In a world of iconic menswear, men's ties are certainly up there with the Burberry trench coat which by the way, you want to know if a Burberry trench coat is worth it or not , please check out this video here. Generally, you know you're doing something right even an entire industry is here to fake your products and that's the case with Hermès ties. Finding a used one is almost like a gamble if you don't know what to look for and stay tuned for another video where we discuss how you can identify a fake Hermes tie from a genuine one. For this video, we'll assume you buy one directly from Hermes so you know what you get is the real deal. In the US, Hermes ties have a price tag of a $180. In Europe, it's a little less. In Australia, it's a little more but overall, it's right around that price point.
So are Hermès ties worth it? Of course, the answer is it depends!
If you're someone who really likes printed whimsical motifs, these little animal prints then Hermès is definitely the way to go. Also, if you're looking for more unusual colors such as fuchsia ties or chartreuse green maybe some orange tones, Hermès will likely have a shade that you can get. Also, if you're a Wall Street banker or if you work in finance and you want to fit in with your company culture, an Hermès tie is certainly the way to do that. That being said, personally, I'm not a big fan of whimsical motifs on ties and I prefer different textures so Hermès ties are not the ideal tie for me. I have a bunch of them including vintage ones and new ones but frankly, I don't wear them a whole lot anymore. The ones I wear the most are probably the woven ties, they are somewhat simple and don't look like a typical Hermès tie. With many other luxury products, you pay a lot for the name but you get average to mediocre quality.
On the other hand with an Hermès tie, you certainly pay for the name but you also get a quality product. On top of that, genuine Hermès ties usually yield quite high prices even when they're used. Of course, they have to be in pristine condition which ties rarely are if you actually wear them and on top of that, you have to prove that it's actually a genuine product which can be very hard unless you have the specific receipt with a photo of the tie. Of course, if you give all the Hermès ties you don't want any longer to a store, they have to mark them up and ultimately, you don't get much for used Hermes ties anyways. Also if you're shorter than 6 foot or 183 centimeters, Hermes ties may be too long for you and all you can do is tie a really big knot which may often not work with your head size. Also if you're really a tall man and you want more variety in your ties, Hermès is not the right place for you.
I also think they're not worth buying used unless you know very well what you're doing, otherwise you may pay top dollar for what turns out to be a fake.
Personally, I also like ties to have different widths, my favorite width is about nine centimeters or three and a half inches, and it's not a niche served by Hermes at all.
Building up an entire Hermes tie collection can be rather expensive. If you buy 12 ties you're already down more than $2,000. Now they certainly use high quality materials including their silk but when I was looking for silks for our Fort Belvedere ties, I met Weavers who would actually produce jacquard woven silks for Hermes and we get ourselves from the same vendor at the same quality standards yet Fort Belvedere ties cost a lot less especially if you buy more and get the volume discount. Hermes on the other hand doesn't offer any volume discount.

I'm with you, Sven. I understand the high quality of Hermes, but for me, I find most of their prints in poor taste. They sure aren't worth $180 to me. I'd rather have one from Fort Belvedere over Hermes any day. I like that you compared a high end brand like Hermes to your own Fort Belvedere. Fort Belvedere is every bit as good, if not better, than any "luxury" brand.
Of course, with those big brands you always pay a lot for the name, marketing, PR etc.
@@gentlemansgazette That's why I bought a handmade german tie made of italian silk for 100€ - Auerbach. The structures are stitched, not printed.
@kshiftkometh That's not true, Hermes carries a wide range of ties from understated to very bold.
I don't know what difference does it make between 8CM wide and 9CM wide Tie. Please explain to me.
Poor silly Americans...
I like how you give us historical lessons about brands you are talking about.
That shows dedication and it's what I expect from this channel.
here i am back watching Gentleman's Gazette on Hermes Ties. i am a 77 year old retired woman and have absolutely no practical need
for any of your wonderful information. however, i am hooked on you channel. super entertaining and hilarious. thank you
I agree! I really wish that I could see men dressed like this.
work from home in my lounge pants and tee shirts but i really enjoy the channel, too.
