- South Africa’s High Commissioner Moe Schaik, Palestine’s representative Mona Abuamara, former UN Rapporteur Richard Falk, Palestinian human rights advocate Wesam Ahmad and professor Avi Lewis participated in a press conference to call on Canada to endorse South Africa’s request for the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to make an urgent order declaring Israel in breach of its obligations under the Genocide Convention.

I’ve been screaming this and trying to figure out what I can do as a Canadian to get them to support South Africa. I feel it’s disgusting to even attempt to say truth and reconciliation for ANYTHING and use that as a defence of moral betterment in Canada while actively supporting a genocide of native people.

For many decades , the Canadians have had no independent foreign policy . Their policy is literally in lock step with the US . As long as we have people like Trudeau,Poilievre in government who are always very timid to offend our powerful ,aggressive neighbor , one can forget Canada playing a real role in diplomacy and in siding with any just causes , unless of course , the US allows Canada to do so .When I became a Canadian ,I was proud of being a Canadian . Today, I am embarrassed being a Canadian .
I basically agree with you, with only the minor qualification that Canada can get away with differing from the US on foreign polity to a limited extent. Since this case is very important to the United States, it is hard to imagine that Canada will support South Africa. I think Canada will probably remain neutral, so as to avoid angering the US and also avoid incriminating itself.
I suggest an alternative explanation. While US and Canada do tend to have the same foreign policies as does the UK the reason is not that it is the US imposing it on us. The US adopts those weird policies because of the Lobby. Canada also has it's own Lobby. So do the UK and others. It is co-ordinated lobbying pressure that makes our politicians go along in all countries where the mass media is tightly controlled..
