So many great ideas! Even for Type A’s!

Thank you so much for this one. I needed to hear the bit about not being behind if you are starting something later than someone else..that you are going through the same learning process, just at a later time or more advanced age. I went to school for music and was told constantly by my clarinet professor that I was behind. Basically that everyone else was better than me. I worked my butt off trying to catch up but what he told me has stuck with me for DECADES. I burned out and quit after getting my degree. I have started playing a few times since then but again, had that same thought process, burned out and quit. I started playing again a few months ago and have been trying to avoid burning out on it because let’s face it. I am not a professional clarinet player and am doing this for myself at this point. I have been trying to release the perfectionism around playing this time around. I really related to everything that you said here!

Thank you so much for sharing this! It can be so difficult to learn something new (even without that type of discouragement coming from a teacher 😔). That’s incredible that you’ve picked it back up and have been pursing it again. I hope you gain so much joy from that decision!

I read a really great book this year called The Perfectionist’s Guide to Losing Control. The author describes 5 different types of perfectionists (only 1 is the stereotypical type A) and how to use your strengths to your advantage rather than let your flaws hold you back 😊

Oh that sounds like an interesting read! I’m going to see if my library has it. Thanks for the recommendation 😊

As a fellow homeschool mama, yes to laid-back homeschooling! Perhaps laid-back parenting as well.

Love that idea! I just have to determine if I’m actually a laidback parent 😂

Loved this video! Not to negate any of the amazing points you made but my favorite part was you with a middle part because that is EXACTLY how I look and feel every time I’ve tried to make that work for me…. Millennial side part for life lol

We also homeschool! I love seeing how other people approach homeschooling, so I would love a video on that if you're interested.
I would also describe myself as a - typically - laidback Type B personality and it has been interesting entering homeschool circles! I find most homeschool parents are opinionated and intense! I'm curious if you find that as well and how you nagivate that?

Ohh that’s interesting! I have a few friends who homeschool (and we’ve formed a mini co-op) and they are all pretty relaxed with their opinions HOWEVER I can 100% understand what you mean when it comes to homeschooling parents in general 😅 so far in my experience, when it comes to anything related to kids (how they sleep, what they eat, how they’re schooled), it feels like the opinions are very strong and polarizing.
My best guess is that people are passionate because they care so much about their kids and perhaps have found something that is working amazingly for their family. So typically, when I encounter those more opinionated/intense homeschool parents, I try to respond as if I was hearing someone describe an incredible vacation they went on: “that’s amazing! I’m so glad you’ve found something that works for you. I love that your experience has been so life-giving/empowering etc. etc.” Overall, I think people just want to feel affirmed lol. I can appreciate that “Charlotte Mason Island” is the best place they’ve ever visited, without feeling the need to go and live their myself 😄 Especially if it’s something I already know would not work for me or my kids haha.
Sometimes I also find it helpful to focus on the things we have in common within our homeschool philosophies. I’m more eclectic in my approach and pull from a lot of different methods, so more often than not, there is something I’m doing within our homeschool that those more opinionated parents are doing as well. Let’s talk about that! 😂 Anyways, I hope this was helpful! It can be wild out there.