@@gregarioussolitudinist5695 But wouldn't you work more productively if you dressed up in a suit and tie at home?!
me too. only I am 47 now. but I too have no need, and I knew I wouldn't get one for my husband before I watched the video. I just know why a little better now - I guess
Same here, but I find the videos informative and soothing. I like it that Raphael and Preston promote natural fibers, high quality and handmade items.
I bought my first Hermes tie a month ago. The first time I wore it I was complimented and this was from a senior partner at another firm. They actually apologised for not making as much effort as me! They simply said “That is a beautiful tie that looks like it arrived in an orange box. I should have made more of an effort.” I congratulated them on their eye for detail and thanked them for the compliment. I must say it really made my day and I’ve already ordered another one. They really are in a different league compared to ties I’ve previously worn. I have fallen in love with them.
By the way I love your content it’s really interesting and delightful to listen to. Thank you.
One day I hope to develop the sartorial eye to identify a tie brand on site.
The passion Sven has for the topic can be felt thru his delivery.
I've been collecting Hermés ties for a couple of years, have about 8. They are quirky and special and only used for special occasions. Great video!
I buy one every year at the Hermès store. Totally aggree with you, they're limited, which is why I wouldn't build a collection out of them... but for what they do best, no one does it better. If you take, say, a Brooks Brothers tie with a similar style print, it's not even vaguely comparable. The quality and attention to detail are amazing. Also, I'm originally from Brazil and I didn't know they had silk farms there! Cool video.
How do you manage to look so Elegant and Sharp? It does not matter what you wear it looks amazing and classy!
1:05 180 dollars - ''In europe it's a little less, 175 euro's''
It costs 157 euro's if you convert the dollars into euro's which means that it's actually a 12.7% more expensive in Europe
You are not comparing apples to apples. In the US, you have to add sales tax, in Europe the price tag includes it.. So if you are in Chicago, LA or New York the final.price is different. If you want to compare actual prices, remove the sales tax in Europe. In Germany, it is 19% in Italy even more... And then you see that the actual price is a little lower. Including sales tax it depends since different places have different rates and you have to compare it on an individual basis.
So the comparison isn't equal, since one has taxes included in its price and the other one doesn't.
@Teringventje Je doet je naam zowaar eer aan, teringventje.... ;)
@42treg that is not only rude, it is not true for all of europe. you know very well, that there are brands with different prices in different countries within europe. ALSO - one has to consider the exchange rate and which VAT in the USA is considered. There are states with very little VAT and others a little higher. it is a generalization and not an error to commit
@42treg I just calculated it. it is about the same or less depending on the exchange rate. how should it cost less? you know that the VAT is added when you check out resp. if you order from abroad, you don't pay the local VAT but the import sales tax of your country. in the country I live in, that is 20% in Germany 19%. So it can only be a very minor price difference in favor of the US in case the local VAT you count is less then 19% PLUS as stated before - the difference in exchange rate. yes, I can calculate and yes I looked the prices up. so what else should I do? invent a story, so you come up as the truthteller?
I saw someone make a request on a previous video for you to review Hermes ties. I think it's wonderful that you followed through with it. 👍
Sad to say the days of ties and other neckware are officially over in Europe (except UK). In banks offices and other business locations even newscasters Showmaster and invited guests at talk shows all wear no neckware just open shirts. In banks they even wear specific white shirts with black buttons giving a hint where a tie used to be. Some even mentioned they are happy to be relieved of the oppressing choking factor of a tie. I certainly don't follow that trend. I remain outsider and stand out with bow tie neck tie and cravat.
I see this happening a lot, myself! Unfortunately, the restrictiveness/choking aspect has nothing to do with a properly tied tie… it’s a function of overly tight shirt collars, imho. But the perception, as you correctly stated pushed the blame off on the tie.
On the other hand, fashion is cyclical and ties WILL cause me back into popularity at SOME point. If bell bottoms and parachute pants can come back (as they have, you can BET that neck ties will as well. When they do… classic/antique versions of the famous masters, like Hermès, will be the most rare and most valuable! Jmho
Guess you haven't been in Milan ahah
Whaat? Are you reading my mind? I was thinking about getting a Hermès tie for my husband as a Christmas present (he’s also German by the way), and your video is right on time wow! :) Thank you very much for this video, it was very helpful 🙏🏻
I appreciate all of your content and diversity, thank you for teaching me to be a well-educated gentleman.
