"I operate on vibes and vibes only" is a fucking excellent character summary of Dariax and also just an excellent line that I may steal next time I'm trying to describe a true/chaotic neutral character, thank you
Honestly I don't know if they were trolling her or testing her but they literally gave her nothing at sometimes it seems like the players are doing it on purpose
As a permanent DM, I absolutely love how Matt Mercer recognizes that the rest of the players are gonna go off the rails and very subtly steers the conversation back to the BIG OBVIOUS plot points and hooks as to not mentally destroy Aabria.
He literally in the first hour took a compass and made it spin on the town square to point a random direction and go there. Don't get me wrong, I love it, but he is definitely not backseating the DM. Like at all
@@dennisklomp2361 on the other hand, walking a random direction and having the DM tell you where you end up is kinda the perfect way to let them regain control of the hooks. That's how id use it anyway. But yea, I don't see Matt being the controller much here
@@jaredcarter1165 which would work, if the world was not already defined. What is north, east, or west in emon is already set in stone so you have no flexibility
@@dennisklomp2361 But you do have it. The important locations that already exist in Emon are already set in the map, sure. But not the tavern she just invented, or the nearby streets. Which means that when Matt's character picks a "random" direction through his compass (which is even just referred to as "that way", with no other indicative) Aabria gets to send them wherever she wants to. It's a specific direction for the characters, sure but not for the players or the audience, and that's where the DM gets to introduce her agency over the story.
Matt yelling in joy saying "So this is what it feels like!" When he lands the killing blow on the bad guy is absolutely so heartwarming. We need more DMs to experience what it's like to play. Most importantly the Forever DMs that always wanted to play as players.
I suspect a lot of forever DMs are forever DMs because they know they're the most capable to be doing it well. Watching other people do stuff worse than you must be kinda hard. Obviously, Mercer has the connections to know other good DMs, but a lot of DMs are probably DMs because they're most capable to helming a creative, fun campaign.
I love how Liam managed to play the only character who isn't OK with doing criminal stuff without keeping the entire party from going forward with the story, but still is making his stand in the end when that won't slow down the entire game to a halt.
This never really stuck out since she was absent a lot in C1, and she plays a low-profile character in C2. But damn. Ashley is a really chaotic player.
@@oliveri3534 And the robes with Nott in Aeor lol I think when she became able to be permanently at the table she became more comfortable doing actions that have more consequences as she knew she would be around to deal with them.
@@camclemons Hadn't gotten around to watching the first arc of C1, but that is hilariously typical in a DnD game. "Plays a neutral good cleric of light, slits people's throats".

Lmao I thought the same. I've had similar things happen, my players have missed out on several encounter maps I've spent hours on each. Super proud they avoided the combat, but so frustrated I had to try and recycle the maps now.
Haha I have an AMAZING multi-story wizards tower map that has literally sat in corner for an entire campaign after party literally walked right past it at the beginning... And then again in the next town. Originally there were different wizards towers in each area, then one of my players speculated it was the same tower, teleporting around to follow them... Now it is in the background of every outdoor scene and my players will NEVER go in:)
@@kschleic9053 😝 There's no need for you to disclose it here, but I assume you have a _reason_ it's following them? And a good reason that they'll eventually have no choice but to enter?
@@bistfump Matt is usually their Dungeon Master, what Aabria is doing if you don't know. For over 250 sessions and who knows how many one-shots, Matt was the one narrating everything and telling them "How do you wanna do this?". @@bistfump welcome! I have watched these guys for years of my life and if you ever want to go back and watch campaign one or two they are both great adventures! campaign one is so nostalgic and sort of builds this world/ you will still hear easter eggs to it even in this first episode with the mention of thordak/the cinder king. Campaign 2 is when the production value exploded and the animated show's kickstarter broke records.
funny thing is that is the correct terminology for a door on a boat. it's just callled a door it is the only thing with out a fancy name like walls are called bulkheads
“Matthew Mercer, how do you want to do this?” Maaaan, that filled my heart with so much joy to hear. Somewhere an angel got its wings… as elsewhere the hisser died a violent death.
He also has prolly wanted someone else’s to drive the “boat” of the sessions and let him play more in his world. He’s prolly spent so much time behind the scenes that he wanted to play a character who just lays back and is vibin the whole time
@@anamariefalk3796 seriously same thoughts here! I am almost to episode 50 of C3 and it is insane to see Fearne be one of the more in the middle characters of a group

Really nice to see Ashley so involved. She seemed a little withdrawn in TMN, probably because Yasha was such a quiet character - so it's lovely to see her so animated with a lively and lovely character
Yee, common thing for people who dm more than play, actually. Well, the good ones, anyway. I do the same myself. I never make a party face or leader or anything like that.
Yup this way he doesn’t have to know anything beyond his name etc and see where the new dm goes with the lore (and probably talking with her in private for when she goes completely against the lore that’s already out there)
@@storyteller3036 Because DnD is not about min maxing stats and oneshotting bosses, sure it can be fun but some of the best moments come from the failures and flaws of the players. Matt's created a lovable f*ckup that he can take a backseat with, enjoy the ride and not take it too seriously. Idk if it's been said but I really like how she opened up with having everyone do class related rolls. Also keeping everyone active by asking for a lot of checks. I'm enjoying it so far
@@ReiSilver I did that as a baby DM and I should say, it's a good idea to have your players practice the whole process of rolling + search the character sheet for the bonus + math, BUT my mistake there was not explaining the in-game reason for the checks well enough and also caring too much about consistency between the total value rolled and the effect you describe. It's always better to make for amusing moments than to have a clear distinction in what happens with a performance roll of 16 as opposed to "just" a 14
@@TheSilverPhoenix100 It's not that bad. Investigation and Arcana checks tend to be quite important and there are many subclasses which make good use of it. + you can always just change the spellcasting abilities of other classes into intelligence.

