    A full tour of my sketchbook I kept from early 2018 to July 2019.
    The goal for the book was to dive deep into the possibilities of art and explore new visual ideas on every page to grow as an artist both technically and creatively. This book has been with me across the globe. It's full of ideas and characters from my mind as well as people and places that are important to me and I've learned so much in every possible meaning filling it.
    I see this book as one big piece. Each page a different part of me, but together they create a whole portrait. I find it difficult to describe myself or my work, but so far the contents of this book is the best way I've managed to explain myself :-)

    • @TheVanillatech
      @TheVanillatech 5 лет назад +46

      @@FrizzleLamb They are VERY overpriced. It's one of those "Yeah but it's Nike Air Max Ultra ... so it's worth £150!" deals. Moleskine are good build quality and have decent hot pressed paper, but they are between £10-£25 (depending on style and size). Many other brands of sketchbook, both hardback and paperback, offer the same build quality with even higher grade paper and with a more dense gsm, for less than half the price. Daler, Rowney, Derwent, Faber Castell etc.
      My local "artist" store doesn't even offer Moleskine sketchbooks anymore, because nobody was buying them when they sit right next to higher quality sketchbooks which cost far less.
      Moleskine is, like I said, a "status" thing, and is very loved by students and yuppies because of the brand. For the best quality, look elsewhere, and you will pay much less.
      I bought my daughter a set of Moleskine Harry Potter notebooks, because they had great front cover designs (embossed) and had been reduced from £20 each (!!!!!!!) to £5. Why? Because nobody bought them for 6 months, and the stationary shop couldn't sell them even at £10. Even at £5 each for essentially notebooks, I was on the fence. But she loves Harry Potter so... yeah.

    • @FrizzleLamb
      @FrizzleLamb 5 лет назад +1

      @@TheVanillatech Oh, I see. Thanks for the info! What sketchbook brand do you recommend that is cheap? :)

    • @TheVanillatech
      @TheVanillatech 5 лет назад +30

      @@FrizzleLamb I guess that different countries offer different brands depending on location. In Germany and mainland Europe, Faber Castell will be cheap. In the UK, Daler Rowney is cheap etc.
      If you're looking for the best sketchbooks, I always go hardback (pay a little more but protects your work AND gives something solid to rest on). Cold pressed paper gives a rough finish, which adds texture. Hot pressed paper gives a smooth finish which gives more control over tone etc. I always go for a balance in sketch books. Having a bit of surface texture gives something to key to, but then I mainly work with pencil.
      Aim for 130gsm density. Anything under 110gsm is very thin, doesn't hold paint or marker well, will bleed through and buckle etc.
      Shop around, your local art store (or any decent online art supplier) will have Daler Rowney or Derwent sketchbooks. Faber Castell tend to use mainly paperback + card for their sketchbooks. Just go for a big branded, well renknowned brand in the art world and you cant go wrong, as long as you make sure the paper is dense enough (check the gsm).
      If you're in the UK and there is a BOYES store near you, I found them selling paperback Daler A4 sketchbooks for £1 each (!!!!!) with 30 sheets. Failing that, go to Hobbycraft, they often have deals on sketchbooks / art pads such as 3 for 2. Rymans is also good, but stay away from their own brand. They are inexpensive but the quality isn't great, comparable to Moleskine perhaps, but you can find better at Rymans depending on what they have in stock at the time.
      Finally, I also reccomend Arboretta sketchbooks. The paper colour is off-white, almost cream, and the paper quality is fantastic. I bought around 20 of these while I was studying illustration and still use them today.
      Take a look at "The Art Shop Skipton" at their sketchpads to get an idea.
      Hope this helps! XD

