I have lost my father last May and when I receved that phone call, from the other side of the world, I instinctively played this song at full blast in my apartment, in tears. A great moment of my life.
may he rest in peace my brother....blessings ...my father died in juli....i hear you...i did same...this song and this one ruclips.net/video/U-0s4l4Ydjo/видео.html
massive props to whoever directed this video, it's an incredible accompaniment to the entire 11-minute trip of a song from start to finish tbh. Preoccupations have some of the most consistently good music videos.
With acts like Preoccupations, Protomartyr, Ought, Iceage, Algiers and Chelsea Wolfe, can we say we're going through a second wave of post-punk revivalism?
marcni did we ever have that second age of punk yet, though or this is one of those beeb or toot placements in time - a literary mountain climb with an equal opposing descent garnering in the appropriate finale
Along with King Gizzard, Swans, and Radiohead, Preoccupations is one of my favorite bands right now. And the fact that they released this music video on my birthday makes it even more special. 3:48 Boy do they go full New Order on this one.
+Neel 2000 Don't get angry over the Grammy's. We need to stop giving them so much attention. Everyone knows it's just a popularity contest. No bigge. The important thing is what the fans think. And AMSP has been super well-received across the board.
This is a great album and when I saw them in Ramsgate, the solo the drummer did (at the end of Death, I think?) was one of the most amazing things I've ever seen.
[Verse 1: Matt Flegel] Necessary but against your better judgments You were being overcharged in the market square Overwhelmed and it’s coming from all angles You were entertaining the idea that it wasn’t fair [Pre-Chorus 1: Matt Flegel] But the picture seemed sharp enough To view life through you I can’t remember where we were Where were we when we all went under? [Chorus: Matt Flegel] You don’t have to say sorry For all the things you failed to do You don’t have to say sorry For all the times when everything fell through [Verse 2: Matt Flegel] State-sponsored character assassination I promise that I’ll burn your things when you’re dead and gone It’s an orchestrated controversy No strategies for dissolving in the atmosphere [Pre-Chorus 2: Matt Flegel] And the distance seemed sure enough From Point A to Point B Your favourite feeling was the ground falling out From beneath your feet [Chorus: Matt Flegel] You don’t have to say sorry For all the things you failed to do You don’t need to say sorry For all the times when everything fell through [Verse 3: Dan Boeckner] Unholiness Arrives by satellite on time And I see no anomalies Between both sides [Verse 4: Dan Boeckner] You could help me With every little need End scene Left here with no paraphernalia Recede [Bridge: Matt Flegel (Dan Boeckner)] Erasing (Erasing) Your memory (Your memory) Erasing (Erasing) Your memory (Your memory) [Verse 5: Matt Flegel] Our particles collide and drown By candlelight Our particles collide and drown By candlelight
This week has been a memory spiral. I've been listening to The Caretaker- Everywhere at the end of Time. I never knew the lyrics to this song. For years. Thanks
Is there an explanation for the glass of water that keeps reappearing throughout the video? Because if it's a reoccurring object, it must play an important role in the story.
So I don’t quite understand the story..but it has a heavy dose of elemental symbolism. Water in the glasses throughout and at the end the river with the woman, and constant depictions of fire as well. But I don’t know what it means.
hopscotchoblivion I couldn’t find the music you’re referencing, but I would listen to anything as emotionally intense as the second half of this song at least 100 times.
i really wonder to interpol and paul banks as fronting so many musical endeavors unless similar to so much instances of performance to musician and either those long-since dead or another form of the word, where women go to weekend then viet cong and now preoccupations, not to mention anything sooner and so maybe ian curtis is calling from the grave or has been at least, for if prince had a vault, how many others have been raided and looted - the almost monotonous deliver seems the warmest thing i've known musically since a plane crash killed three of different popular variety, long live johnny cash, man in black and his prison blues
Im not sure but i feel like the water throughout the video and the water at the end are linked and setting himself on fire was his way of making it to that water ,like it was a destination of some kimd but only through sacrifice could it be reached. Thats my guess anyway.
Jack Mcandrew Our hero is a drummer pyromaniac. He loves watching things burn but is ultimately unsatisfied afterwards. When we first see the glass of water, the formation of frozen ice cubes causes them to spin and the water begins to whirlpool and spiral. Later we see the same glass, ice melted but spiraling more so than previously. He then drinks the water. I took the glass of water to symbolize his mental state spiraling out of control and his ultimate acceptance that the only way he would ever be complete is to become the fire. I think the end of the video is the opposite version from a woman made of ash.

