To the likes of some clubs JWP & Kudus are too cheap in the market to look at. They feel the need to be looking at players that have a £100million price tag to justify how big their club is.
I have to respectfully disagree with Luke's take about pressing from the start when coming up against a team that's higher quality than yours. Sitting back on defense (parking the bus) may lead to more shots on your goal but a well trained and organized team can limit the amount of high quality chances the attacking team gets due to crowding the box and areas in front of it while also drawing the opponents higher up to support possession which you can expose on the counter. While if you press a team better than you high up the pitch more often than not they'll be able pass through your press and when they do your team is out of position leading to much easier clear cut opportunities to score. Possession, number of shots, xG, field tilt, and other stats are cool but they can sometimes be misleading the only stat that really matters is the score. Really enjoying you and Luke's journey into the beautiful game keep up the awesome work!
I think it’s important to remember the last 3 seasons for West Ham have been 6th place 7th place and whilst last season wasn’t the best for various reasons… they won a major european trophy which they put all their energy into… They have also invested this summer window into good players that make the squad stronger all round than previous seasons even with Rice
Being that excited as an english team to win the conference league is embarrassing. There's nothing major about it. ffs sake they had to beat one mid table italian team The money west ham gets from tv rights is 4x the budget their opponents have to run their entire team, if not more It's like a grown man being proud of winning a boxing match against a kid
Lol They made the conference league to give teams from minor leagues a possibility to play in europe too To come in with a team from england with all the budget and ability to sign players and then act like you've won a real trophy is pathetic
West Ham are massive!! Honestly everyone was worried about the transfer window until we got Alvarez and JWP and then we even got Mavropanoz and Kudus. And a lot of ppl aren’t exactly excited about how we play but ultimately it’s about the strategy being effective which they clearly have been. Great start to our season!
Another club to look at is Brentford. Last season they were the only team to beat Manchester City home and away, they massacred Man United and beat Liverpool. They would alternate moments of high press with a mid to low block and exploit long balls very effectively. Goalkeeper David Raya had a great passing range and striker Ivan Toney was great at hold up play, winning aerial duels and got 20 league goals. This season they are without Raya and Toney is facing a long ban for gambling charges but they are still electric and have some of the best underlying numbers in the league. No big team wants to go against them. They also alternate between a back 4 and a back 5. Their coach, Thomas Frank, is probably pound for pound the best manager in the league bar maybe Brighton's De Zerbi.
i remember youtube suggestions about ManU fans reacting to the Brentford loss, the team spirit wasn't thereand Maguire and DeGea had stinker performance
Randomly discovered this channel. I’m a West Ham season ticket holder and have been for years. I can’t stand Moyesball. But maybe Brighton was a turning point. We usually get murdered there. This time it wasn’t mindless hoofing the ball to Antonio - it was precision , deadly counter attacking. Impossible to defend. Alvarez and JWP have proved to be perfect foils to Antonio who I’ve written off again and again but keeps coming back for more. The guy’s a monster. Key will be how to integrate Kudus’s flair into this side. The style will have to change then. Whatever - you can’t say it’s not interesting. Great video. IRONS !!
The reason I think that this is so successful for West Ham is due to the amount of tall, physical players good at heading in their team. Giving them a even greater advantage in defending crosses and attacking set pieces. As well as the key importance in Antonio’s physicality which makes him a better player to hold onto the ball while waiting for others to join the counter
Another thing about West Ham, that ppl may not pay attention, is the sinergy between Paquetá (probably the most talented player on the hammers), Bowen and Benrahma... this last two players are super fast, and they can break likes for Paquetá do his "magic", or, to find them with a imaginative pass... they also move from wing to center and switch positions to confuse the defense and allow midfielders like Ward Prowse to come in, for example... Also, Corey, West ham, may not have the bests defensive players (i would say average)... but bcause of their sistem, like u watched in the video, allows them to outnumber the oponentes... and recover the ball to play with that quick and creative attack, which is the strength of the team, ofc. Super fun to watch... reminds me of Leicester 2015/16. Who ended up Champions in the PL.
One thing you’ll do, probably without realising, is appreciating these different styles of play. It won’t be for how pretty it is to watch, but it’s because of how they’re doing something against the norm and making it work. Teams like Moyes’ West Ham, Dyche’s Burnley, Hughes’ Stoke, it wasn’t nice to watch but it was fun to see because it’s different and they’d bring some shock results, usually against Arsenal. Arsene Wenger, legendary Arsenal manager, wanted to change throw in rules because of how long Stoke’s Rory Delap’s throw ins were. Imagine how boring the premier league would be if every team was play out from the back, high press and try to control possession.