I think you shoud meke a video about what the etiquette says when you have to deal with a situation when someone really make you angry. It would be very intresting and helpful.
Stay tuned! :)

@@gentlemansgazette For sure! Thanks
Great to see the series back!
I love Hermès ties! The one you’re wearing here is gorgeous too. They have really many gorgeous ties.
That pin stripe suit and tie is really sharp! I've never really thought about bigger lapels but they really say something about a man's character and style in addition to the tie knot. First time on this channel. RMRS has gotten to cliche and all the secrets are out. I'm liking your content and new info Sven. Thanks.
Excellent, thorough video Sven. I am drawn to the 7cm geometric print versions.😍 Best option for my 5’9.5”, slim frame.
If you had to pick out your first tie from hermes, I'd go with either orange, red or yellow. These colors will grab the most attention, and the shades for these colors are perfect. Go with the printed ones in a complimentary color.
I really like the Hermes ties but I would probably not shell out that amount for a tie. I agree with Sven on the importance of fabric and texture.
This may be too old a thread but I have a good collection (11 in excellent shape) of Hermes ties that I inherited from my father but he collected them during the 1960’s and 1970’s. I love them but they’re not all patterned/colored in ways that appeal to my aesthetic. I know they are all 100% genuine - just like the 80+ women’s Hermes scarves from my mother. Of course we don’t have receipts but my dad and Grandfather were well known investment bankers in New Your for decades and we regularly visited Hermès in NYC and Paris for Christmas and birthdays. It was a family tradition as far back as I remember. Now, I’ve come full circle and I’m interested in Hermés myself. While it’s not a matter of price barrier for myself… I’d love to sell some of these ties and scarves to someone that will TRULY appreciate them; and then use the proceeds to purchase some newer Hermés ties that better fit my aesthetic. ANY advice on how to sell/trade them without getting taken to the cleaners? Is there a service that can authenticate ties (and maybe scarves) so that I can sell them to others without them worrying they are reproductions?
Sigh I get the tension between "thought leader" content creation and pitching your own product or service. Trying to answer "Is A $180 Hermès Tie Too Expensive?" is not the way to navigate that tension! This came off by the end as a Fort Belvedere infomercial, and if you want me to spend ~Eton prices on Fort Belvedere accessories, going negative and telling me that Hermès is not worth it will not get you there. I was pretty attracted by the Fort Belvedere demos on your videos and the photos on your website, and honestly this video put me off.
A lot of the criticisms here felt goofy: sure they come in one width, but you'd probably have one Hermès tie among many ties in a wardrobe. Nobody is telling you you have to go mono-brand in your collection. That's a straw man. I'm not sure what your concern is around length. I'm 5'6" and haven't had issues with them being overly long, even with a pretty slim four-in-hand knot. Plus, it's not exotic (if you own a tie for wearing, not as a speculative vehicle) to ask a tailor shorten a tie.
For what it's worth, I find Hermès silk really awesome - especially the women's scarves, but the ties and pocket squares too. I have a few pieces (two pocket squares and a tie) and have gifted female loved ones their scarves a couple times. The artistic sense in the designs, and particularly the willingness to lean into "cute" and "fun" within the extraordinarily repressed space of men's clothing, are a gift. In external signals, there was one time I was coming home from a wedding on public transit and people were literally shouting out, late at night - across the train car, across the street - that I looked amazing. I've worn that same suit a lot; it fits me great. The Hermès tie and pocket square are what I'd changed!
I'm adding Fort Belvedere ties to my christmas list for gifts for the guys in my life. FYI, this is ALWAYS so difficult for me to find something the guys will like each year for Christmas, so, I'd love to hear your "wish list" that you wish your wife would get for you each year! Big help. Thanks so much
Wow. They look awesome I never knew. I will try going in one of the stores in Japan... scary
Finally a well out together Video!
Hermés should be worth it.
