“And most of them are decent enough, there just trying to make a living” That’s one of my favorite things about MIB, it goes out of its way to say that most aliens aren’t evil.
They may all not be evil but we find out in MIB2 that there are a lot of them on the planet who are up to no good. Jeebs for one. The Ballchinian and his friends for others.
I love when K got asked "Is it worth it?" He immediately answered "it's worth it" probably because of what he's done as an MIB, but then followed up after a brief pause "if you're strong enough" because he throught about it from J's perspective and knew for a newbie it would be difficult to adjust.
He knew it was worth it because he has been a part of MiB for decades. He knew how much it takes from you because he gave up those decades being with his wife for the sake of keeping humanity safe from hostile aliens.
2:50 the novelization added this. “You put a bunch of people together and you spook them, what you have is a mob. And a mob is only as smart as its dumbest member.”
Ive been saying a person is smart but people are dumb for years. Couldve sworn that was just my own observation bit its possible I just absorbed K's wprds unconsciously. Im so confused.
"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it. " A line that sticks with me every time I see a crowd reacting to something, no matter what it is.
This reminds me of Loki. People want to be controlled. People say they want freedom but in reality they don’t. People want to be told what to do. Everyone has a dream but very few actually chase their dream.
It's imperative to remain a person, and not part of a crowd. We all need community, but do not let yourself be merely part of a group. We were created as individuals and we are responsible to God and Man for our own actions. Don't let others do your thinking, and don't let other others disrespect your individualism and force you into their mold. When LGBrandon says, if you don't vote for me, "you ain't black", that's exactly what he's doing to you. When you label people according to their color and not their character, you let them define you and to them you become "people" and not a person. God sees you as an individual.
3:45 - 4:15 I like moments like this where the protagonist is given time to think over a life changing decision, it shows that they take the matter seriously. Nowadays in movies the protagonist instantly makes the decision without thinking about it.
Exactly ! He would have got up the second everybody expected him to. 3:57 is the exact moment recent films would have made the character run after K "Oh hey come back ! I made up my mind" Instead, he breaths out like any real person might do. Great, simple stuff. It takes 20 seconds and it's more impactful than a lot of other scenes

K's quote about a person vs people really is one of the most important lessons of all time. It's not just a good sounding quote, it's one of the most useful thought processes to keep in mind at all times if you're dealing with either 1 person or multiple people in any given circumstance.
Yea man that line resonated with me since i first heard it in 97 and i was only 12 at the time but what K says it's absolutely correct...some people look at this classic as just a comedy but it also holds some powerful messages as well and i think that's something that most classic comedies(like Trading Places or Friday) have

