Low larynx... Secret to Singing High Notes? (Personal Experiment footage Revealed!)

  • Can we really sing better high notes by lowering our larynx? We probably hear advice all over the internet telling us to lower our larynx by yawning or by producing a hooty or dopey sound to create a dark sound.
    But does that really work? And is it really practical? In this video, I show you exactly why I never advocate for a lowered larynx, because it actually puts your tongue in a position that prevents you from applying the open throat technique.
    And as a result, that prevents you from accessing your high Complete Mixed Voice™ Placement, like I've explained in my Perfect Tongue Position Video.
    The key is really to keep a neutral larynx, like I've demonstrated in this video. That way, you will sound much more natural and you will be singing in your own voice, without artificially changing it and risk sounding stupid like what I've shown you.
    In fact, you should not even be focusing on adjusting your larynx and you really should be solving the root cause of your singing problem, which is not being able to access your high Complete Mixed Voice™ Placement and allowing all your high notes to sit there.

    First teacher that I actually undertood. Sir, I watched you’re tongue placements and things just became so much easier. I was told to have a flat tongue but when I came across you’re video, I understood tongue strain. When singing with a flat tongue, I have noticed the back of my throat closed off but with you’re technique it felt free and my throat felt open. I have noticed a huge difference. Thank you thank you thank you❤

    Lowering the larynx is not bad advice. All the great singers did it and are on record as saying it’s the way to sing Corelli, Del Monaco, Caruso, Granforte, Tebaldi, etc… without out it you lack squillo and chiaroscuro the issue is not that it’s bad advice it’s that people are singing into mics and don’t need squillo and they also don’t understand how to do it properly.

    I just stumbled upon this video. I did not do your course or your method or anything like that. BUT
    I'm a baritone, my range goes from C2 to B5 where B4 is the highest note i can reach with a chesty sound, but that is very very strained and with a high larynx. Just very recently i discovered that i sang with a lower placement and understood what it means to place the resonance upwards on my soft palate (did the bite a pencil and feel where it vibrates test). In the past couple days, i've been trying to sing upwards, placing the resonance in the higher resonators through my raised soft palate and immediately i felt a release of the weight and tension, which also made my larynx relax in a more neutral position.
    So i'm just here to comment that i agree with what you're saying here, that the high larynx is not a cause of my problems, but the consequence of my problems and that learning how to sing with a higher placement of the resonance have resulted in a lower larynx position and that worked much better than all the other exercises i tried to push my larynx down.
    That said, the tension and high larynx problems of people have different causes, just because this relates to my causes it doesn't mean it would be the same for everyone, but im glad to see more people on youtube talking about how placing the resonance higher can potentially relieve high notes tension and therefore help on singing with a lower larynx. It wasn't this video that made me realize this, but a coupled days after i realized this i found this video and im happy to see people talking about it.
    Good information here

    Thank you so much, I thought I had to keep my larynx low and it had to stay static, but from you video, it is normal for larynx to move, but should be trained to move less when going higher.

    Thank you a lot for this video! I've discovered a bit of mixed voice feeling today, by using your method for the tongue position and it really worked! Now I'm just raising a bit too much my larynx and I'm going to try your tips, because I was victim as well of the low larynx that ruins your tongue position and gets you stuck in chest voice! I love your videos! I hope with hard work I'll finally develop my mixed voice! By the way, I'm born with a low larynx, but actually I don't feel that I have more space for my larynx to rise haha

      EXACTLY dude. Even when you are born with a low larynx, you feel like you don't have more space for your larynx to rise... could you imagine how singers with naturally born high larynx feels? It's literal "death sentence" for them to sing high notes if they don't access their Complete Mixed Voice™ Placement like what you're trying to do now.

    Haha I took lessons from an opera singer even tho I was gonna sing modern music. It’s just I had heard they were the best at protecting the voice and I liked the idea of singing with power . Well I got tinnitus from it because she always had me belt through everything (we always worked on popular songs I liked after so it’s not like she didn’t know what style I wanted ). She never let me sing in this way , so I laughed so hard at your low larynx vid. I mean it was really like asking me to split and do a squat at the same time. She micro managed everything for opera belts and powerhouse sounds, basically controlled shouting.
    Then I’d try to sing and I couldn’t write at home or anything because my voice is way too loud and flat . Opera singers don’t have that nice tone or texture it’s very open and beam like. Riffs were also something I couldn’t do. When I practiced on my own and took another online course she was like wow you got better quick! I didn’t tell her why .
    Iv been struggling to nail my tone. I did find I always sang with tons of compression and I didn’t even know it was called compression.
    Do you have a range of notes for tenors where they typically start to compress their voices more for head voice , like where the placement starts to shift and also the openness can be compressed ?
    I’m always trying to find a tone and I find it makes me sound bad because idk how to lay it consistently , I try forward, backward, lower open sound in the larynx, compressed, rasp etc and I feel like if I had a basis of where to typically place the voice then I can build on that foundation .
    I just find I’m either super open and then compressEd and it’s not polished . When I was with her I opened my range a lot but I was ultimately really loud and nasal , it was a terrible sound. Iv learned not to be so nasal since I don’t need it for high notes (unless I do it her way) and I also don’t need to constantly belt .

    • @JayJaeOfficial
      @JayJaeOfficial  3 года назад +1

      @@justinpaquette224 That can absolutely be done. You have to understand that literally every single male pop singers who are famous can stay in mix AT LEAST up till C5, higher voices like Bruno Mars goes even up to E5 / F5. The key is to compress in your Complete Mixed Voice™ Placement without allowing it to migrate further up into the head placement. Once you can do that, staying in mix up to C5 is not going to be any issue :)

    • @justinpaquette224
      @justinpaquette224 3 года назад

      @@JayJaeOfficial For me, I've found that to get my mix to not go to headvoice, but rather continue way up there, I need to have a good amount of volume. A lot of people say singing in mix should be able to also be quiet, but I just can't see how I would stay quiet and also still be in mix from C5 and up. If I sing quietly I'll be in headvoice around A4. I sing mostly soul music and they seem to almost always be belting into their mix

    The key is lowering the larynx without using the tongue (tongue independence). Pretty easy with exercises. Hard to take this seriously with all the cursing in your videos.