I watch both NFL and soccer frequently. The general principals of how to play defence / defense in the NFL and football/soccer are similar. However the big difference to soccer and NFL is how offside works. You could throw a burner on the field in soccer to counter this style but the burner would almost always be offside as defenses at the highest level in soccer are very rarely out of line in their mid block and know exactly when to push up to play team offside. If the other team does play a very fast player or show that they want to run in behind the defense then another option West Ham can and will do is push slightly deeper (low block) to reduce the space between the defense and the goalkeeper thus limiting the space the burner has to work in.
Apart from West Ham’s poor form in the prem last season which was followed by the euro win the last 3 seasons they’ve been a club on the rise 6th 7th semi final europa league not to shabby. Look at the spine of that team it’s strong Areola Zouma Aguerd Paqueta Alvarez JWP Bowen Antonio like I said strong.
Great to see you delving into the tactics of the game. The way West Ham play is typical of a David Moyes team and because it’s based on nullifying the threat of the other team rather than creating, it can have mixed results, especially during home games where the onus is usually on the home team to attack. The way to beat teams with a low or mid block is to either pin them back and use triangles to unlock the defence (Man City are the best at this, Arsenal are pretty good at it too) or to draw them out of that low/mid block and create instability in their structure. Brighton tried to do that but failed because West Ham stuck to their mid/low block plan. I think West Ham had something like 25% possession in that game but scored 3 goals. But like I mentioned earlier, you can’t get away with having such low possession numbers when you’re playing at home (half of your league games are at home) so that’s where the mixed results can come in. It’s a great tactic to employ away from home though and so far this season it’s worked well. The key will be keeping key players fit - Antonio the striker who is basically used as a battering ram. They can play the ball long to him when they regain possession and he will hold it up to allow teammates to join him in the attacking 3rd of the pitch - Bowen who is the fast, right winger supports Antonio and scores a lot of their goals. If either of these players get injured then it’s a problem for West Ham. Anyways, keep up the good work lads. I love that you’ve found a niche in an overcrowded market of American reactors watching football but not really knowing what they’re watching.
It's not accurate to say West Ham don't attack or that they only counter attack. But in some games, that is the predominant tactic. I've watched almost every game in recent seasons and they have had some great attacks via the wings cutting back.
corey you asked to luke if that was alvarez, he is not one of the two midfielders who are giving the passes forward. Alvarez is the defensive midfielder just behind the other two midfielders. Alvarez his job is mainly to support the defense. He is a beast, lot of yellow cards though haha
a mediocre high press is a lot easier to carve apart than a well coached low block, its not exciting but a well crafted and thought out defence is just as important and creative as a free-flowing fluid attack
West Ham are good and they might finish quite high, but they will have problems with teams like Man City, Liverpool and Arsenal. It's the oldest tactic in the book (partly because it works) but that means its most managers have a method of counter.
Everyone has problems with teams like Man City, Liverpool and Arsenal - the difference is many teams with inferior players try to beat the richest teams at their own game which is almost bound to fail... but one can take a different approach and get the result because you seek to minimise their strengths and exploit their weaknesses instead of just going toe to toe and getting whooped!
Yes! we know all their tatics too and all the other teams know how we play. We have been playing the same style of football since Moyes became manager in 2019, second tenure. The style of play works, we finished 6th then 7th in the league and last season won an european trophy although our league position was poor. Yes teams know how we play but they still find it very difficult to break us down plus the squad has improved this year even with the loss of Rice. One good striker would complete the squad but I believe that last squad place is being filled by Jesse Lingard. Mixed feelings about that one. Happy to be a Hammer at the moment COYI
its interesting hearing the point about how its not sustainable against the big teams being a west ham fan, its actually most effective against big teams who want to have the ball, where the tactic falls down is when we face teams who have less quality than us and we are forced to have possession, we find it very hard to break teams down if they let us have the ball but against big teams like chelsea and brighton who would prefer to dominate possession we thrive because they push high and leave space allowing us to counter, you can’t counter if the other team are camped on their own box forcing you to have possession
About West Ham, the question is can they sustain that run of form. I personally think it's somewhat sustainable. I don't think they'll end up anywhere near top 4 (but then again Leicester won the league that one time so who knows?) but they'll have a solid season and can fight for an European spot. This style of football is very effective but it also has a risk aspect because it invites the opposition to have possession in their third. A lapse in concentration or two can kill them in matches. The other problem is that there are questions about whether they can perform in matches where they're expected to have more possession than the opponent. They did well against Luton, though, and they have enough firepower from set pieces and players like Paqueta and Bowen that this might not be an issue for them.
