i'm glad you posted a failure, especially with your background! bow drill is not easy but often portrayed as such. showing failures is help keeping it realistic. i've drilled a lot with willow (not sure about the exact species) but success rate is high. i definitely struggle with alder and have hit or miss with poplar. just saw your interview with paul kirtley, it was very interesting!
You may already know this but when I get coarse dust like that I start with slow speed and light pressure. Keep that up until the notch is filled with dust. Then you can pick up the speed and apply more pressure to get the heat needed to ignite the dust. Hopefully that helps.
From what I could see, everything was perfect, & it should have lit... except for one thing. Your dust notch wasn't full enough. Do everything exactly the same, but get that notch OVERFLOWING before you light it. The hot end of the drill should be buried into the dust. That's what lights it up. I don't believe it was too coarse. I think it wasn't full enough to reach the bottom of the drill.
Great video. Thanks
Thanks😊

Yes thats a great way to get your ember going and its the method I use the most I think👍😊 But in case it didn't work for me.
Blackberry/bramble string is great! Very easy to get long lengths to work with
Yes I agree👍
Nice tattoos, Mattias 🙂
Thanks mate😁
Perhaps the wood has become a little punky, was the Willow located in flood waters?
On the contrary, this wood was quit firm. I would have liked it to be softer😊
