For the few that don't know it, this game had serious repercussions for the Giants. Offensive co-ordinator Bob Gibson was let go after the game and virtually the entire coaching staff was gone after the end of the season. Some say the housecleaning was the best thing that happened to the Giants which would lead the way for them to become playoff contenders in the 1980s en route to a Super Bowl win in the 1986 season.
Actually it led to lining up, usually a running back, about 15 yards behind the QB in that type of situation. I don't think I had ever seen that until after this game. Now its common to see that.
I watched this game at the time. I had no choice, living in Connecticut. They made us watch the Giants no matter how terrible they were, while other more interesting games were going on. It sucked
I've seen the NFL films highlight of the play many times before. But when you watch the original broadcast as you listen to the announcers pronounce last rites on the Eagles and running the credits, it looks many times more shocking. I imagine in real time many Giants fans were in a catatonic state.
At 1:50:19, "Wait a minute, here's a FREE foot.....I don't believe it!! The Eagles pick it up, and Herman Edwards runs it in for a touchdown!! An INCREDIBLE development!!!"
I remember watching this game as a 16 year old Eagles fan in Pennsylvania. The fallout for the Giants was huge after this loss. I think the offense coordinator was fired shortly after this and I know they fired the head coach. My grandfather used to pick up the New York Daily News and they were crushing the Giants.
Was the P.A. announcer the famous Bob Sheppard, who for years is best known for doing games at Yankee Stadium? Mister Sheppard wouldn't have believed what happened in that last minute when the Giants ended the game with a heart-breaking 19-17 loss to the Eagles on that fumble by Larry Csonka, with Herman Edwards recovering the ball for Philadelphia who scored. The Eagles would make the playoffs (beating the Giants again), while New York would need a new coach for 1979.
I still couldn't believe they lost this game communicators were not working if they were mcvay would of said take a knee Gibson was on a ego trip thank God they fired him after the game and fired Andy robustelli & John mcvay George young ray Perkins and drafted Phil Simms in the 79 draft 2 years later they drafted 56 LT and the rest was history they won super bowl 21 in 86-87 & it was for all of us especially for Harry Carson George Martin and Brad Benson who played in this game back in 78
First time I every saw the *context* of the end. I think I know why they tried to run it. The prior play the Eagles had roughed Pisarcik up while he was laying on the ground. I think the run was trying to save him additional cheap shots.
Weird to see the actual color of Kelly green. Both the Eagles and Jets abandoned the color green for a black/green mix to look more sinister. Even the Browns and Bengals now use a black/orange to appear more bad ass. If you can’t look like the Raiders just add black to everything. Close enough.
I have never understood why most stories about this game mention Gibson’s decision to hand the ball off was based on the previous play when Bill Bergey pushed Clack back into Pisarcik. That was just not true. Frank LeMaster pushed Willie Spencer back into Pisarcik two plays before. One play before the fumble was an 11 yard run by Csonka.
The one thing that irks me is official or media stepping onto the field after the touchdown at the end. They have no business being on the field until the game is over.
Word on the street is that the fix was in on this game. Giants qb knew what he was doing on that last minute fumbled handoff. At least thats what alot of oddsmakers supposedly "in the know" claim.
Forty years is a lot of time for rumors to grow. Besides, even if the quarterback fumbles the ball, that's not an automatic touchdown. Isn't it risky to wait until 20 seconds left to throw the game?
Never remove this from RUclips we need this game
Definitely for the Philadelphia Eagles and there fans, it is a nightmare for Giants fans everywhere
'You play to win the game' and he lived it.
Yesterday's Vikings/Bills game was the equivalency of this!! Wow..
East Rutherford: Home of the butt fumble and this game - the inspiration for the butt fumble.

Yep; and we all thought The Eagles would end up being the kings of the NFC east after the 1980 season.
Game was in Week 12 on Nov 19th 1978.
The day after Jonestown
The game that led to the most favorite play in football: The Victory Kneel!
lol yes
Actually it led to lining up, usually a running back, about 15 yards behind the QB in that type of situation. I don't think I had ever seen that until after this game. Now its common to see that.

We Granite Staters had to watch the Jints because the Pats would get blacked out 7-8 times per year.
Because of this game everyone was fired from coaches to front office , they brought in people that started to build that great Giants team of 1986
This is why teams started doing the kneel down at the end of games.
I agree but how come plays before that he fell to the ground
Don criqui is the man

Watching this game again on YT, I didn’t realize how much the Giants dominated the Eagles in this game.
Made me sick all over again.
The Miracle in the Meadowlands.

Great download!
This might have been the best thing that happened the Giants in the late 70s because of a new front office and the draft look what would be coming
I remember watching it but I didn't see the fumble live. Silly me .. I thought the game was over.
Man I know this really well
1:50:16 where the fun happens
This was two years before I became an Eagles fan. I really wish I had seen this live.

Yes, that's Bob Sheppard. He kept doing Giants games even after they stopped playing at Yankee Stadium.
Don Criqui has called some unbelievable games

Herm Edwards, He played to win the game
LOL, "you don't just play to play it!"
In the 70's everything was bigger & wider...see the Giants pant stripes, need I say more.
Classic game!
Herm is still the man
I still couldn't believe they lost this game communicators were not working if they were mcvay would of said take a knee Gibson was on a ego trip thank God they fired him after the game and fired Andy robustelli & John mcvay George young ray Perkins and drafted Phil Simms in the 79 draft 2 years later they drafted 56 LT and the rest was history they won super bowl 21 in 86-87 & it was for all of us especially for Harry Carson George Martin and Brad Benson who played in this game back in 78
That one play alone is all you need to know about the Giants of the 1970s
The lowest point of Zonk's illustrious career. X(
Larry's lowest point was leaving Miami to play for the Memphis Southmen of the WFL coached by, yes.....John McVay
Jaws threw 3 ints but still win
First time I every saw the *context* of the end. I think I know why they tried to run it. The prior play the Eagles had roughed Pisarcik up while he was laying on the ground. I think the run was trying to save him additional cheap shots.
The Eagles still have to at least touch Pisarcik to end the down. If you look at that play Pisarcik got kneed in the head, but by him own teammate.
kinda sorta, but not exactly.
Csonka didn't want the Ball

Unrelated note. This was the day after the Jonestown Massacre.
Don criqui Sonny Jorgensen

It was Csonka’s fault.
Yes he was and deserved so he never coached again
If it wasn't for this unlikely win the Eagles wouldn't have made the playoffs
58:42 "...Pisarcik, having perhaps his best day as a Giant" - ooh, the irony just burns...
Bottom line Joe pisarcik should of defied Gibson
Gibson was canned after the game.
People forget the rules were different back then a quarterback just couldn't sit on the ball and not get hit so that's why they handed it off.
People forget how difficult it is for a starting NFL QB and a HOF rb to complete a simple handoff to win the game.
The one thing that irks me is official or media stepping onto the field after the touchdown at the end.
They have no business being on the field until the game is over.
1:50:10 is what you came to see.
1:50:20
Take this down immediately!
Word on the street is that the fix was in on this game. Giants qb knew what he was doing on that last minute fumbled handoff. At least thats what alot of oddsmakers supposedly "in the know" claim.
Everybody knew the fix was in.
The Las Vegas odds makers all knew, the referees all knew, the statisticians all knew.
Forty years is a lot of time for rumors to grow. Besides, even if the quarterback fumbles the ball, that's not an automatic touchdown. Isn't it risky to wait until 20 seconds left to throw the game?
Word on the street is you retards are retards.
The commentator got karma
Didn't have to hand the ball off. Looks like the fix was in.