What you have to keep in mind when thinking about football tactics is that it all depends on the personnel on the team. Players can have widely different physical attributes and technical and tactical skills, even at the same positions, and the tactic used by the coach seeks to take advantage of the player's strengths. As footballmeta showed, there are certain key players like Antonio, Alvarez, and Ward Prose whose skillset and physicality suits these tactical choices, and their ability to maintain their performance in executing it will be the reason of its success or defeat.
They play 1 bank of 5 and second bank of 4 at the back then hit the opposition on the break. It’s a frustrating watch but who cares when we win. Roll on 16/09/23 we play city . Alvarez pulls in the 1st line to support the back line. Leaving the other midfielders to protect the second line.
West Ham could not have they ball against Manchester City even if they wanted to. Bayern Munich are one of the most possession based teams in the world and they could hardly get the ball against Manchester City last season.
Love seeing you and Luke getting in to “real” football. Jokes aside. I’m actually a NFL supporter as well even though I am from Sweden. Looking forward to the new season really much.
@@CoreyMcKinneyFC true. I think playing 2 to 3 styles is very important for Epl managers. Cause teams figure u out quickly especially if you don't have world class players that can win u games individually.
West Ham had a lot of possession against Luton and broke them down. They were the first team to themselves use similar tactics with a low block counter-attacking football. West Ham switched their playing tactics.
West Ham have a stupid amount of attacking talent to attack without having to play counter attacking too. Ward, Bowen, Benrahma, Paquetá and now Kudus. That is a tricky devastating attacking selection. West Ham will do very well. Also last season they tried to change the style and it didn’t work for them, and certain players like Paquetá needed half the season to adjust and settle to the style & pace of the ELP.
They missed off that West Ham had more shots on target against Brighton. Not unusual for The Irons to shoot 50-75% accuracy. Also, in the last three years they have finished 6th, 7th, semi-final (Europa Cup), 14th, winners (European Conference Cup), currently (early on) 4th. Everyone keeps focussing on that 14th, which occurred in the same season that they won a cup and a better year than Liverpool, Brighton, Chelsea and Tottenham. 14th is a blip, caused by them trying to play like everyone else.
The mid block / counter attack West Ham tactic is not just going to magivally fall apart. Teams are not just working out what the Hammers are doing either. They hsve been doing it for 3 seadons prior to this one. Whether it is ultimately succesful in an individual match or not will depend on each game. But there is nothing possession baded, padsing teams can do other than just be better create and score more than the opposition. That is the name of the game. So no, they are not gonna get found out and fall apart. Results will vary though and they may suffer surprising defeats whilst also beating higjer quality teams grom time to time. They are certainly making it tough for their opponent to score though and that is a great foundation.
Only it's not route one, we don't hoof it from one end to the other then chase, we build up from the back but are patient in waiting for the right pass to move forward, yes we aim for Antonio at times but we are playing not just good football, but technically we have improved akin to Italian or Spanish style football in my opinion, more resolute, ⚒
A few things to mention, west ham beat both Man U and Man City last season, beating Utd in the league and knocking city out the cup while we've already beaten both Brighton and Chelsea away this season and the season we finished sixth we missed out on the top 4 by 2 points. Regarding your comment about not being organised, it's quite the opposite because if your team isn't 100% drilled and disciplined you will leave space but when it's done properly then there isn't space and teams then end up taking long shots. It's not particularly pretty but it is effective when done properly. In regards to the offside trap you have misunderstood it, when you play offside the defence is usually right up near the halfway line and leave loads of space behind and the defence have to be switched on to catch the attacking team offside whereas west ham play a low block which is the opposite as there is no space to run in behind as everyone is back towards the 18 yard line.
Well, it's super early but they won't finish in the top 4 😅. To give you perspective of how hard it is, there have been only 3 teams outside of traditional top6 (Liverpool, man utd, man city, arsenal, spurs, chelsea) to ever finish in the top 4 since the premier league era (since 1992) and those are blackburn rovers in 1995, Leicester City 2016, and Newcastle last season.
