90 days ago, I got my hands on the Amazon Kindle Scribe for the very first time, and I was not a fan. In my initial kindle scribe review video, I was pretty critical of the Scribe, calling it, largely, a disappointment and waste of money. However, in this video, we revisit some of the points I made in my first scribe review and discuss what, if anything, has changed since then!

It’s for sure a luxury, but I do really love the book sized screen. The only time I even consider using my paper white now (which I loved) is when I’m going somewhere. It’s become my portable kindle and the scribe is my at home device.
I agree, this would definitely be my use case when commuting on the subway. Would use my Paperwhite then and the Scribe at home.

I like the sticky notes. I gives me a lot more room to write honestly. I also like the scribe for its bigger screen size. I also have an oasis and paperwhite and they sit now. So I cannot say that it is not overpriced because the value outweighs the cost.
I just added a comment and I forgot to add that. The sticky notes gives more space and I can add the date of my comment so years later I can read my thoughts and know when I annotated them.

@@dylancanread 100% agree. I am not sure if people know about the ability to export your highlights and notes to your PC/Mac and have them there as well. It works quite well.
I, too, wanted to write on the page of Kindle books, but then I started to like the sticky notes. It's cleaner. Let me explain. I started to re-read a physical book I annotated and I got anxiety because the pages had colorful highlighted text and annotations on the margins. It was like a louder and crowded environment. You know what I'm saying? So I got to the conclusions that I liked the sticky notes in Kindle scribe more than I was expecting.
I have the Kindle Oasis too and I don't carry it w/o a purse or a backpack so when I started carrying the Kindle scribe I also put it in a purse or backpack. I do agree that is not as portable, but I enjoy the bigger screen. Specially for non fiction books.
This is a really good point! I know exactly what you mean, and I think the overcrowded/messy look is why I have never really annotated in books. I think it would be great to have both options on the scribe: on-page annotating and sticky notes.
And yes! There’s definitely a trade off between bulky-ness and the impressive screen size, but all in all I’m glad to have the large screen!
Hi, Dylan. It’s good to hear an update. Listening to this video, I was overwhelmed with the feeling that you just aren’t the target market for this device. (And frankly, I might not be either.) I say this because you aren’t using any of the Scribe-specific features. However, I wouldn’t be comparing Scribe with other Kindles. I would compare it with the Remarkable and other e-ink tablets. Then again, I’m interested in maybe getting one. So, sub folders sounds great to me. Choosing your line thickness for the aesthetics while writing also sounds good. So, it sounds like the Scribe had a worthwhile update to me!
Absolutely, David! I purchased the scribe, primarily, so that I could review it here on the channel from the perspective of a reader. With that in mind, I think there’s no denying I am not really the target audience for this product. However, I am still enjoying using it and think it will continue to me by go-to eReader for the foreseeable future! If you do decide to purchase a Scibe, I hope you enjoy it! 😁 And thanks for your thoughts, as always!

Great review. I love the size of my scribe, but you’re right, it’s hard to hold when reading if not at a desk or table. I take some notes with the pen, but wish it would underline and write on actual page.
I’m glad I’m not the only one! I do feel like writing directly on the page of a book will be an option at some point in the future, but of course that’s just a guess.
Didn’t understand the ‘why’ of this review - if you don’t take notes, the whole idea is irrelevant. This is a device for those who want an integrated read/write experience. If you are a deep tech eInk type, it falls short. If you are a ereader purist, there are more portable Kindles. My read is that Amazon wants to expand a very niche eInk market segment by introducing a simple set of software features with a fantastic writing experience. You never touched on the writing experience. Software upgrades are easier than improving hardware and this makes the category friendlier to kindle users accustomed to using a pure notepad for notes. If you have limited interest in taking handwritten notes the whole device and this review is moot.

Your review is fairly biased given you want an e-reader and you have no need for one of the biggest reason to buy a Scribe over most other Kindles and similar devices, the ability to write with the stylus. The update added three new pens (Fountain-Pen, Marker, Pencil). The Marker and Pencil are pressure and orientation sensitive giving you a lot more creative freedom in creating notes and notebooks. I have made a couple hundred pages of notes (both personal and for work) on my Scribe. As a note taking device it has been awesome and still gives me access to my Kindle library.
Absolutely! My review is definitely from the perspective of a reader rather than a note taker. The scribe is really fun to use and seems to be a good eInk device, but, like you said, it just isn’t a device I am taking full advantage of. I’m glad you’re enjoying your scribe! 😁 Sounds like it is perfect for what you need!
Agree! I never take notes in books or articles that I read, but I always highlight points which I want to find again quickly in the future. Highlighting and page linking would be most important to me