I have a few that my wife bought - I find it interesting that certain colleagues, some are guys, but mostly females, are very aware of the accessories a guy wears.
Thank you for another great video! Bought myself a Hermès tie after watching this :D
I'm not really sure how accurate this video is. I have 6-7 Hermes ties. All of them are in classic muted colours, two of them are striped ties, and 2 of them are knit ties with nice textures to them. I'm around 5'7 tall and the length works fine for me with a slightly modified knot, which does not result in the knot being too big for my face. I've had a totally different experience with Hermes ties. I think this video much more accurately described Ferragamo ties than Hermes ties.
Beautiful Ralph Lauren suit, impeccably coordinated.
Thanks
Hello fellow gentleman make sure to keep up the fantastic work you are doing greetings from Britain
I love Hermes ties and have an extensive collection, which are all real. They are the only tie and all ll I wear. They standout and are beautiful.
The tie you are wearing in the video is a very nice color and works well with your suit jacket.
I did manage to find an authentic Hermes tie second hand for $2. It was one of my luckiest finds. It is the only one I have ever found since $180 per tie is just a tad much for my budget
Stay tuned on our guide on how to authenticate an Hermès tie, it is the most fake tie out there...
Hello Gentlemen! Sven, I value what you do here and appreciate the effort you put into these videos. You and Preston have wonderful fashion sense and make a great team- I bet you also have a lot of fun making these videos!
So is it worth it? Great question. In my humble and personal opinion: No, and only under the pretense that the patterns don't at all appeal for the price AND that I'd be hard pressed to invest that sort of money on a tie of any type in lieu of something like another fine fur felt fedora.
This was a amazing video. Thank you💜🖤💜🖤
Excellent video, Sven! I agree with Gentleman Farmer in that I would much rather purchase a Fort Belvedere tie (bow tie in my case) over an over-priced and honestly, unappealing Hermes tie....though no offense to gentlemen that enjoy Hermes ties, of course.
Hermes neckties are absolutely worth the money. I first started wearing ties daily in the late 90's when Hermes ties were $95. At the time I thought they were expensive but I am a "whimsical" person and Hermes allowed me to have a bit of fun while working in a conservative environment.
Absolutely - menswear is painfully repressed on average, and I cherish Hermès silk products for their childlike sense of joy and fun 😊
Quality is incredible, the knot is superb but I only like the jacquard woven silk .
I buy them second hand fort around 50 bucks in top condition
I have the orange Hermes tie featured here and I quite love it. Dutch people always comment on it!
I had to check the date. Where can I get a Hermes tie for $180? I should have stocked up.
I really enjoyed this, and loved how impartial and researched it was-- especially considering you could have easily talked up Fort Belvedere the entire time! Well done.
Nice! I’ve been waiting for this video
Great review, it really added to my understanding. Thanks :)
Much of the pricing of super high end stuff is just brand tax, but some of it is chemistry. The thing you get from Hermes, and the Hermes price is vibrant colors that last a long time, which isn't easy or cheap to develop. You can see what I'm talking about when you compare vintage dyed and printed goods to modern ones. Most vintage stuff is slightly muted, largely due to oxidation. How much that is worth to you is your choice. Some cheaper fabrics will look just fine for a while.
I use Ferragamo. Similar prints. Peiple in the office loves them. Compliments all the time.
We were just in Palm Beach Florida at the Hermes Paris store. Quite a good experience
I would buy an Hermes tie for the right occasion & that pinstriped suit is too cool 😎
Salvatore Ferragamo Ties Are Iconic and worth it Brioni makes high quality ties too
thanks for posting ... really enjoy your videos
I really the way you speak, I almost understand every word you said
Perhaps a video on Tom Ford ties?
Is a Barbour waxed jacket worth it?
I'd like to see that too!
I would say so, they get better looking with age
For me, yes! My Barbour field jacket is the most used casual jacket in my wardrobe and I find it can really be dressed up or down depending on what you wear under it
I curious about the maintenance too.
