Wow, just discovered this, and the timing for finding this couldn’t have been better. I’m 22, and despite losing my job from covid, I decided it was time to make massive change in my life, so a couple weeks ago I moved across the US with only three suit cases and a couple thousand. I feel like the song/video perfectly embody that inexplicable feeling you get when you’re maintaining so much hope for so long without even having a concrete reason to, but you do anyway. To hear this for the first time in my first (empty) apartment 2,500 miles from home was absolutely surreal, and feels like it just marked the start of something new. Maybe this is an overshare, but I can’t think of another video that touched me the way this one did and just thought I’d share the experience 🙂
I feel you
You rigourously stepped out of your comfort zone - such courageous decisions in life always pay off. Good luck man, i wish you all the best! (All the way from the Netherlands :-)
I gotta say, I usually do my best to avoid comments sections on the internet, but hearing somebody open up and be vulnerable and then seeing anonymous commenters being both positive and supportive just gives me hope :) Thanks for not being haters!!!
keep it up man. The mental battle is the first battle. No matter what happens, positivity attracts opportunity.

As a Producer I have to come back to this masterpiece once every few months. Absolutely incredible, 2:56 the look on his face when he realizes he’s a GOD, but doesn’t remember asking for it. Gets me every time! You could teach a college course on this one video.

what's your full analysis of the video?
@@ericmburu173 could be the video inspired him. I often use movie scenes as inspiration while making music. in terms of music i think the aesthetic of the video and the ending is what these people like. I think people need more producers like myself who arent afraid to make music videos without lyrics
wow, NEEDE THAT. SMH IDKNOW.LOLLLLOLOLOLOL HIYA!
It's interesting how his nystagmus enhances this effect. I believe in his case it would probably be early-onset, due to albinism and the resulting visual impairment (observe how none of them drove the car - they probably wouldn't feel safe doing so). It underlines the uncertain look on his face in an amazing way. Just like the driving thing was turned around to make a facelass goon the chauffeur of the higher beings. Their visual health status and the resulting problems were utilized by the director in amazing ways!
I hope every one of us gets that Devine realization look at some point.
From poverty to the military and a couple trips to prison, this is one of the strangest things I have ever witnessed in my 50 years. Loved it.

I feel like everyone here is trying to explain an emotion that no word can explain and everyone is curious about the thoughts of others. This beat has in itself something very strongly mystical.
I felt the same way. I cried the first time I heard the track. But not out of sadness or joy. it's a sense of understanding. I just don't know what understanding.

He used a chinese ghost town somewhere in suburban area of China that the government do not give a damn ,nice .

Thought the video was quite brilliant but had no idea it was Gavras until this comment. And well, makes sense now. Guy is a brilliant mind.
There are too many people doing the same thing right now. Whenever somebody makes videos, films, or photographs about China, they are all like this. One of the famous movie makers in China named Jia Zhangke has been doing it for decades, if you're interested check it out.
Man, this music video has some of the most breathtaking visuals I have ever seen. You just can't help but get hypnotized.

I heard this visceral piece for the first time on the plane. In that moment, when the synths came in, I felt like I had finally reconciled with the clouds above me, with the universe, with heaven, and with God. I wish I could experience this piece for the first time again. It has a phenomenal, reletentlessly triumphant level of sublimity that I cannot begin to comprehend - one that fills me with emotions that help me see the major events in our world on the horizon, with the knowledge that eventually, we will all be okay.

If anyone else was curious about the filming location, it's Tianducheng (Sky City), a Paris-themed community in Hangzhou, China. The tower in the center is a 1:3 scale replica of the Eiffel Tower.
Also, if you haven't seen it yet, look for this song's second official music video. It's great too. If you see Mars near the start, you found the right one.

When the synth hits I tear up if I’m fully with the track
Something big is on the horizon - something intense, something hopeful, something life-changing, something universal, for all of us. This track is reletentlessly triumphant in that moment - it's the visceral sublimity of its second section with the heavy synths that captures this essence I am talking about; may God bless us all in this universe, and the history we find ourselves living in.
I still think this is one of the most perfect music video projects of all time. It is simply astonishing.

You are confusing emotions or feelings... it is not HOPE, the sensation is that of MELANCHOLY...
I will use the words given on a lecture by a spritual medium :
"Every human being senses an inner longing that goes deeper than the longings for emotional and creative fulfillment. This longing comes from sensing that another, more fulfilling state of consciousness and a larger capacity to experience life must exist.”

