    Seeing the coolant bubble while cranking is a telltale sign it's got compression leaking into the cooling system, when dealing with used motors best thing to do is immediately perform a cylinder leak down test since that will give you an idea of the overall top end health of the engine and is more thorough and easier to perform on the stand then a standard compression test

      I'm also surprised that they didn't realised the water shooting from the radiator. I bet it's the cylinder wall(s) has a huge crack on them, so water is leaking in to the chamber and gets pushed through the exhaust valve and into the exhaust ...

    • @jibbsey
      @jibbsey 3 года назад +14

      I'd be surprised if it's the block itself being an NA motor, more likely to be a cracked or warped head or blown headgasket between a cylinder and water jacket pushing compression into cooling system when cranking and drawing coolant into the cylinder on the downstroke then pushing it out on exhaust stroke into the headers etc.

    • @Weissenschenkel
      @Weissenschenkel 3 года назад +12

      @@jibbsey it makes sense, especially if the engine suffered from overheating. What bugs me are the metal chunks in the chambers.

      Change head gasket for a new one? Rly, if there's signs of an overheat and the coolant is leaking through the exhaust this wasn't an engine fit for change-over but having gone that far, it could maybe bore out to 1.8L, balance crank, re-size rods, port n polish, some bigger valve. How expensive could it be?

    • @captainzoll3303
      @captainzoll3303 3 года назад +1

      @@santyclause8034 boring, porting, rebalancing etc. is definitely going to be more than $700 to get another motor.
      and with how poorly the engine was probably serviced, i'd guess there's a lot of physical damage to the engine block, with the lack of compression in any cylinders and absolutely puking coolant, it's at least got a warped head, or at worst a few collapsed cooling jackets.

Knowing the mathematics of 2-wheeler vs 4-wheeler through fast corners I waited for them to come past and stuck the GLS in 3rd gear which will go up to 150 (metric here in SA) I was rewarded by some grand sights of fastish superbike dudes going fast as they could.

    Everyone talking about leak down tests, compression tests, attaching starter motor etc.
    All you need to do is turn the engine over by hand when you get it. If it's super easy to turn, then you should be worried and then you can perform additional troubleshooting. But the first thing you always do is check that rotation. If it's too hard to turn, that's a different set of problems. Would have taken all of 20 seconds to test that.

    Read and follow the manufacturer's guidelines for installing any spark plugs!
    Plugs on some engines perform better or worse depending on their rotational position inside the combustion chamber. "Half a turn" and "24 NM" can make a difference in terms of knock and misfires.

    If you see your coolant tank shooting off like a geyser that could mean that you have air going right past the head gasket from the pistons compressing. I reckon the motor has a broken connecting rod, piston rings, or snapped crank amongst a blown head gasket or even cracked block. I think the best thing you can do now is get an extra large dack dack and just send it, full EV 4x4.

    I'm not sure if you have seafoam or berrymans down there but you can run that in your oil and fuel and it actually does a really good job of cleaning out all the shit and if you removed the sumpand rocker cover again after a few bottles, oil changes, and heat cycles in there it'd look similar to the 1.3. Obviously it doesn't fix damage but it really does a great job of breaking up carbon and cleaning the internals and fuel system.

    sometimes when an engine sits for a long time the piston rings dont make good contakt with the cylinder wall. Putting some engine oil in through the spark plug holes in the engine and some in the intake fixes this issue.
