The most Dungeons and Dragons thing ever. "Crap, the bad guy got away. Quick, half the party transform into orcas so we can water ski behind them." "I do a badass trick off of an iceberg shaped like a ramp." "Tubular!"
Just imagine how it is for Avantika, you loose your entire team fighting this group of people. Who were already and functionally directly at fault for your death, you manage to escape burning your last spell slot, and get far enough away to where you think you're probably safe before seeing a bunch of whales with the people you were just fighting bearing down on you functionally shouting "DID YOU THINK IT WOULD BE THAT EASY?"
I don't know, it's a pretty close contest between that and: "We're being stalked by a monster!" "I turn into another monster and try to flirt with it."
@@lolbenneh probably she didn't consider it to be her fight as it was contained to the deck, and she hired the nien as bodyguards so she probably said "not my problem". (She basically said this to cad when they got back, with the baggage metaphor) Also Matt either forgot about her or didn't want to make the fight any more complicated by adding another spellcaster and needing to control even more people fighting eachother. (He was already struggling a little with planning all the bad guys moves)
@@jasonreed7522 Yeah, my main thought is that everybody just forgot Vess was there because it was such an intense fight... But if they did take that into account I think that Vess would've fought, or at least supported the fight for a higher probability (of success) for the fight and for efficiency on her trip, I've watched the rest of the episodes, so I can't say much more but yeah.

I imagine a sprinkle plushie looks exactly like the time I babysat my cousin's hamsters when I was 6. One of them gave birth, ate her newborns and then fought the other adult to the death, before succumbing to her wounds.
Matt knew the party were going to be on the ship all day in a battle, and he brought the T-rex miniature to the session. He knows his players better than they know themselves.
@@uninterruptedrhythm4104 I realize you’re trying to be a smartass, but he didn’t have T-Rex minis for the Rumblecusp arc. So it’s funny after that he figured ‘oof I better get some of those since they’re gonna want to do this again’
Exactly! And that calculates to (1-0.9^10)≈65% chance of that happening! Possibly even more, since they seemingly can _loose_ days of travel if they roll something like 8.
@@Grimscribe732 Are you implying that Matt had a separate events table for every day of travel, and they could've only met Avantica if they rolled a 1 on a d10 on exactly the 5th day of their travel? I mean, that's possible, and that indeed would bring the chances to an exact 1/10 (given that there's 100% chance there will be a 5th day of travel), but in all my DMing experience that's not how random events tables work. You simply make a table and roll on it once in a period of time (in this instance, a day). There can be non-repeatable events there, but if you roll the corresponding number again, your either simply reroll the roll, of just remove the non-repeatable part of the result. Like Matt did in a previous episode, when on 4th day they rolled an 8 the second time: "Another ice channel. There is no wreckage this time, but it does add a day to the journey."
@purplerains Well, the probability of them meeting Avantica plus the probability of them _not_ meeting Avantica is obviously full 1.0, or 100% (they can't to both or neither, and those are mutually exclusive). Let's calculate the probability of never meeting Avantica in 10 days of travel. At each individual day they don't meet Avantica if they roll anything other than 1 on a d10, so on each individual day the probability of _not_ meeting her is 90% or 0.9. To not meet Avantica at all they had to simultaneously not meet her in all 10 days of their travel, all of their rolls must be 2 or more for that. As you've correctly stated, each roll is independent of other rolls, and probability theory states that if two events are independent, the first event has probability p1, the second has probability p2, then the probability of both events happening is p1*p2. So, the probability of them not meeting Avantica in both first two days of their travel is 0.9*0.9 = 0.81. The probability for first 3 days of travel is 0.9*0.9*0.9=0.729. And for the full 10 days of travel it is 0.9 to the power of 10 or 0.9^10≈0,35. And if the probability to not meet Avantica at all in 10 days of travel is 35%, then the probability of meeting her in at least on one day out of 10 days (or to roll a 1 on a d10 at least once in 10 independent rolls) is 65%
@@elecampane Except, that only accounts for the singular ‘chance to encounter Avantika’ without addressing that the repeatable encounters remained on the table, doesn’t it? The percentage chance only goes ‘up’ if everything else systemically gets removed. As a 1/10 chance in happening, it’s a 9/10 chance of _not_ happening any day, cranking the total over to 10/100 chance in a ten day journey, adjusting for additions/inflation. I’m sure I’m wrong somewhere in here, but if they had chosen a different vessel I’d guess there was a chance of more days but less ‘events,’ or if someone else had been rolling (as it had been about to switch but Travis took that last roll) it would be an event relating to them rather than Fjord. Though both of those are as much “potentials” that didn’t happen as is them having chucked the cloven stone into a desert somewhere and left it to rot in that they didn’t happen.
Alternative title: hexes, exes and sea-rexes Wow didn’t expect that. More likes than Flando feels criminal haha . Thanks everyone :) don’t forget to love each other