    I used to be in love with art and drawing and could think of anything to create. Now, i feel so blank. So dry. Its sad... :(
    Edit: I feel for all of you people in the comments... 💔
    Here are some advice that are helping me lately and hopefully will help you:
    ▪First of all, if you feel like you have nothing to draw out of imagination, go back to basics by drawing from reference. Look at your old work to feel a little inspired. My imagination with drawing has been blank lately, so i went back to basics to draw poses and gestures from reference. It's helping me because it's taking me back to that feeling of knowing what to do, knowing what to draw, and feeling in control.
    ▪If you feel depressed and draw then feel so empty still with no ideas (i did that a lot before), i suggest you take a break from drawing for awhile, until you feel like drawing again (but dont take too lonf of a break that u stop drawing entirely, unless maybe you dont want to draw anymore. Also, maybe while youre taking a break, draw at least once in awhile to see if u want to draw again). Try to focus on your mental health first. Get therapy, vent out to friends, family, or your journal. Because sometimes if you draw then u feel depressed, ur brain can associate bad emotions with drawing which wont make you feel like drawing anymore.
    ▪Lastly, dont critique every single drawing u make just because it didnt turn out the way you wanted it to be, or another persons art is way better than yours (because i did that a lot and it was making things worse). Its good to find 'some' mistakes in your art so u can improve it but it wont help thinking that ur whole art is trash. Thinking this way can be a bad habit so whenever u see ur art and start thinking about how ugly or "not perfect" it is, try changing that thought with a more positive one (and dont thing that youre lying to yourself when u do that. U might feel like that at first like i did, but keep going on until u get used to thinking much better). By changing the way u used to think about a situation, something or someone, the way u feel about that thing will change overtime, depending on how u made urself think about it. This practice is called CBT, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and is a really effective way of therapy. So youre basically giving yourself a self-therapy ❤
    But remember that it all comes down to choices. If youre willing enough to change then there will be changes, small and big.
    Good luck to all of us on our art journey and mental health journey ❤
    If u guys have any more advice, just comment down below. Let's help one another 😊

      sometimes for me it helps to just draw daily life, like your friends or family or even how you're feeling that day. art shouldn't be about feeling pressured to make a masterpiece every time, instead u should feel free enough to just create & make mistakes & not worry about it being perfect or not but also maybe end up with something u really like now and then.

    I’m watching this 10 pm in Hong Kong and now I miss the carefree artist I used to be as a child. I guess life rushes you by and you become obsessed with the direction and routine. Just recently turning 23 I wonder if the universe will allow me to pursue this old passion of mine

    I'm extremely impressed with the versatility!! Never seen anything like it.
    Also the music was perfect...it didn't distract, only supported the art.

    I've been into sketchkook videos alot lately so i've watched quite the amount but most i didnt like cuz they kind of were messy and not consistent, ik sketchbooks r supposed to be like tht but for me i feel like there should be two types of different sketchbooks, one where u teach urself and allow yourself to make a lot of mistakes,try different things for the first time and one where u learn, apply everything u tought urself to do, make beautiful mistakes this time, be yourself and express through ur art, i dunno if its makes sense but i dont like them being mixed cuz i love those where artists learn and express themselves better, reason ive been going through sketchbook videos is becuz i want to start my first one after years of losing motivation for just holding a pencil, now i want to try again and head dive right in... i personally think this is the most beautiful raw learning/expressing sketchbook i've seen so far and i finally know now how i want mine to be, thank you for inspiring me, i mean it, every page of this sketchbook is outstanding, i wonder if you re also a big fan of james jean? i felt like he was there among the pages and i love it even more, thank you once again 💜💜💜💜💜💜

    I can never bring myself to stick with one style as I always want to explore different ways so I've become very self conscious of not having a persistent style and that's kinda discouraged me from continuing
    but hey watching you flip through your sketchbook and seeing so many diverse drawings was mesmerising and inspiring
    thank u❤️

    This is by far the coolest and most artistic sketchbook ever.
    For the longest time I've wanted to change my vibe of my art and rn I started a new sketchbook and am desperately trying.
    But this is my ideal art. This is honestly the most beautiful sketchbook. This makes me want to try harder to get to something I'd like.

    I'm just starting out on my art 'journey' as such. I've never paid attention much to art or taken a class, but something that inspired me was videos like this, sketchbook flip throughs. To see so many styles and interpretations of a piece, or emotion. It's amazing.

    this, for me, is such an intimate video. showing your entire self through art is sometimes sensitive to show to your family and friends, let alone anyone in the world. some might be perfectly okay with it, but I just feel very protective over the things I express through my art
