    You know the definition for Storage? The place you keep stuff before you throw it out!
    It sounds like you’ve got a good handle on what to store.

  • @chris...9497
    @chris...9497 Год назад +10

    I have lived long enough to recognize all stuff is expensive not just to acquire, but to keep.
    The things you keep 'just in case' take up real estate that you literally pay for. Whether you rent a storage unit or rent/buy a larger living space to accommodate the extra inventory, or even purchase containers to corral & consolidate an item or a category of items, you are paying out of pocket for just the space, even before you also pay for repair, upkeep, or replacement of expired components. Cosmetic supplies become contaminated in a matter of months. Writing & printing implements dry out. Fashion changes. Chemical cleansers break down. Tech items become upgraded, unsupported, & obsolete. Food goes bad and baking mixes lose their ability to rise. Even medicines and nutritional supplements cease to maintain their potency. Time will degrade almost everything you keep 'just in case'. Even durable things may rust or your own health may no longer allow an item's use.
    Anything you keep 'just in case' needs regular attention (through use or care), to provide maintenance to keep it functioning, to keep it clean, and to determine when to let it go. So, in addition to the cost of purchasing the item, paying for space for its storage, and buying its upkeep & repair supplies, you also have to invest time you could be spending on other activities. Instead of experiencing the present or establishing a targeted future, you are actually spending the limited hours of your life and relationships in maintaining a past acquisition 'just in case'. It's not a wise gamble.
    The sooner we understand that physical items are prone to the same entropy and degrading as any other physical thing, the sooner we start becoming more realistic about where we are spending the limited monetary and time costs available to us. 'Just in case' is about insecurity; it's a weakness, not a strength. Most items we keep 'just in case' can be lived without. If they become important later on, we need to trust that we can answer whatever need that particular 'just in case' item would have fulfilled. In most instances (and I'm drawing on a long life of blue-collar experience here), we will never really need the item.
    But the impact of an environment crowded with salvaged and saved items has yet one more cost for us and those who live with us: psychological. It creates stress. It models for others (especially children) the values of insecurity and the importance of how we look to others, which are lies and unhealthy.
    When you declutter, when you tidy up, always ask if the item you touch serves you or if you serve it. Always ask how it improves your life (or the lives living in your environment) RIGHT NOW. Ask yourself what it is costing you to keep it, to store it, to maintain it, to spend time on it, to handle its being around. Would you take it with you when you move, and how much does it add to the load of things to be packed and moved; what would movers charge for that service? How would you feel about losing this specific thing in a disaster? Do you think you would miss it if something happened to it, and would you buy a replacement? How hard would it be to buy it when it's needed? When you declutter or tidy up, you have a moment to reconsider its value to you and your life; you should embrace the grace of that moment.

    Hi. I sent you a message a few days ago about how your tips and advice have helped me to achieve a clutter free mind and home and you replied which actually made my day. Thank you for today’s video. There are a few more things that you have recommended today that I am going to try. I liked the idea of putting those trays in the bathroom cabinet. Things are always falling out and that’s a great way to keep things together. I would never have thought of that. Wishing you all the very best. Pamela. From the uk.

    I love how you're home reflects your tastes and is good example of what minimal looks like for one family. You don't seem to buy everything to fit the natural/nude look other minimalist aim for. I love see that your realistically have color and patterned items in your home.

    • @shannontorrens1
      @shannontorrens1  Год назад +11

      Hi Marlee, Thank you! I don't feel like my home has to be all white with no art to be a minimalist. I guess my type of minimalism is more the amount of things I have in drawers and cupboards rather than a certain type of decor. This is why it confuses me when sometimes people comment that I am not minimal LOL. I think they are just used to a certain minimalist decor aesthetic. I hope you have a great day.

      There's minimalist decor, as in a decorating style, then there's minimalist lifestyle. Sometimes people do both, but some people confuse them and assume if you call yourself minimalist, you're talking about both in design and lifestyle.

    It's amazing how fast "stuff" creeps back into our homes! I inherited my mom's home & had to move in during the hard lock-down. During that time I still had to go to work. Needless to say, your advice about not waiting to have a full day to declutter makes sense. Just taking some time during seasonal changes!🙌🏼 Paper clutter comes in everyday plus boxes are multiplying in my garage!😳

    I realize this is an older post, but sometimes I'm not always able to get to see them in a timely manner. I just want to thank you for such great advice. I was decluttering some items the other day and my husband said, "oh you're going to give this away, I gave this to you!" I felt guilty but the truth was I wasn't using it anymore and I just wanted it back thought about it and it was sitting unused for a couple of years, so I pushed past it and thanked him for thinking about it me. It's not an easy thing to do when it's someone that you are still with or around. But the house is better for it as well!!
    Thank you as always.

