  • The slow match also called Apache match, has been made of different materials by various indigenous people throughout the world. The purpose is that you can carry the embers with you so that you don't have to start a fire from scratch next time.
This one is made of dry juniper bark that´s been buffed up to finely shredded ball. Any similar bark can be used. When you have lit it It´s wise to look after it every hour or hour and a half. This juniper cigar went on for 11 hours.
    Hope you enjoy

The BIC lighter crowd asks, 'Why bother?' But we know why. Thanks Matthias. A useful skill to know.

Several skills well presented! The stone-on-stone spark executed well enough to ignite amadou was fantastic.

Well done Mattias. I have not seen this "cigar" before. I have seen a "modern" equivalent with a "rope" braided from fluffed up juniper. The rope is fed through a piece of steel pipe with similar dimensions. When you get to your new location you cut off the smoldering piece of rope to make a new fire a take care of the rest of the rope.

Do you boil the fungus layer in water and ashes?

@@mattiasnorberg I asked because I don't know anything about the process. I know a lot about wild edible mushrooms. I picked them for myself and sold them to restaurants. I have never tried making this but I would like to. I don't know how to identify the rocks that will spark. We don't have flint that I know of where I live in Maine, USA.

Tack så mycket😊 Den här har jag fått. Annars kan man hitta markasit/pyrit på vissa ställen längst den Danska kusten.