Yeah. Realistically, top 6/top 7 should be the target/expectation. The big 6 clubs you mentioned, will almost always fill the top 4, and 1 or 2 of the next 2 spots. Its the rest of the clubs that are trying to break into this pack, and get that sweet european money, that makes the premier league quite unique. Leicester had their spell, although its obviously over now. West Ham have had a few years lately. Newcastle are definitely in the conversation, and with their financial backing probably have the best shot at making it a big 7. Brighton & Brentford look really exciting with potential to get in, and stay in the pack for several years. And then there's always the possibility of 1 of many other clubs having a single great season punching above their weight. It keeps a lot more pressure on the big clubs, than maybe some other leagues do. And in a way, makes how dominant Man City have become even more impressive.
With JWP and our ability to score from set pieces, means teams that want to sit back have to come forward when we score, which opens up more space for us to take advantage of
Yoo guys. Little bit out of context. Did you watch the Arsenal vs Man Utd match? That's was mental, it always a treat to see our United fans friend got melt down. It is similar like seeing your cowboys fans friend witnessed last second hail merry TD against them or last seconds interception TD
*They basically almost playing the same way Morocco played on world cup except from semi final and third position game when he missed some key players and he changed.. . And i now understand why they wanted to sign Enesyri the striker of Morocco and Sevilla coz he plays the 4-1-4-1 with Morocco and he's so good at pressing so that makes sense why they wanted him so bad. That's how Walid the Coach of Morocco brought morocco to semi finals despite him taking the team only 3 months before the world cup*
I think it's really good that you're interested in this game and are analysing it properly. it's good to compare it to NFL if it helps to understand, don't worry about offending anyone! I have followed the game since I was a kid and didn't know many of the tactics that you've have learnt over this period. (i've learnt them with you) I have loved it for the passion and not really considered how it works. I hope you continue with your coaching badges and enjoy it more along the process. Even though you are new to it you're picking up more than I have in 30 years, thanks for the videos and keep it up!
8:05 it exactly need to be organised, because if your only 3 counter-attacks are wasted because of bad pass or lack of understanding each other ideas, it's not gonna work 15:00 it's definitely a good idea since generally, with tactics like this, their block is in the defensive zone, but here their def block is way up so a fast player could be devastating, but the counter to that is how well they play the offside trap, if they do, you also might not have many opportunities their tactic is really targeting way bigger teams so they have to think about something better against smaller teams, but they got the depth now so it will be interesting to see what they come up with in terms of tactic football is relatively close to american football, in terms skills it's closer to basketball, that's what i discovered watching american react to this sport
Leicester won the PL averaging only 40% possession over the season in 2016. The counter attack was deadly - lob the ball over the top to Vardy and he was too fast and clinical in front of goal.
This is the tactic WestHam used too get 6th and 7th and European Semi final in the previous seasons.Last season we tried going to a possession, passing based team and as the season went on,we were getting dangerously close too relegation and conceding loads of sloppy goals . This season we have gone back to what we was good at, so I'm not sure if teams will figure us out. It's a frustrating tactic to play against as WestHam experienced with Luton the other day
12:29 want to see an offside trap? look at United's dissallowed goal vs arsenal. Best example of an old fashioned offside trap. The last defender steps up at the very last moment forcing the attacker to be offside with no chance to recover.
Watch last year's match between West Ham and FCSB in the Conference League played on September 8, 2022 and see what FCSB is playing and where did this tactic come from.
The big test will be West Hams next two games? If their tactics work v Man City and Liverpool then they could provide a big shock this season? They've had a tough start with no gimmees unlike some teams who've had easyish starts?
Old school "parking the bus" has a name: catenaccio. Very effective and popular in the 80's, mastered by Italian teams and the Italian national team. Boring AF. But then, if it works, it works... 🎉
Btw, never said that catenaccio is the same... I was just trying to imply that ultra defensive systems used to be really popular long ago. Until they figured out how to break them.
You can't really run them down cuz they sit inside their zone. Running down the defenders only work when you have big spaces and the defending team has only one defensive line left. They gonna just sit in their zone with layered defense. You might run pass the first layer but you need to be messi to have the ball under control before the second defensive layer strike you. Passing the ball with one touch inside the small space is really advance skill set. Only the best group of players in the world could pull this off. Even then if they setup semi man to man marking , they could reduce the effectiveness of one touch pass. This tactic is setup in a way that you can play and win against better teams with better players. The textbook play against this is to try long range shot at goal and force set pieces near the penalty box. It's really annoying to play against. People don't like to watch this kind of playstyle that is the downside. Not having the ball is by design. So the other teams gonna push up and leave big space between the goal and center back for their attacking players to run into. They use fast and long passes so that the other team don't get the time and chance to recover.