@Sheerluck Holmes I couldn’t think of anything more stupid. “Hey guys, let’s get rid of all politicians save for one so that they can rule over us in a dictatorship!” You’re the “people” K was talking about.
The fundamental problem isn't that people are stupid. People are dangerously smart, they've just been conditioned to not stop and think about what they're doing. They're taught from the start that we need ACTION and we NEED IT NOW and if you ever hesitate you're A SLOW HELPLESS WEAKLING So they never really question the beliefs they already hold. Restricting knowledge helps nobody, the actual flaw is that we're missing a vital component of education: critical analysis and self-assessment.
@@nickmalachai2227 would have to disagree. People are not inclined to lean towards the truth of the matter as much as they are the general populace of a belief. But an individual by himself and think logically and make a decision based off what is right without that influence
"Cab drivers." "No, not as many as you'd think." I always loved how quick K's reply to that was, and how knowing as well. Like it's SUCH an obvious observation that he answers more or less reflexively.
I think it also had to do with the presumption that many cab drivers in 90s New York were immigrants, so making the further guess that they are even more alien would be what the average person would think if they knew aliens were on Earth.
That's Agent K, pointing out the difference between the psychology of the _individual_ and the psychology of the _crowd._ A sterling bit of wisdom I didn't know I _needed_ when I first saw this movie.
Damm, you said 24 years later. This movie was released in 1997 my year of birth can't believe I'm 24 now, still I think myself of some 18 19 yr old kid
I just love the idea that K just randomly stumbled into this life of constant looming apocalypses and desperate last second saves in an endless and thankless struggle and became the best at it because he just got lost one night.
I confess it was very late in my life that I realized that the scene implies that the "one dumb kid who got lost on the wrong back road" K mentions...is K himself.
All good points but i'm hard pressed to think of another actor of the time that could have made this movie's humor work, Jones' unique brand of deadpan delivery is perfect for the dry humor and the parts where a little somberness/seriousness is required, he was the ideal actor for the role. So yes, a film is always a team effort but TLJ is the anchor that keeps this movie from becoming slapstick and elevates it to something "legitimate" and with a lil more depth than expected, whereas other (maybe none) actors may not have been able to pull this off
"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals and you know it." This is one of those quotes that drives my way of thinking. Don't let yourself get caught up in the crowd.
Friend of mine is a commercial fisherman. I asked him once how he knows where to fish. First thing he said, "Well, you can follow the crowd, but the crowd is wrong. And even if the crowd is right, then you have to share with the crowd." Applicable to a lot of endeavors.
@@tuilleri to answer the meaning behind it. You can talk to a person 1 on 1 and they can understand and try and listen and follow what you are saying, but when you try to talk to a group they are more likely to not listen and give into a mob mentality. So if 1 dumb person starts to panic or make a scene a few more people are likely to and when a lot of people are panicking, everyone will panic. So a singular person can be smart, but a group of people is as dumb as the dumbest person in the group. As for the second part for applying it in buisness, he was saying if you follow the group it's only going to end bad or little success, whereas if you do your own thing you either are going to have no success or have great success. Like if a group of buisnessmen open fast food in an area of town, following In Their footsteps will either lead you to fail if everyone else fails, or only moderate success because everyone else has a fast food place. Now if you opened an actual restaurant instead of fast food, you still have the possibility to fail, but if you succeed you are much more likely to succeed greatly. Either way you have a chance of failure, but doing your own thing and going your own way you are more likely to find great success
My favorite soliloquy of that whole series of movies: "1500 years ago, everybody knew the earth was the center... Imagine what you'll know... tomorrow." A very cynical but accurate celebration of rationality.
Exactly. What we "know" is only temporary. Not only because our existence is only temporary, but because our understanding of reality as a species is constantly changing. On an individual level, it still applies, because our opinions on almost everything is constantly changing. What we "know" at 16, is very different to what we "know" at 30
Partially accurate. He said "500 years ago, everyone knew the Earth was flat" The ancient Greeks figured out the Earth was round in the 5th century BC (about 2,500 years ago). The idea that it was widely believed that the Earth was flat not that long ago is a total myth.
@@thefaithslayer2553 Beat me to it. Even ignoring the Greeks, sailors (and probably anyone near the shore who had thought about the question) had long since realized it couldn't be flat given ships appeared to dip below the horizon.
@@thefaithslayer2553 Yeah true I was like what the hell. It was more like the other way around, it could be said that the average person 1500 years ago thought the earth was flat because it was the dark middle ages and all that. And 500 years ago makes sense for the whole debate between Galileo and the church about the earth or the sun being in the center of the cosmos. So I think some writer mixed the two up somewhere, or Tommy lee jones messed up in the scene but that’s very unlikely
"and one dumb kid who got lost on the wrong backroad" all these years, I never realized K was talking about himself--- I though J's joke was just that...a joke.
When all they left the guns in the table, J is the only one that double checks the safety is on. Also, K never mentioned that he was the lost kid that offered the alien the flowers, but J recognized him immediately.
What were the deeper meanings? The one good thing the movie did was prove how important framing is. A black guy was able to shoot a little white girl in the head, because of framing. But considering what is said to him later, this should have failed him as a candidate.
Imagine being in his position: probably losing your mum and dad, best friends, siblings, nieces and nephews, grandparents etc. Such incredible writing having him sit there in silence for so long.
The thing is, it's difficult to imagine his position because we don't know if he has any of those. Because his social life is blank, it's easy to assume perhaps he gave up very little socially. He doesn't appear to have anything to miss after he joins.

I love this scene for an entirely different reason: this was New York at its peak. Late 90s, economy doing well, crime down, subways working, before it was turned into a tax shelter for despots, and the original WTC stood still. It was the best time to be in New York.
It's the little details that make this scene. Like the fact all the military guys just lay their guns down, yes with trigger discipline and not sweeping anybody, but still with the kind of carelessness caused by too much familiarity. Meanwhile at 0:19 J checks that his is empty before putting it on the table. Just that extra hint that beneath the attitude and act is a highly conscientious and intelligent man.
J didn't check anything, he just glances at the back of the gun. That doesn't give you any useful information about whether or not a round is chambered.

