The pentatonic scale is a crucial guitar scale for guitar players, and sometimes it's easy to get confused on how the patterns work and connect, so hopefully this tutorial will help you better understand.

When you go to college to study for your Bachelor's degree, or your Master's, or maybe even your PhD, if you're lucky, you meet a few professors along the way that really make learning fresh and exciting-professors who are able to bring everything together in a way that makes sense. Steve is one of those very rare professors that makes learning the guitar fresh and exciting. Everything he teaches you makes sense. He's an amazing instructor.

Actually I agree. And I never agree with people on RUclips.
In college I spent 3 years studying economics, minor in History, then I had this professor that changed my life, the best story teller you'd ever hear....ditched Economics, I've been teaching 20th century American History at UofM for 17 years.

Steve is by far the best instructor available online, I joined and went through courses like Jam Play, Guitar Tricks and TrueFire and the Instructors don't even come close. Having taught College myself in the past, there is nothing better than having someone that is a College Professor of Music and Professional musician teach you, his level of instruction highly detail yet his concepts are easy to learn, I'm learning tons from his teaching and have cancelled all other programs and gone with him! Thanks Steve!

  • @pentachronic

Got to say, this has been an AHA lesson for me. Really freaking cool. And what’s even easier is if you want the blues notes, it’s the middle of the first 1-3 and the outside of the 3rd 1-3 (ie #4 as you add it up the neck).. Once you’ve mastered the pentatonics, the blues scale is just 2 more notes. Easy !!!

I learned these scales, the fretboard, all scales by notes rather than patterns years ago BUT this is a great way to encourage students in that critical early stage where learning all 5 patterns of the pentatonic or blues scale might seem 'a bit much'. Excellent work & I'm ashamed that I didn't get it myself with all that playing. 👍👍👍👍👍

I've been playing bass too long. Theory gets in the way, so when I decided to buy a Les Paul and give it whirl, I couldn't think past "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" on the 'b' and high 'e' strings. Fifteen minutes invested in this video uncorked the genie. I never thought I could do 'all that' with a pentatonic scale. Kudos and all kinds of good stuff to this master teacher!

Steve, Great Trick!!! I will soon be 70. I'm still a Player, Collector AND Instructor. I am Retired but still Teach a Limited Number of Students from 11 yrs old to 70+. I try not to "Beat Scales" into Students BUT I tell them although running Scales may seem Boring Initially, they will KNOW when they are becoming Good as they will not even consider Playing a Gig until they have loosened up by running their Scales and what I call "Running Chords as a Tune" comprising of Majors, Minors, Aug's and Diminished PLUS some variations, ie, Min7's, etc. You just Helped Me Help Them with this Trick. One little "Trick" I came up with Many Years ago regarding knowing the various Notes on the Fret Board vs. "Sheer Memorization" was - When one plays a 6String Barre Based on the 6th Sting is - "One has (2) 5's (Strings 2 & 5) (1) 3 (String 3) and all other 3 Strings are a (1) - The Root Note and Two Octaves! Of course, they DO have to understand a Basic Triad. I mentioned this to a Fantastic Jazz Player and Teacher Years ago and He said my Scheme made absolutely NO Sense to Him so maybe I just have a Weird Mind. Regardless, Your Pentatonic Trick is Fantastic! Thanks for sharing! ErnieSC

I did take guitar lessons when I was a child but he never taught me any technique, scales, modes , only how to read music and full song's. I've never had any understanding of the things you are teaching. I'm basically starting over and just in a couple of lessons with you, I have far more knowledge than when I was planning everyday. i'm impressed with how you simplified this. I have been playing rythm for 35 years and recently decided to learn to play better lead by memorizing scales. the 1-3, 1-4 technique is awesome as is the fact that the positions are the notes of the pentatonic scale. with my experience I can't believe I didn't see that! embarrassing but an epiphany all the same, I thank you sincerely.

    • @robicool
      @robicool 8 лет назад +2

It's the same thing man. He's not referring to the actual fret numbers, just the distance between them as you climb up on each string, including the one you started on.
If you're playing A minor pent in the first position, you start on the E string 5th fret, and go up 3 to the 8th fret...so you're covering four frets in total.
      So it's:
      1 - A 5th fret
      2 - Bb 6th fret - miss out
      3 - B 7th fret - miss out
      4 - C 8th fret
      1 to 4.
Hop up to the next string, start again at 1 (5th fret), skip out 2, hit 3 (7th fret). You've only covered three this time. 1 to 3. And so on for the rest of the scale. Do you get it? It's hard to actually explain haha

Steve Stine is a gifted teacher.. I am a piano/keyboard player with some bass background and learning guitar. I spun my wheels trying to learn guitar watching and reading other guides. I feel like Steve is talking directly to me answering the questions that i have that no one else was capable of explaining. I would bet Steve also plays piano as he can deliver information explaining the relationships in understanding music. I don't get how he has 121 dislikes. Probably from guys on youtube or charging to teach students concepts Steve gives you in a 10 minute video, and they charge a years worth of lessons.

I'm buying a guitar in the next couple of weeks so thought i'd watch some music theory videos on YT just to give me the heads up. well i've been watching these videos for about a month or so now and I have to say, my head is completely Boggled. Well it was until I saw this video. Everything has suddenly become crystal clear. This is by far the best tutorial video I've seen on YT. SO CLEAR, SIMPLE!! Thanks Steve:)

Steve Stine, this is a great lesson. Really makes you learn to identify where the scale repeats itself, etc.
Readily available information presented in a way that is easy to memorize, good job!!!

awesome tip thank you. Such an easy way to see it when you spiral that pattern down. I call it a spiral because the center of the 1/3 group appears to go diagonally down the fret board. Great tip!

I love all of your lessons. You make me play better every time I watch a video.

Man you are great!! I am learning soo much from you!! I'm kinda intermediate kinda player. Been playing off an on for at least 30 yrs more off then on in the middle of them years. I think I was stuck in a rut for at least 15 of those years that I didn't play as much! Man these last few years it's incredible how much I'm learning!! Paying a lot attention to your theory videos on chords an the fretboard. Now trying to get these scales down and know what I'm doing!! Etc! Etc!! JUST WANNA SAY THANK YOU!! YOU TEACH A VERY EASY WAY OF LEARNING!! STRAIGHT TO THE POINT!! THANKS MAN!! YOUR AWESOME!!!

Hello Mr Stine... I like your approach. This lesson particularly makes it possible to understand better and actually cut down on the confusion when you look at the fret board. Very helpful.
I've played drums for the last 15 years but 2 months ago I decided to learn the guitar. I'm 52y/o and and kick myself in the asss because i should of started learning guitar back when I was 20! lol
Thanks again for your help and the time you take out of your life to teach others. I don't think most people understand just how much time, aggravation and work this takes to accomplish this and it doesn't matter what instrument one might play. Music is the toughest thing one can learn and sometimes teach, it's a whole different language but at the same time it's the most universal language in the world.
Thanks again for the help with all your videos, I really appreciate your time.

Awesome lesson. I had always wondered about that repeating pattern. Removing the "repeating" string brings it all into focus. Thanks. I had already memorized the position patterns, but now the geometry is more obvious. That will be very helpful.
