Carl Friedrich Abel capitalised on a musical pedigree with strong links to the Bach family. Abel’s father, Christian Friedrich, had been the chamber cello and viol player in Cöthen where J.S. Bach was appointed Capellmeister, and the two developed a close professional and personal relationship. When Abel Sr died in 1737, Carl Friedrich was sent to live with the Bach family, who had by then moved to Leipzig. There, he had direct access to the grand master of invention and composition, and from him he learned the skills he would use to dazzle audiences in a career of improvised performances on the viola da gamba and harpsichord.
From 1763 Abel shared a house in London with Johann Christian Bach (whom he had known in Leipzig as a young man) and together they ran the Wednesday Evening Concerts at Carlisle House in Soho Square, the forerunner to the more celebrated Bach-Abel Concerts in Hanover Square. Abel’s Six Sonatas (WK 141-146) and the four solos recorded here date from the 1770s, when this pioneering concert subscription series was at its peak.
Relatively straightforward pieces, the Sonatas were written to attract enthusiastic amateurs of relatively modest ability on the instrument. While his aim may have been to entertain, Abel invested all his considerable melodic talents into these compositions. Taking inspiration from reports of Abel improvising and decorating in performance, the artists have elected to repeat the slow movements in ornamented versions. The continuo element of the sonatas is also open to interpretation; the artists’ choice of theorbo was prompted by the historical idea that the instrument was still in fashion in late-18th-century London, even if unusual, and that aesthetically it is particularly suited to the intimate dimension of this music.

Found this CD in my local store and bought It with no listening. I was sure It was good. Recorded sound is astonishing, the two musicians play very well and the overall quality of music is pretty high. The mixture of theorbo and viola da gamba offers a wonderful sound

Wunderschöne und detaillierte Interpretation dieser sechs kompkten und fein komponierten Sonaten in verschiedenen Tempi mit mildem doch gut phrasiertem Ton der genialen Gambe und zurückgehaltenem doch schimmerndem Klang des ebenso genialen Theorbos. Der intime und perfekt entsprechende Dialog zwischen den beiden Virtuosen ist echt eindrucksvoll. Faszinierend vom Anfang bis zum Ende!

These are appealing to a fan of Haydn's Baryton trios like myself. Those are also composed in an accessible style (Abel's were published as 'easy sonatas'). The intonation of the Viola da Gamba is nearly identical to the Baryton, even though the Baryton has a lower range to my knowledge. The Siciliano of sonata 2 is so beautiful. The continuo here gives such an incredible intimate setting. If only my son weren't sleeping, I'd love to light my fireplace and listen to this over a strong stout.

Abel was that era's substitute for Valium.
Sonatas in general are so boring... the same theme repeated over and over and over again, with only one or two simple variations. Definetely going to sleep listening to this.

These sonatas - among the last ones written for Viola da Gamba and bass, are often more or less despised. Obviously, they are influenced by claccicism and are far t from the delicious sensitivity of the Franc baroque literature or the outstandinc contrapintal style od JSB's three sonatas for Viola da Gamba and harpsichotd. Nevertheless, their writing is firm and quite in line with the tone of the instrument. If tou have time to listen up to the end, you will be surprised when hearing that the very last movement is a transcrption of great aria of Sarastro in Mozart's Zauberflüte (which is actually an exposition of key Masonic principles).🔆🔆🔆