It _does_ have a decocker lever, though (note the exposed hammer on the back). Using that would render the gun safe-ish, but not really safe. It's a double action, so there's that extra pull on the trigger for the first shot, but...that wouldn't stop it from being fired at all.
When I was a kid I thought K was being serious about people knowing the earth was the center of the universe and flat bit. Mainly because I saw the word "knew" as absolute. I'm glad I can appreciate the depth of what he meant now as an adult and that what we think we know isn't the full picture.
I said it before back when I was 14 and I will say it again: “You can have the healthiest eyes ever but still be blind to the truth.” I learned that through experiencing abuse.
Well considering that they passed him even though he shot the kid, when I was young it made sense but these days I know that he should have failed and the others should have passed.
Technically humans figured out the earth was round first, figuring out that the earth wasn't the center of the universe was far more recent. Well, some people knew, but the Roman inquisition threatened to torture Galileo for spreading the "heretical idea" that Earth wasn't the center of the universe in the 17th century- less than 500 years ago.
It’s a beautiful scene especially with what came before it. And I love they show J really thinking about it. Cutting ties with everyone you’ve ever known and stepping across that threshold is terrifying. Not knowing what’s beyond that dark first step and not having a way back. I’m honestly surprised the MIB have so many members with the kind of sacrifice they have to make
It sounds kinda intriguing…,..sometimes certain people just become so outcasted that it really doesn’t matter to get close to anyone anymore…..and believe it or not these people can still care from a distance even if that means never getting close to anyone ever again. The outcasted child doesn’t always burn down the village. Sometimes the outcasted child continues to love even if it’s not reciprocated. It’s similar to how the Jedi order worked in Star Wars. Jedi weren’t allowed to date or get too attached to anyone. It was always about balance. Everyone’s balance is different. Certain people can do just fine alone. Humans may in fact be social beings but one doesn’t necessarily have to get close to others to be social. I’m not saying J was outcasted but I am saying that people can and have cut ties with everyone they knew before and it’s not always so obvious why but at the end of the day we’re all just individuals with our own choices and preferences.
"You get to meet extra terrestrials, but you're never allowed to become close with another human being." Geeky Introverts: I see this as an absolute win!
I have two favourite quotes. Edgar saying "the only thing that pulls any weight around here is my God dam truck! Figures." And Agent J "you know what the difference is between you and me? I make this look good." 😎