An offside trap is when the defender collectively move up at the same time so the opposing forwards ends up offside. It's kinda risky, because if one of the defenders is not fast enough on the trap and stays in his position (thus nullifying the offside), the opposing forwards just get alot of free space with the goalkeeper.
We played this way under Moyes finishing 6th and 7th in consecutive seasons only going back 2 & 3 years ago. There were a lot of factors to last year's 14th fin and indeed the latter half of the season before last - key players off form (Pacman and Bowen 1st half of the season), poor recruitment & utilisation of such, Rice's box-2-box role changed the shape of the game & well I could be here all day listing problems, Moyes amongst them. We've recruited extremely well this transfer window & reverted to what Moyes does/knows best - There's more to come too...COYI⚒
If you want to know one way this system started to fail for us: Give us the ball. Outside of scoring from set-pieces and counterattacks, we struggled to break teams down that defended against us - by not over-extending, they limited our counter and good defensive shape + discipline. That was then however, now I believe we will be more adept at creating, should we encounter (which we will) defensive teams, due to Packman & Bowen's current form, coupled with the new recruits & their form & we seem to also have our old team unity that was so evident and crucial in the 6th/7th place seasons. We are stronger now than we have been in years.⚒
If you wanna find out how the best tactical minds, with the best players choose to beat this style of football.... Guess which game is coming up this weekend. West Ham v Man City. I am a West Ham fan, and whilst it has not been necessarily the prettiest, under David Moyes, we have been more successful as a counter-attacking defensive team, than the games where we are expected to be the more dominant (like our last game against Luton). There are definitely ways to beat this style, and many teams will do this year, especially if we don't have a decent plan B. It's also MUCH much easier to play this way when you are either tied or leading. Michail Antonio is a great target man for this style of play, but as an actual striker, he is far too inconsistently inaccurate to be considered dangerous. He will have his purple patches like any decent player, and he seems to be in one right now, but a genuinely consistent goalscoring threat he is not. But, that's not really his job, he is the outlet. It's gonna be a fun season, for sure.
A big difference this season is they have cut down on their coaches. Many have left & we seem to be better with less hands on deck. Too many cooks can spoil the broth & having coaches saying one thing & other coaches saying another can sometimes confuse players especially as a few players have very little skills regarding the English language. One man keeping it simple is proving best
I respect Moyes a lot especially the tactics he is using this season with west Ham even thought I really crapped on him when he ran Man United I feel like he didn’t know how to use the players etc but with that aside. One thing I’ve learned about good ol Moyse over the years he is old school loves his old school tactics it’s why players like Declan rice thrived okay west ham
We finished 6th a couple seasons ago then finished 7th and got a european semi final... PLAYING THIS STYLE... then last season we changed tactic etc and struggled and now we have gone BACK TO THE TACTIC THAT WAS SUCCESSFUL for us and doing well... i loved some of your comparisons but please, if you are talking about west ham then research it more too. i advise you to research Atletico Madrid and Diego Simeone too, you'll be amazed by what Simeone has done in football playing defensively
No problem, i hope it didn't come across as rude etc - i really appreciate you taking the time to read and respond to my comment>3 keep up the amazing work you're doing@@CoreyMcKinneyFC
And yeah! You need to have a team with good technics, only 1 or 2 touches before a pass and players who can take down their opponent to be able to move the ball forwards.
It's waaaaaayyy to early in the season to even hint at calling anything. Smaller teams generally don't have the staying power. With less players in your core team Football teams are a bit more vulnerable to injuries hurting their play style than Football (American) teams. See what happens after 1 or 2 injuries. Smaller teams often don't have the deep bench to hold on to their playstyle, or the quality medical staff to get injured or fatigued players back into the game. Like you said Corey, teams will adapt. And the bigger teams with more experienced managers can adapt to an upstart team way easier and have the budget to fix obvious holes in their lineup during the winter transfer window.
Rice is a superb player, but there are questions about whether he did in some ways hold west ham back, and how good he can be for arsenal. The winning goal vs man u says more about man u that prove rice is great (but he is great or close).