They seem so different, then Frearne says "time is a wierd soup" and I think maybe she'd get on with Yasha "I killed my whole family, I'll throw you under a bridge" Nydoorin
It's so tempting as a DM to push exposition and narrative in spite of failure, in some way or another. I love that Aabria just let them flounder a little on the terrible rolls, before bringing it back.
Just wanted to mention that Mister as a Wildfire Spirit has inteligance of 13 which is as high as Orym, the most inteligent member of our chaotic crew XD

As a permanent DM, I absolutely love how Matt Mercer recognizes that the rest of the players are gonna go off the rails and very subtly steers the conversation back to the BIG OBVIOUS plot points and hooks as to not mentally destroy Aabria.
Glad to hear I’m not the only one in that position, and that I’m not the only one to notice him doing that.

@@dennisklomp2361 on the other hand, walking a random direction and having the DM tell you where you end up is kinda the perfect way to let them regain control of the hooks. That's how id use it anyway. But yea, I don't see Matt being the controller much here

Obviously, Mercer has the connections to know other good DMs, but a lot of DMs are probably DMs because they're most capable to helming a creative, fun campaign.

Hello!
I love how Liam managed to play the only character who isn't OK with doing criminal stuff without keeping the entire party from going forward with the story, but still is making his stand in the end when that won't slow down the entire game to a halt.
He's basically the only compass in the show
This never really stuck out since she was absent a lot in C1, and she plays a low-profile character in C2.
But damn. Ashley is a really chaotic player.
Towards the end we got to see how she rivals Travis in amount of "Hit the Red Button" energy she gives off. Like the three books left in that library.
@@oliveri3534 And the robes with Nott in Aeor lol I think when she became able to be permanently at the table she became more comfortable doing actions that have more consequences as she knew she would be around to deal with them.

Funnily, irl oily bacon would be better than sugery honey on an instrument
Honey would be the worst thing.
Me, an actual floutist: (dieing inside bc sugary substances are gonna be so bad for your instrument, while my lizard brain and logic brain try to convince the rest of me that it's high fantasy and D&D logic and it's ok bc his flute probably doesn't have padding or cork bc for heaven's sake it's a hollowed out ax handle and if it DOES have cork it prolly needed a good greasing anyway and ....pork fat) I'm........*conflicted*
maybe I'm to sexual but sounds like. Honey as in female fluids and flute as in male you know and bacon lips well meat-

Loved the moment at 54:38 when Ashley rolled an 8 and got a bit of a reaction from the DM. Liams response was great, "The impartial voice of god, whooo" Just such a perfect dnd moment.
There are like 8 brain cells between them and I fucking love it.
4 of them are shared between the halfling and the monkey. XD

Mad Props to the DM for explaining to Opal what Dariax was REALLY asking.
I can’t help it guys Ashley’s Fearne voice is so soothing

Fearne would be excellent at just slightly disturbing ASMR

The "infiltrating the ship" part had real "using scrambled eggs as a ruse at the hospital" bit from Campaign 2 vibes.

He’s playing “impatient”. Once he gets his mind headed in a certain direction, that’s where he’s headed.
@@ForeverWog And that is some wordplay with the word 'head' right there. But you're making a good point. He plays him 'impatient' & 'impulsive'.
For me, Liam O'Brien's halfling is channeling Martin Freeman's Bilbo Baggins from the Hobbits films. He is the sensible one bemused, bewildered and exasperated by the antics of his new companions and showing it all with his silent facial expressions. Love it!
more exasperated by the weakness of the plot and the zero reason for the party, specifically for his character, to join the inexistent, nonsensical "mission"
@@RPCauldron bro it was the first episode we have no background story yet
@@RPCauldron They played a few sessions off camera (stated in the teaser), and it seems like those sessions might have been in-setting given references in session 1 and the rapport they seem to already have. They rolled pretty terrible for most / all of the plot hooks so we might have missed some insights into those early sessions. It is only the first episode. We might have gotten some hints at his motives since he kept referencing a mysterious “her”. I personally like the lack of exposition dumps in ep 1, but I’m one of those masochistic Malazan fans.
CAMPAIGN 1 SPOILERS

Got halfway through ep92 of c3 and realised I could not continue without knowing everything that went down in Emon prior to the start of the campaign. So here I am! To anyone else in the same boat, godspeed 😅
I got to the middle of episode 2 of c3 (I’m doing a major catch up) and after several references to the EXU series I was like nah I need to understand the characters/backstory before I continue 😅
I have yet to start C3 and I’m so glad I’ve started this first 😂
Here before starting c3 and happy to hear it was a good idea. 👍

I like it though! He's a very pleasant counterbalance to the madcap antics of Dariax and Opal.

It helps when you have multiple levels of bard in real life and most of your points went into oratory.

Which makes sense because Robbie has a toddler.
