I just bought a TOPS knife today, and I can’t wait to take it out on my next adventure. I’m retired from the military, but strangely enough, took up backpacking after taking off my dog tags. I was drawn to TOPS by this RUclips channel and the company itself by their reputation.
Great video and what a fantastic American company, I had to break out my TOPS Wild Pig Hunter Blackout Edition while watching and now I appreciate it even more and that says a lot.
TOPS Knives are some of the best knives out there - at any price, they can be fully relied on in any situation without exception, and they have something for everyone. Even at full MSRP, a TOPS brand knife is well worth it. Great video.
I have no real use for it but I really want a Tom Brown tracker! They make great knives for sure! Them and ESEE are some of the best real world, hard use woods/survival knives made.
Great video, great company, great knives, and great people behind the scenes. I've been fortunate enough to get to know some of the guys personally and build a friendly one on one relationship with them and it makes me even more secure and proud to own and use their knives. Love Tops knives and my friends there as well.
Jonathan Zook's Outdoors Laboratory they might be nice people over it tops but they still use cheap ass 1095 to make a majority of their knives. That still cost Pennies on the dollar. It's time for them to step up to the plate and start using higher quality Steels light CPM 154 CPM 3v and s35vn
@@daviddrake3481 they make knives for outdoors men and military. Those premium steels are very hard to sharpen especially if you dont have the right equipment and time.
david drake IMHO, it’s ALL in the heat Treatment! That ‘Differential Heat Treat.’ Is The Bomb. For example, RMJ TACTICAL [makes Tough As HELL Tomahawks, like the Eagles Talon~ check that one out]..does Diff.Heat Treat. & that SPECIFICALLY (in accord w/ their chosen type of steel) is what sets them apart.., again, imho.🇺🇸
david drake I think its more the design of (some of) their knives. 1095 is a cheap steel but is a good steel. It isnt just tops but cold steel and even esee use 1095 and they give an unconditional lifetime guarantee on their blades. Ive put my 1095 knives through hell and never had one break. If properly heat treated They hold a nice edge. There are certainly better steels T-10, 5160 but you can expect to pay alot more for those.
I love my Tops BOB Fieldcraft knife. Rock solid blade. The kydex sheath alone i worth it. I'm a left handed person and carry it cross draw from my left side using my right hand (I'm a bit ambidextrous) and really like the 360 degree belt clip. Very nice touch.
The guy's name I believe is Benny. He does an awesome job. Heat treats the knives and sands the handle slabs. He does it quicker than a machine can and he is VERY good at what he does. That's why TOPS are #1 on my favorite knives list. I carry one every day. If your a hater...get a Tahoma field knife or a Kukuri 7 to name a few and you won't be. That's just a few knives that really work well. Tops doesn't make junk and it's made in America👍🏻
Awesome! Outstanding and quality making the knifes. Do they have outstanding warranty? Like ESEE knifes? If they do I want to buy more than 5 knifes over 250 plus bucks each knife.
Love my couple of TOPS knives even more now. Just keeping doing things the way you do perfect blend of man and machine. Except on my scalpel the kydex is a bit loose with a little play. I do like a super snug kydex tho.
+ImOnProbation11 You can adjust that fit to be tighter with a heat gun. If you give us a call we can walk you through it. Or if you would rather send it in, we can adjust it.
+TOPS Knives No worries thanks. I have made a few knives and sheaths of my own so I should be ok if I get around to it. But thanks again, you guys are awesome and run a fantastic company.
Have 4 or 5 already. Want to addnthr Operator 7 Dino stabber, but I don't want the dangler sheath. I want a good kydex or kydex inside a nylon wirh molly attachment.
I really like the look and feel of Tops knives. But the heat treatment is anything else but ideal. Now I understand way I saw so many cases of Tops Knives that bent under a relatively low force. The Blade ist simply the soft (except fore the cutting edge). The hardness of steel runs hand in hand with it's tensile yield strength. That means that the blade won't break, but it would be bent long before a through hardend Blade would actually break. Knives don't need a diverential heat treatment, if you do an proper heat treatment on 1095 it won't be brittle at all. Just buy a good annealing oven, that also gives you better controll over the hardening temperature, which is very important.
The Chinese knife makers have been using very high quality steels (american etc.) for years. Do you know Sanrenmu? People in the industry don't talk about brands like Sanrenmu that often but they are producing many of the oh so american brands like Spyderco (to which extend is unknown). Spyderco doesn't really care as they already told the world that they think that Sanrenmu produces quality knives but other companies try to cover up the fact that they produce their knives in China by doing the final assembly in the US and other places that usually stand for quality. What I'm trying to say is that you are surrounded by chinese made stuff and you think it's well made cause they do the final assembly somewhere else. China doesn't have to hide any more as they've learned to make really high quality stuff over the past decades like phones (OnePlus, Oppo, Xiaomi, etc.), watches (Seagull, Fiyta, etc.), Knives (Stedemon, Reate, Kizer, Rike, etc.) and many other thinga
Gordon Beck Byrd and some other cheap Spyderco knives like the Tenacious made out of China aren't really a great representation of the Spyderco brand. The ones made in Golden, CO are the best in my experience. I enjoy my Para 2, and it wasn't made in China. I realize there is a demographic that doesn't care about pride or country of origin, and that demographic is probably going to buy the cheapest blade they can buy; TOPS isn't interested in that demographic.
How does the river wash acid bath work? Are you exposing just the edge portion of the blade to the chemical, or does the bath somehow actually react to steel hardness so the line is an actual tracing of the HT process?

