Mighty Nein: *walks in on Molly dropping a corpse to the ground, among several other corpses, accompanied by various cult members. Caduceus: I'll embrace the awkwardness. Hi, I don't believe we've met.
I just immagine essek scrying on them like "Wonder what they are up to right now" And just watches yasha become a big woman then a little woman, and then a giant worm becomes a rabbit bites fjord and goes back to normal. and is just like "Nevermind"
Brilliant. I'm gonna start imagining allies scrying on the party during every ridiculous fight. The T-Rex fighting giant crabs on the icebreaker, fighting Black Ooze in a rave tunnel...
Not just Taliesin. The whole cast is very clearly pissed off by Lucien calling Molly "an empty speck". And honestly, so am I. Confirmation that Molly is irretrievable is hard enough to swallow, but having Lucien showing so much disdain for the person he was really twists the knife in the wound. Fantastic move by Matt here again.
@@bdletoast09 I really love how matt turned that body from something you want to hug, to something you want to punch in the face and kick in the nards.
Confirmation of Molly being irretrievable is loose. When Cadueceus did the insight check, Matt's reply was "He seems to believe what he says." They believed Molly to be dead and now Lucien is walking around. Beau makes further points after... My opinion- Mollymauk is only lurking behind the veil, not gone beyond...at least not yet.
That’s what I thought! With Taliesin, you never know, his ‘issues pinning down the accent’ could’ve been more of a real Molly lore thing than an actual problem doing the accent.
@Laura Martin-Falla Definitely this. I'm more than happy to accept some deeper lore, despite this, but you have to disregard confirmed PC *mehs* to carry on with them.
@@JJ-qe4jo idk, he's just really bad at actual accents. Different voices he can do, but different accents aren't his forte at all. During Campaign 1, he kept stuttering over what he saying and was always relatively quiet because Taliesin can't actually do an accent in a raised.
I don't know, in Jester's mind it probably was her worst message. She didn't make it a personal message at all, very professional and "boring." She didn't even ask him if he was pooping! XD
I don't know why but I find it the most adorable thing that Matt goes "I bought a packet of turtles". Noticing a pattern with polymorph he actually went and bought a whole PACKET of TURTLE MINIS. I CAN'T.
Well the list of things they have created with polymorph this campaign (incomplete): A cow (was still dangerous) A red feret (died of fall damage, or the fire elemental) Giant turtle (fjord's bane) Painted turtle Giant eagle/owls (party only) Mammoths (party only) Dire Badger (to dig) T-rex (C-rex) (Matt should never have given them dinosaurs) Dragon Turtle -> leather back turtle -> sea cucumber After learning their lessons about polymorphing dragons and the like they have learned small, slow, harmless (mostly), 1hp don't touch, must privide the stat block themselves (game flow) Which means they pick a very limited number of creatures, so Matt was 10,000% justified in buying a turtle set for them, as its their favorite panicking polymorph result. Edit: May 31, 2021 Orcas (deadliest sea mammal, not so dangerous beached in Xorhas, fun to ski behind) Moth (1 int is bad for stealth missions) Sheep (spoiler) Bunny (somehow managed to revert itself with Fjords auto retaliation sword) Various humanoids? (I feel like they used a polymorph to replace seeming once) Cat (Jester in the Tower) Honestly, if Matt hasn't collected mini's for every animal he can think of yet i would be surprised.
They've used orcas a few times starting with the stone giants but I have yet to see a killer whale mini. I kind of love it when he doesn't have something and can only substitute it for something silly though.
3:01:56 "That's the look of a cat that's considering unionizing" - Taliesin I nearly missed that gem but Marisha's laugh made me go back to look for it.
Yasha giving Molly/Lucien the Four Leaf Clover he gave her hurt my heart man. You could really tell this entire session how much Yasha misses her friend.
I hope Matt gonna somehow play the fact that Lucien accepted it. Also him being so sure Molly is totally gone feels kinda intentional from Matt's part to not backfire on Lucien in one way or the other. I dunno... well, we find out in it's time ahah
@@marquise-peppermint Not entirely unlike Molly being SO adamant that his past self was SUPER DEAD while repressing memories that were starting to surface...
Taliesin: Creates for himself an uber-cool character with Mollymauk Tealeaf, and then inadvertently kills him himself early in the campaign. Matt: Turns him into the amnesic episode of his archvillain and refers to Molly as "the uninvited guest who took the reins a bit..." and "the empty speck" Caduceus: SOOO OFFENDED! 😆
ok but gotta feel bad for lucien, imagine waking up from being dead, in your own body and everything, but there used to be some asshole's soul in it, so now you got a lot of weird tatoos, just as much stds, drug addiction and some random weirdos following you telling you you that asshole was so cool
Enemies of the Nein thus far: 1. Dragon Turtle 2. Frost dragon that has their scent 3. Roc from the dynasty 4. Giant frost worm 5. Not to mention if the witch Jester tricked happens to get her memory back I can't wait for this all to come back on them at one time
@@dabeans5847 Four more and we have the anti-Nein 9. Unfortunately, due to copyright issues and half of them being animals, they will never coordinate with each other, but it’s the thought that counts.
Something I just noticed is that when Matt's playing an NPC that's present but not speaking, and the group is conversing among themselves, Matt stays completely in character, silent and nodding along.
I don't remember when it started, i know in Xhorhas she ate a giant spider and played it off as a "traditional" meal. And then on Rumblecusp she found a deadbug under a bed with her blanket and at the bug. And now the tower provides delicious bugs as requested. But I'm not sure at what point it became fully embraced as a joke and not a one off gag. But it is amazing.
The Potatoes saying actually exists in Swedish: "Nu har du satt din sista potatis" which literally translates into "Now you've planted your last potato" which roughly means: "Now you've gone and done it."
The whiplash of running into my mother tongue whilst catching up on comments on a critical role episode is jarring like nothing else is. Excellent note
I still imagine how Molly was watching from a distance when the worm dissapeared and reapeared 3 times, then the MN flipped a turtle over a couple of times, before yeeting it over a frozen lake and then join silently together to watch it spin around. "What are those people?"
Lucien, not Molly. I have a feeling they are 2 different souls or that Molly is the actual owner of the fabulous Tiefling body, and Lucien is a possessing entity.
@@u.s.s.chucklefucker1657 Pretty sure Molly was the best part of Lucien. All the parts where he's power hungry cultist got yeeted away from his body when Vess sabotaged the ritual leaving only a hedonistic asshole with some redeemable qualities.

