Forrest like Josh (since this was before Gump). But he didn’t. There’s none of that. He’s the most believable 13 year old ever. He *was* 13. Like u said, he didn’t make it childish. He didn’t force the funny. But seeing a grown man become a 13 year old - u forget he’s an actor - u BELIEVE he’s 13, made a wish & literally grew up overnight. And yes, we *all* loved this movie when it came out. My group saw it 3 times the 1st week. I’ll love Tom Hanks forever for all the characters he’s given us over the years. Genius🖖

    Tom Hanks character is showing the immaturity of a 12-year-old while being an adult but also showing all the things you enjoyed as a child you quit doing as an adult adults could still do but we're too busy with life work family Etc

    There are a number of body swap type films that came out after this with different variations on the same theme but this was the original and the best. The piano in the toy shop is the stuff of Hollywood legend. I love this film by Hanks. Turner and Hooch is another great one you should check that out

    Funny thing is: I would have sworn on my life that this movie had a totally different ending and in the early days of the internet (~1998) loads of people agreed with me. In the end, we figured out that there's a movie with the same plot called "14 Going on 30" (not to be confused with the more modern "13 Going on 30" starring Jennifer Garner) that has the ending we remembered.

    Toy Story
    Turner and Hooch
    The Burbs
    The Money Pit
    These movies are all great.

    Such a classic.
    Who didn't want to be 'big' when we were children? So we could eat as much junk food as we wanted, play outside until WE wanted to go in, stay up late, have days off school & watch daytime TV like Supermarket Sweep & Diagnosis Murder (british 80s baby), stay at our friend's houses or fun relative's house every weekend, to be like Kevin McCallister every now & again especially when parents or siblings pi$$ed us off, etc.
    I prefer adulthood though.. if I can be my inner child too sometimes, like when watching nostalgic films like this.
    Or like Labyrinth (the baby crying & the storm at 7:05 reminded me of it lol).