Same here. It was pretty wild.
same here
Happens every time.

Are you friends with the band or something?
Dan Boeckner fucking kills it on his vocal parts, such an amazing song.
Flegel's bass is incredible in this song. He's top class; up there with the best, in my opinion.
Up there with hook haha
Glad they fit all 11:26 of the song for the video, such a gorgeous song

We're going through something, including nothing
don't forget Eagulls
ABSOLUTELY
Along with King Gizzard, Swans, and Radiohead, Preoccupations is one of my favorite bands right now. And the fact that they released this music video on my birthday makes it even more special.
3:48 Boy do they go full New Order on this one.
All of these bands had fantastic output this year!
IKR!
Speaking of Radiohead, and not 2 mention David Bowie, I am SUPER PISSED with how bad they have been snubbed with the recent Grammy nominations!
+Neel 2000 Don't get angry over the Grammy's. We need to stop giving them so much attention. Everyone knows it's just a popularity contest. No bigge. The important thing is what the fans think. And AMSP has been super well-received across the board.
Grammy's don't matter my man.
holy fuck that was beautiful
This is a great album and when I saw them in Ramsgate, the solo the drummer did (at the end of Death, I think?) was one of the most amazing things I've ever seen.
Fantastic song and another great video.
One of the most beautiful song of the punk revival, great ! The video let me think about the film "under the skin"
Fantastic movie.
You ever seen Posession (1981) ?
This song is fantastic. I'm really liking these two albums from this band.
Drama and poetical creepiness, by far the best Preocc video
Memory of an earlier life ... Music and sensational video, a masterpiece
Dan Boekner of Wolf Parade on vocals. Totally brought the soul into this already amazing song.
best track of the album
Diego Mora anxiety
I needed this song in my life. Thank you Preoccupations.
Everything Preoccupations do is gold.
This song is too much. I like it even more with each listen.
First vinyl I've purchased in 25 years.
[Verse 1: Matt Flegel]
Necessary but against your better judgments
You were being overcharged in the market square
Overwhelmed and it’s coming from all angles
You were entertaining the idea that it wasn’t fair
[Pre-Chorus 1: Matt Flegel]
But the picture seemed sharp enough
To view life through you
I can’t remember where we were
Where were we when we all went under?
[Chorus: Matt Flegel]
You don’t have to say sorry
For all the things you failed to do
You don’t have to say sorry
For all the times when everything fell through
[Verse 2: Matt Flegel]
State-sponsored character assassination
I promise that I’ll burn your things when you’re dead and gone
It’s an orchestrated controversy
No strategies for dissolving in the atmosphere
[Pre-Chorus 2: Matt Flegel]
And the distance seemed sure enough
From Point A to Point B
Your favourite feeling was the ground falling out
From beneath your feet
[Chorus: Matt Flegel]
You don’t have to say sorry
For all the things you failed to do
You don’t need to say sorry
For all the times when everything fell through
[Verse 3: Dan Boeckner]
Unholiness
Arrives by satellite on time
And I see no anomalies
Between both sides
[Verse 4: Dan Boeckner]
You could help me
With every little need
End scene
Left here with no paraphernalia
Recede

4:13 And thus, this is how humanity discovered fire.

3:58 Second part of the song is similar to The Sound - Judgement?

stroking the spider... I couldn't do that

Total speculation on my part, but it may have something to do with the transition from Women to Preoccupations

Maybe he is trying to find that girl. It sure looks like she is looking for someone.
