- Today's video is gonna be a bit different. I'm taking you on a journey to one of the most heartbreaking places in history: the Hellfire Pass in Kanchanaburi, Thailand. This spot is a part of the Death Railway, where countless Prisoners of War lost their lives during World War II.
I woke up bright and early in Kanchanaburi and headed straight for the Hellfire Pass. I knew it was going to be a tough day emotionally, but I wanted to share this important piece of history with all of you.
Join me as I explore the Hellfire Pass, learn about its significance, and pay my respects to those who suffered there. It's a somber but important experience, and I hope you'll come along for the journey.

My Grandfather was a U.S. airman that was shot down during WW II. He was sent to a POW camp in Thailand. The suffering he endured there was horrendous. He very rarely spoke of it, but he told me once that his Japanese captors considered him a lessor man because he was captured and didn't die for his country. That haunted him until he died.

He didn't know I had married a wonderful Thai lady until I took my wife to meet him in England.
First time I ever saw him cry, told me that the local Thai people would find a way to feed him and his mates....

So as the Jewish people who survived hitler my father inlow was abble to sit in the aftrnoon for hours not noticing how much time escaping from him he would never talk about how he lust his grandfather and father. And now we are in the bigest "war "of all the 20-21-22 Its keep repeting its just getting biger and more money 💰

I've always been welcomed by the locals of Kan. I think this is one of the reasons why. They are aware of those horrendous events that took place 80+ years ago and there is a special kind of respect amongst the locals ,whom had relatives that perished. It is harrowing there Wayne, i visited on one Anzac anniversary year it was very moving, we where down in hellfire pass before dawn it was all lit by candles, it was a haunting vision, then when we returned back up top there was a large projector screen which we watched archived footage. When we got back to the main Kanchanabury road going down to the bridge it was one big get together, beers where flowing, tables full of food and lots of the senior Australian soldiers dressed so smart with there medals, friends meeting friends it was great. Very emotional and respectful video. Guessing you are now glad you chose the diversion to your travels to visit this city. Not your usual upbeat content, but so necessary to visit tragic sites like this to make you think about horrific events in history. This place, like Cambodias Killing Fields and Auschwitz left me walking away a different person. Everybody that can, should visit these places to get a perspective of how ugly the world can often get. Excellent video, Wayne.

One cannot fathom thousands of young men, most in their early 20's, being worked to death. Perhaps it is best that we cannot comprehend such a thing. RIP to all these brave young lads, who never had a chance to grow up.

The hairs stand up on the back of your neck and you can definitely feel the presence of the fallen.

The last time I was there I had a surreal experience. Where the black memorial stone is parts of the surrounding forest was on fire and deep in the valley miles away I could clearly hear a monk chanting, Yes it certainly does get to you, once more in Kanchanaburi district I was in tears ...

As an Australian who was at Hellfire Pass this passed January24 this vlog has brought back so many emotions and sitting here at midnight in the comfort of my home and watching this I now once again have tears running down my cheeks.....As I walked along the same path in January and reaching the cutting I tried to imagine what it must have been like for those prisoners it was truly a solemn moment....If there is a "Hell on Earth " than at that time this was surely it for all those that were on this railway construction line....May God bless them all....RIP...........This vlog was amazing thankyou Wayne for bringing this to us..Keep up the great work and enjoy the rest of your travels stay safe mate.🙏🙂

Wayne this was very moving. Being a Veteran myself as was my father and Grandfather I did not realise that 13 Kiwis died here in hell's pass along with many more British Australian and American service men. On the 25th April ANZAC Day each year here in New Zealand and Australia we recite the following ode. " They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them." thanks mate

Thanks Wayne for an amazing walkabout. The currency of human life used to complete this project is unimaginable. I wonder if those responsible were held to account or not ? The terrain beyond the memorial seems too steep for a railway . Can’t See how a train could get through. The rocks cry out with the voices of those who perished . Heavy atmosphere. The place demands respect and flippant behaviour not appropriate.

My art teacher at my school in london from 71 to 76 was one of those brave men. His name was mr Warren and he was all bent over on his back. Must have been from having to carry heavy loads. He was also in Singapore and did some famous paintings in a cave to cheer up the other prisoners. There is a book about him. Rip Stanley Warren a lovely kind man

I was in Kanchanaburi in February this year, I was in the hotel right beside the bridge , the bridge is original, although it was bombed by the allies and 2 of the support was blown up but later replaced, the other original wooden bridge is a few hundred metres away situated at the museum, the so called prisoner of war camp is false, I was talking to one of the tourist police and Australian who has lived there a while who informed me that the camp is false and the real camp is situated a few miles away near the military cemetery. Kanchanaburi is such a beautiful place and a must to visit and remember the sacrifices of those who were there.
That's right, you can still see the bomb damage on the bridge Pilars. Yep, the camp is fake and used as a bar area in the past, which I didn't agree with. Kanchanaburi is a special place. I met the Australian guard also 👍

My favourite vlog from u thus far Wayne. Thank u for taking me through this tribute through your camera. I did not have the privilege of visiting this place during my stopover in kanchanaburi due to time constraint (was on a motorbike and got rained on 3 separate occasions throughout the day). I ate at the same petrol station too but patronised the shop on the left instead, very decent pad Krapao.

Sad place Wayne, good video though - i just wanted to add a bit of positive info. There was a Aussie Doctor/Surgeon by the name of Ernest Edward Dunlop (Nick named "Weary" ) who looked after 1,000 POW's with a few other doctors in the Prison camp , he often put himself between a prisoner and the Japanese that were going to Bayonet the Pow, he wrote a book " The War Diaries Of Weary Dunlop" Java And The Burma - Thailand Railway 1942-1945, he was a Tough man played Rugby and was a Champion Boxer who stood 6'4"., He must have saved dozens of mens lives, he was Knighted for his brave work but not until 1969. i remember a Lady who was his secretary saying that Weary didn't Bill/Charge ex serviceman who came for a Consultation. He had a big Heart.

I just did the full walk Sept 9th 24 and the difference is huge in regards to the greenery. I did the full walk and it gets more intense, just remember the rock had to be hand drilled or hammer and tap before the dynamite could be used, you can see these marks from the drills all along the wall. Its a very emotional journey. Dont underestimate the full walk I came back drenched and only had sturdy thongs, but the men were in in barefeet that worked and died here. I agree totally about the lack of respect from some people on the pass. Its a placweto reflect not just get selfies and laugh.