This is a solid quote. It's often stated that people are dumb, but this highlights the intelligence of a singular person removed from that ignorant crowd.
"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals." I saw this movie when it came out, and this quote has stuck with me. I have seen this quote be proven over and over and over again. This movie will never not be relevant.
Timeless classic, timeless cast, timeless duo. I love everything TLJ and Will Smith, but I will forever argue this is some of their best work in this series of movies.
That quote has always stuck with me since I first heard it. And damn is it true. An individual will accept things better than if you put that same person in a group and they will be swayed by the pack mentality more often than for fear of being an outcast and afraid to think for themselves. Tommy and Will were a fantastic pairing for these films.
I never fully grokked the "a person is smart, people are dumb panicky dangerous animals" line until COVID started. Like, yeah, I recognized some truth to it when I rewatched this movie as a teenager, but it wasn't until 2 years ago that I actually understood it.
Of course, those people who like to think they're the only ones going against the crowd are often, in reality, part of a pretty large group of people who are catching people up in their own panic and hysteria
Actually its proven in history that many believed the earth was round they just couldn't scientifically prove it. Edit: My bad folks when i typed this i meant proven through modern day technology. Yes the bible mentions this fact and some historical figures after the bible books that make mention of this also proved it. The earth was proven round thousands of years ago. Just remember my initial comment is quite vague so insulting me or saying i dont know what im talking about is kinda pointless as its a vague comment.
In the pantheon of profound quotes from great philosophers and comedians throughout all human history, the quote 'a person is smart, people are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals' is my favourite, beating out half of ancient Greece and 1970's era Robin Williams
A couple of things these scenes do well: 1. When K is explaining to J what MIB is K picks up on Js skepticism/sarcasm when he says” aww you brought that tall man some flowers”. He proceeds to then reinforce what he’s telling J by showing him the creatures in the coffee room to show J it’s real instead of just pictures in a folder. 2. He uses the chronological events of earth being the center of the universe, the earth being, flat and “15 minutes ago you knew humans were alone on this planet”. 3. He confirms Js knowledge of how a person is smart but a group of people are stupid and panicky. 4. “Imagine what you’ll know tomorrow” is a tactical line used to spark Js curiosity. Finally, #5, he instigates Js ego by telling him it’s worth it only “if you’re strong enough”, challenging Js competitive nature and giving him an itch to prove that he is indeed strong enough. Very strong scenes.
Literally when this movie came out we still considered Pluto a planet. We hadn't had net positive energy from nuclear fusion. You can 3D print most of a gun. In the palm of your hand you have the entirety of human kinds' knowledge whenever you want it. "Imagine what WE'LL KNOW" tomorrow"
The MiB as this entirely apolitical organization dedicated to the peaceful refuge and settlement of all peoples of the universe makes this commitment worth it. You might never be remembered on Earth, but your actions will be remembered throughout the stars.
3:16 -- "The catch? The catch is you will sever every human contact; nobody will ever know you exist, anywhere...ever." Probably one of the saddest lines in MiB. The man who is now Agent K; he was once a boy on his way to a date, with a bouquet of flowers for his girl. But, an alien ship landed near his walking path to her house. Instead of giving his bouquet to his date, he had to instead give it to an alien diplomat. He then became K. He never got to date his girl. She grew up without him and lived her life somewhat normally. (We see this when K is using the satellite to look at her.) And even after leaving the MiB, he can't reunite with her; they're too different. K becomes the postmaster for a small town after retirement from the MiB, all because he's too broken to live a normal life in a normal way. He then has to be taken back into service because he can't hack it as a civilian. And as far as I know, K never left the MiB after that. I haven't watched MiB: International, so I don't know if they referenced K's passing in that movie.
I think Terry Pratchett once said something along the lines of "a crowd has the IQ of its dumbest member divided by the number of people in that crowd."
"Imagine what you'll 'know' tomorrow". I always read this simply as "imagine what new exciting discoveries are coming in the future", but the emphasis on "know" makes me realise it's more about self-assured ignorance/complacency. Like: "imagine the next thing you'll soon be so sure of you can't possibly fathom the deeper reality that lies even beyond that, waiting to be realised". It's quite profound, really.
I've long thought that K's observation about the difference between a Person and People is one of the most insightful lines a Science Fiction movie has ever produced. Master Class delivery by TLJ, too.
This film, despite being a comedy - really hits home a few times. This scene being one of them. Fantasticly written and delivered, hauntingly realistic. Bravo.
Having a movie be entirely humorous is called bad writing. You need serious moments in order to punctuate the comedy and give the audience breathing room.

I haven’t seen this movie since I was a kid. Now I have to rewatch it, purely because this sequence alone is so much better than I remember it. Moments of brilliant satire (“…what we’ve come to expect from years of government training”), a brilliant blend of the mundane and the wondrous, the great chemistry between Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, and the latter’s mix of gravitas and resignation that so perfectly fits the character. Great stuff.

Just like George Carlin said. "The individual is beautiful. The individual is wonderful to meet and a delight to get to know. Its groups that are the problem"
When I heard him say "A person is smart. People are dumb irrational panicking animals and you know it. " I thought about it. I was real young when it dropped but every time I read about a group of people doing something, they usually get together and find a reason to either hate or fear someone or something else. "A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it. "
A line that sticks with me every time I see a crowd reacting to something, no matter what it is.

People are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals and you know it."
This is one of those quotes that drives my way of thinking. Don't let yourself get caught up in the crowd.
What’s the meaning
Friend of mine is a commercial fisherman. I asked him once how he knows where to fish. First thing he said, "Well, you can follow the crowd, but the crowd is wrong. And even if the crowd is right, then you have to share with the crowd." Applicable to a lot of endeavors.
@@netpackrat how can I apply this in business

