I cannot stand acid reflux/heartburn-these two things, in my opinion, are the worst pains that one can witness. I do NOT like taking medicine as the side effects can sometimes outweigh what it is you’re treating, but I almost simply cannot go without this particular medication. It has been a lifesaver-all that said, I’m going to work on weening myself off....again...I’ve tried that before and it just keeps coming back regardless of any changes. I wish there was some procedure that would treat this permanently.
I have taken it for over 20 yrs I don't have most of those symptoms like headache , nausea etc when I try other meds like famotidine does heart burn comes back in less then 24 hrs .
I went back on omeprazole (40 mg) a year after fundoplication surgery to correct a large hiatal hernia. A year after surgery, I started to choke on my food and to lose weight. All tests on upper and lower GI were negative. I gained the weight back but a recent bone density scan shows osteoporosis. I have also noticed a lot of muscle cramping as of late. My next move, approved by the doc, is to lower the omeprazole to 20 mg and to add daily supplements of calcium, magnesium and Vitamin D. I think the doc wants to repeat the bone scans in a year.
Caused Osteoperosis like symptoms for me. I lift daily very heavy especially for the last month or so. I started take omeprazole and all the sudden 4 days later my middle finger feels slightly fractured(possibly hairline fracture), my wrist, knees, shoulders, elbows all hurt during my lifts. This is the first time I've ever had to back up off of weights like this. This isnt an off day or overtraining. My girlfriend whos in med school told me omeprazole/ proton pump inhibitors limit uptake of calcium and vitamic c however, since Im lifitng heavy its possible I need excess levels of these vitamins and minerals, but do the the reduction my joints are suffering.

I’ve been taking this for twenty years and now I’ve been told to take double the amount as I have developed ulcers in my stomach and duodenum - but I was wanting to be able to come off them! I have lost loads of weight over the last year (over 70lbs, surprisingly easily after years of being a bit overweight, I’m now worried that I’m getting too thin) and would like to come off all my medications.
All this medication have a horrible side effect, why? Why they don't create a "safer medication"? Why the market / pharmacy they filled with a horrible drugs and all of them have a major side effect? I am on Omeprazole for 8 days now and I got headache everyday, stomach-pain, hand and feet spasms, nausea, muscle weakness? I am not sure if I should continue taking it? I feel awful with that medication. I am a very health eater my whole life and now I am not even sure what to eat anymore?
These are exactly my symptoms from the last 3 weeks. I took omeprazole 40mg for 4 days and I have been horrible ever since. I was so stupid to jump on it instead of taking tums or pepcid for my acid. I have double/ blurry vision, the nerves in my head tingle sometimes, my right eye was twitching for two days and I had palpitations and ear pressure. I still have it and I am recovering real slow. I am taking b12 and magnesium supplements. Made a big mistake taking omeprazole. idk how long this will last.

Should someone on PPIs for 20 years like myself be concerned about the latest news concerning PPIs and stomach or other digestive cancers? I've read plenty of studies validating the safety of PPIs when used long term and the inherent weaknesses in the studies that show an association between PPIs and cancer. This is a hot topic and can be alarming for many of us.
The short answer is we can't say for sure. Association studies are always weak but they do show that there could be some risk. There just isn't enough data to say for sure. The way I recommend approaching that is that if you truly need to be on it, meaning that you are completely miserable and the acid is causing damage to your esophagus as confirmed by appropriate workup then the risk of not taking it is likely greater than the small risk that taking it may put you. However if there are things that you can do to get off of it like changing your lifestyle then its worth trying to get off of them. Some people get stuck on them, as I talked about in the video, because they stop them too quickly and get the rebound reflux and mistake that for meaning that they still need to be on them. It's a complex question that we don't have a great answer to. Definitely a good discussion to have with your doctor. Thanks for watching!
Thanks Doctor! As you say, it sounds like the risks at this point are theoretical and low if they do exist. Ive been on it for 20 years and have had absolutely no side effects to this point. However, I owe it to myself, my wife and two beautiful kids to come off of this medication if it is in my power to do so. Thanks again for your input and your great videos!
I just don’t understand why doctors think its okay to stay on this for years. I also don’t understand why decreasing our stomach acid is a smart thing to do. We aren’t digesting food if we kill stomach acid. I think that is why I am always constipated.

I’ve been worried about long term effects like mentioned in video so I decided to cut out all acidic foods and drinks from my diet, sucks btw, And stopped taking Omeprazole and switched to Pepcid and papaya chewable’s.
