    I can actually explain the Einstein one:
    The Swiss school system has grades 6 - 1, where 6 is the best grade and 1 means you've failed.
    Obviously Einstein, who went to school in Switzerland, had a 6 in Maths.
    In Germany, where I believe the rumor started, has the reversed grades, tho. In Germany a 1 is the best grade, and if you've failed the class you get a 6.
    So that's where the confusion came from. Germans heared Einstein had a 6 in Maths and assumed that meaned he failed

    • @archwaldo
      @archwaldo 5 лет назад +358

      Makes a lot of sense if that's the case.
      Math is vital in physics, so there's no way Einstein would have come up with all his theories if he's bad at it.
      XD

      It doesn't help that Einstein went to school in Munich, Germany until he was about ~15 years old. So he has a German grading system in those years, and then went to study in Switzerland, where as you've mentioned the grading system is opposite. If you put his grades from Elementary school until he Graduates all next to each other, to see the progression of his education, without context of the grading system being different suddenly then TADA, this common 'fact' gets even more widespread.

    The stone thing is called pressing I believe. As for why the guy never confessed to end his suffering, the property of confessed witches could be seized. By refusing to confess, he made sure that his family inherited his property rather than having it seized by the very people who killed him.

    • @jayd8091
      @jayd8091 5 лет назад +11

      Wasn't that stoning? I thought stoning was the process of laying heavy stones on the victim gradually until they're crushed to death, rather than throwing stones.

    • @stanklepoot
      @stanklepoot 5 лет назад +90

      @@jayd8091 Well, stoning didn't have to be just throwing rocks at someone. I believe it also included beating them with rocks. Pressing was piling the rocks on top of them a bit at a time. It was meant to force a confession out of a person, as they would typically stop every so often to give them a chance to confess as the pain and fear of impending death intensified.

    A bit late, but as an Italian I can expand a bit on the whole "trains running on time under Mussolini" thing:
    it was not a metaphore, actually! Punctuality was hugely pushed in fascist propaganda as it helped paint the image of an efficient, working regime. I understand that, in retrospect, it really is kinda of a silly thing, but Mussolini was obsessed with appearance. Even fascist architecture takes on the idea of rigid, almost "crude" efficiency with its straight lines and no room for ornaments.
    Thing is, trains didn't actually rain on time! Accidents and delays were as frequent as ever, only main lines where actually functional, it's just that no one gave a crap if a random train coming from a random small town with random workers in it got delayed into oblivion.

      He failed the entrance exam to the University at age 15 or 16. The earliest you can normaly go to university in Switzerland is age 17/18.(you can still take this exam today and speaking from experience it's still really hard) In Switzerland you can go to University with just your Matura diploma but he didn't have it at the time. he took the test because he didn't finish regular school by this time. He got really good grades an math/physics but failed in the others(like history). When he got the Matura Diploma he had exceptional grades exept in French. Since the German grading system it the other way as the Swiss one there was confusion.

    At 3:10 you begin to talk about the different Buddha depictions; the different sizes of the Buddhas’ stomach would depend on which particular Buddha they are referencing - as Buddha is not just one person but whomever has achieved enlightenment. However, the correct depiction of the first Buddha should be a slimmer version, as he was a Hindu prince and ate very healthily and then went on to sit under a tree to avoid temptation and avoided eating.

    Giles Corey is an idol of mine. He wasn't just so done with Salem he didn't want to grace the judges with his plea. He wanted to die silent.
    Another man who was killed during the trials was one John Proctor. He was put on trial for Witchcraft and Adultery because Abigail Williams (the main character of the whole shebang) was trying to have his wife killed so she could marry him. John was about to confess and save his life before throwing it away because he "Would rather die with (his) name" than give it to the judges. He died because he would rather be hanged in front of all who loved him than sell his friends for himself.

    The wooden teeth part is partially true. Due to Washington's size, the common dental prosthetics of the time were a tad small, so he swapped between different dentures constantly; it's one of the reasons he rarely smiled in portraits - they were rather painful and he could just stand a neutral grimace. He did, however, consistently use a set of wooden dentures between new fittings, often to no avail.

    The misconception about Einstein comes from the grading System. He was born and went to school in Germany for the most time, but he got his Last school diploma in switzerland. In switzerland the best grade was 6, the worst 1. In Germany the best grade is 1 and the worst is 6. People later confused the swiss and german System, making it seem like Einstein was a terrible student

    Egyptian calendars were separated into 4 parts: 1st flood, 2nd flood, 3rd flood, and a five day intermediate period after the 3 flood periods. Each flood period was an 120 days or 4 months of 30 days each. This gave their calendar 365 days to a year. They had no leap year day but were closer than most civilizations before and after their time. Lol, I love puns.

    about the iron maiden thing: another problem is that a lot of old objects that we simply dont know right away what they were used for tend to get either called a torture device (if its in a culture we know a bit about) or some religious thing (in cultures we know little about).

    • @jurgnobs1308
      @jurgnobs1308 5 лет назад

      about the Einstein thing: the reason for that misconception is most likely not just jealous people making it up. but Einstein was born in germany but moved to switzerland early on where he went to highschool and university (he also never had a german passport as he refused it when they first got issued but he did have a swiss one).
      so why does that lead to this misconception? because swiss grades are different than german ones. in germany, 6 is the worst grade and 1 is the best grade. in switzerland, it is the exact opposite. so while his grades were very good (except in french if I remember right), they look terrible in the eyes of an uninformed german. so that is almost certainly where these misconceptions are from.

    Einstein did get kicked out of at least one school (I wanna say multiple schools though) when he was growing up because he was hyperactive, disruptive, didn’t listen, etc. (Might’ve had ADHD) So I feel like that might have had something to do with the misconception that he failed math.

    About the Salem witch trials:
    If you pleaded guilty, they would set you free and the State would confiscate all your lands and belongings.
    If you pleaded not guilty, the court would find you guilty, kill you and the State would take all your lands and belongings.
    The guy that was pressed was an old man who lived a good life. He knew that no matter how he pleaded, the State would confiscate everything he had and leave his children destitute.
    But he found a loophole in the system. If you do not plea, the State cannot take your belongings. This is why the court tortured him for 3 days. They were trying to get a plea out of him. The court failed and he was the only accused whose descendants were able to inherit.

He tackles such topics as clearing up ww2 misconceptions, proving that a lot of ww2 "what if?" scenarios are flawed and would not change enough, He also has a series called the meme tanks where he talks about ww1,between wars,ww2 tanks characterized by some uncommon and/or funny feature. I'd love if you made reaction vid about his meme tanks series. There is also channel called alternate history hub with a lot of very interesting what if? scenarios from which I learnt quite a lot about interesting events and event chains
