Hey luke bro, you should watch and react to tomorrows UEFA Champions League 2023/24 group stage live draw. Dont forget to make a reaction video on that. Trust me there is lot of draw mechanism that you are going to learn which might blow your mind.
Please bear in mind, this is an overview of 433 , each example of a team that uses it he mentioned will run it slightly differently, and none of them will run it exactly as this video describes
Johan Cruyff was one an all time great player in the 70's/early 80's, who went on to became a great coach, he always had a very sharp mind for the game, he was coached by Rinus Michels, who was really a mentor of Cruyff, they thought up the total football concept, originally at Ajax and later the Dutch national team
Formations are named mostly after how thry are set up in defence, since in offence players move more freely. If you check Manchester City now they will still have that 433 in defence, but in offence it easily becomes something like 3223 So the difference between a 433 and a 451 is only that the left and the right attacker drop back in to midfield in defence to form a line of 5
Keepers being good with the ball at their feet is more a modern thing in the last 5-10 years, prior to this it was less of a factor. For instance Jose Mourinho's 00's Chelsea team, did not rely on a "ball playing" Keeper, due to how they positioned themselves, but ball playing keepers have become more and more required due to how many teams play a high press these days. 00's was much less about high press and about solid low block defences (at least in the EPL, less so in La Liga).
@@chicks-on-the-looseSweeper keepers have existed since a long time. Lev Yashin was basically a sweeper keeper. It just wasnt as popular as it is now.
Pressing is very close to basketball pressing - you basically force other team to bad places and passes usually with positioning not even tackling or fully committing to ballhandler just like basketball, usually you press in football around the half line just like basketball but now much more teams do the high pressing (equivivalent of fullcourt press) but it is very tiring for full game and exploitable with some long balls and counters
About Liverpool's problems last season and the beginning of this season. Liverpool were one of the best teams ever in the seasons leading up to last. They won every trophy available within the last 4 or 5 season and would have won even more if Pep's City weren't around. What happened last season was that a lot of their players, especially in the midfield, began to age out. This season they lost 5 midfielders and brought in 3 new ones. They lack cohesion right now but are a very dangerous team.
The reason Liverpool look suspect defensively is that the midfielders they brought in were mostly very attack minded. Szoboslai is definitely an attacking mid and Mac Allister can play more reserved but usually in a double pivot. Endo is the only DM they signed this window. The reason for that is that they missed out on two key targets in the summer. Also, they have a guy in Right Back called Alexander-Arnold who is one of the best creative players in Europe, but can't defend. What would happen was that Jordan Henderson would play on the right side of the midfield 3 and cover for him when he went up the pitch to attack, but now Henderson is gone and last season his legs were gone so he couldn't cover as much ground anymore. Basically in my opinion Liverpool have a personnel problem in midfield. All good players, but not necessarily the right profile.
I think the loss of wijnaldum cost liverpool their midfield balance. Not the best player ever but smart. He knew when to keep his position or join in the attack. Kept it simple so others could shine. And had the technique and stamina to cope with everything
@@celsus7979I think it's more that they didn't have a good succession plan. Wijnaldum was entering his 30's. He could probably have stuck around for another season or 2 but letting him go made sense as long as they replaced him adequately. They didn't. They brought in Thiago who's excellent but doesn't have Wijnaldum's physicality and work rate. You want a guy who can run like hell, but who's also good on the ball. Thiago is just excellent on the ball but doesn't do enough without it at this point for a high pressing team.
The thing is that in football it's very hard to move on from a golden generation. As generational talents age out it's very hard to replace and progress, both because the club usually doesn't plan adequately to replace their star assets but also because replacing them at all is extremely difficult.
Liverpool still run a 4-3-3 on paper and in defense but when in possession they run a 3-2-2-3 with their Right Back Alexander-Arnold inverting next to the Defensive Midfielder to form a box midfield. About your Liverpool situation question. Liverpool's system requires immense athletes so that theyre able to continuously press and cover ground for basically the entire game, its why they were so good during the 2017-2022 period. The cost of playing this style is that the players get worn out very quickly because of the constant running and pressing requires fresh legs and transfers every few years. Liverpool however didn't do that and so they were playing with an old and ragged team that can't physically play the way the system requires, this coupled with constant injuries to their midfield and defense is what resulted in Liverpools downfall last season. They have sold and replaced most of the deadwood and do look like a better squad than last season but still not at the level of their 2017-2019 selves.