You didn't see it coming?? Please say more. I would like to hear more. who know, know. It's been a long time coming, along with making the right moves. COYI! ⚒
They've had a good start but it's early days, just 4 matches in there's a long way to go, have a look at what happened to Aston Villa yesterday too, they held a high defensive line but Liverpool just killed them with their long over the top passes from Trent and Matip leaving them massively exposed, whereas Liverpool took an interesting new defensive approach with Trent dropping into a CB role at times, the Liverpool defence has been knocked a lot of late but yesterday they looked solid and in control.
West Ham's defensive line tends to be fairly low or mid, meaning that a ball over the top is almost impossible to get right and the keeper can just collect any attempts. Villa leave more space to play a long ball into.
Great show so far but one query I do have is you said when we play a better form of quality, we beat Chelsea 3-1 before beating brighton 3-1 we have had harder opposition then arsenal 😂😂
Hey guys loved the video, the one thing I will say is you are wrong about the tactic breaking down, the 2 season before last season when we finished 6th and 7th respectively we played this same tactic. We excel in this type of play and we love terrorising teams with Antonio hold up.
Prowse is a baller at west ham and was amazing at Southampton also to note for you west ham is a club where future big club players usually come from Grealish, coutinho, Rice all came from west ham at one point in time
Grealish came from Aston Villa, and Coutinho went to Villa after Liverpool/Barcelona. Same shirt colours, different teams. Although your point is still valid. Biggest name players that came through our youth teams in recent/semi-recent years are Declan Rice, Rio Ferdinand, Frank Lampard, Joe Cole, Michael Carrick, Jermain Defoe, John Terry. Biggest name players who came in, made a name, and moved on to "bigger" clubs are Carlos Tevez, Javier Mascherano, Dmitri Payet. So, yeah, your point is correct, your players weren't. And, I also agree, Ward-Prowse was a great pick-up for us. We have always (under Moyes) been dangerous from set pieces, and he makes that even more so, on top of being a genuinely quality player in free play.
Kudos is an amazing signing for them, I don't know why teams like arsenal and united when for players like haverts and mount when kudos was available. The definitely won't make top 4 tho.
React to Ramos & Pepe the Craziest Duo Ever by Rom7ooo, because there you can see more when 2 centerbacks works together. I am a Barcelona fan, but I have to admit that I loved that defending duo in Real Madrid.
Football 101: possession means nothing if you're not doing anything with it, inter Milan just won 4-0 with 39% possession Shots and shots on target are the most important stat
What do you guys make of turner's performance against chelsea?they beat chelsea at chelsea ,i thought he was superb, the united states got a top goalkeeper
And west ham were poor last season because we tried to change type, we have been a counter attacking team since moyes came bk in. Cast your mind bk to 20/21 season when we finished 6th above spurs and arsenal playing 'Park the bus football' its called counter attacking or low block boys
I like your paralels to NFL I had the same realizations but the other way when I started to play Madden and watch NFL. Football and American Football are quite comically close
And yeah the transition is not even possible between those two outside of the kickers (Pat McAfee played soccer and is pretty good still) I might be a good reciever for my hands but I am way too slow and small I would be dead in two hits :D but I would also make NFL players look lost on football pitch.
For teams to spend some much time without the ball is not sustainable because as the season goes on Westham will get tired, you do more running when you dont have the ball.
Not sure I agree. There is some merit in what you say, but shifting 10 yards side to side in a low block is physically easier than running around trying to press all over the pitch.
Since American football originated from real football & rugby, it shouldn't be that much of a surprise to you...34 matches left West Ham won't finish better than 5th. Since you so big on statistics just go check last 20 years placement. Your inexperience to this game comes across, but at least you're giving it a go & diving way more into tactics & understandings of football, rather than the normal American youtube ignit reacting to football videos...Best of luck guys...
So funny to hear Ted Lasso and his buddy breakdown the tactics of football 🤣
YO 😂😂😂
How no other team went in for James Ward Prowse is crazy.
Serious baller
And kudus too 😂
I thought more would have tried to get him tbh.
To the likes of some clubs JWP & Kudus are too cheap in the market to look at. They feel the need to be looking at players that have a £100million price tag to justify how big their club is.
@@chinjindu1383its because jwp is 28 and other top clubs rather work more long term
They made the conference league to give teams from minor leagues a possibility to play in europe too
To come in with a team from england with all the budget and ability to sign players and then act like you've won a real trophy is pathetic
@@celsus7979lmao idiotic take. Way to tell me you don't know football without telling me you don't know football. 😂
Great start to our season!
i want to play nice football and get relegated thats the massive way
West ham made two amazing singings of my team Ajax: Alvarez and Kudus. They gonna show their ability in the prem now!
it suckes for my team though, we now lost our defensive midfielder in Alvarez and our most creative player and best dribbeler in Kudus.