I just bought a Scribe 16GB with the Premium Pen for £160, that's only a little more than the reMarkable2 charge for the premium pen without the tablet! - that's crazy good value if you can get it on sale. I own the reMarkable2 as well but see myself using the Scribe for reading and journalling before sleep (as it has a backlight). So far I'm both impressed and frustrated by this device.
I'm impressed by the pen, it's fantastic, the 300ppi screen, the backlight with temperature adjustment, the magnetic sleep/wake, the responsiveness in PDFs, there's a lot to like. But the software is still so frustrating, no quick drawer, no easy landscape/portrait orientation change, can't put a PDF notebook under notebooks, it shows under library, can't duplicate/move/delete pages in PDFs, can't change templates between pages, no custom templates, no tagging, can't even access your annotated PDFs from any other device (argh!). I hope Amazon address this but I am not holding my breath as no meaningful updates for 5 months now...
Thanks for the update. I’m not even sure I’d like the large screen size. When I got my kobo Libra with the large screen one of the first things I did was to increase the margin size. That made the printed page a bit narrower which was easier for me to read at a glance, rather than scanning my eye across a wider reading area. Maybe my eyes have gotten lazy from ereading? When I read physical books it’s usually my textbooks, which have the narrow two column layout that’s easier on the eyes to read.
If I find someone who has a scribed I’ll give the wider screen a try. But I don’t mind having to turn a page every handful of seconds because the kobo page turn buttons rest under my thumb so I’m hardly aware I even press it. It’s like the page automatically turns for me.

I believe the scribe has a split screen / 2 page functionality now so that takes advantage of the high resolution screen and fit more text in.

For a college student, I think the Scribe might actually be the best option as it is one of the most affordable - if not the most affordable - options out there. I returned mine after a couple weeks, I just never reached for it. It was too big for me. Prefer my paperwhite & Oasis. I would like a 8 inch version Kindle.

Make sure you actually buy the book and support the authors, etc but 1 way to get around the annotation limitation is to get a PDF version somewhere like z library and then you can annotate straight over the text and in the margins to your heart's content :)
I didn't pony up for the Scribe. I own three current gen Paperwhites (two are Signature models) and have owned every Kindle since the white angular first-get (I even owned the DX). What is the overall best Kindle experience (reading, library browsing, etc) I have ever had? Apple iPad. 😃#truth

Why did you buy it if "for you" is garbage? Your review is almost than tendencious. Kindle scribe is high in price, the pen is unusable. If you read only, Kindle Scribe is not for you. You need to know how you can squeeze the juice. Scribe isn't expensive referent to other ebooks that allow taking notes, look up similar prices sure you don't find it. I have had more than 10 ebooks of all the brands from the beginning of the e-ink, and for the price and quality, this is worth it. Regards

One of the most biased reviews I ever seen. Yes. The device is far from perfect. However, this is anything but objective.
So basically the Scribe sucks, but you gladly use it above all else since you unfortunately bought one. I just bought one!!

i liked the video. here is the thing though my guy. i do not mean any offense saying this. why did you get the scribe when you did not intend to take any type of notes with it? Like... its in the name. the point of thing is notetaking within and out of reading. there is not much point in purchasing this without those features.
Haha fair enough! Primarily, I bought it for the larger screen size (and, to be completely honest, so I could talk about it on the channel), so my review is primarily for someone who is a reader first and a note taker second (as my channel is dedicated to books/reading).

I purchased the scribe and was so impressed with the material, look and feel of the device. Saying that I just returned it. 🙄 I'm like 57 and it is way to heavy for me to hold. I was so disappointed because I have been wanting a larger eReader but without the excessive weight. I hope the next Oasis will be a bit larger yet keep it comfortable.

I've got the signature and love it. I definitely think the scribe is overpriced. I would like to try out the large screen just to see if it really makes a difference for me, but again, that price is nuts.
For sure! I do like it now that I have it, but definitely unjustifiable at the current price if you don’t take a lot of notes.
It does go on sale every so often. Making it a little more affordable to purchase.
For half the price you get the Kindle Fire (tablet). With Adobe's PDF-Reader you kann write wherever you like and with the Kindle app you have the usual options. And you can add e.g. Libby to the same device and whatever other apps you like because it's a full Android tablet. Personally I don't see a single reason to buy or use the Scribe.
That’s a great point! Admittedly, I don’t know much about the kindle fire, but it sounds like a great device.
@@dylancanread : it has its flaws, it's an Amazon product after all. I got it in last year's Black Friday week at a reduced price. The main flaw is Amazon's attempt to cage it in the Amazon eco system so you have to do some research how to use Google Play Store additionally to Amazon's AppStore.
But basically it's a 10'' tablet driven by Android, so you can run all apps for Android, including the Kindle app.