abysmal start might be too harsh, convincing win against villa and two losses against ManC and Lpool. I think getting into top4 again would be an insane achievement
With all due respect what Newcastle did last season was kind of a miracle the quality of players in the squad aren't really up to par with the likes of city and arsenal so yeah getting into the top 4 will be a huge achievement
When it comes to pressing it varies, teams like liverpool press with every single player as soon as they lose the ball but then youll get an atletico madrid where only the front two press and everyone else sits off, some teams press all over the pitch, some teams only press in the opponents half some teams only press in their own half, some teams only press in the midfield. They all have their benefits and issues
some goalkeepers are not good with their feet and thus feel pressure when they have to perform shot passes, they may be comfortable with long passes. so you need a goalie that's comfortable with their feet, someone who wont fumble the ball under pressure if the team style is playing from the back
fields make a big difference ine how you play a certain team, im a barca fan but we struggle against low teams due to their low block play styles against big teams (meaning they just have straight defensive vibes and counter attack only) also they usually have shorter width pitches so they sometimes pass out of bounds due to them being used to their wider pitch at home. There also is times where teams just out play them.

The way this formations are going to work is very reliant on the players they have and their personality. Also, it's the base for understanding certain tactics but it will not matter that much because a lot of times players will follow the situation of the game rather than sticking with a certain formation many times per game, cause the opponents will also try to dismantle your plan. For example, a center back in teams like Barça can go up to the box to divide rivals and create a number superiority, and since no one had that player assigned in defense cause they are not supposed to go that high, it forces them to make the decision: Do I stick with the player I was already defending or I go to cover him? If they stick, the CB will keep breaking defense lines to the top an even create a chance for a shot themselves, and if they go to cover, that leaves their previous marks free to offer or attack. This disadjustment of seconds can be even of multiple defenders if they're not communicating well who is the one that will try to cover the new player, and leave multiple men free of mark, which can cause other defenders to leave their previous man alone, trying cover the new free attackers cause it's closer to a good receiving and dangerous position than the mark they had before. This will leave the CB making the rol of a controller or creator midfielder for that play, which can cause tremendous damage and caos in the assigned marks that can produce a clear goal chance. What I want to say is this: Positions are constantly changing and new task are added to the players in those positions to try to confuse the other team. That's what the "false 9" of Guardiola with Messi made, change the behavior of a position to create doubts in the defenders so new opportunities and spaces become exploitable, and they never become easily predictable. That's the work of the coaches. Also players change their positions forever. Busquets is a midfield defender that had crazy vision to make passes and act like midfield creator but far back in the pitch, adding his possession and 1 touch passing skills added the rol of a controller midfielder too, that weren't needed in his position cause keeping the ball there and risking losing it was too dangerous, made him probably the best player in his position ever. Before him MD's mostly required of good, strong defenders with anticipation instinct to cut rival attacks and average passing skills that didn't need to create scoring chances, now many teams ask for this kind of atributes there.
Luke and you should watch the match between barcelona and real madrid in 2011 it is available on youtube and it is the opportunity to see how the best team in the history of barca execute the tiki taka in formation of 433 against the best team in counter attack of the world
It is generally useful that every player can play with the ball and that is not exclusive just to 433. Video confuses 433, which is just formation on the pitch with tactics, strategies and philosophies. Two teams can have 433 formation and play completely differently.
I really recommend watching Andrea Pirlo. He played CDM. In terms of playing long balls from the back, I can't say I've seen many like him. Hard to press, unbelievably accurate, this is one of those dudes that could really turn a neutral moment of a game into a highlight. He is retired, but never forgotten.
Note something to remember with teams like Pep's Barcelona and now Man City they keep the ball for long periods passing it among the players, exploiting space and creating out numbering the opponent. And as a result opposing teams get tired and weary of running around like head-less chichen trying to get the ball. With this Man City and Barcelona usually exposses and exploit this situation.
You were right in your assessment. There are different types of pressing in football. There's a pressing high up the pitch, pressing the final third. But there's also a midfield pressing, where you lure opponents into certain spaces to then crowd them and make them turn over the ball. Even in a low block you press certain spaces, that you don't want the opponent to posses the ball in. So smart observation from you 👍
i would be interested in your opinion/reaction of a 3-4-3. for me it´s one of the best tactics (counter tactics) against a 4-3-3 tiki-taka. my newest recommendation: watch spain vs japan from the recent women´s world cup. spain had 75% (!) ball posession and lost 4:0. also last years german cup mönchengladbach vs bayern (also a great example what "defending forwards" is), ithink bayern lost 4:1
Hey Corey, if you’re interested to watch more about the inverted full-back role pioneered by Cruyff’s Barcelona, implemented by Guardiola’s City, and now used by Arteta’s Arsenal there’s an interview with Arsenal’s Zinchenko on the Arsenal official channel. It’s a good watch. The video is called: The Breakdown | Zinchenko on how to play as an inverted full-back Zinchenko played in this position at City for Guardiola and now at Arsenal. There’s a bit of match game footage in the video so I don’t know how good for RUclips the video is, but it’s nice hearing a bit about it from the perspective of a player.
