What they are saying is 'You arent worth that 6.8M 5th year" and we're gonna try and sign you to a more discounted rate. Najee is like the 23rd Highest paid RB this season, he wouldnt even be in the top 10 in 2025 had they picked that up. This guy has 1000 yards the last 3 years in a row "NO OTHER RB IN THE NFL HAS DONE THAT" So I kinda disagree that it means nothing respectfully DK

Mr DK you talking about the D-line i personally feel that ever since Stephon Tuitt retired that D-line took a step back when it comes to wrecking havoc on the opposing team. I do have high hopes for Keanu Benton so we'll see what he brings going into his 2nd season.

I think you forgot about Tuitt we need another Stephon Tuitt. When Tuitt and Heyward was together on that field our d-line was one of the tops in the league. That's what we need.
Yup-pass rush on both edges and up the middle from either Cam or Tuitt was a nightmare for QBs…. which is why they through so many picks under pressure.
We as steelers fans appreciate what Naj has been able to do with a sub par oline OC and QB. Still manages to hit his 1000 yard mark and usually turns it up in the 2nd half of the season when we really need it. I hope they take care of him, he’s earned it!

It makes sense to let Najee establish his market value with his last year of his rookie contract being his first under Arthur Smith. Same for Justin Fields, who can be signed to a Trubisky sized deal, if he is who this organization thinks he is. Unfortunately, the hot takers will make a mountain out of this mole hill. ❤🔥🍻
Facts! trubisky isn't even as good as Fields and was signed to a lot of money as a backup QB even though he was initially the starter over Pickett prior to losing his job. Justin is in a good position behind Russ. It would be a HUGE mistake to utilize him as a KICK-OFF returner (if those articles are true).

Thanks DK. I was wondering what was going on with Najee's fifth year option , But I couldn't see Arthur Smith trying to fix something that isn't broken. Make it better, sure. I agree with everything you have said. It would be great to see the defense get more penetration. With all the moves they have made this season, they are closer to that goal than ever. Great show DK

I'm looking forward to watching Najee run behind a good O-line. He's spent three seasons trying to make something out of nothing. To see him running through real holes and punishing the second level will be a sight to behold. Think The Bus in his prime.
Najee needs to prove that he's not going to run up the backs of the O-line the first half of the season and then he becomes a good RB the rest of the season.. Hopefully it was Canada's fault and Najee will have a great season.
It's crazy how so many people don't understand how logical and smart this would be. They just want to throw the kitchen sink at Najee, yet every single logical person by mid-year last year was calling for Najee to be benched. How quickly people forget how terrible Najee was starting last year.

I wasn't worried when I heard the news. And I fully expect the Steelers to attempt to extend him. But I do have one concern and it's not the potential money they might give him, it's the years. I'm a full believer that given the wear and tear on the position and steeper decline that players in that position face as result (not to mention that you can draft RBs and get great production, especially for the money, out of rookies), that RB should only be extended on 3yr deals. Anything longer than that and I think you run the potential to dig a hole for yourself organizationly. So if I were the Steelers I'd tell Naj we will give you 3yrs at X amount of dollars and if he wants more years you let him walk and you draft his replacement.
I was thinking the same thing in terms of years. I feel like 3 yr 8-10 mil a year would be beneficial to all. He will make a couple more mil this coming year and possibly be in better position to sign a 3rd contract for 1-2yrs being only 29
its worth mentioning that if our offense can sustain drives and keep these guys fresher will help in allowing them to pin their ears back and come off the bench alot meaner

My question... What is the upside for the Steelers in declining Najee's 5th year option? It would have cost them merely 7 million and would have seemed to provide some stability in the RB room after all this work putting together the O-Line. I don't see why Najee wouldn't want to test free agency after next year. Help us understand a little more deeply of what might have went into Omar & Tomlin's thought process on this one. Thanks!!!

Age and injuries have really hampered the Dline. Some of the injuries are due to age to a certain extent. I have been excited about Benton he was definitely my choice to draft last year. Hope he can continue to develop. I still think we will be looking at drafting Dline high next season as we should. We need two monsters up front and we have been missing at least one since Tuitt left. Hoping this year that there will be a better rotation and someone will help out Cam much more.
Well, at least DK helped me understand that najee isn't just being discarded.
26 is the running back cliff , theres very little denying that. The productive backs 27 & beyond are the anomalies.
DK, I promise you both Najee and Jaylen will run for a 1000 Yds. And McCormick will play Center and Guard in 2024 and be dominate!