Caduceus: "Do you want _Create food and water_ or should I take it?" Jester: **doesn't even acknowledge he's talking** Beau (softly): "You should. The answer is: You should."
Keep in mind she was talking when he said that, plus they're all spread out for social distancing. She may not have even heard them. But either way, it was still very much a Jester moment, lol.
Jester: We can create food and water Caleb: I've got boba Cad: It'll take up a spell slot, but sure. Caleb: I've got boba. Jester: So the rations don't matter, we'll create food and water. Caleb: I've got boba. Cad: You want to add create food, or should I? Caleb: *I've got boba*
They never use that Bobba it's so annoying. As annoying as mat rolling only 15 and up for avantika's saves. He should've fudged one fail in there, It felt crazy unfair. I would've been so annoyed to be on that table that day. He could've at least fudged her save against dominate and then reveal her immunity. It just felt awful to watch this episode. And not because the fight was difficult.
@@lefterismplanas4977 I think the point of the dice is that you do what they say because it’s a game of chance as well. If he fudges this why wouldn’t he fudge to do more damage to the players later? He could kill off Caleb if he’s too strong. I mean, he can just fudge it.
@@ArthurTorrias fair Ps, let me vent for a long bit. Yoy can definitely ignore this. But I've been burned out of critical role quite a few times by now. Like, without spoilers, in c3 There's a point where everything starts to hit relentless, and Matthew just keeps refusing to pull his punches. He's a grate DM, but he's also relentless. He just doesn't know when to back down and pull his punches. His players tho accept that and that's fine, it's their table, with their rules and their fun. But that doesn't mean that I have to accept that. If I don't like critical role for some reason after watching through 2+ campaigns ? It's because at many times the world just feels relentless. And I don't know about you. But I'm watching videos to vent out, not stress out
This boat has everything: undead ex-girlfriends, giant crab monsters, several sea spawn, a group of adventurers that practically personify chaos, and a bright orange T-Rex
Caleb turning into a T-Rex is such a power move. Like just imagine thinking you are against another wizard but he turns into a fucking huge dinosaur and eats you
Laura Bailey on campaign 1: Trinket is so precious I'll make some custom armor tailored especially for him. Laura Bailey on campaign 2: I'll just jump into -2°C cold ocean water with my unprotected pet weasel.
It's Sprinkle. He'll be fine. He can't die yet, or they won't have anything to fight at the climatic battle at the end of the campaign. This is just one more time driving home just how tough he is, so that that final battle will be more dramatic, as everyone knows just how hard killing Sprinkle is gonna be.
The fact that Fjord's Divine Smite is more efficient on Avantika because she is now an undead definitely feels deliberate on Matt's end. It uses the mechanics of his multiclass into Paladin to give him an edge against her, that's thematically super appropriate, nice DMing here.
I also would not even be mad if he fudged a roll or two or Avantika's HP to let Travis have that kill, not only because it was narratively awesome by itself but also because of the fact that he was wielding a vestige.
@@MandyCummins And the fact that the killing blow against her is what exalted the Star Razor? *chief kiss* Super rewarding for Travis to best his narrative foil with the symbol of his character devlopment and have it gaining more powers thanks to it.
@@MandyCummins I've done this with my group a few times, obviously they're none the wiser. But yeah, unless it'd be worth the lulz for a powerful villain to be dropped by 1d4 from a Vicious Mockery, I make sure that CERTAIN bosses hang around on 1hp for a round or so, to make sure they're either defeated by a powerful spell, crit or just really high damage roll, or to make sure a certain player gets the kill. Some will say this is heretical perhaps. I think it's all for the end goal of making sure my players have the best time I could provide.
i love caleb’s growth, man. this episode especially. he messing around like he was the dinosaur, playing with jester as a whale, and i think the most important, giving fjord the necklace he has had with him since day one. he never took that thing off for so long. fjord and caleb’s story are so similar and yet so different at the same time. i think that’s why he gave him the necklace. i love their friendship so much. :)
Well he hasn't worn the necklace since they found it for him in vokodo's lair, Liam motioned to put it in his pocket instead of hanging it around his neck. I was wondering then why Caleb would do this, since the necklace was also protecting the Cloven Cristal, but I really liked his explanation in this episode (and let's be honest, things like the interior of bag of holdings or the vault are not at the forefront of one's mind all the time). The gesture was without a doubt quite nice, Fjord can really use this thing right now.
In a strange parallel universe sort of way, Caleb and Fjord's stories are extremely similar, aren't they? Just, one is being hunted/tormented by a strange tentacle monster hiding inside of a human suit, while the other is being hunted/tormented by a strange tentacle monster hiding inside of the equivalent of a lockbox.
@@thefracturedbutwhole5475 I have to agree. Their stories and paths are both pretty disparate, but I think thats what makes their friendship so interesting. Their mutual curiosity about the world around them and their mutual respect for each other overcomes how different they are.
I feel like each of Marisha's characters improve upon the last. I'm not caught up on S3, but Laudna is fascinating and hilarious. I am pretty sure Liam is talking about the frequency in which his origin story keeps coming up to come after them lol. Or to put it another way, Fjords backstory has been the most active amongst all of the characters. Just when you think it might be over, it just comes again and again.