I have two. A waxed one and non waxed one. I wear the non waxed one more, because the waxed one just st attracts everything like a magnet. Pet hair, dust, lint, etc. Just a lot more maintenance
Pay well for quality is always wise, but sometimes the price is so high and a supposed high quality so full of doubts that the entire idea must be placed in question. I mean for example, why pay $180-plus for a plain blue tie? Material can be prized and all, but it's just blue... and it's just a tie too. A middle ground of price and quality or slightly over seems better.
Sir, pls do an unbiased review of Tom Ford Tuxedo and tell us if it's worth it or not.
How did I find myself here, I don’t wear ties, why did I click, why do I like it so much...
I'm 13 and I am inspired to look fancy.
Captain Pea I’m 15 and I’ve been looking after myself for years. Best thing you’ll ever do, and it never wears off.
The founder was not German; Thierry Hermès was born in 1801 in the city of Krefeld, which at the time was part of Napoleon's empire, earning Hermès French citizenship. Both his parents were from France.
Yeah sure, treat yourself if you can afford it.
How about doing a video on designer belts? Like Hermès, Ferragamo, etc...?
Will do
@@gentlemansgazette A detailed video on Hermès belt kits would be great! The different buckles, belt leather and widths and discussion on the perennial colours and seasonal new colours (although no more 42mm sadly).
@Gentleman's Gazette I’m holding you to your word on the designer belt video. I would also like to see some quality checks, for authentication, like you presented in this video. The belt market is almost as replica flooded as the bag/purse market
Seth Riser look up the channel a closer look
I have an hermès belt. The quality is amazing and the Craftsmanship is very nice! From what I have read the leather is the exact same as the Birkin bags and come from calf leather. And I did here from someone that the buckles are held to the same metal standard as a high end Swiss watch (to me I think of Patek Philippe watches)
This whole vidio is basicly just Sven flexing on Hermés. XD
Why would I need samples? I have the ties
How often do you restock your tie sizes? Most of the short ties are out of stock and that's awfully frustrating, standing at 5'3!
Very nicely done here my friend kudos to you 👏🏽👏🏽 I have the belts 4 of them i'm gonna get a tie or 2 in the near future 👌🏾
Thanks for that video 👍
You can buy beautiful ties for 70-80, with fun prints and great material-vineyard vines or any of the southern designers-but none last as well as Hermès or Ferragamo. They just don’t keep their shape as well. One designer to consider with great material and prints is Pineda Covalin. Not Hermès but very original.
I would not dress as sven but i find his advice extremely valuable
I invested in a seven fold tie recently...it’s nice but I’m not sure I can honestly say there is much difference.
for me, everything depends on your ability to spend, or the money that you got, if you earn $7,000 a month, buying a Hermes tie every months isn't that of a big deal, but if you only earn like 2,000 - 3,000 a month, it's kinda big deal.
Any hermès product is definitely worth it. 👌
Personally, owning a few of their ties I really feel they are worth the price. Another brand I think make great ties is Drake’s however they are a similar price, but I think it is also worth it!
Dear Gentlemen’s Gazette,
Is 62 inches too farfatched to be a genuine Hermès? I’ve followed your guidelines and it’s passed many of the tests. There is not box and the seller was courteous enough to spend me plenty of photos including ones I asked for to spot whether it had the dove fold.
I would like to know who still makes the classic WIDE TIES. NO I'm not speaking about the 1980's ties. I'm talking the traditional really wide tie like Laurel and Hardy, Cary Grant, Humphrey Bogart, Clark Gable, and Fred Astaire all wore and they weren't ascots or cravats. They still make them somewhere in the UK but I've yet to find out who and Google has been no help in finding new ones. I can't stand these skinny ties and skinny lapels. At least my tailor can still get me wide lapels but not real ties. Any help would be appreciated.
I have not purchased one yet, but I will say that FB ties look much more promising in quality and tasteful classic design than anything i have seen on the internet, in cluding Hermes.
Hey Sven! Awesome content!
Can you please make a similar video on Ermenegildo Zegna or Tom Ford ties?
I have one it’s more on the conservative side, the fun motifs are not for me personally. I love yours by the way Sven
I have a couple, wear them once in a while. I mostly wear other ties though.
I wear Robert Talbott sevenfold ties, and 180 is about what I would expect to pay on eBay. So if you like the tie, 180 is not a bad price.