An individual will accept things better than if you put that same person in a group and they will be swayed by the pack mentality more often than for fear of being an outcast and afraid to think for themselves. Tommy and Will were a fantastic pairing for these films.
K looks “older” in these photos than he does in 1969’s MiB 3 (lol).
I personally just like this first one as a stand-alone film anyway.
I always watched this movie when I was younger. This scene where they're at the bench now reminds me of how the world we lived in no longer exists.
The "people are dumb, dangerous, panicky animals and you know it." line is the most truest statement ever uttered!
And two decades forward, that line is still relevant, and accurate as hell.
I never fully grokked the "a person is smart, people are dumb panicky dangerous animals" line until COVID started.
Like, yeah, I recognized some truth to it when I rewatched this movie as a teenager, but it wasn't until 2 years ago that I actually understood it.
I doubt that this movie's writers imagined that line being used as a justification for science and vaccine denial, but here we fucking are.
@@jackal59 It is? Fuuuuuck.
Of course, those people who like to think they're the only ones going against the crowd are often, in reality, part of a pretty large group of people who are catching people up in their own panic and hysteria
I've visited New York enough to know that subtle dig "why else would we hold it in Queens" lol
The fact K pretends to get some coffee just to prove J was wrong to not take it seriously just got me 😅
500 years ago everybody knew the earth was flat and 500 years later some people still think earth is flat
I was thinking that too lol
@@krombopulosterry1005 It was as proven as it could be, by the curve of the horizon and its curved shadow on the moon.
I just remind the flat earthers and how does a solar eclipse happen exactly again.......?

In the pantheon of profound quotes from great philosophers and comedians throughout all human history, the quote 'a person is smart, people are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals' is my favourite, beating out half of ancient Greece and 1970's era Robin Williams
This movie stuck with me for decades.
Imagine what you'll know... tomorrow.
.
One of the best lines
“Imagine what you’ll know tomorrow.” Such a killer line delivery.
2:54 - One of the silliest movies ever made with one of the most profound quotes to ever grace the screen.
3:16 -- "The catch? The catch is you will sever every human contact; nobody will ever know you exist, anywhere...ever."
Probably one of the saddest lines in MiB.
It's a movie but how can you just erase someone existence
Fun fact. The aliens in this scene are speaking huttese the same fictional language spoken by Jabba the Hutt and the rest of the Hutts from Star Wars.
I like to think its actually huttese adopted by these aliens while theyre living on earth.
I think Terry Pratchett once said something along the lines of "a crowd has the IQ of its dumbest member divided by the number of people in that crowd."
That sounds very accurate.
I always loved that he sits on that bench all night. Because after learning something that detrimental...you have literally nowhere else to be
After watching MIB3, it's crazy to think K had J's life planned out.
I think most people pretend the sequels never happened
@@Primenumber19 I enjoyed part 3. Part 2, not so much.
Most real scene in the whole franchise
I love how the alien say "ah shit" when he over pours the coffee
This film, despite being a comedy - really hits home a few times. This scene being one of them. Fantasticly written and delivered, hauntingly realistic. Bravo.
Having a movie be entirely humorous is called bad writing. You need serious moments in order to punctuate the comedy and give the audience breathing room.

I’ve always loved this line. Knowledge isn’t a state, it’s a process. 🙏
"Gentlemen...Congratulations. You're everything we've come to expect from years of government training." Just now, years after seeing this movie, it finally occurs to me that this might not have been intended as a compliment! ~Slaps forehead.~
Loved K's smile @1:35 when James said he needed another CAT scan.
One of my earliest memories is watching this on VHS constantly as a kid, I was born in 1997 right before this came out

In Russian dub, K says "Sit and think on it" (a common expression in Russian), and J literally just sits through the whole night thinking.
The second most profound and true thing I've heard about people in a movie, and it comes from a goofy film about secret agents and aliens.
The 90s must have been a fun time to be alive for cinema
When I heard him say "A person is smart. People are dumb irrational panicking animals and you know it. " I thought about it. I was real young when it dropped but every time I read about a group of people doing something, they usually get together and find a reason to either hate or fear someone or something else. Since then I've kept to myself more. I was scared to be a part of the "People " K was talking about. And it's worked out so far. Few friends and safe distance from associates without being a complete shut in.
4:07 - That was me on Dec 27, 1997. My group was eating Veg Pizza and I sat on the bench outside.

This rings even more true in 2024.
K's "Everybody knew" speech is one of the best lines in movie history IMO.
The weight after that speech: imagine what you’ll know, tomorrow…?
