  • One of the main reasons for the success of the D-Day landings was the element of surprise, the incredibly huge invasion force, gathering along the south coast of England, went undetected by the services German intelligence. Hitler's generals thought the stormy weather meant it would be mission impossible, and it almost did.

This documentary departs from the typical by its emphasis on intelligence and secrecy. It is good to note they mention the sequestering of certain men via barbed wire. This emphasis was quite a departure from many other similar documentaries. The music was a bit maudlin at times though. Otherwise most excellently done.the

So they’re going to skip over the fact that “A young British Officer mentioned Operation Overlord to his parents and they felt it was their duty to report him to the Home Office and Military Command” I love how the narrator just blew over this like it wasn’t even in the closed caption this is exactly why I watch all videos with it on because you never know what’s being changed or what you’ll learn smdh one thing is for sure this tells me I’m watching a British dubbed narrated documentary without explicitly saying it because they removed the single most embarrassing situation about one of their personnel and families while leaving everything else in about others it’s absolutely shameful

Monte was supposed to to take Caen day one but would not commit the armor he had. He always attacked when numbers were heavily in his favor. I doubt that the allies could have held it. The Germans knew the value of that town. Thank heavens that Hitler did not listen to Rommel . If the German tanks were by the coastal defenses of Normandy the invasion may have failed. The weather of those few days was tough on air support..
