How to sing with Forward / Mask Placement (The REAL Way most vocal coaches don't tell you)

  • Singers are often told to place the voice in the mask or the forward placement so that they can create a more powerful and aggressive high note, but is that actually useful?
    Most struggling or left brained singers tend to misunderstand what the mask or forward placement in singing really means.
    Instead of allowing their voice to sit in the high Complete Mixed Voice™ Placement and resonate freely up there, they instead engage their low stubborn and heavy chest voice placement to try to get into the forward / mask placement.
    As a result, instead of seeing fast results with the forward / mask placement, they become a victim of their low placement.
    In this video, I explain what a REAL forward / mask placement really means, and how the REAL forward / mask placement is nothing more than a reflection of a singer's high Complete Mixed Voice™ Placement!
    Access your high Complete Mixed Voice™ Placement, and you'd have naturally accessed your forward / mask placement as a result.

    Man this is the key. All my previous teachers told me to sing in the mask but with a chest voice (mouth) approach and I felt that I was not hitting the point. Now I have realized that I needed nasal airflow and sing those notes from the head voice in order to maintain the larynx stable. I don’t understand why vocal coaching is so unmature yet… it’s not so difficult to do it well

    How can I ever thank you enough for saving my voice?! Stumbled upon this video because I was frustrated and convinced there was no way my voice would ever be able to project and resonate in the style of opera. I was so frustrated because my teachers all told me "sing into the mask", but all my effort ended up doing was straining my voice. You turned the smoke and mirrors of higher placement into something I now understand much better. THANK YOU!

    This young fella is a genius!
    I've been doing Ken Tamplin's course for a year now and I'm still struggling to get through my break without all kinds of straining.
    I'm doing the exercises daily but though I'm doing them exactly like he says, I notice as I go higher I sound slightly different to Ken!
    He sounds like he's a bit more breathy as he goes higher where my cords are really connecting and loud. I can't go high without them connecting strongly and I thought this was a good thing but it means when I get higher I can't pronounce words as there is too much pressure on my cords.
    I could not figure out what the difference was until now!
    Ken is doing correctly what Jay is describing here whereas I'm doing it wrong as Jay is describing here!
    There is such a subtle difference but it makes all the difference and no-one else, not even Ken, has ever mentioned this before!
    I don't know if coaches neglect this key element in order to keep us as clients for as long as possible or if they just don't know because as Jay has said before, most coaches were naturally good singers and probably don't even realise this phenomenon happens to us non-natural singers!!!
    Finding this placement has changed my voice overnight! And my attention is now focussed on having that high placement that allows the mixed voice to occur easily instead of trying to find the mixed voice by coming up to it from chest voice!
    Doing the exercises in Kens course from chest voice actually prevents me from getting into this high mixed placement.
    Instead now I first get into correct high placement and then I can do Kens exercises with the mix of head and chest voice and can now sound like him throughout my range!
    It's early days doing this but it's damn exciting and is absolutely profound!
    Thank you Jay!!!

      @@Antonioskymusic I would give credit to Jay for getting me to find the placement.
      TBH IMO the course is expensive for what little there is. But it has helped me.
      I've since bought Power to Sing £20 course too and am doing the exercises from that but with the placement I got from Jay.
      Even so I'm not a natural singer and if I don't exercise daily I lose what little gains I have made vocal wise.
      I seem to get something from each course but none of them have got me singing in public yet!

I've taught as well, but what I was teaching, from what I learned from other coaches never felt true or right. What you are saying is 100% right based on how I originally learned to sing and forgot, an on from the perspective of someone who has been singing and performing for many, many years. I hope this has been a rewarding career for you and it takes you very far. You are gifted. Thank you.

    This actually really helped! Mask always confused me because when I'd do it I'd feel the vibrations in my nose and mouth but it sounded whiny and easily broke, so why was this register so emphasized? But it was the only register I knew I could make go loud and high, so I instead figured out how to pull my choice back into my throat and chest but go high which isn't strong AT ALL for me but sounds much more pleasant than the nasal twang sound I'd get from what I thought was mask. Now I can sing and get vibrations in both my chest and mask and it makes the best sound I've ever made after watching this

    I went through this same issue of having a naturally low placement when singing and it was hard to habit to break. it takes time but once you find it and apply it to your speaking voice and use of mix voice is something that changes your life. I was disappointed with your video because you gave examples of why its important and how it works, but you did not demonstrate the sound difference between forward placement and low placement. This would give your potential new clients confidence in you. good luck with your course Jay.

      Both are secondary to the Placement. Get the high placement right and both comes naturally. For most people, the focusing on breathing and supporting is a mere distraction from their true problem (i.e. Being stuck in a low placement).

    I still dont get it. So what do i do with my soft palate, tongue, throat?? Is it actually nasal as in is my soft palate open or is it just resonating in that area so i should keep it closed??

    • @heythere6983
      @heythere6983 4 месяца назад

      I used to get so confused with the micromanaging of my structures .i find when you leave the soft palate kinda open it creates a sorta smoother airier tone even though you have full closure on vocal cords that is strong .
      So instead of focusing on controlling soft palate directly I’d focus on the tone your getting my glowing air in that direction . Move the air there then get the airy lighter vibe with that placement .
      Then also moving the air forward near the hard palate feels like Iv seen some pellet say more “metallic” .
      Then you can combine the too for mix the tone. I do find I need a lot more air support to do the soft palate open thing. When you sing in the mask you can sometimes feel your nose vibrate.
      My teacher claimed I should fee everything vibrate but I never experienced that, sometimes I did feel my nose vibrate , most of the time I simply didn’t notice, I just use the tone to guide me frankly .
      I think pursuing tone with proper airflow will naturally take care of what is physically going on , Atleast you won’t be super concerned with every nuance because if you’re producing the tone , the structures are doing what they are supposed to do.
      I used to have to ignore my teachers instructions because she made me hyper focus on my body and not my tone and it felt really weird forcing my soft palate up, I can easily do that , they wasn’t the issue though. I’d said learning to blow air out and hold your breath, breath work in general is really 80 percent of if
      Then placing the voice and air kinda in your soft palate and upward, throwing it a bit forward, you also do this a bit higher in your range, itl be more noticeable there and maybe easier since you are using more support to get those high notes if you do it with a fair amount of volume.
      So I recommend don’t over analysis but think about placing the air and altering the tone in a noticeable way, and get constant airflow

    • @DenisMorissetteJFK
      @DenisMorissetteJFK 3 года назад

      I hope the author will correct me if I'm wrong: High placement:Imagine you open you mouth, and insert a huge "C" in it. The top-right of the C touches your front-upper teeth and the bottom of the C touches the front-bottom of your teeth. Picture starting the sound of a vowell from the front-bottom teeth, traveling along the C and ending up on the front-top part of the teeth. Low placement: Imagine you see someone getting hurt in a video you're watching. You would probably do "ooh!". That "Ooh" is low placement. To be avoided in singing. You cannot access the high placemet if you are hitting sounds in low placement.

    • @DenisMorissetteJFK
      @DenisMorissetteJFK 3 года назад

      Second thing: It is generally advised to "sing on the vowel". It takes imagination, though. Imagine you're making a vowell by pressing it down from the top and compare with going from beneath. It's the same thing as high VS low placement.