Just want to say that a formation does not equate to a style of play. The 4-3-3 can be used to play ball centered football like Cruff, but also can be used to play more defense to counter-attack styke of play. Also, in some cases like in the ManCity vs Madrid 4-0 game, a team can play with two midfielders in the winger position (Bernardo Silva and Grealish). A type of player that is not a pure classic winger, more focused on 1v1, opening up the field by staying closer to the sideline, but a "mediapunta" (as we say in spain) which likes to pass the ball and make more interior play, while also having great 1v1 and finishing potential. Iniesta was sometimes used in that role. This allows for a more controlled game as this players are often really difficult to get back the ball. Just to show how these formations are really dependant on your style of play.
The creative midfielder has basically the equivalent job that Tom Brady has in american football vision and sharp passing skills so if you look at Messi thats the player he had to become once Iniesta left he began to create the play and somehow still was able to be in the box to finish his own play that he created thats like making the quarterback breakout pass to the wide reciever and also being the person that then goes on to score the touchdown all in one attacking play.. and THIS IS WHY MESSI S THE GOAT AND CANNOT BE COMPARED TO A PLAYER THAT ONLY SCORES!!!
@@CoreyMcKinneyFC Yeah. He's always in Top 7 in greatest players lists. One of the most creative players , a 3 Time Ballon d'or winner. Only Messi (7) and Cristiano Ronaldo (5) have More.
On pressing: usually you want the team to be grouped for a press. Coordination is key. Sometimes you will see a 2/3 player press but that's not very effective, the other team always has more passes. You need for it to be intense and the whole team need to be together to not let spaces in between lines tha can be exploited by the oponent. That's why you see defensive-minded teams stay back, they don't think it's worth the risk. They'd rather wait for you to come up and get you in a counter. Some teams like bayern use a mix between the two: High pressure and counter. But it's not called a counter, more a quick transition after getting the ball back high up the pitch. Barcelona and other posession driven teams also do that but they are more oriented on build up play.
Man despite me actually running a 5 defence whenewer I play football because it’s better for me as a playmaker despite being 16 and just playing for fun with friends.
You were right about his comment about ballplaying keepers and defenders. This has little to do with the formation, but with the style they want to play.

What I would like to say is that football on the pitch isn't that rigid. Players, especially in attack (in the final third of the pitch), improvise a lot and movements that can be seen are rather intuitive than strict "plays" that coach drawn beforehand. It is not like American football or basketball in that regard. They are not calling different plays every attack. it is much more spontaneous. There are some principles players need to know and all these movements and plays happen naturally.
4-3-3 is actually a super good formation, but as the video said, u need to have good passers and a team mentally to rebuild if becomes too risky some plays... i guess the best formation is 4-2-3-1, that allows the wingers to be less "agressive", and they can help better in defense... u also can attack with quick passes and break lines with moments of brilliance, depending of the quality that the players have, ofc. Kinda Like Man City played against your Newcasle, Corey hahaha
Yes Tiki Taka was 433 but its very different to how Liverpool play 433 and even how Pep's Man City do 433 (even though Pep is responsible for Tiki taka style) Here is a good video analysing how Bayern broke Tiki Taka ruclips.net/video/h7Oq3GcTMT0/видео.html
2:18 Liverpool used to be one of the best defensive teams from 2017-2021 2022 there defense was okay but in 22/23 (last season) they were terrible in defending thats the main reason why they didn’t get champions league football and finished 5th place. why did they fall off? well it was not a tactical problem but a quality one. Trent alexander arnold (rb) is not a defensive player. robertson (lb) is not physically strong. van dijk (cb) is getting old. konate (cb) is not mature enough. gomez and matip (both cb) are not good players 😅. and they really need a left footed center back because they basically have zero. And they need a new young strong center back because van dijk is getting older which equals weaker.