When this video came out I was dating a girl from Paris, our relationship fell apart while she studied abroad in China and the haunted vibes in a replica of Paris in this video matched my feelings perfectly
This piece of music is the embodiment of an event happening, so massive that almost everything around you was building around to said moment. This piece provides an unbelievable emotion which I can't describe - one in which is sublime, beautiful, and visceral, full of the knowledge that in my life, or for humanity, something big is on the horizon. We are on the verge of a third world war, a new international era - whether it's the conflict between the U.S., Russia and China this year, or the hope we all feel moving on from current times, Jamie xx's Gosh forms the dichotomy between a relentless triumph of hope and a dreaded sense of chaos subsuming: it captures the phenomenon that is our global lives, and the massive events entailed within it. If you asked me, what record depicts the world the absolute most accurately at this current time - it would be this one.

One way of explaining it could be like a white guy that is actually black - it starts in a purple room, and then he drives a blue car in a grey environment, and he’s surrounded by kids with black shoes and yellow hair. It could be said like that. But also, in my head, it was almost a process. It came about when I saw the pictures of the fake Paris in China. Everyone is talking about cultural appropriation and I was like, "That thing is the most insane fucking cultural appropriation." It’s almost like you don’t put it on a moral level - it’s not Iggy Azalea singing like a black woman, it’s fucking insane. It’s like a cultural appropriation vortex._
_I almost saw (the video) like a coming-of-age journey through a world where _*_cultural appropriation became so insane that you need spirituality in order to elevate (yourself) from something where culture makes no sense._*_ Somehow, _*_spirituality is where that kid (in the video) is going to find sense._*_ It’s like when you leave your friends, when you’re in high school, and then you’re going to go to the big town - that kind of coming-of-age type of narrative. And this why then they all circle him and he’s detaching himself from his other group of friends, and then he becomes his own prophet. But really, _*_he doesn’t elevate himself, it’s the camera that elevates_*_ - so it’s the old thing where he doesn’t change, it’s the perception that we have that changes. This was the intellectual process I had making it._
@@jonc8074 Yup, pretty much.
I think it's to show we are all the same, it's just skin and hair colour
Yuri Sucupira I love that cultural appropriation vortex very apt. We’re already kind of at this point where things are so abstract as to be incoherent and you do need to elevate in order to overcome the utter oppression of it.
@@2shizz Quite the contrary, I think: we're all different in terms of e.g. culture, and a considerable amount of our self-identification comes from this attachment to such culture.
=====
However, Internet and globalization cause everyone to culturally influence everyone, therefore e.g. non-Koreans get in touch with K-Pop videos (thanks to e.g. RUclips, music streaming services et cetera) and then adopt the K-Pop clothing / fashion style, non-nordic peoples watch the TV series "Vikings" and suddenly everywhere in the world the Sidecut haircutting style becomes a fashion trend, a right-wing politician like Donald Trump is elected president and thanks to his actions in social medias and Internet coverage of his activities by the mainstream news websites (the French newspaper Le Monde, German newspaper Bild, El País from Spain, G1 in Brazil, BBC in the UK, Clarín in Argentina, et cetera), suddenly the whole world is aware of Trump's election and then a trend of right wing presidents (like e.g. in Brazil and Poland) begins.
=====
Internet allows us to communicate with each other and learn about each other, our different languages, fashion preferences, religions et cetera, but it also causes us to influence each other and therefore gradually abandon some elements of our own culture while we simultaneously adhere to cultural elements of the others.
=====
This is globalization: we gradually move from being a citizen of our countries to becoming a citizen of the world. Globalization incentives cultural appropriation and in a certain way we are enriched by it, but at the same time we're also impoverished of our own (local, regional, national) culture, too.
=====
Maybe it's a good thing, or bad: only time will tell. But I think that despite of how one might judge such process, it's clear that it's happening and I believe that the director of the video above really wanted to address and illustrate it through the exposure of a "radical" example of cultural appropriation, hence his choice of filming the clip at such location: a cultural appropriation *materialized* as a whole Chinese city.
I think it's a MasterCard commercial
This has got to be one of the greatest music videos ever made
It is truly stunning. It doesn't even look like a music video, it's more like a big budget sci fi event!
I've been listening to this song for years with my wife and it still puts us in a world of its own with an atmospheric dynamic that cant be explained. And the video is a work of art that underlines this atmosphere. THANK YOU!
this song smells like chill february, time of the day 10:00-15:00
My eyes had just saw a fucking masterpiece, and my ears had listened another fucking masterpiece.
Ran to his set at coachella to hear at least ten minutes of his set and he ended it by playing this song. Hearing this live was so rewarding. I am now a fan
When was this?
@@Lenky01 sunday weekend 2 of coachella
Jamie is a don. Welcome to the fold
i want to feel that Setting too. sounds awesome. I hope u stand right in front of a Big Boombox
A friend showed me this music video a few years ago and this still remains as my favourite music video for a song and the instrumental is on another level
Listening to this for the first time and I started tearing up. Makes me want to achieve my full potential and be a better person.
To all the jungle massive all around the UK and beyondIn Ireland, France, Belgium, wherever you can pick this up, manMany thanks for still keeping the vibe alive.
why does this make me feel both depressed and happy
Someone else described it as "hope"
"When the researchers sorted the data, they found that people who ranked high on the neuroticism scale experienced sadness when they had been moved to tears by music, and people who scored high in the openness to experience scale felt like crying because the music provoked a profound sense of awe. "
it´s the magic to jamie xx
I would guess it's because you understand there are goals you want to strive for whose pursuit would probably bring real happiness and meaning into your life, but you're worried you'll never give it a shot because it's scary to take a risk. This song in a way describes that happiness you know you can get but don't have yet. At least, this is what the song does for me.
because you made it through tough moments to deserve this one.
This is such an amazing work of art. Gives me goosebumps by the end of it. Always been a favourite of mine
this is not just a music video this is sacred geometry
I can't remember when last time I enjoyed a music video clip. This is a masterpiece in every detail.
Dont know if you like this song, but this is the most impressive clip i know: Weval - Someday (ruclips.net/video/n-wEvzqdDZg/видео.html)
@@bas_ee Reminds me Max Coopers works which you would need to go through as his clips vary pretty much but here are examples:

