      Man… I feel like everything I was told in HS was wrong.
      We used what we called the modified South African Drill and that was where the left foot was in the back of the circle, knees bent, facing the left foul marker, then we would sprint to the middle & pivot, transferring our weight to the left foot as soon as it touched after the turn, then the torque opened our hip as we finished the throw.
      We were told it was a sprint: not a hop, not a spin & that it only looked like a spin if the movement was fluid enough.
      I really miss throwing, but unfortunately, it seems to be the one sport that is impossible to do recreationally. You’re either a pro or nothing. Golfers keep golfing. Baseball players play softball. Runners run. I have no fun.

    Incredible explanation Dane. I actually threw farther from South African than the full spin, now I know why. No reason to do them, very clear.

    You know back in the 80s they had an exercise that was called the running south African..it was a bit weird but it was used by guys who throw the discus 60+ meters...

    Excuse me, Coach Dan, I really like your videos and I would like to plan a technical training plan for myself but I have no ideas. Do you think you could guide me a little to plan it?

    Discus is linear then rotational so it does work for that. Makes for a very ineffective sweep, though. Depends on your emphasis...

    • @ThrowsUniversity
      @ThrowsUniversity  3 года назад +1

      Our emphasis is gathering rotational energy, so we find the South African to be rather ineffective for hour technical priorities.

    First off, I want to say that I enjoy your channel, I am a subscriber and I usually agree with everything you have to say.
    But please hear me out, personally I think the mentally of this approach in the video is wrong.
    (there's my shocking statement to get you to read the rest of this post, ha ha)
    I don't coach the SA as a way to throw in itself, but truly as a 'portion' of the full throw. You can then still coach it the same as the full. Also, DO NOT use the same wind you would for the full, but wind to the same position you would want to be in when you have rotated 90 deg to that position. Sure it's more difficult for the thrower to think of it this way due to the more static start. The SA should only be used to learn/fix drive issues out of the back of the circle and focal point issues. If the athlete doesn't have those issues, then don't use the SA.
    All of the issues in the video can be taught with the SA. It is just harder to do them in an SA. Basically, don't teach the SA as a SA in itself, but as just a part of the full throw and you are fine. One example is that it's harder to get momentum with the right leg from a SA. Good! That teaches the athlete how to use the right leg better out of the back. It's just like doing standing throws and squatting down lower teaches the athlete how to have a longer drive into the throw at the front. Just cause some drill makes it harder for an athlete to do something doesn't mean it's a bad thing.
    If the athlete has no issue with drive out of the back off the left leg or getting the legs out from under them at the front, then the SA isn't that useful anymore. In re-reading/editing this post I see that we really agree on the final point, but it's just that our reasons are different. The SA is a very very useful drill in dealing with drive issues and focal points out of the back of the ring.
    (also, I really enjoyed that you placed Adam Nelson so high on your all time Shot Putter list!)

      Personally I think SA is good depending on what is being worked on with the athlete. If they have problems sweeping then clearly it’s not for them until they fix it however I think SA is benefits that finding that upper body and lower body separation