Liverpool is not running 4-3-3 anymore. They do it on paper, but we all know they push Trent (rightback) into the midfield. So in offence the play 3 2 2 3. Defence is somewhat of a 4 5 1
Trent and Robertson are bad examples. They are good fullbacks but not either of them shifts into center backs, watch teams playing with a Center back on the right or left who shifts during attack. Example again Arsenal, Man city. They play with 3 cb's and 2 of them at the middle and 1 on the right or left depends on the tactics, interesting thing is the full back no longer goes to support the winger but support the midfield and become a extra midfielder.
Ball playing goal keepers are sweeper keepers, they wont be neceesarily good at shot stoping, and shot stopping goal keepers sometimes arent good at ball playing.
Hi mate, there's a channel called football made simple you should check out. It breaks down tactics from games being played each season. Very detailed and simple to understand .
Let me give you an idea of the infuence of Johan Cruyf had. I'm not part of the orange army (=dutch supporters) so i have no bias when i say Untill Messi came along, there was only one player ever better than Cruyf and that was Pele. His influence as a coach was even bigger, without him no tiki taka....no barcelona dominance And then i havent even mentionned his "funny/philosophical" oneliners that have found a way into the dutch dictionary. Stadiums carry his name, etc.... ....
I'm not a fan of 4-3-3. I find it really boring because most teams in the 2010s tried to play it due to Spanish / Barcelona success. It's like when you hear a good song on the radio too many times... Next time you hear it you cringe. Tiki taka - possession at all costs is BORING. My preferred formation now is 3-4-2-1 (wing backs, low narrow block when defending, 2 creative playmaker behind a false 9)
I don't think it was abysmal start of the season for Newcastle. They faced Liverpool and City, two tough teams. In both games, they competed very well. It's just three games, Newcastle looks like one of the best teams in the league despite those losses.
That is true. Still a lot of time left to be top four. Moreover, I think even the top 5 can get to Champions League from next season as per the new format of the competition. @@CoreyMcKinneyFC

The video is called: The Breakdown | Zinchenko on how to play as an inverted full-back
Zinchenko played in this position at City for Guardiola and now at Arsenal.
Just so you know. Johan Cruyff is One of the Greatest Players in football history , first.
Then, He became a Great Coach /Manager after retiring.
Yoooooo that is so dope
You should watch and react to tomorrows UEFA Champions League 2023/24 group stage live draw. Dont forget to make a reaction video on that.
Trust me there is lot of draw mechanism that you are going to learn which might blow your mind who knows.
And triangle is a box midfield these days.
Corey did you see the the group Newcastle was placed in for the champions league this season?
Doing a video of it VERY soon! I can’t believe how unlucky we just got with this grouping!
Yeah they have a pretty difficult group, they call it the group of death but if Newcastle manages to go through the next round then my props for them!
U need to watch coaches voice sean dyche
Corey Trust me, watch Messi is a dog, is the best compliment ever. no joke. It’s a poem almost.
Before 433 there was 442 and after 433 came the 4231
Fluidity of movement within 433 is not necessary in 433. The video confuses formation with tactics, strategies and philosophies.
Yes Tiki Taka was 433 but its very different to how Liverpool play 433 and even how Pep's Man City do 433 (even though Pep is responsible for Tiki taka style)
Here is a good video analysing how Bayern broke Tiki Taka

Thank you!
Tottenham already disappointing Luke, out of the EFL Cup already 😅
Griezmann as a target man and Moise Kean as a false nine are actually terrible examples from the video. There are some inaccuracies in the video.
Hi mate, there's a channel called football made simple you should check out. It breaks down tactics from games being played each season. Very detailed and simple to understand .
I will check it out!
Spells yohan cruyff
Ah, yeah my southern English definitely misses that “y” sound
John Cruyff?😂😂 It's pronounced "Yohan Ctuyff"
I’m a southern American man I try my hardest 🤣
I don't think it was abysmal start of the season for Newcastle. They faced Liverpool and City, two tough teams. In both games, they competed very well. It's just three games, Newcastle looks like one of the best teams in the league despite those losses.
It was abysmal in the sense of we definitely had the Liverpool game won and then blew it, and the Man City game was extremely frustrating to watch
That is true. Still a lot of time left to be top four. Moreover, I think even the top 5 can get to Champions League from next season as per the new format of the competition. @@CoreyMcKinneyFC
You need to react to Pep Guardiola talking about tactics.
Bro, Newcastle in the group of death of CL with PSG, AC Milan and Dortmund.
I know 😩😩
And yes, please do react to Champions League Group Stage draw tomorrow.
