I am making 2021 my year of refresh. No more cheap clothing that I end up not liking after a few wears and I don't want to even think about the money I wasted.
I got rid of 4 large bags of clothes about 5 months ago and today I filled another bag full. All dated and uncomfortable and cheap. Now that I’m 45 I decided to purchase better quality items even it’s it’s 1-2 pieces at a time. No more cheap, unnecessary clothes. Thank you for the tips.

I agree. The t-shirts I used to buy 18 years ago from the same company was of amazing quality, then 10 years ago it was ok, but nothing like it used to be, two years ago it was so awful that I had to stop buying it from them. I’m pretty brand loyal, but had to stop buying things from my favourite brands as the quality had gone down so much. I would rather spend a bit more and have the same quality they used to have.
Thank you so much for this Lizzie. I often feel guilty about clothes I've spent money on and never worn so thanks for making me feel better and get more organised and disciplined. Buy better, buy less is my new approach🌻

Two years ago, after gaining enough weight to have gone up a size, I got rid of everything that was too small. Then COVID happened and I lost weight - I know, but I don’t cook so restaurants closing has been a big deal - and now everything is too big. I’ve spent the last year buying new clothes. So I’ve decided to keep the high quality pieces I really love just in case I gain weight again.

I find that the fabrics were actually way better 15-20years ago. I went through my moms clothes recently from the 90ies, because this style was trending. So I could really compare the quality. The new technology only made the fabrics cheaper because this is what the market wants! With people throwing clothes out so fast, the industry is using these weird mixes of 3 or 4 different synthetic fibers these days. If you are lucky there is 20-30% of some natural fiber in the mix. And there are so many mediocre synthetic fabrics even used on designer clothing. Sometimes I think designers think their customers are dumb.
I agree that fabric quality has really gone downhill over the last 10 years or so. Even among designer and high-end high street brands, you’ll find clothes made entirely of polyester, viscose and the like, yet you’re paying a hefty premium on them. Makes no sense at all.
@@methaclaes4462 thats right for most customers. They just don't educate themselves about the fabrics. One could for example use filters online for 100% Cotton, Silk, Wool or Cashmere and so on. I would check what you have in multiples and downsize that. The best fit and quality stays. Also what might help you get rid of something might be a colour analysis as you might find some colours are't your best. Anything you can pair with only one thing, can go as well. Anything l buy has to make three different outfits. Or if you have a friend of the same size, invite her over and see what she'd like to have and if you don't mind, give it to her. I personally don't believe in 'haven't worn in a year, bye' approach because it really depends on what you're doing that year or if you have seasons and how those look.
Everything Martéka says below!! It's worth it. If you read my book I talk about the queuing system. Let go of those that won't make it to the front ever! And stop buying more of the same... :)
I totally agree that uncomfortable clothes must go. However, before you throw them out ask someone who can sew whether something can be done about whatever makes them uncomfortable. And if you have the room and they are not worn out yet, put your dated clothes away. Wait 20-25 years and they may be trendy again.

Shell Bell the whole century may be influenced fashion wise by the pandemic. Even when the late night hosts went back to the studio they weren't wearing suits and ties. They may not make that their uniform any more. The twenties have been the game changer decade...
It will be interesting to see what happens! I feel that the next time I get to 'get dressed' I will make more effort than I used to, as it will feel like an opportunity as least to wear something different. My clients and members are saying they are dressing up more even when at home that they were a few months ago, though comfortable clothes are here to stay - thank god.
I advise to keep those items in a 'time capsule' to revisit in 6 months. The important thing is they are OUT of the 'active' wardrobe so you don't have to see them.
This is great advice! Thank you!! Any suggestions about emotional spending!? Also, when wardrobe planning, I got to a place where I've taken out outfits ready to go but on that day, my mood swings to the left! And I'm left with digging for other ideas. Any tips?
Thanks! Only that if you know you change your mind, don't plan in advance. I never plan what I am wearing. Some people plan a week ahead. Whatever works for your personality. BUT it's worth having outfit combinations that you know work so when you decide to wear a certain top, for example, you know a couple of options so it's not too much thinking required.
I still can't accept that I lead a boring life, and probably will for the foreseeable future 😂. I mean, is it the worst thing to wear a sexy cocktail dress to run errands because it makes you feel good?
@@clairewillow6475 Hahaha oh it totally is! I have yet to actually do that. I'm saving them for the rare date or night out, once the world goes back to normal.