Doesn't look like they used a thermocouple/PID. Did they use parks 50 quench? It looks like grungy old oil. 1095 is a finicky steel that needs a soak at the right temp and a proper fast quench oil. All that CNC equipment and they can't do a proper kiln or oil. Lmao

I scrubbed the shit out of it, no help. Took the G-10 handles off and noticed the two tone thin orange part sticks like industrial oil or glue. It’s hard to explain but I had to leave the handles off.

Thats about as good as 1095 gets, but they're missing one step in the differential heat treat, as shown by the heat treat line thats revealed by the acid wash. The entire tip appears to have the same hardness qualities as the edge. (brittle?) The missing step is putting a small amount of clay (or other heat absorbing material that stays put) along the spine starting where it tapers down to and around the tip just behind the sharpened edge. The extra material will make the thinner tip section of the spine behave like the thicker rearward area during heat treat. The Japanese have been heat treating there katana swords that way for centuries.
Great vid. Have a Back Bite arriving today. My only gripe is that workmanship is great, but the overly thick stock impedes the edge that can be had and the usefulness for cutting tasks and uses that aren't pure combat, military abuse scenarios. The provided stock thickness could never be fully needed unless a pipe was employed over the handle and used as a pry bar. The stock is much thicker than any human hand could ever test or need. Yes, points will be thicker, along with edges, so abuse of the point is minimized, but I can't imagine if a Tops fillet knife would ever be practical.... LOL
Dear TOPS, Will you guys ever fix/upgrade the sheath on the TOPS MSK Survival Neck Knife? I ask because there is a small slit of a opening near the tip side of the sheath (where the tip of the blade sits once sheathed). This allows moisture to get in the sheath, causing rust spots near the tip of the blade. Mind you, I have been applying rust prevention solution... and yet the rust spots still appear. Has anyone else notice this with to your MSK Survival Neck Knife? Will closing the small gap make the rust issues worse since there will be less places for moisture etc. to escape? Basically, was the design intentionally done with a purpose? Please ignore this comment if closing the gap will make it worse. Any feedback is welcomed. Thanks in advance.
+냄새꾸리꾸리한 발까락 You mean the drainage hole? that's there on purpose. It actually does the opposite of let moisture in, it is designed to let water out and also allow for condensation to evaporate. If it wasn't there there would be more moisture in the sheath.
+Jimmy Grey Do they call that the drainage gap/hole/slit etc.? Because I wear mine around the neck... and that area where I complained about in my previous comment faces towards the sky. Maybe if the sheath was set up the opposite way? But that would make it very awkward to unheated the knife etc. And the holes on the sheath for the ball chain (I replaced it with 550 cord) is set up that the hole we are talking about is facing upwards not down. So I do not see how it can be used as drainage hole unless you took off the knife/sheath and flipped it upside down.
꾸리꾸리한 발까락 냄새 Yeah but it also allows for evaporation of condensation. Nearly every kydex sheath has a hole or slit there, if you think it's a problem why not just fix it yourself, put a blob of epoxy in there or something.
+Jimmy Grey Sure, I could heat up the kydex and mold the slit together... but if that hole is suppose to air out the moisture, then it would be pointless right? Also, I owned 2 other neck knives made out of 1095 and with customized kydex sheaths (fairly similar to my TOPS layout)... but I never had rust formation on tips of the blades like the TOPs. Its not like I mistreated the tops by dipping the tip under water lol... Anyway, thanks for the feedback.
꾸리꾸리한 발까락 냄새 Okay man, no problem. Do what you feel is right. I think if you emailed tops about it they might say something similar to what I said. The msk is a great little knife though.

Some people don't like the rounded spine but i have no issues, i think it may even add some strength when batoning. It is as comfortable to use and will do anything that my esee 6 will but looks cooler and has a more versatile handle.. but the sheath was absolute garbage. I doubt i will ever replace it as my favorite knife so i spent another $200+ On a custom sheath from patriot leather. If i ever break this knife i can just buy another for around $150 but i will have this sheath forever. While i love alot of Tops knives i should add their customer service sucks. Wanted to buy one of their knives minus the serrations and they were absolute dicks to me about it.