Woah, you've got me interested now!!
i remember youtube suggestions about ManU fans reacting to the Brentford loss, the team spirit wasn't thereand Maguire and DeGea had stinker performance
IRONS !!
Forgot to mention Paqueta. He’s a genius. Agree with you: City will be the test. We might just surprise you.
Benrahma and Bowen are also great at taking the ball up the field and holding up the ball until reinforcements arrive
Tim steiden, buying players that fit Moyes style, is important, our past scattergun approach had Moyes trying to fit square pegs into round holes,
Another thing about West Ham, that ppl may not pay attention, is the sinergy between Paquetá (probably the most talented player on the hammers), Bowen and Benrahma... this last two players are super fast, and they can break likes for Paquetá do his "magic", or, to find them with a imaginative pass... they also move from wing to center and switch positions to confuse the defense and allow midfielders like Ward Prowse to come in, for example...
Imagine how boring the premier league would be if every team was play out from the back, high press and try to control possession.
you mean Pulis stoke...
Thank you for the clarifier!
a mediocre high press is a lot easier to carve apart than a well coached low block, its not exciting but a well crafted and thought out defence is just as important and creative as a free-flowing fluid attack
I LOVE hearing the similarities between futbol and football. Great content, nice insights, a really fresh take on reaction vids. Love you guys.
Thank you so much for this!!!!
Pressing leaves a lot of open space at the back at times, that's why some teams prefer to sit back and pick their press.
JWP took this team to another level, fantastic signing
Yes! we know all their tatics too and all the other teams know how we play.
No wonder we struggled against Luton Town because we had more possession then we used to
About West Ham, the question is can they sustain that run of form.
As footballmeta showed, there are certain key players like Antonio, Alvarez, and Ward Prose whose skillset and physicality suits these tactical choices, and their ability to maintain their performance in executing it will be the reason of its success or defeat.
it has been said West Ham play a very Italian style of football
They play 1 bank of 5 and second bank of 4 at the back then hit the opposition on the break. It’s a frustrating watch but who cares when we win. Roll on 16/09/23 we play city . Alvarez pulls in the 1st line to support the back line. Leaving the other midfielders to protect the second line.
West Ham could not have they ball against Manchester City even if they wanted to. Bayern Munich are one of the most possession based teams in the world and they could hardly get the ball against Manchester City last season.
It's going to be a fun game to watch no doubt!
Love seeing you and Luke getting in to “real” football. Jokes aside. I’m actually a NFL supporter as well even though I am from Sweden. Looking forward to the new season really much.
The issue with route one is it will not age well. Teams will seat deep against them and frustrate them
That was my theory too! I think it will eventually break down for them
@@CoreyMcKinneyFC true. I think playing 2 to 3 styles is very important for Epl managers. Cause teams figure u out quickly especially if you don't have world class players that can win u games individually.
@@mphosethong5210 I think its more about having core principles to your team that can be morphed into different formation/defensive shapes
I'd love to see you two play Fifa together, could be a cool video/series
They missed off that West Ham had more shots on target against Brighton. Not unusual for The Irons to shoot 50-75% accuracy.
Also, in the last three years they have finished 6th, 7th, semi-final (Europa Cup), 14th, winners (European Conference Cup), currently (early on) 4th.
Everyone keeps focussing on that 14th, which occurred in the same season that they won a cup and a better year than Liverpool, Brighton, Chelsea and Tottenham.
14th is a blip, caused by them trying to play like everyone else.
What's going to be interesting is Tottenham vs West Ham. Tottenham are playing a very high press and keeping the ball in the opponents half.
This is real football, Route one playstyle. No matter how talented a team is, this style of play will always have a chance of winning
I'm loving it!
As a defender myself, I fully endorse this comment.
@@jonisilk as a creative attacker , this comment disgusts me hahahaha (but it is still true)
Route one with Lucas Paqueta ? I don't think so .......
I will never get used to my fellow americans talking about my beloved west ham and football COYI
Absolutely loving these videos. Keep 'em coming and you might get a NordVPN or Manscaped sponsorship haha
I’d take a Manscaped sponsorship all day!
With JWP and our ability to score from set pieces, means teams that want to sit back have to come forward when we score, which opens up more space for us to take advantage of
everyone seems to have forgotten that West Ham finish 6th then 7th in back to back season and Europa semi final then winning a European trophy
It's actually astonishing to see how short memories can be. People have started talking about WHU as if they're a newly promoted club.
