My dog was born in Roper. His heavily pregnant mom was captured by Washington Co animal control but the shelter was full, so he was born in the officer's backyard. They thankfully had the whole littler and mom transferred to Peak Lab in Apex which is where we adopted him from. Thanks for the tour!
I enjoyed your walk and talk tour of Roper, NC! That town is interesting. As of 2024, Roper's population is 502. Many residents are former military personnel who served in Vietnam. In 1890, the John L. Roper Lumber Company was established in the town, which was previously known as Lee's Mill. The town was renamed Roper in 1890 after the lumber company was established there. The company inspired the town's growth and helped build railroads and rebranded what had been considered an inferior product into lumber that dominated the market as "North Carolina Pine." Its timber empire stretched from Norfolk, Virginia, to Jacksonville, North Carolina, and made Norfolk the East Coast's leading lumber market. The company also organized its lumbermen to become members of what became known as the North Carolina Pine Association. Roper Lumber Company discontinued all operations on or about June 30, 1921. Fyi - Roper, NC hosts an Annual Peanut Festival each year; the festival dates are decided by town leaders each year.
The old service station set the tone for what I was expecting to see in Roper. My guess is, when Rt 64 was built thru NC, that pretty much left the town in the dust. I'm guessing that 20 years from now it will look pretty much the same, but one never knows. That said, I did enjoy the walk with you, and we will see what the next town delivers. Cheers.
I think Roper will always be a small rural town because of the bypass, but also think its citizens like it that way. You don’t have to be big to be perfect. Thanks for sharing your thoughts 👍
Elizabeth city has colleges: ECSU, COA and Christian college, Would have been nice to capture that along with other areas where people shop and eat. I would suggest to drive around the town verses walking down a few streets.
Olivers Market used to be located in the building now occupied by the African-American History Museum. I used to stop in there for a snack and chat with the owner whenever passing through town. It had fresh meats, vegetables, canned goods and most anything else needed by the town residents. Unfortunately a same ol' Dollar General located up the street and forced Olivers out of business. I really miss it. It had character.
We need more stores like Olivers Market. One day all these towns are going to wake and find all the DG’s out of business and there will be no where to go because they killed all the competition. Thanks for sharing your memories of Roper.👍

Thanks for the info. I will have to return. For this series, I am only filming the town centers so that I can get to all of them within a reasonable amount of time.
Looks like a neat little town thanks for sharing Timothy have a great day
Thanks 😀

Sounds like Roper was a little big town back in the day. Thanks for another information post. 👍

I'm impressed that they have sidewalks. Wilmington should be so lucky. 🙄

Yeah at night it’s crowed exactly on weekends.