@@Keith-es2xf I mean to be fair, the last time Fjord tried dropping an item of Uk'atoa's into lava...the Crystal became a part of him, and he wasn't even aware of it.
I’ve never realized how well Travis incorporates Fjord’s low wisdom. Fjord always tries to strategize with his fighting. He’s not very intuitive, and can be pretty unaware, but he’s very good at seeming confident and in control. I guess I just wanted to make a Travis appreciation Ted talk.
last time someone pointed it out like that it turned out he wasnt and turned into subtle shade at travis. its why he always points out he/fjord is forgetful
Even during the rule confusion of combat, I love how understanding everyone is. They’re respectful of calls Matt makes, and when he makes a call that they don’t agree with, they don’t get upset and make a big deal out of it. Instead, they gently “I thought...” or “Should it be this way instead?” They ask rather than demanding. And afterwards, they make sure everything’s alright before continuing and they’re still enjoying themselves. Top tier respectful group😭
I mean it is also up to matt to not fuck up rules so much. Like I cant remember the last time I needed to pull out a PHB mid game for a rule call. Idk I feel like players should have spoken up more during the Avantika fight. Because from the random shattering of Caleb's suddenly visible amber necklace to Fjord's counterpsell it felt like a lot of "dont let the rules get in the way of matt's storytelling, but make sure to hang up the group of players on every rule".
Really though, I know the Matt Mercer effect is frustrating to see (especially from sensible people who get slack for the not so sensible people), but if there's anything to take away from critical role, it's to make sure you're being a respectful player. It goes such a long way for the entire party!
@@connornunley966 That's my costant frustration with watching Critical Role. The storylines are great, but there's no reason why they shouldn't dispute things like Fjords counterspell or the mage (somehow) knowing about Caleb's necklace.
@3:38:00 travis/fjord saying "i'm not rolling those anymore" about the d10 for travel and everyone responding by calling him captain and supporting him is honestly such a subtly powerful moment, it's exactly the sort of encouragement fjord needed, it's easy to see how guilty he feels about it all and the others stepped right in and didn't give him a chance to doubt himself and now i'm crying about how much they love each other