I have had mine for a week and I really like it so far. Mostly for the screen size. I’m fine with the pen and note taking. I won’t be using it a lot because the pen reproduces my handwriting closely and my handwriting is chicken scratch on a good day. Couldn’t software make it more legible?
Haha sounds like we are one in the same! My handwriting is awful, which now that you mention it, might be one of the reasons I’ve never been big into note taking 😜

Really really wanted to get one of these when they were announced. Stocked up on Amazon cards to purchase then I found your channel. I so appreciate your no nonsense commentary. I’m holding off until the v2 or mass operating system upgrades. In the meantime, I upgraded my 2018 PW to a 2021 PW Signature and won’t look back for a while. Already on my 4th book of the year. I really want one but I like having the bump on the oasis. If they do that for 2nd Gen. scribe I’d be sold. Your comments on hand comfort are exactly what I feared.
That would be a great addition! It is not a very ergonomic device. Maybe the next iteration of the Scribe will include this!
Did you hate it? Well, I am kinda fond of this device. Pretty good option with its Mediatek chip and it has a huge battery backup as well.
It’s certainly grown on me!
I just got one of these and I'm still trying to decide if I made a mistake or not buying it, hah. My big justification was because I like to take notes when I read as it helps me to commit certain things to memory (I'm kinda dumb ngl), and before I would use either a computer or an iPad but it's annoying going back and forth, but taking notes on my Oasis sucks balls because the keyboard is ass (much prefer handwritten).
I'm not using it for all of my notes in general, but it's good specifically for all things book related.
I was hoping it would be a bit lighter, I thought the battery would be thinner/lighter since it doesn't need much battery to operate for long durations.
LOVE the screen though! Man, eInk is just so beautiful on a massive screen, and now my Oasis seems so tiny! I feel like I'm reading hard cover editions of books, which is just awesome. On my Oasis I was using a font a bit small for my liking because the next size up was too big for the screen, but now I can have that larger front and there's still tons of text on the screen. Love that.
All-in-all... I don't think the price is that bad, compared to similar devices. Other devices do run Android, but that wouldn't be very important for me. Especially since what I would want, is an eink note taker, that runs kindle very well. And... the kindle app on Android ereaders still isn't that great.
If I could afford a Scribe, it is allot more interesting to me, than when it first came out... especially since they seem to have a plan for more robust updates....seemingly.
I think it's actually a win for Amazon that you would recommend, since (based on some things said) you don't seem to be the target audience.
they released an update on Feb 27 that added fountain pen, marker and pencil; jumping to specific pages in notebooks; and new wallpapers exclusively for the Kindle Scribe that are really nice

Can you write directly onto a book or do you have to make it a sticky note? I just bought the pen for the kobo Sage and I can write directly onto the page. Kindle paper white can be slipped into pocket though. Sage is just a bit larger, more like the size of most paperback books.

Thanks for the great review. I feel exactly the same about the weight of this device. It's just not that comfortable to read with unless you set it on your lap or a desk. I'm not much of a note taker as well. Sooo, I've been cheating, and grabbing my Paperwhite. Hmmm, may be sending it back. It's too bad because I really wanted to like this thing!
Shoutout to Dylan who is the only one (that I’ve found so far) who is giving a review on the scribe who has familiarity with other kindles. Lol all I’ve been able to find out there are tech geeks who have never used a kindle in any format and describing some of the most basic features as “wins”. 😅
Electronic devices depreciate in price pretty quickly. So if you have the patience to wait a year or two, these will become fairly "cheap" soon. Also, based on the law of supply and demand, these things will only get cheaper. There's too much competition (supply) to support a very niche product (low demand). These devices are geared more towards note takers rather than e-book readers. $300+ is pretty steep to replace notebooks lol.
Great review and I agree with everything, I got a scribe about a week ago and so glad I got the basic, saved a bit of money there, I nearly did get the premium pen but changed my mind. I take a few notes and I do love the writing experience but I don’t take many so pen and paper would do for that 😊. But like you I find I read on it most of the time now, the size and screen are very impressive so my paper white is just when I’m out and about as the size is so much better for that and like you, I’ve bought the scribe so I might as well use it. Thanks for a great video, I’m just catching up on some of your other ones now too.

Fair enough. But, it’s hard to have an abundance of confidence in the half-inch thick fabric case currently offered by Amazon
I bought it and now Im waiting for another update. I kinda hate it and love it at the same time. I should have returned it when I could because now Im just waiting for the next update(thats not how you should enjoy your new device), there are clearly some bugs and problems they need to fix, but new features aswell. What really bothers me that they sell something with closed system and youre practically buying a genie in a bottle, nobody tells you the final features or anything, big promise in the air. Very dissapointed with amazon. I mean, its a big company.
@@darthkai8242 For school its great. I wanted a device like that, remarkable caught my eye, but then I looked for other newer devices with the ability to be better than RM2. The hardware is better in terms of hardware (should be faster, better display) design is comparable. I dont want much, but the whole note taking is very poorly incorporated at this moment. I dont need some sofisticated features, just what would you expect from note taking device.
