When Clue was first released in theaters it had 3 different versions. Each version had a different ending. Depending on what theater you went to determined what version we watched. The movies were labeled A,B,C. My brother and I saw version C in the theaters when Clue first premiered back in the day. Someone told us to go see that one because it was the best one out if the three. He was right in my opinion. LOL!

I couldn’t quite tell if you have ever played the board game or not. The weapons Mr. Boddy brought to the guests (hoping they would kill Wadsworth) are the same weapons found in the board game. The aliases (Mustard, White, Plum, Peacock, Scarlet and Green) correspond to the yellow, white, purple, blue, red and green playing tokens. The “shortcuts” or “hidden passages” are also from the game. Playing the game, or at least reading the playing instructions, would help to understand some parts of the movie.
And remember the movie is set during the McCarthy era, when many people’s reputations were destroyed due to real or presumed ties to the communist movement.

"Mr Body" was played by the singer for legendary Punk band FEAR. They were my childhood idol John Belushi's favorite band & were friends when he died in '82. I snuck backstage at one of their shows once & even though I loved the band,, I told Lee Ving/"Mr Body" how much of a Belushi fan I was & he was cool enough to tell me stories over beers. The Clue board game was huge in the '70's. When this film came out they had at least 3 different versions if I remember correct? Same film I think, just with the different endings.
    See ya!

It’s hilarious that you almost had it right so early, but from the wrong direction. I love the subversion of the old “the butler did it” trope. He did it, but he wasn’t the butler. Quite a brilliant twist to reveal Mr. Boddy as the villain (twice) rather than the victim (also twice). I enjoyed how much you were entertained and flummoxed by it at the same time. 😄

This movie is based on a Bosrd game called Clue. In the game you choose what Character you want to be (such as Mrs Peacock) and the object you want to use to commit murder (such as the Rope). When this movie came out in the 80’s the game was very popular. It made the movie much easier to follow.

I wish someone had told you that this movie is a dark comedy, and that solving the mystery takes a back seat to the silliness. After all; why did they have to use the weapons locked in the cabinet when the poker for the fire or knives in the kitchen were available? 🙃 Leslie Ann Warren, who plays Miss Scarlet was Norma, the ditzy girlfriend in Victor/ Victoria. And Madeline Kahn, who plays Mrs White was Eunice in What's Up Doc?

So the flick is based upon the board game. The board game is (unofficially) based upon Agatha Christie's play The Mouse Trap, which is the longest running theatrical play in all history...not exaggerating!
The plot's different, but it's arguably the OG whodunit. If y'all ever get a chance to see the play ( _never_ adapted into a movie, btw) do see it and try to puzzle it out during the intermission; the clues are there to solve the mystery in Acts 1&2.

    • @HuntingViolets

The movie can never be made while the play is running, and, barring a brief hiatus during COVID, it has never stopped running. I saw a version of it done at a local high school several years back and enjoyed it. You can also read it in a book that collects some of Christie's plays.

It's really such a fun board game, and this movie was an outrageously fantastic adaptation (which, all things considered on the success rate of such things, is really impressive). The script was meticulous, and there was only one line that was improvised, and it is infamous and beloved. It was just so funny, and caught everyone off guard, that they just had to keep it in.

And while yes, as everyone has pointed out, depending on which theater you went to, you got one of three different endings. However, there are actually four endings. I believe the fourth ending was filmed at least partially because there were photo stills of it. But either it was never finished, or unused... something about it being too dark in tone. But it is in the novelization of the movie. In that ending, at first the killer tries to frame Peacock & Plum, but Plum realizes the actual killer is Wadsworth. And Wadsworth has poisoned the champaign giving them 3 hours to live. Cops show up, he escapes in a car only to find that vicious dog in the back.

One of the great screwball comedies of all time, a genre that has since gone out of style unfortunately. Screwball comedies were called that because they made fun of everything, and the jokes hit so often and so quickly that you usually missed one for every two that you catch.

A perfect reaction to one of the most perfect murder mysteries! No doubt you’d been told about the rules of the original board game and that the film contained 3 different endings and you didn’t know which one you saw in theaters. This film is so popular that not only it spawned stage adaptions, but that other films such as Knives Out was inspired by this. I must recommend Adam Sandler and Jennifer Coolidge’s Murder Mystery double feature films and the Scooby Dooby Doo films or series.

This movie was my favorite when I was a kid, and I absolutely ADORE Tim Curry. I was watching this with some friends who were in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and one of them said "Hey, that Dr. Frank N Furter!" Blank look from me. They continued "He's in Rocky Horror!" I went the next Friday, and it changed my life. I can't BELIEVE they're looking to remake this movie. It DOES NOT NEED REBOOTING! I will clench my teeth and not go into I feel about The Crow reboot, other than to say it looks terrible, I feel sick about it, it is stomping all over Brandon Lee's legacy, and they COULD AND SHOULD have used a different character name than Eric Draven.
