      @@NextdoorHomestead that is very exciting. I have strawberries to come back every year but I only end up eating a few. Unfortunately I don’t know how to keep rabbits or squirrels out of my garden yet.

      @@Conuremomof2try sprinkling cayenne pepper on the strawberries. A harmless snout of pepper will deter them. Works for mice and rats who also don’t like mint, which grows like a weed here.

    I've been lucky with building raised beds, because there's a factory not too terribly far from me that sets out tons of pallets free for the taking. They're quite heavy duty too, with slats about an inch thick. They are heat treated, but I haven't seen methyl bromide stamps or anything. I've built numerous things from them, including a chicken coop. For the raised beds, I basically spend my time and some of those decking screws. It's great. The Redwood looks great, but I'm trying to cheap out. I tried the cedar fence picket back when lumber prices were insane, and yeah, it didn't pan out. They look bad, and the wood is super thin and bowed easily.

      Nice! I haven't done the pallet beds (I like the way they come out though) but I'm surprised to hear your cedar pickets bowed out. I had surprisingly good luck with them in our last garden that was built during the height of the pandemic lumber surge.
      Thanks for watching!

    Always interested in more knowledge. But here’s an idea : what about showing us an elevated garden bed? For those of us who have no yard, are older or have a disability and can’t bed over a ground level garden bed.
    Thanks for sharing your experiences with us. I just happened to find your YT channel. Glad I did. What stated are you located?

    Is redwood just cedar? I thought redwood was generally protected now?

    • @NextdoorHomestead
      @NextdoorHomestead  6 месяцев назад

      Heya! Nope, they have similar properties for the raised bed project, but different trees. Redwood is still harvested, just from younger commercial farms now rather than old growth (which is one reason it's not as durable as the old stuff). Old growth redwood forests are thankfully protected.

      Redwood is a west coast thing. They don’t even have redwood at Home Depot in the east. In California we had beautiful redwood everything but now that we’re back in North Carolina, we have beautiful cedar beds.
