I have had a brass Sport for over three years and absolutely love everything about it. Incidentally, mine came with the sardine can. The bronze is certainly nice but, in my opinion, not nice enough to justify the extra cost. I am happy to be firmly on team brass.

  • @LaddGardner4

Typical thoughtful and well reasoned review of these two great pens. I understand most of Kaweco's loyal following deferring to the latest offering, and the allure of the luminescent gold and it's attractiveness. I paid $50 for the brass not long after its introduction in the mid-teens, and then I spent another $150 on the 14k O60 gold nib. I found the contrast between the brass and the white metal nib jarring, and it was a constant aesthetic affront as the pen began to patina from my almost nonstop pants-pocket carry on summertime hikes, etc. Over the past seven years the brass has turned a muted chocolate brown, and it looks amazing with the gold nib, which mirrors the brighter clip. Brass kills viruses and bacteria, and that was great during Covid. Bronze is much more oxidation resistant, so will look pristine for years, but brass becomes a mute journal and testament to your passage through life. If it's not obvious, I vote brass, and spend the difference on a gold nib! :)

Brass is a fantastic material to machine, cuts really well and exactly, which is why it was used so much by Victorian mechanisms and instruments. So it has a certain nostalgic look and identity.

Copper + zinc vs. copper + tin. n There are a number of interesting newish alloys. My current favorite (silver colored) is chrome -cobalt, consisting of (you guessed it) chromium and cobalt. The "metal smell" is actually the metal (as a catalyst) chemically changing hand oils. You are actually smelling yourself, not the metal!

I wonder why so large a difference in price. Brass currently costs about $1.82 and bronze $2.35 - _per pound_. That's a difference in pennies per pen. Brass is more malleable than bronze and easier to work with, but it's not that much easier to machine. Well, whatever the reason, I prefer brass with a polished finish, bronze with a matte finish. I have a heavy (105 gram) brass pen, hand engraved, quite nice. Brass is slightly softer, making detailed hand engraving easier, so engravers will prefer brass. From your images, I prefer the Kaweco bronze.

If I had extra disposable income lying about, I would get the new Bronze Sport, even though I already have the Brass Sport and Steel Sport. Hell, if I just had money to blow, I'd get the Brass Sport set in fountain pen, ballpoint, and pencil, AND the Bronze Sport set in all three. As well as a spare Steel Sport. Just to have them in my collection, even if I wasn't using them all daily but just in my rotation of favorite pens.

How about a comparison with the Kaweco Steel Sport?

If only I had one. Great idea though.

Both the Brass AND the Bronze come in the Kaweco tin.

Not always. Sometimes the Brass comes in a cardboard tube. But the Bronze does (supposedly) always. Of course, one says that and there will be several variations out there.

Does this pen dry out if used occasionally? Like twice a year?

What? No crocodile shirt? I am so distracted by this sartorial deviation that I am having a hard time paying attention the the video!

I need to rewatch it. I forget what I was wearing! By request, I have been adding wardrobe notes in the descriptions. The Polos go away soon until it gets warm again!

I heard the bronze was heavier.

Their reported weights are all over the place, but having them in hand, I cannot notice a difference. I do wish I had a sensitive scale. Thanks.

If they were identical, the threads on the bronze would not be more pronounced.

    • @HemingwayJones

They feel more pronounced and the cap still works. Their obviously not identical or they would be made of the same material, but they are of the same specs.