Can you make a worth it video for kiton?
Yes! He do trio with Brioni and Isaia.
Did you really have to use Charvet as a visual representation of „secondhand stores“?
Could you please tell me where I can get my collection of hermes ties repaired and conditioned? Thanks.
If you can't tell if it's real Hermes or not juts by looking at the front of the tie, then it's not worth it. It's a purely decorative item so how it looks is all that matters.
If you are on a budget, I think the tie should be the last item to spend money on.
1) good suit
2) good shoes
3) good dress shirt
4) -and only then- a good necktie
There are polyester neckties out there, costing no more then 20 bucks, that are really good enough. Today for instance I am wearing a cheapo 100% polyester Pier One Zalando tie. It's nothing like a Hermes tie, but it looks quite good, it knots quite good and it stays in place quite good.
If you wear a tie more then once a year also, I do believe In ties it's better to have 3 to 5 'acceptable' ties, then just having one single 'great' tie.
shoes come first.
trust the expert
Agree totally!
how often do you wear ties? I have 8 good ties including Hermes, Dior, Armani,
Have you done a video on Patek or Rolex or Barbour or Ferragamo or Tods or Persol? Thanks!
Hi. Is there a collar gap between your jacket and shirt?
What about vineyard vines?
The link to the ‘spot fakes’ page didn’t seem to work: ‘page not found’.
What brands other than Hermes (and Ferragamo?) offer similar patterns in good quality? I really like the horse-polo-squid-etc theme and their colors but haven’t found many others that offer it. Always looking to save a buck!
For reference, an Hermès tie is AUD $310 here in Australia
Wonder if you could do a is it worth it? on Tom Ford sunglasses.
What is the reason to buy a genuin tie if I can get an identical for $10?
When I was wearing ties to work everyday, I paid between $8 to $40 for my ties.
I got some great ties in that price range, and I got a lot of complements on them.
I’d have to have money to toss into a fireplace to pay $180 for a tie.
Not a fan of the “whimsical” patterns, but I like most others
I really like the belts of this company 😍
You mentioned your own store way too much. This does not come off as an honest review, it comes off as a sneaky advert.
I like your channel in general, please stop doing this otherwise tons off people won't take you seriously.
I would suggest getting them vintage. You can get them for as low as 40€, and age should not matter since they are of such high quality.
I would suggest Vestiare, who have specialists who confirm the authenticity of the product before you buy it.
This is totally subjective. I have a friend that would never spend more than £10 on a tie, and only buys them because he has to wear them for work. He doesn't care about the quality or even notice any of the details. However I love Hermes ties for both their quality and designs. Some people disagree, but that's the great thing about opinions - nobody is right or wrong. :-D I don't judge my friend for what he likes and he doesn't judge me for wearing ties even on my days off. Haha. If you enjoy it, buy it and love it. If it's not for you, find something that you ARE passionate about and indulge in that instead. ;-)
One thing I will say, I do think Hermes ties have fallen in quality. While the feel and finish remain the same, they now almost exclusively make narrow/skinny ties, maybe as a cost savings move masquerading as trendy. I personally feel that 8cm or 3.15in is the skinniest a tie should be in a professional setting. It just looks off otherwise.
How do you tie that long skinny knot? I like the look of it and have been experimenting with different knots to achieve it, but for some reason i always get a very knot that's really wide at the top. If anyone could help, that would be great (I'm only 20 so I don't have a lot of experience with ties)
why isnt in Hermés stores your selection? there is Jockey printed but not in yellow, there is Tangram but not in green? they are old or something?
@L L thanks for the heads up, I thought this myself too, but I only look online, (us site, french, uk, even the finnish) because they didnt have a store in my country... eh bien need to go to Paris some time
I just don’t like them. If you made a video Brunello Cucinelli, that would be great. I have seen some of their cardigans on ‘Mr Porter’ for over £2000. Yet I see similar from Johnstons of Elgin for around £600. Is BC really so many times better? If so, why so? I would like somebody to explain this to me. Thank you.
How much should a tie cost?
$3-10.
what was the price of this suit