@@cj719521 I'm gonna have to say no. Safe passage doesn't mean it worked out in the end. Safe passage means, the journey was safe, which it, in fact, was not. It was only 'safe' if you base it off a massive technicality, but the fact of the matter is, the journey was absolutely not safe.
@@ikeillue8385 but to be fair they all know going onto the sea would most likely cause this to happen be it the wild mother's blessing or not, fjord literally pissed off a god and broke his pact with that God, than you go pretty much into that gods home and think nothing is gonna happen? Man, I want an animatic of, like, this entire fight. Some standout moments: A monster running into Fjord's fog, then a spray of giblets emerging a few seconds later; Caleb falling into the fog, then emerging as a T-Rex; the entire round where everyone was just trying to get the crystal away from Avantika; and the entire underwater fight with Avantika.
The underwater fight was a cinematic master piece and I haven't even _seen_ it anywhere! The Guiding Bolt rushing past Avantica, Fjord's teleport to her, the short fight they had down there, Avantica's epic Soul Burn ability, the way she dodged Cadeuces spell and teleported away and finally... The legendary final blow Fjord got on her with his divine smite... It's... Unbelievable
The chase and the fight is honestly what I want. that would be so epic, dynamic and just a total adrenaline rush! I get so friggin invested in their game lol
Can we talk about Yasha being the unsung MVP of that combat. Like, she held off two of those damn lobsters solo and if they had entered that *mess* with Fjord and Beau that would of been completely screwed with those auto-grapples.
My favourite thing about barbarians. If a squishy character tried to 1v1 a lobster creature they could be in serious trouble. Meanwhile Yasha takes on 2 without trouble
Matt miss used them, Chuul get 2 pincer attacks and, if they have something grappled they can make a tentacle attack which poisons and paralyses them, meaning all attacks that hit auto crit. They can do this the same turn they grapple someone.
@@Ginric99 I'd say it's nearly impossible to say if a DM ever mis uses a monster. Every DM uses a different style, forgets, etc. Just like players do but even more so as we have no idea what tweaks a DM may have made to a creature. All that aside it's not like it changes the accomplishment anyway.

It's also got a human sushi bar. It's that thing, of when you turn into a T-Rex, and eat a squid guy, then regurgitate him out on the deck as you turn back into a person.
@Z3us I HIGHLY doubt Avantika is gone for good. She is almost definitely a revenant, and revenants WILL come back no matter what, even if the body is completely destroyed. Only way to stop it is to wait a year for its soul to pass, use a wish, or destroy/imprison her soul.

In retrospective, im glad they didnt all focus on Avantika, if they did she may have used Dimension Door earlier when the other enemies would still be on board - Forcing the M9 to split up or choose between saving their crew or the orb.
I have not seen far enough in the episode to know if she wasted time Fighting while she had the orb ANd could run. But if she did then that would Be a poor tactical decition. She has a mission ut takes presidence over killing traitors ANd their friends. Also when you have the choice between going after the last key that would release an evil demigod ANd saving the inocent crew of your ride. Always chose the key. Easy decition Even if your Bond is doing the right thing should never come at the expence of inocent people. Here doing the right thing would be leting avantica go, ANd the inocents paying for that would be the entire lucidian. (ANd Darktow.)

@@uninterruptedrhythm4104 I realize you’re trying to be a smartass, but he didn’t have T-Rex minis for the Rumblecusp arc. So it’s funny after that he figured ‘oof I better get some of those since they’re gonna want to do this again’
Matt: "There was only a 1/10 chance of that happening!"
Also Matt: "Roll a d10 every day for a 10 day trip"
Exactly! And that calculates to (1-0.9^10)≈65% chance of that happening! Possibly even more, since they seemingly can _loose_ days of travel if they roll something like 8.
You oversee that depending on where they are in their journey, the numbers in the dice can trigger different events.

The fact that Fjord's Divine Smite is more efficient on Avantika because she is now an undead definitely feels deliberate on Matt's end. It uses the mechanics of his multiclass into Paladin to give him an edge against her, that's thematically super appropriate, nice DMing here.

Travis is such a smart player and a beautiful roleplayer -- he's often underrated because he is so quietly consistent.
We should all aim to communicate with everyone in our lives this way
Like Travis' Counterspell which should've worked but didn't

@@HeartLockHex Just pointing out a key thing about a Chuuls attack Matt missed using, it is a mistake a lot of DM's make with Chuul. I have had to remind DM's when I have been a player it is the thing that makes them so so deadly.