I felt so terrible! The feeling as a dm is 100% a punch to the teeth by the dice and you can't really blame the players so you just sit there deflated.
Yet his mind works feverishly. "Wait there's still hope if only Laura keeps up Spirit Guardians!" Drat! Metagaming to the rescue. She drops it. "Think, Matthew, think!" How do I get this rabbit to take damage?? "Star Razor!!' Now to figure out how to attack Fjord who is all the way across the field, bypassing 3 other players without looking like absolute cheese...okay, pretend to struggle with this decision, have them roll. Then no matter what, make it work...3:37:43 voila! They never suspected a thing! *Insane laughter of the DM gods*
Lets be honest, of the moves available to her polymorph it into something harmless was probably the best move for her. Especially considering how veth didn't even snap out of stun. Since 1 snowworm attacked a party of 8 and only Jester saved its safe to assume it was not going to fall in 1 or 2 level 6 cleric spells. Also, Jester (Laura) dropping spirit guardians isn't metagaming because her character would definitely know how both spells work by this point and that the bunny would definitely revert if it took any damage. Even though the other players reminded Laura about it i feel like characters shouldn't always be a "dumb/forgetful" as the player. And the turtle totally should have reverted from cold damage in like a round or two.
He very obviously designed the tower to be exactly that sort of magical, fun place. And why he left a copy of the book in every bedroom. I love it so much!
I think the most amazing thing about this episode is that a large pinkish one eyed worm was described as "rising up" and Laura Baily had absolutely nothing to say about that.

I suspect that Kostya, Vanya and Nina were references to Chekhovs characters. Not 100% sure, so I asked Liam on Twitter, hopefully he answers :D If that's true - I'd wager all of them are references...