Yoo guys. Little bit out of context. Did you watch the Arsenal vs Man Utd match? That's was mental, it always a treat to see our United fans friend got melt down. It is similar like seeing your cowboys fans friend witnessed last second hail merry TD against them or last seconds interception TD
You finally talked about my team ⚒❤
This was a nice watch
8:05 it exactly need to be organised, because if your only 3 counter-attacks are wasted because of bad pass or lack of understanding each other ideas, it's not gonna work
15:00 it's definitely a good idea since generally, with tactics like this, their block is in the defensive zone, but here their def block is way up so a fast player could be devastating, but the counter to that is how well they play the offside trap, if they do, you also might not have many opportunities
their tactic is really targeting way bigger teams so they have to think about something better against smaller teams, but they got the depth now so it will be interesting to see what they come up with
in terms of tactic football is relatively close to american football, in terms skills it's closer to basketball, that's what i discovered watching american react to this sport
It's a frustrating tactic to play against as WestHam experienced with Luton the other day
You forgot to add we (west ham) won the europa conference league trophy last season though finishing 14th in the premier league
nope, two different tactics and mentalities but they are similar in a lot of ways so i get why you may be confused
Nah, catenaccio is a man marking system with a libero/sweeper.
West Ham is going to be a dangerous team this season with the defensive tactics #irons
This is how Moyse won the Europa conference league last season in a nutshell
Thrived in west ham I meant
We finished 6th a couple seasons ago then finished 7th and got a european semi final... PLAYING THIS STYLE... then last season we changed tactic etc and struggled and now we have gone BACK TO THE TACTIC THAT WAS SUCCESSFUL for us and doing well... i loved some of your comparisons but please, if you are talking about west ham then research it more too. i advise you to research Atletico Madrid and Diego Simeone too, you'll be amazed by what Simeone has done in football playing defensively
hahaha they're clueless

@@NicholasThorntonOfficial nah man, I hear your passion for your team and I respect it! Thank you!
You're right, it certainly is too early to make a call on long term success, but what they've done this season already is so impressive.
Smaller teams who in the past three seasons have finished 6th, 7th and won a European trophy? What planet are you on?

Westham play well because they get rid of rice. Rice cant always win u matches and will hinder progress.
Rice is a superb player, but there are questions about whether he did in some ways hold west ham back, and how good he can be for arsenal. The winning goal vs man u says more about man u that prove rice is great (but he is great or close).

Love you learning about football!
It has been such a blessing!
Let's talk again after we play Man City and Liverpool over the next 2 matches...............
Defensive part of the football and soccer looks very similar.
We finished 6th and 7th playing this way , last season moyes tried something different and it didn't work,
Great show so far but one query I do have is you said when we play a better form of quality, we beat Chelsea 3-1 before beating brighton 3-1 we have had harder opposition then arsenal 😂😂
You guys should react to that Europa conference League final
You guys might be off or misunderstand things sometimes, but I still enjoy watching these discussions. Keep it up guys

Thoughts on Newcastles performance against Brighton Corey?
It was a rough game to round out a really rough start to the season. I’m hoping we get it together soon
Leicester City won the League playing defensive bro
I like your paralels to NFL I had the same realizations but the other way when I started to play Madden and watch NFL. Football and American Football are quite comically close
And yeah the transition is not even possible between those two outside of the kickers (Pat McAfee played soccer and is pretty good still) I might be a good reciever for my hands but I am way too slow and small I would be dead in two hits :D but I would also make NFL players look lost on football pitch.
West ham have been playing like this for 3 seasons now so its not new
For teams to spend some much time without the ball is not sustainable because as the season goes on Westham will get tired, you do more running when you dont have the ball.
Not sure I agree. There is some merit in what you say, but shifting 10 yards side to side in a low block is physically easier than running around trying to press all over the pitch.
To be fair west ham only has to play Manchester city twice.
I think they are going to get worked by man city, west ham just wants a top 4 position
'Just' want a top 4 position? That would be a massive achievement!!
IRON WALL
Field tilt is dumb
We will know it after December…big teams are set to be physically ready at February so…nice beginning are good but. It nnever last
West Ham finished 6th and 7th playing this style of football before having a poor season trying to play another way. What are you talking about?
@williambuckley5601 in both those seasons West Ham had a lull in form in the new year, so fisheye has a point
