3D Printing allows a very rapid experience to be printed out in a plastic format that would give you a facsimile or a replica of what you're trying to build. Usually 3D printing is not used to make a full prototype or a sample of something. But it would give you a crude shape of its volume of how its feel on the hand. You can also make multiple points of parts and put them together to see how things would fit or know if there is a better way on how to assemble them. It is a cheap , quick way to put parts on your hand. It's cheaper to have them see in cutting the limitations that 3D printing is a bit crude, the tolerances are off, the material's surfaces are not smooth and requires additional finishing or sanding and the weights are off as well. And you would also see that there is no instructional integrity in plastics that you can have with a solid block of aluminum.
Some of the more high-end 3D printing now offers multiple materials, 3D printing in ceramics to metalics, plastic to stretchy & soft materials. So it's allowing the designers to 3D printup a number of pieces to get the shape of that product moving along before it goes to sampling or prototyping.