@@bdletoast09 It might be a homebrew. He makes small changes to almost all monsters they fight to throw off accidental and purposeful meta gaming, and sometimes just to annoy people that rules-lawyer. But of course, he make mistakes sometimes and it might definitely just be one of those. I guess that's another motive for homebrewing all monsters, making it harder to detect when he makes mistakes XD Also, he has done this for a long time and some monsters might get stale if they are always the same, though considering this was their first encounter with one and it was published in Explorer's Guide to Wildemount, the book he wrote, I'm fairly certain it's identical to the book version.
I think he actually makes plenty of changes because he plans out adventures in advance with creatures in place, but when the party arrive at whatever level they are he scales the base creature up or down (also 7 PCs throws the game massively out of whack against the design principles of a 4-person party, so you always need to homebrew if you're party size is over 5).
@@dig8634 Of course it's homebrew, as in he made it, it's from his book. The "original" purple worm from MM doesn't even have a Trill, it has a Tail Stinger which doesn't stun, it deals poison damage. But the thing is that it's not identical to the EGtW's version (frost worm) either. The EGtW says: "A creature can repeat the saving throw each time it takes damage and at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success." Also, it's supposed to be a Wisdom save, not a Constitution save (again, I'm referring to the book here). I mean, of course, he can make whatever changes he wants - we're not saying he can't. But the fact still stays, that he did indeed make some changes. And I agree with another commenter, he probably did it to upscale the worm a bit for a 7 PC + 1 NPC party, that's basically double the "intended" party size of 3-5 PCs, even though it's CR 17 and the party is level 13. Also, since we're throwing logs on fire, Matt says that the worm has -3 to Wisdom saves, when in fact it's the worm's basic Wisdom modifier. Its actual Wisdom save modifier is +3, actually.
@@johncheshirsky8822 He didn't really make it though. There is a version from 3.5, so he just adapted it to 5e, and I was aware that he changed it from the book, I thought I made that clear in my last comment? Nothing really changes from what I stated last
Did ANYBODY ELSE NOTICE how Matt put on the romance music from The Witcher 3 while Fjord and Jester were talking in the tower!? The DM ships it y'all, give in to it!
@@Silverwhite19 rightt. I just think it'd be kinda sweet considering how much they affected each other. Jester was one of the main driving forces of his character growth throughout the series and caleb was the first person who made jester kinda think about what she said when they had that talk about money and shit in front of the tavern place early in the campaign. Also, caleb kinda helped her break from her naivety. Her personality was very innocent and naive in the beginning of the campaign and while that is still kinda the case, throughout the campaign she's become a bit more mature and i think a lot of that comes from her interactions with caleb and seeing kinda how fucked he is and especially hearing about his past since she was the last person who he told and the last who knew about it in general. So hearing that and just the general air of hopelessness that caleb had throughout the beginning kind of helped her break out of her overly childish mindset. Sorry for the tangent but point is, i really think widowjest would not only be really cute but would actually make a bit of sense with the lore and whatnot.
Well I dont know. See my head is thinking that Vecna, who was only here 20 years ago, would be too selfish to allow someone else power, even as a pawn. From my own memory the only person who received a direct boost of power from Vecna was probably Arkhan. Even the Briarhearts don’t seem as strong as Lucien. Part of me thinks its just a red herring. Too easy to assume given closer interactions with two (Angel of Irons and Ukatoa).
@@WaxierWarrior Uka'toa is not a Betrayer God, he's a creation of one of the Betrayer Gods. More of a demigod, really. Like the worm and the phoenix. Speaking of which, that worm is trapped under Eiselcross somewhere, so maybe they'll run into it while exploring Aeor. :D

I'm concerned that Travis is more spot on than he realized. Especially since we already have the Tharizdun angle at play (along with his unknowing cults). That was just too on the nose for me.
@@thesaltycat9493 Yeah I have to agree. 9 eyes and 9 Betrayer Gods just seems too perfect to ve a coincidence. Perhaps Lucien ascends if he frees them?
Jester's "make sure it can still breathe!" bit was adorable, but uh. Turtles will suffocate on their back regardless, so it's really for the best that it stood up.
But also, "Maybe we should follow him?" Although, this time they seem to be understanding that they can't trust him at all, and are taking more precautions, which is good.
Critical Role was recommended to me by the RUclips algorithm sometime at the start of the year (2020) while at work, I decided to listen to them as listening to something whilst working helps keep me awake. I laughed so much during those videos they made even the worst days at work a breeze. I wanted to listen to their play-throughs only at work but I simply couldn't stay away - I needed to know what would happen next. Now, finally caught up it to date with campaign 2 it blows my mind how the characters have grown to me, even the ones who didn't stick for long (Kiri was the hardest farewell for me). I'm not big on writing comments but I wanted to share how much I appreciate Critical Role for the amazing work they do and the talented people they have inspired - the fan art is amazing and I love seeing people " bring to life " the characters and even whole scenes; reading through the comments also puts a smile on my face with all the jokes and references people make. Wishing everyone the best, stay safe during these times and keep on being this amazing, fun, kind and creative people.🍭
I also discovered critical role this year! It genuinely got me through my first year of higher studies, the hardest one, and it's been a light in darker times of quarantine and just not-feeling-well-in-general, it's really nice to see people loving the show whether they've been there for five years or just a few months, those people deserve all the love and support we can give back to the happiness they've brought us
Yeah but that man made his pretend man kiss his wife's pretend lady and now I'm so mad I have to cry and shit my pants on front of a bunch of people who don't care!
I freaking love 3 things. 1- how impatient Veth gets and tries to speed everyone up. 2- how badlyFjord wants to touch the thing, always. Question mark. 3- the increasing likelihood that the m9 will risk it and just try teleport because they’re impatient.
just gonna put it out there. Randomly came across a D & D hype video at start of the pandemic where everyone talked about this "Critical Role" thing. Was thinking to myself "i'm going into a 3 month lockdown (which turned into 6 month) might as well check this thing out on RUclips. Whether she knows it or not... Ashley giving up the four leaf clover was clutch. They can detect object, now, if they ever lose the trail or want to find them directly. Makes it way easier to travel and not have to follow behind them. I'm sure it was just a gesture of trying to remind Molly if he's still in there... But, it can have many uses. A very smart play, regardless.
That's a good point! I don't think Ashley thought that much about the clover (I actually thought she just wanted to show it, not giving it) but I really hope they utilize that.