Contrary to what a lot of the comments say, this likely has nothing to do with Warren vs Harris and who's better. The answer is in the first 2 mins of this podcast. It's just like with Fields, they plan on resigning him to a longer deal now, which makes the 5th yr option a mute point. They want both RB's and I like that choice personally.

i think the fact that they didnt pick up his 5th year option shows that tomlins opinion doesnt carry as much weight as it use to why else would they let him become an unrestricted fa? someone will offer him more money than we will pay. especially with warren.

Steelers fans. I like and enjoy DK, but this is one of the most naive takes I’ve heard in awhile. Not picking up the fifth year option is a clear indicator that they do not believe Najee is worth more than 6.79M next year. There is no if ands or buts about that. Also I do not see Najee resigning for less than 6.79M as he has been a large voice in the RB payment market.
So why would you ever NOT pick up the option and pay him more than 6.79M. That’s terrible business. Terrible. Sorry DK. But financially your take is off the wall
I'd extend Fields through 2026 at a back-up base salary, with starting incentives that would pay him a whole lot more. This is assuming Wilson is gone after 2024. You have to draft a guy in 2025 and have him and Fields compete for the starting job in 2025. If Fields balls out, great. You still have him for another year to decide what to do with him. If he's THAT good, maybe you extend him and look to trade your young guy if people are interested. A lot will depend how good your young guy looks. If your rookie wins the job, you've got a good back up for the next couple years.
People don't consider warren.getting a better offer elsewhere

No way Pitt spends a lot of money on a RB. They are a dime a dozen. Can draft a top tier in 2nd or 3rd round now. They have about a 5yr shelf life

Numbers don’t lie. 3.9 yards per carry for his career. League average is 4.4/4.5. Warren had 5.2 behind the same line. Najee has power, but lacks speed, vision, and elusiveness.

Najee is a good RB....nothing special, despite the personal relationship Tomlin has with him, player contracts should not be based on personal relationships.
Najee is NOT a generational RB, he doesn't move the needle from a talent, production standpoint.
With these aggressive offseason moves by Khan, I think something bigger is at work. The Steelers seem to be in SB or bust mode. Tomlin's silly, futile

Building an offense around a spine-to-be 27 year old RB, with lots of mileage, with subpar vision, little burst, is a bad financial investment and Khan knows this.

Go with a starting RB that gives you the most yards and play to his strengths. Thats Warren. Steelers won 2 Superbowls with Fast Willie Parker and won none with Bettis starting, all due respect to Bus.
Investing in O-Line = no need to pay premium RB $$$. I think Najee leaves in free agency and Steelers draft his replacement in 2025.

Absolutely not. What are you on, my friend? Najee is around 8 - 9 mil per year of value on a longer term deal. Even then, a 4-year deal is way too much for a RB, especially with all this insane talent in the upcoming drafts and the fact that Najee is getting old and will be on the decline moving forward. Also, don't you dare forget about how by mid-year last year people were calling for Najee to be benched or let go. I guarantee you were a Najee hater by mid year last year as well. I like Jaylen but he hasn’t had to carry the team. We don’t really know if he can even do that. Najee had played well despite having literally the worst O line in football for half his career. He’ll be back.
Nobody should be advocating for any single RB to carry the load…. They should continue to split the rushes but there’s no reason to think it shouldn’t be 60/40 in favor of Warren being a far more explosive player.

Sorry, but I don't trust the word of Tomlin or Rooney anymore. I love the Steelers and always will, but as long as Tomlin is the HC, I will just have a seeing is believing attitude. They have to resign najee to try to save face with the players if that's really still even possible, after they have showed their true colors by drafting a first round Lt to play at the RT position intentionally. Criminal quite frankly, and trust me the players see this, imagine Broderick or this last Lt pick falling in the draft to the next team which would play them at their Lt position and the many many millions of dollars more their career would have been worth. This classless sneaky plan by the Steelers shows beyond any doubt that these players and their careers are expendable to the Steelers, I'm still in shock about this blatant trickery and disrespect of the player the Steelers have revealed to us all. If Broderick would have failed at Lt last year then this wouldn't be a issue of organization "character", like it is now. One of those two young first round Lt is gonna get the career screw by design and intent by the Steelers now revealed classless brass and ownership. Trust me, every single player in the NFL sees what the Steelers are doing to one of those two young men, explains alot of past decision making quite frankly, Steelers are good liars and deceiver's thru the years no doubt. Hope he gets extended. He is the consummate “team first” player with a great work ethic. Jaylen doesn’t work without Najee similarly to LeVeon Bell not working without those big men in front of him. They work in tandem.