For those who have not understood anything in the meaning of this clip. In many countries in sub-Saharan Africa, people with albinism are regularly victims of homicide, they are targets of ritual killings. i lived in africa for 4 years, the population rejects albinism. The number of person albinism that I could meet in the street unemployed proves that they are rejected by the population. I am very proud to see artists defending abinism. They are people like you and me. I hope this clip will change the mentalitys
for the liberty
for equality
Really sad and disappointing fact...
Still in 2018 the world is still focusing on superficial layers of flesh colour, rather than emotions, or skills. Defend those who are rejected for being not same as the crowds.
Just because you lived there doesn't mean you get it. I'm guessing you're white and not actually African, and I'm also guessing you haven't lived in the sub-saharan part because you seem to think Africa is a country, like whites tend to do lmao. They don't "reject" albinism. This artist isn't "defending" albinism either. They're more fetishizing than anything else... know the difference, fool...
How cool another post calling others fools. Keep your cursing to yourself. If you think there is a hint that shows that Africa is mentioned as a country, look through again. I have had friends that have been rejected by whites and friends that have been rejected by blacks. This thing with superficial layers of flesh colour has been holding progress of the world back, for way too long. My post was a comment to GAB RU, to whom my reply to is, rather than the video. GAB RU has mentioned a fact: people with albinism are regularly victims of homicide. If you relate my reply and focus more, probably then you will relate my reply to the subject of discussion rather to the viedo itself. So please pay attention before calling others fools. Have a good day.
modus pwnens : you guessing wrong about me and i have nothing to prove to you. I'm just here to say a fact, whether you like it or not, so thank you for keeping your comments presumptuous for you, and thanks to pay attention before calling others fools
it is not a comment of a person hidden behind his computer that will make me forget something that I could see there, especially in sub-Saharan area
This is by far, the best music video on existence. The song is as good as the video. Love it.
this moved me to tears. we are one.
This is such a powerful piece. I get the chills and it feels so triumphant towards the end. I close my eyes and feel myself rise out of whatever negativity I'm feeling. So much power.

Thanks Jamie, for keeping the vibe alive.
yeah dude, feed your head!
The director of this video said ultimately it is about a young man starting to wake up spiritually while everyone around him, and society remains asleep. The end half is him leaving everyone behind him as he begins to embark on a new journey. The blonde look alike children represent the universe supporting him and his journey, and is sort of like a send off. Probably the most beautiful video ive ever seen.
This is the best music video I've watched, the effort in this is insane.