Have to say this is pretty off the mark around the ‘clothes date after about 5 years’ not least because of the rising awareness of low buy years and sustainability, but also because vintage is huge, and style doesn’t go out of fashion. This video is depressingly around trend and not style. I have plenty of items longer than 5 years and French women in particular have the same items for decades as they know what works for them.
I am making 2021 my year of refresh. No more cheap clothing that I end up not liking after a few wears and I don't want to even think about the money I wasted.

Yes this exactly :)
I totally agree that uncomfortable clothes must go. However, before you throw them out ask someone who can sew whether something can be done about whatever makes them uncomfortable. And if you have the room and they are not worn out yet, put your dated clothes away. Wait 20-25 years and they may be trendy again.
Hello Lizzie, great content! Thank you very much, just subscribed :D And also I noticed you haven't put any ads in your video, so kind of you. I hope your channel will keep growing fast.
Thanks so much Ginevra.
I saw it as a fresh start as well when getting rid of unworn, ill-fitting clothing.
Great Kimberly! It really is cathartic don't you think? And in my experience stops you from buying more in the future as it's a wake up call.
All facts. Thank you.
Thanks LNGG's Channel!
Excellent advice!!
I'm so glad you found it useful Lisa.
Hi Lizzie, may I ask where your glasses are from? Love the frame! X
Thanks so much Alexandra. They are from Cubitts.
Must discipline myself to get rid of all the things I’m going to slim into one day 🤨
Same!
Yes, it will be worth it :)
I always gift or donate my online purchases and gifts which are of wrong size or fit so I don't have any unworn brand new items in my wardrobe.
I learned a lot from this. Going to my closet now😄
Thanks Irene :)
Thank you for not waving your hands around like a lot of utubers do. Sounds daft but I cannot watch them without feeling sea-sick. Great advice thanks
Thanks, Linda. that's hilarious. Though I think I have the tendency sometimes, so I will think about your comment when I shoot my new videos! :)
Great advice thank you 😻
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for this video. I needed to hear this
Great Vidya Kane!
Lizzie you're brilliant! How much do you charge for your image consultancy services?
Thanks for your interest. I'm not currently offering my 1-1 services at least until lockdown is over. You can find out more on my website lizzieedwards.com and get in touch for details around fees etc
@@LizzieEdwardsStyle many thanks for responding 😊 will be in touch
All I wear now is lounge wear - will I ever don a button down shirt again?
Shell Bell the whole century may be influenced fashion wise by the pandemic. Even when the late night hosts went back to the studio they weren't wearing suits and ties. They may not make that their uniform any more. The twenties have been the game changer decade...
It will be interesting to see what happens! I feel that the next time I get to 'get dressed' I will make more effort than I used to, as it will feel like an opportunity as least to wear something different. My clients and members are saying they are dressing up more even when at home that they were a few months ago, though comfortable clothes are here to stay - thank god.
Great video can’t wait to get started!
Have fun!
What if you plan to lose weight and some of your clothes do not fit at the moment?
These constitute my entire wardrobe 🙈
You've got this Captain Picard! If your wardrose is all thses, then you must find it hard to dress. Rebuild it, carefully :)
Can you make a Video with Basic wardrobe?
Anu, I'll add it to my list :)
I still can't accept that I lead a boring life, and probably will for the foreseeable future 😂. I mean, is it the worst thing to wear a sexy cocktail dress to run errands because it makes you feel good?
Cocktail dress to run errands hmmm 🤔 I’m on the fence about that. On the one hand do what makes you happy. On the other hand, it’s pretty ridiculous 😅
@@clairewillow6475 Hahaha oh it totally is! I have yet to actually do that. I'm saving them for the rare date or night out, once the world goes back to normal.

Just wear it. Dress it down a little and wear the dress. Wear it for yourself and not for other people. Nothing ridiculous about it.
Haha, I know that feeling, I’ve been going to Tesco in my best clothes recently ... 🤣
Pictures, darling
I found this video abit snobbish! Lots of good advice but I wouldn’t want you as a friend going through my wardrobe
This is rich people BS
Fair enough! I don't do it as a friend but as a job.
