In this video I show you what it looks like to shine a super bright burning blue laser directly into the camera while it is recording! I talk about why colored lights look white when over-exposed on camera.

@@MistrzBartek125
I think you are correct. Hard to tell on that little point-and-shoot, but the sensor should be located further back than anything he burned with the torch... and the last thing he recorded looked just like when you turn on live-view on a DSLR without a lens attached so I bet it was safe.
Maybe if he had shined the laser more steady and/or for longer it would have completely ruined some of the pixels on the sensor... the black background started to burn quickly because it absorbs a lot of the light it receives, but the camera's sensor is a lot more reflective.

This explanation about the yellow sodium lamp is also why that hot metal at temperatures of like 1500 K or so - e.g. iron at forging temperature (melts @ 1811 K) - appears "yellow hot" at its surface even though Planck's law would call its spectrum very red, though not absolutely so as it is essentially an extended "tail" into the red - at least on cameras. For your eyes, it's something similar as well, but for a slightly different reason: instead of imperfect filtering glass, it's rather because the photopigment molecules in the cone cells, which are the ones responsible for providing color vision, have overlapping response ranges, and thus the "red" Planckian light at suitable intensity - i.e. as when coming directly off the surface - ends up stimulating the green and blue cones as well as the red ones, especially given its nature as a "tail" as just mentioned even despite the fact that tail is much stronger at the reddest end, and this makes the object's surface appear yellow instead of red. But with suitable filtration or with a camera with short exposure, the 1500 K metal will appear red, just as expected from Planck's law. Moreover, the effect is most pronounced with the metal viewed in darkness, when there is high contrast and your eyes' pupils are dilated. (FWIW, the Sun, at 5800 K surface temp, is actually a white source - in fact essentially ideally white, because its spectrum is the base spectrum to which eyes evolved to be optimally attuned and thus defines "perfect", or white, light. Yet oddly enough, astronomers call it a "yellow" star, which really should be reserved for stars at a lower temperature.)
Ya...uh....totally
@Anime Kid Heyyyy that's a little mean you know? Why do you want to be a little bit mean or curt to me? What aim do you seek the accomplishment of by doing so? It doesn't seem like it would be good, but then again, I do not know you.
Can I hug You instead? Maybe You'd feel better. I want to give Love to little Peepzles, because there is too little of it in the world we have now. Too many Humans like to hate their fellow Human, not Love him/her/hir/xyr/whatever. Worse a few are moved even to kill and maim! The terror. :( I want to give forth the opposite. Meehhmmhhrr - that is supposed to mean Good things, to convey a sense of Goodness and Love to little Youzzles. And thus why I wonder why this little Youzzle seems a little bit snappey/poppey/bitey, a little tart, sharp, not particularly refined or kindly.
I hold nothing against You, but I want to understand why you are a bit like that toward that which was not meant as aggression or hostility, just to share some insights that I had regarding the marvellous phenomena of the Universe that are at work here. They are beautiful, magnificent. If it is not your taste, that is okay, I do not demand or expect anything from anyone that they be interested in the same thing as I. I am merely concerned about the little, slightly tart response you give, that makes it sound just a weest bit angry to something that was never intended to be taken as such. If that is merely my perception, my bad. I have been wrong and in Error before and I have no problem admitting when I am in Error. It is better that I know for sure if I am doing something Wrong than I do not so that I may mend that errant conduct.
@Anime Kid aww :) I'm sorry. I do find certain things funny, but not things that seem a bit rude, curt, or tart, and moreover it is ideal if it is marked as such, and moreover the things I really find the funniest are perhaps slightly different from what is usually called as such.
❤ meep.
never mind though. It is what it is, this is how things are here.
Yes, you see that if you have a very thin wire heated to about 1500 K (for example the filament in an incandescent light bulb, when you run it at low voltage so it doesn't light up fully) it looks quite a bit orange (since the area giving off light is so small that the total brightness isn't very much) - but if you have for example a piece of metal with significant size, a brick or for example look at the inside wall of a furnace heated to that same temperature, it looks almost white and that's just because it's so bright.
When it comes to cameras and hot objects, it's more complicated as camera sensors is almost always more sensitive to infra red (IR) light than the eye. Even though there is a lot of visible light emitted from objects at 1500+ K
- most of the light is still in the IR range (unless it's extremely hot - like 4000-5000 K, wich would turn almost any metal into vapor). The color filters for the pixels also often don't let just one wavelength range thru, but even multiples of that range. A blue pixel for example, may be most transparent to a wave length of 450 nm - but may also let thru 900 nm and 1350 nm quite well (even if it blocks green and red visible light quite efficiently). That's why it so hard to make glow look natural on videos.
It's quite common that the IR activates the blue pixels too much and causes red hot objects to look purple instead of red or orange. Many cameras have IR filters to block out most of the IR - but still it isn't sufficient in most cases to make fire and hot objects look perfectly natural (as we see it with our eyes) on the video/photo.
EDIT: The sun is called a yellow star because it has it's emission peak, in a wavelength range that our eyes see as yellow. The actual range of all stars extends from deep IR far into the UV range. Hotter stars just have less IR and red light and more blue and UV and the opposit. It's much easier to describe the stars by their peak wavelength. You can't describe a specific wavelength by saying it's white - white is a combination of many wavelengths.
@Anime Kid Dude lemme be them for a sec.

This channel brings out your inner geek. You sir are a legend
I have the same laser :), also for a better result I think you should have focused the beam until it converges at a point and aim that at the lense instead, with my laser I can light white paper on fire by focusing the beam, it provides the best burning capabilities, also if you do want this laser it runs about 70 dollars on ebay, make sure you buy the proper laser goggles that block out the specified laser wave length if you do. Different shades/colors of lasers require different protective eyewear to block out that specific wavelength, follow all instructions and warnings 😊, have fun if you do buy one, I suggest getting an optic prism and shining the light through it, its absolutely gorgeous to look at.

The image sensor will perceive any color as white when you over drive it. Also, cameras have linear detectors so, have very limited dynamic range when set for a given exposure level. We can see distinguish many times more light levels (above and below the level we are focused on) because our eyes have logarithmic detection.
For just a moment there toward the end I half-expected Dan and Gav to be narrating. "The laser didn't damage the camera the way we wanted, so let's just burn it with fire to see what happens."
