    Awesome. Can't help thinking when I hear all this how such an incredible guitar player/shredder/guru as Eddie Van Halen was self taught and in addition, learned so many instruments! He was an instinctive guitar player to the highest degree, knew really nothing about theroy, and shot it into the stratosphere! Still amazed when I hear "eruption"

    • @joeblough261
      @joeblough261 Год назад +1

      Eddie knew music theory, just not in a way that he could articulate it because he learned it in a way analogous to being called "street smart" vs. "book smart". One doesn't play all the instruments he played, with such fluency, only with "feel", and/or without understanding how music works.

    Some of the greatest guitar players never knew theory, and couldn't read a note. Two that come to mind are Reggie Young, a studio guitarist that played the lick on Suspicious minds, and in the Getty. And another is James Burton, who said they handed him a sheet of music in the studio and he said Whats this? I can't read that crap! Let's play the song!

    When improvising over a progression.
    Is it good practice to target the notes in the scale that correspond to the current chord in the progression?
    Also are you able to switch scales as chords switch if you target the root note in the chord.. or does this just make for something chaotic sounding.
    I think it will work just.. I am pretty new to musical theory and trying to understand the different ways you can harmonize.
    Really want to pay for your classes but I am absolutely broke. So its the youtube videos and livestreams for me.

    • @Guitarzoom

  • @OSAMAMAful
    @OSAMAMAful 2 года назад

    Steve says, I play brainlessly all the time, at 10:40, and I am thinking I play brainfully, but it's boringly all the time :D

    • @Guitarzoom
      @Guitarzoom  2 года назад +1

      Thanks for watching! Sorry about that, Keith! Remember, if Steve's playing something above the 12th fret, you can move it down one octave and play it lower on the guitar. For example if the note was on the high E at the 15th fret, you can pay the note one octave lower on the high E, 3rd fret.
      If you're primarily an acoustic player (like me, Mike from GuitarZoom), you'll run into this sort of thing a lot: you'll find songs written for electric that you really want to play on your acoustic. And you want it to sound as authentic as possible, but there's stuff in the song that just can't be played the same way on acoustic.
      When that happens, it's VERY helpful to know where the notes are on the fretboard, as well as understand a few basic music theory concepts. Knowing that stuff can help you find creative ways to re-work electric songs for acoustic, so you can play the songs you want to play and sound great. :-)

    Lydian?? 🤔🤔

    • @Guitarzoom
      @Guitarzoom  Год назад +1

      Hey Joel! The correct Lydian mode for the key of C (or Am) would be F lydian which is the 4th degree of C. However if you want to get a more "exotic" sound you can try over the Am chord to play C lydian. The "exotic" note would be F# so be careful to change this when the F chord comes up. Try it out and let me know how this works out and if you have another way of using the Lydian sound I'd love to know how you use it. Thanks for your post.

    Did you say A minor was the same as C major? I'm confused.

    • @___and_memes_for_all

      its relative key is c major

    • @laoude7890
      @laoude7890 3 года назад +1

      ok, i know im 8 months late but here it is.
      its got the same notes.
      the notes A minor are A,B,C,D,E,F and G
      the notes of C major are C,D,E,F,G,A and B
      so they are basically the same scale.
      the difference is the notes your focusing on.
      if your playing a C major scale you want to target the C,E and G note to get that signature bright major sound.
      if you play A minor, you would target the A, E and C notes to get the signature dark sound of the minor chord.
      and targeting notes i mean starting on those notes, ending with those notes or really predominantely showing of those notes.
      thats why C major is the same as A minor.