    Really good ideas! I keep a standard list of household staples (laundry soap, TP, vitamins, deodorant, etc.) in the notes section of my phone. Everything is checked off on the list but when I am running low on an item, I clear the check mark on my list. On my next shopping list, I will pick up the item needed and check it off on my list. As I live with others, I do a quick run through the list on the first of the month and will note anything needed that I may have missed. It allows me to keep the inventory low and not buying things I don’t need, especially since I have very little storage space in my home. I also rotate my decor throughout the year. I have a small number of items that I love to display but too much to have out all at once, so I rotate them throughout year. This can also go for wall art. I usually do spring/ summer and fall/winter. As I go through and switch things around, I declutter even more, along with following the one in - one out rule.

I do love shopping second hand which means I can give to the thrift shop with no problems. But I do limit now what is brought in for decor. I am getting better with using something at Christmas time and then able to use at Valentines or the Spring. My biggest challenge is crafting items. I love to knit, crochet and just do creativity! Enjoyed your video and am glad to have discovered your channel.
    You do mention a couple of things which raised questions for me.
    1) You spoke of decorating with live/natural seasonal plants & flowers vs items requiring storage during the remainder of the year, which I think is great advice.
    However, it did then sound as if you dispose of those items when the holiday is over. Not an issue with gourds & pumpkins at Hallowe'en or Thanksgiving, but surely you don't toss perennial plants like poinsettias or Christmas cacti after each holiday.
    Not only would that be cruel & eco-unfriendly, but a terrible waste of money, so one still ends up with items to house (and not even out of view as they need light and care. Apologies if I misunderstood your point.
    2) You also mentioned not stockpiling as things can be purchased as needed, however in the large Canadian city in which I live, it has been impossible to get my cat's preferred brand (never mind flavour) of tinned cat food for over 6 months now.
    A variety of basic jarred & canned pantry items have also been permanently out of stock for months at all the large chain supermarkets in the city, and to be honest, although I don't agree with excessive stocking of items (plus in my small apartment storage becomes a major issue very quickly), I would grab as much as I reasonably could of anything that became temporarily available, rather than risk missing that opportunity for more months to come.
    Hopefully, this is a long term but still temporary issue, and eventually your advice will become practical again.
    One last point is that space available for organization and storage can vary dramatically. The same couple might live in a 4 bedroom home with a full basement and garage, or a 350 sq ft. condo with barely enough area to house their absolute necessities.
    Much like decorating & renovating channels often failing to recognize the different needs of homeowners vs. renters, I feel that most organization advice fails to distinguish between the large owned homes of some viewers, and the tiny studios & apartments available to others.
    Although the guidelines hold up in theory, the practicalities are very different for those opposite ends of the home environment scale.
    I would love to see some truly practical advice for non-minimalist people living in small (particularly rental) spaces who have a reasonable amount of basic stuff to deal with.
    Perhaps you could lead the way in addressing that niche.

      The written word is high risk for misreading without the benefits of facial and vocal expression to provide nuance, and it appears you may have taken some offence or felt attacked by my comment.
      My questions were solely for legit clarification and to prompt awareness of some other perspectives.

      The way the comments appear to us youtubers is different than how it looks to the viewer. We get all the comments in one area so its hundreds of comments on all different videos. I think my initial comment was maybe made thinking it was on a different video and then when I realized it was on this video it was edited. So that is probably why it changed. Also the only reason I am seeing this second comment is because I was in here looking for something else. Just so you know YT does not notify us if a second comment is left on something that we already responded to. I thought I would just let you know in case you ever wonder why people might not respond. We just literally don't see the comments again. I appreciate you being here in this community =)

    Very good tips to ponder. When I first started decluttering I was overwhelmed and got stuck a lot. Then I came up with my rule that one in = 2 or 3 out and the outs did not need to be in the same catagory as what was purchased. Then every 2-4 weeks whatever I had was donated to a church thrift shop. It took a while for me to notice a difference but was far less stressful compared to emptying out a stuffed to the max closet and having to deal with it all at once or have a mess for days because I ran out of time. Now I can focus on like items because some of it is already gone.

    Liked most of your ideas BUT not buying things that are on a good sale seems like wasting $$$ to me as you are buying items at full price, eg. childrens clothes for the next size, season.

    • @shannontorrens1
      @shannontorrens1  Год назад +1

      My point is don't buy things unless you need them. I have actually wasted money on sale items for kids to "grow into" just to find that by the time they fit it's the wrong season. So obviously just do what works for you these are just suggestions to avoid extra things being stored in your home 😁

    • @lovingsunshine3515
      @lovingsunshine3515 Год назад

      I tried to do this but I actually ended up wasting money. By the time my kids are able to fit into the clothes I bought on clearance, they no longer like the style or color. I actually prefer buying items on regular price knowing that it will be used or worn immediately bc it prevents me from adding more clutter or forgetting that item I’ve been saving.
