Just a suggestion for under the sink …don’t put paper products and don’t pack it so full…if you have a leak under your sink, it’s a lot harder to catch and see and then it can end up ruining all your paper products. Let’s just say…I learned this lesson the hard way.

I kid you not, right after I heard you mention to put the Tupperware with its lid I paused the video and went straight to work!! I ended up doing that, moved my kitchen items to make it more accessible and placed them with their category. Now to finish this video… 😊

Hi Margaret! Great video; I was so happy to see we do many of the same things in the kitchen. I only have 1 chef knife, 1 pot and 1 pan, 1 spatula, etc. I cook 90% of my + my husbands meals from home and can safely say I have NEVER needed more than 1 of the common kitchen gadgets. We are so use to excess - at least here in the US - so it's amazing to see someone sharing that you can live with less + it may actually improve and simplify your life ❤

I noticed your fire extinguisher under the sink. Kitchen fire extinguishers should be mounted on a wall between the source of fire, often a burning pan on the stove, and an exterior exit. In an emergency, everyone in the house, including visitors, should be able to know where the fire extinguisher is located. Kitchen fire extinguishers are often colored white instead of red. These fire extinguishers are optimized to extinguish grease and oil fires. Red ABS fire extinguishers will work, but not as well on kitchen fires.

I have to chuckle a bit at these videos. As a homeschooling, homesteading, mom of 6 that makes every meal from scratch, we have to have multiples of spatulas, knives, pots and pans, water bottles, cleaning products, etc. And yes, we are minimalists! (Maybe more essentialist then minimalist when it comes to the kitchen.) We can have 5 or 6 people in the kitchen doing the exact same thing and it would be foolish to not have them. Especially when one of our crops comes in and we have to all work together to freeze or can it. But, by and large, most people aren't us, so they should be able to follow this!

    • @juststeph6940

Yes that’s what I just wrote we are homesteaders and we have multiples of everything, many knives for many different reasons. But I always go through my stuff every canning season and I’m always surprised at what I can find to declutter. But yes most people aren’t us and growing most of their food and processing their own meat lol.

I was going to say, whoa it down a bit, because your situation sounds pretty unique to most. 6 kids in this day and age is not common, nor affordable for most people (or they'd be scraping by which isnt really smart). Nor is much else you mentioned. It is nice you're doing something meaningful to you, but to each their own. If 10 spatulas works for you, absolutely do that. There's probably other things you can get rid of. With 6 kids I'd be minimizing what I could too (not related to your kids items)

    • @viewerviewer

That's right. I mean, even myself not being a homesteader, I do make food at home from scratch most of the time and we do need several cooking utensils.

  • @jennylhenry78
    @jennylhenry78 Год назад +3

Okay so I have 3 spatulas. I probably use 2 each day. The 3rd one could probably go.
As for pans. I have a small pot, a medium pot, and a larger round bottom pot. I have a small pan and a large pan. And a stock pot. That's 6. I say we use all of them except maybe the medium pot. Nope, just remembered my husband uses that one for frying. So they all get used regularly.
Knives. We have a knife block and I use almost every single one of them. There's maybe 2 I don't use, but my husband does. And if I take those out then it looks weird with missing knives. 😆
I don't have any of thos apple corer, egg slicer, strawberry cutter, etc. 🙌🏻
I have a bathroom caddy with my cleaning supplies and it lives in the cupboard above my washer. I actually use Norwex and so I don't have a lot of sprays. Simple Green. Folex carpet spray. Bar Keepers Friend. Seventh Generation toilet bowl cleaner. I think that's it.
    My apices are pretty minimal.
Water bottles. We each have 1 water bottle. My husband has 2 that he takes and drinks both almost daily. We have 1 extra in case a child can't find there's. That's it!
No appliances on my counter either! I have our cutting board and knife block hiding beside the fridge. A plant and a small jar hiding behind it that I use for "odds&ends" that I find floating around (a screw or marble or who knows what little bobble from a child and so I just put it there until I figure out where I belongs), a vase with faux flowers on the other side, salt & pepper & butter jars. That's it. And I have 6 different counter spaces. 👍🏻
I have decided to call my junk drawer a utility drawer. It has 3 of those plastic organizers from the dollar store (normally for serving utensils) that fit exactly in there. The back one is for batteries and the charger, the middle one is for a pen, pencil, sharpie, box cutter, flashlight. And the front one is for toothpicks, Chapsticks, and a couple hair bands for my youngest's hair when she eats so it doesn't get food in it.

What’s your advice for sometimes things like birthday candles and stuff you use to spread Icing on a cake? Also I have extra dishes we don’t use but when people come over which is rare we do use them. They mostly sit there though would you let go of these ? I have a very small kitchen so space is tight 😅 always love you videos! Oh also you mentioned plastic is bad (which I do agree with you) but isn’t your epic water bottles plastic ? I think you need two knives, and you really need a sleeve to protect the edge of your knife. I have a chef's knife- 10" and a utility knife- 6", and a good sharpener to keep them both always ready. But I agree, you don't need separate knives for every single thing. Nor do you need slicer gadgets if you have a good knife.

Love the tips! Always a reminder to not only be minimal but also sustainable! I would love to have those pots and pans but I have ones that are just fine. My biggest struggle is to find a good chefs knife that lasts and a good can opener. One tip I also follow is do I use EVERYTHING in that cabinet? If not it’s got to go. Love you videos thank you for the ongoing motivation 💛

These tips are great and true if your just a regular mom, wife , single person. When it was just me and my husband I think I had less kitchen tools then you. But when you are a homesteader it’s comes with a lot of kitchen items, multiples of everything. So I think what could be added for the moms that are like me and running a homestead, growing our own food is if you have a spot in your basement or a separate closet something like that to store the multiples in and just keep the essentials in your kitchen for everyday use that will make things feel more calm and you will enjoy your space more. All my extras are in a food storage room downstairs and it makes things feel nice on the days we aren’t canning, processing meat, cleaning up the veggies from the garden. Also for the homesteaders take a good hard look at what you have chances are you bought a certain gadget you thought was going to make life easier and it didn’t always reassess what you have. I know I got rid of a juicer I haven’t used in 5 years, a tortilla press I just never think to grab, a food mill that just hurt my hand every time I used it and bought something better. Great video!

Phew! Junk drawers diff add stress for me! The more I declutter and organize (I have a LONG way to go) the more I realize the stress that MOST of my stress comes from things in my home that are cluttered/disorganized. It’s wild how much it effects me! I had never realized it, until I started getting rid of them - one small area at a time!

    Ah...the Junque Drawer...
I've just recently worked out how to handle my Junque Drawer.
I live in a 320sqft studio apartment with very little storage options. My only closet has to accommodate both my clothes and a full-size water heater (a FAT one, not a skinny one). So, I really need a Junque Drawer (what some are not calling a 'valet drawer'). After fiddling with a 12"x15" drawer, it suddenly occurred to me to put in several bead organizing boxes, the ones with adjustable dividers. Now I have a way to store and control small hand tools, fasteners, twist ties, rubber bands, AA batteries, Command strips, cup hooks, and any other odd small items I need stored in a central space.
The Junque Drawer is also where I keep my little Dash wafflemaker (I live alone, but I love waffles, so I gave up my full-sized waffle iron for the Dash; much smaller footprint).

If I only had one nife I think my children, their wifes and my older grandchild would laugh and shake their heads! But when I am alone I can only use one knife. I don’t know anyone that can cut with more than one at the same time 😂👍
