    you are a bright and articulate womoen. with that is mind I want to suggest a 3rd option related to the mind. we are currently stuck in an either or situation which is useless in resolving the situation in a meaningful way for all parties. the key point is preservation of the land and not allowing for the blight we currently see. My proposal.is mine a section at a time and then bring in a crew to reclaim the alnd and replant the area. in the mean time the next section can be mind and land recovered then recovery follows as a n ongoing continuum. Think about it. The money coming in from the mine can be used in ways to mak woderful Panama and even better place. Everyone wins.

    Maybe most of you don’t need to travel to Colon, just be careful. Road blocks from very early in the morning like 5am to 6pm , Monday to Friday. Sometimes people block access to the Manzanillo port as well on Saturday.

    They will figure out a way to allow the mine to continue, 375 million per year minimum plus 8000 full time jobs and 30,000 supporting jobs is to big to close down for this little country. If they close it, Panama is in for some serious punishment from the international courts and global investors. Judgements could bankrupt the country.

    Who would pay the costs of closing the mine? I imagine that those would be considerable and run into hundreds of millions of dollars. If First Quantum is expected to pay those costs, they would be added to the astronomical claim that would be made to international arbitration. And there is no question that First Quantum would make that claim, unless Panama pre-emptively offers compensation, because it would be obligated to do so to maximize shareholder value. A management team and board that did not seek compensation for a multi-billion dollar loss would be exposed to lawsuits from shareholders.

      As for the former contract, Panama has to pay 7 billion dollars to First Quantum. Let’s see how Panama explodes if Panama must pay that amount.

      Just a reminder for all foreigners in Panama. The law in Panama forbids foreigners to get political involved! So bite your tongue before you get into a conversation with locals. If someone is reporting you, you could get deported and the visa revoked. Especially now where foreigners get blamed for everything. And one thing more what is absolutely different handling locals and foreigners. If locals do something wrong, you always see that the videos don’t show the identity of the Panamanian people. Foreigners do NOT HAVE THE right of identity protection in Panama. I asked a police officer why they show foreigners (offender or victim) without blurring the videos like with Panamanians. Coming from Germany, there would be an outcry if Germany would handle foreigners differently. Especially with our historical background. But hey. I keep my mouth shut and just shake my head. 😊

    That mine has been there for 20 years. I can understand not liking the deal, or the foreign ownership, but it seems self harming to shut it down unless it’s doing something crazy like harming the ground water.
    I think it’s 1% of the total copper in the world. Not close to the 100 year old mine in Chili, but not insignificant for people who like electricity.

      Ellos junto con los noticieros ocultaron imagenes del desastre por 20 años hasta que llegaron las redes sociales y alguien en helicóptero se atrevio a sacar las imagenes del desastre. Ellos estan contaminando todo porque el aumento de las personas con cáncer e insuficiente renal aumento en la comunidades alrededor de la mina, tiene tuneles ocultos desviando el rio donde los trabajadores panameños no pueden ir, pero alguien pudo y tomo el video.

      Tambien sacaron de vista de google map el puerto maritimo que construyeron, hay videos de demasiados asiaticos que han traido ilegalmente es una total mafia porque siguieron trabajando sin contrato por muchos años, nisiquiera las autoridades ambientales pueden ir a inspeccionar todo solo los dejan pasar hasta cierto lugar. El mapa para minar todo Panama es una locura para cada estado mas de 100 minas y hasta fondo marino e islas. Quieren matarnos

    Although I support people using their democratic voice to protest, once you start blocking roads and threatening economic stability, that's where my support ends. Anyone blocking roads should be arrested and any vehicles blocking roads must be seized, confiscated and forfeited by the police. As a Canadian, I was all in favour of the Truckers Freedom Convoy protesting in Ottawa, but once these truckers started stopping the free flow of traffic over international bridges with the USA, that's where my support ceased. Those truckers were arrested and their vehicles were forfeited. YOU CANNOT IMPEDE OTHER PEOPLE IN THEIR DAILY LIVES. PERIOD. When the govt didn't respond to the first road block (with arrests and seizures), it simply invited others to do the same, knowing nothing would be done to them. If you don't nip it in the bud immediately, you are simply inviting anarchy to rain down on you. Which is what you have now in Panama.

    • @chuletaization
      @chuletaization 9 месяцев назад +1

      You don't support protests that impede business as usual. Protests that inconvenience no one achieve nothing. That is the lesson of history validated by every protest from Martin Luther to Martin Luther King. The squeaking wheel gets the grease. If not for the massive protests that shut down hwys, universities, local govts during the Vietnam War that travesty might have gone on indefinitely.
      The vast majority of Panamanians continue to support the protests even if their daily lives are impeded by it and most likely more than yours. Justice sometimes requires a measure of personal sacrifice from citizens and foreigners lucky enough to live in this beautiful, friendly, inexpensive and mostly peaceful country, except in your case of course.

    It’s constitutional
    Canada is a responsible miner and everyone uses copper everyday in their lives but don’t want it mined from their country??? Wake up it doesn’t work that way so be happy it’s from a responsible Canadian miner with a impeccable record regarding all environmental concerns

    • @chuletaization
      @chuletaization 9 месяцев назад

      Yes, be happy Panama received $millions over a period of 20 years from a responsible Canadian mining company with an impeccable record as it extracted $billons in profits for its Chinese and other foreign shareholders. That's just the way resource theft works in the global south. What's not to like?