So before I started watching CR, our DM was always furious with us because we constantly polymorphed big scary things into turtles. It wasn’t until this campaign that I was like, “This is definitely a thing. It’s not just us.” Our DM reacts to turtles the way that Fjord does and that’s a beautiful thing.
On the other hand, it is potentially their own fault. DeRogna hired a well-established party of adventurers to protect her, knowing that if she died they had *two* clerics capable of bringing her back to life (Raised Dead or Resurrection) and other than discussing it briefly initially (saying they would have to wait until the next day) they haven't even considered it since. Sure, Matt may have decided that it wouldn't work, but they could at least discuss it...
@@TheGrumbleduke The problem is that they didn't check on her imediatly because they didn't realise Lucien was taking the book from her. Which means the 10 minutes requirement for revivefy had long past since they only found out in the morning. They discussed bringing her back in this episode, the alternative is expensive and they don't know how she'll react because they now know too much.
@@jonnyso1 I think they got confused on the timings; confusing days, minutes and so on. They were way too late for 3rd-level Revivify, which is *one* minute and costs 300gp of diamonds. 5th-level Raise Dead works up to 10 days and costs a 500gp diamond (which they had some of). I think initially Taliesin's plan was to use Gentle Repose to give them time to figure out what they wanted to do, but then Laura and he confused the 10 days for Raise Dead with the 1 minute for Revivify, thought they had passed the point for Raise Dead, and were down to 7th-level Resurrection (which costs a 1,000gp diamond and has side effects). So by the time they came back to talking about it they had in their minds that it would have been a huge deal to bring her back, rather than the relatively trivial Raise Dead ritual.
@@TheGrumbleduke They weren't even really given an opportunity to save her in the first place, is the thing. Given how long it's been in the making, it's even better to watch! I remember Laura saying in an interview somewhere that she always enjoyed the romance subplots in RPGs, and Travis said openly elsewhere that he will never have a romance in D&D. Laura evidently declared to him at the start of C2 that she's going to make him fall in love with her in game, and I love that it's finally starting to happen!
@@iiayoob honestly...I dunno. To me the whole Jester and Fjord has always been a thing that’s like “well it happened cause Laura wanted it” rather than something more genuine. I love how Lucian disses Molly and Taliesin looks SOOO offended

I don't know why but I find it the most adorable thing that Matt goes "I bought a packet of turtles". Noticing a pattern with polymorph he actually went and bought a whole PACKET of TURTLE MINIS. I CAN'T.
Well the list of things they have created with polymorph this campaign (incomplete):
A cow (was still dangerous)
A red feret (died of fall damage, or the fire elemental)
Giant turtle (fjord's bane)
Painted turtle
Giant eagle/owls (party only)
Mammoths (party only)
Dire Badger (to dig)
T-rex (C-rex) (Matt should never have given them dinosaurs)
Dragon Turtle -> leather back turtle -> sea cucumber
After learning their lessons about polymorphing dragons and the like they have learned small, slow, harmless (mostly), 1hp don't touch, must privide the stat block themselves (game flow) Which means they pick a very limited number of creatures, so Matt was 10,000% justified in buying a turtle set for them, as its their favorite panicking polymorph result.
Edit: May 31, 2021
Orcas (deadliest sea mammal, not so dangerous beached in Xorhas, fun to ski behind)
Moth (1 int is bad for stealth missions)
Sheep (spoiler)
Bunny (somehow managed to revert itself with Fjords auto retaliation sword)
Various humanoids? (I feel like they used a polymorph to replace seeming once)
Cat (Jester in the Tower)
Honestly, if Matt hasn't collected mini's for every animal he can think of yet i would be surprised.

I guess that's another motive for homebrewing all monsters, making it harder to detect when he makes mistakes XD
Also, he has done this for a long time and some monsters might get stale if they are always the same, though considering this was their first encounter with one and it was published in Explorer's Guide to Wildemount, the book he wrote, I'm fairly certain it's identical to the book version.

@@jonnyso1 revivify is only usable on someone who died in the last 60 seconds IIRC
